To manage realtime message-size limits in a Python video consultation room, first identify the transport or SDK packet API and its effective limit. Then keep routine events small, split larger messages only when you can safely reassemble them, use streams for substantial content, and apply backpressure when the send queue grows. A transport’s ability to fragment data does not replace an application-level size policy.
1. Find the limit that actually applies
There is no single universal “WebRTC maximum” or “WebSocket maximum.” The effective boundary may come from a negotiated WebRTC data-channel limit, a provider’s packet API, a WebSocket library’s receive setting, a reverse proxy, or your own application validation. Identify each layer used by the deployed room, and check both sending and receiving constraints.
For WebRTC data channels
Inspect the negotiated SDP max-message-size attribute. Under RFC 8841, a sender must not exceed the peer’s advertised receive maximum. If the attribute is absent, the RFC default is 64K. A value of zero means the endpoint is willing to handle any size, subject to available memory; it is not a promise of unlimited practical capacity.
The browser-facing WebRTC calculation for maxMessageSize considers the remote endpoint’s advertised receive maximum and the local endpoint’s sending capability, as described by the W3C WebRTC specification. In aiortc, consult the SCTP capability’s maxMessageSize and check the version you deploy; do not assume another SDK exposes the same property. The aiortc API documentation also documents channel buffering controls.

For provider packets or WebSockets
A provider SDK may impose its own packet cap, delivery modes, or routing overhead. Use that provider’s documentation and API rather than treating its packet abstraction as identical to a browser data channel. With WebSockets, RFC 6455 permits a logical message to be carried in multiple frames, but frame fragmentation does not set a safe application message limit. The server still needs a bounded receive policy and memory limits; consult RFC 6455 and the chosen library’s settings.
2. Keep routine realtime messages compact
Room events compete for responsiveness. Remove redundant JSON fields, avoid embedding full transcripts or binary blobs in routine updates, and measure the encoded payload in bytes rather than counting characters. Encoding, metadata, and provider routing headers can make the transmitted payload larger than the visible text suggests.

The IETF’s 16 KB recommendation is specifically about avoiding SCTP association monopolization when message interleaving is unsupported; it is guidance, not a universal hard maximum. RFC 8831 states: “As long as message interleaving is not supported, the sender SHOULD limit the maximum message size to 16 KB to avoid monopolization.” See RFC 8831, section 6.6.

As one provider-specific example, LiveKit documents a 15 KiB user-payload ceiling for reliable packets because routing headers consume part of its 16 KiB protocol limit. Its documentation recommends lossy data packets no larger than 1,300 bytes; larger packets may be fragmented, and losing a constituent packet loses the overall packet. These are LiveKit packet limits and recommendations, not general WebRTC limits. See LiveKit’s packet documentation.

3. Chunk large messages only with a reassembly design
Application-level chunking can carry a large logical message as smaller transport messages, but it shifts reliability and resource management into your application. Each chunk must fit below the actual transport or provider limit after its envelope is included.
A robust chunk envelope should include:
- A unique logical message ID.
- A sequence number and a way to identify the final chunk or total chunk count.
- An integrity check, such as a checksum, for the assembled content.
- A bounded maximum total size and a reassembly timeout.
Define how the receiver handles duplicate, missing, out-of-order, and late chunks. Reject or discard incomplete messages according to the product’s needs, and ensure an attacker or malfunctioning peer cannot make the receiver retain unbounded partial data. Do not rely on WebRTC’s deprecated PPID-based partial-message mechanism as a general solution.

4. Use streams for substantial content
For large text or binary content, prefer a stream API when the selected SDK supports one. Incremental writes and reads avoid constructing one enormous packet in memory and let the receiver process data progressively.
Recommended Free Tools
LiveKit’s Python reference documents ByteStreamWriter.write(bytes), TextStreamWriter.write(str), and asynchronous byte and text readers. Its room configuration also provides a maximum decompressed incoming stream payload; streams exceeding that limit terminate with an error. Check the current LiveKit Python room reference for the API and configuration available to your installed version.

5. Separate bulk transfers and apply backpressure
Move files and large artifacts out of room events
For files, long transcripts, or large images, use an authenticated HTTP or object-storage transfer path and send a small reference or status event in the consultation room. This keeps room messaging focused on coordination and realtime updates instead of turning it into a bulk-transfer channel.
Pause producers when queues fill
When sending chunks, monitor the implementation’s send buffer and slow or pause production as it grows. aiortc documents bufferedAmount and bufferedAmountLowThreshold; use those controls according to the library version deployed. Without backpressure, the sender can accumulate queued data and worsen latency even when individual messages fit the transport limit. Large SCTP user messages may also delay traffic on other channels when interleaving is unavailable.
How to validate your implementation
Test representative encoded payloads on the exact client and server versions you deploy, including the peer combinations expected in production. Verify the negotiated or provider-specific limit, receiving-side caps, behavior at and above the boundary, and what happens when queues rise or a stream ends abnormally. For chunking, exercise duplicate, missing, delayed, and oversized input so that reassembly limits and cleanup work as intended.
When comparing transports or SDKs, assess the effective payload limit, reliable versus lossy delivery and ordering, latency effects, send-buffer controls, stream support, and aggregate-size and timeout controls for reassembly. Keep these distinctions explicit: a protocol limit, an SDK packet cap, a WebSocket library receive limit, a proxy limit, and an application policy are separate controls.
