Python is a high-level, general-purpose programming language used for work ranging from web development and automation to scientific computing and education. It is designed for readable code, supports several programming styles, and comes with a broad standard library. Those qualities make it a popular starting point, but they do not make Python the best fit for every project or guarantee that every Python program will be fast or simple.
What is Python?
Python is a programming language: people write instructions in Python code, and an interpreter implementation reads that code and carries out its instructions. Python.org describes it as interpreted, object-oriented, high-level, and dynamically typed. It also supports procedural and functional programming, so developers can choose different ways to organize a program.
In practical terms, Python is designed to let people express tasks in relatively readable code while drawing on built-in data structures, reusable modules, and libraries. It can be used for short scripts as well as larger applications. The language itself is distinct from the interpreter and from any particular framework or third-party package built for it.
What is Python used for?
Python is used in several established areas. The language and its ecosystem can support these tasks, though specific projects often rely on additional frameworks or packages rather than the core language alone.
#1 Best Overall
| Area | Examples |
|---|---|
| Web and internet development | Building web applications and working with internet protocols. |
| Scientific and numeric work | Writing programs for scientific and numerical tasks, often with domain-specific packages. |
| Automation and software development | Scripting, connecting components, testing, logging, profiling, and other development tasks. |
| Data and databases | Working with databases, text, files, and structured data. |
| Desktop and network software | Creating desktop graphical interfaces and network programs. |
| Education and games | Teaching programming concepts and developing games. |
The Python standard library includes tools for areas such as text processing, filesystems, operating-system interfaces, sockets, and internet protocols. Third-party packages extend those capabilities; Python.org points users to the Python Package Index (PyPI) for community-contributed modules.
Which features shape Python’s reputation?
Readable syntax
Python emphasizes syntax intended to be clear and maintainable. Indentation groups statements, making code structure visually apparent. Readability is a design goal, not a promise that every program will be easy to understand: clarity still depends on how the code is written.
Rank #2
Dynamic typing
Python is dynamically typed. In ordinary code, programmers generally do not need to declare a variable’s type in the same way required by some languages; types are associated with values as the program runs. This can make experimentation more direct, while also making it important to understand what kinds of values a program expects.
More than one programming style
Python supports object-oriented programming, which organizes code around objects and classes; procedural programming, which structures work as sequences of operations; and functional programming, which emphasizes functions and transforming values. A project can use one style or combine them.
Reusable modules, packages, and libraries
Modules and packages let developers organize code into components that can be reused. Python’s standard library covers many common programming needs, and third-party packages add specialized tools. This ecosystem can save effort, but a package’s suitability, maintenance, and compatibility need to be evaluated for the specific project.
Exceptions and debugging support
Python represents many errors as exceptions. Tracebacks show where an error occurred and help developers follow the path that led to it; debugging tools can support further investigation. A clear error-reporting mechanism helps diagnosis, but it does not prevent bugs.
Portability and extensibility
Python is available across major platforms, including Linux, macOS, Windows, and many Unix variants. It can also interact with system facilities and libraries, and can be extended with C or C++. Portability does not mean that every program or dependency will work unchanged on every system; platform-specific requirements can still matter.

- Readable code: The language’s syntax is intended to support clarity and maintainability.
- Broad usefulness: Python can serve as a scripting language, a way to connect software components, or a foundation for larger applications.
- Code reuse: Modules, packages, the standard library, and community packages provide ways to build on existing work.
- A rapid development cycle: The project highlights an edit-test-debug workflow and tools for examining errors.
- No purchase required: Python and its standard library are freely usable and distributable, including for commercial use.
These are general characteristics, not a universal ranking against other languages. The sources do not establish that Python is always faster, easier, more secure, or cheaper to maintain than an alternative. Performance and development effort depend on the particular workload, implementation, libraries, deployment environment, and team.

Who created Python, and why is it called Python?
Python’s design drew on earlier language work. In the official General Python FAQ, Guido van Rossum describes experience implementing an interpreted language with the ABC group at CWI and says that work influenced Python’s design. He specifically connects it to indentation for grouping statements and to high-level data types, while noting that Python’s details differ.
“I had extensive experience with implementing an interpreted language in the ABC group at CWI, and from working with this group I had learned a lot about language design. This is the origin of many Python features, including the use of indentation for statement grouping and the inclusion of very-high-level data types (although the details are all different in Python).”
Van Rossum says he chose the name while reading published scripts from the BBC comedy series Monty Python’s Flying Circus. He wanted a short, unique, slightly mysterious name. The cited account does not establish a precise creation or first-release year, so this article does not assign one.
Quick Recap
How can a beginner start learning Python?
- Install Python 3. Use the official Python downloads page to find installation options for your operating system.
- Open the official tutorial. The Python Tutorial introduces the language’s basic concepts and features. It is useful for learning, though it assumes some familiarity with programming concepts.
- Write and run small programs. Start with simple tasks such as displaying text, working with a list, or reading a file. Change one thing at a time and use any traceback to locate errors.
- Explore more learning resources when needed. Python.org’s Beginner’s Guide collects options for newcomers, including tutorials and books. A book can offer a structured path, but buying one is not required to begin.
