Not in this particular test. In a reported 26-qubit quantum-circuit benchmark on an NVIDIA H200, TensorCircuit-NG using Python with its JAX backend completed a warmed-up energy-and-gradient evaluation faster than the tested Yao.jl implementation. That result compares two specific software stacks on one workload; it does not show that Python is generally faster than Julia.

What the H200 benchmark measured

Shixin Zhang’s October 2026 benchmark article describes a variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) for the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model. The test used 26 qubits, 16 circuit layers, 816 parameters, and double precision. Both implementations reportedly started from the same uniform superposition state; each layer applied RZZ gates between neighboring qubits, followed by RX gates on all qubits.

The reported energy-and-gradient timings were:

Implementation Initial evaluation-related time Warmed-up energy plus gradient
TensorCircuit-NG/JAX, scan 11.7 seconds 0.864 seconds
TensorCircuit-NG/JAX, unrolled 206.9 seconds 0.396 seconds
Yao.jl/CUDA state vector 29.0 seconds 3.938 seconds

These are timings reported by Zhang, not independently reproduced measurements. The article says its scripts, commands, and dependency versions are linked, but they were not independently audited here. Zhang reports that the resulting parameters agreed element by element and that the maximum difference between complete gradients was at machine precision. Read the benchmark article.

Why the timing depends on the task

Energy plus gradient is not the same as energy alone

The main table measures a warmed-up evaluation that computes both energy and its gradient. For an energy-only forward pass, Zhang reports median times of 0.095 seconds for TensorCircuit-NG and 0.192 seconds for Yao.jl, after warm-up and ten repeated calculations; the energy results were identical. These forward-only figures are a separate measurement and should not be substituted for the energy-and-gradient timings.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Compilation changes the trade-off

The unrolled JAX version had the shortest reported warmed-up energy-and-gradient time, 0.396 seconds, but the longest initial evaluation-related time, 206.9 seconds. Zhang estimates that its longer initial cost is offset after roughly 400 evaluations. That break-even estimate follows the reported timing setup; it is not a universal threshold for JAX or for other circuits.

Backend and algorithm matter

This is not a direct test of Python interpreter speed against Julia compiler speed. TensorCircuit-NG exposes a Python interface while using JAX transformations, XLA compilation, and an optimized tensor-contraction order. The tested Yao.jl gradient route used a native GPU state-vector representation with reverse-mode automatic differentiation. The measured performance therefore reflects the full implementation, including its data representation, backend, compilation, and algorithm.

What the comparison does—and does not—establish

For Zhang’s specified circuit and H200 setup, TensorCircuit-NG/JAX was faster than the tested Yao.jl state-vector implementation in both the reported energy-only and warmed-up energy-plus-gradient measurements. The result does not establish a general ranking of Python and Julia: another workload, algorithm, backend, or implementation could change the outcome.

The benchmark article also describes a tested YaoToEinsum/OMEinsum/cuTENSOR tensor-network route that could perform GPU contraction, but whose reverse-mode differentiation failed through in-place mutation in the conversion path. That is a limitation of the particular tested route and interface, not evidence that Julia cannot perform the task. A separate study of Julia for high-energy-physics analyses found Julia implementations competitive for computationally dominated tasks, further illustrating that results depend on the workload. How to judge a Python-versus-Julia benchmark

When applying this result to your own work, check whether the comparison matches your task and runtime conditions:

  • Workload: Compare the same circuit, input, parameter count, and precision—not merely programs described as quantum simulations.
  • Completed work: Distinguish an energy-only forward pass from energy plus gradient, and check whether the result includes the same calculations in both implementations.
  • Hardware and precision: A GPU and double-precision test says little about CPU performance, other accelerators, or single precision.
  • Execution phase: Separate compilation or first-call cost from steady-state runtime, especially if your job runs only a few evaluations.
  • Correctness: Check that outputs and gradients agree within an appropriate tolerance before treating a speed difference as meaningful.
  • Implementation choices: Record the backend, data representation, differentiation method, and contraction strategy; these can dominate the language interface.

TensorCircuit-NG’s paper describes a framework built on JAX, TensorFlow, and PyTorch, with automatic differentiation and distributed simulation capabilities.
