To monitor photovoltaic (PV) efficiency, compare the system’s measured electrical output with the sunlight and operating conditions available to it. Energy totals alone cannot tell you whether an array is performing well: irradiance, module temperature, shading, downtime, inverter behavior, grid limits and control actions all affect production. Monitoring can flag changes and alarms, but it does not prove which component has failed.

What to measure for a useful performance picture

Pair electrical production data with measurements or estimates of the solar resource and relevant temperatures. NREL’s 2011 presentation on monitoring system performance identifies plane-of-array (POA) irradiance, ambient and module temperature, array voltage, current and power, plus grid and load measurements as useful quantities.

POA irradiance measures sunlight reaching the array plane, making it more directly relevant to the modules than a general weather-station reading. Temperature matters because modules operate under changing conditions; comparing output without accounting for those conditions can make ordinary variation look like a fault. For larger plants, reporting can also include energy delivery, estimated expected power, availability, inverter and balance-of-system efficiency, and alarms, as outlined in NREL’s 2018 PV and energy storage O&M best-practices guide.

Performance ratio is a comparison, not a diagnosis

Performance ratio (PR) normalizes actual production against modeled production for the same measured solar-resource and temperature conditions over a selected period, with system age taken into account. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) describes PR as a useful way to assess performance over time, but a low value does not identify a failed component. It is a signal to investigate alongside availability, alarms and operating context. See DOE’s guidance on operating and maintaining an existing PV system.

How to tell an anomaly from a normal operating limit

A production shortfall is worth checking, especially if it persists or differs from comparable equipment. Before attributing it to a module or inverter, account for conditions that can reduce delivery without indicating an equipment defect. NREL’s O&M guide calls out clipping, interconnection limits and called-for curtailment as items monitoring and reporting should account for.

  • Weather and temperature: Compare output with irradiance and temperature, not only with a prior day or month.
  • Clipping: An inverter may limit output when available DC power exceeds its conversion capacity; a flat-topped output trace can therefore reflect system design or operating conditions.
  • Grid or interconnection limits: A plant may be unable to export all available power.
  • Curtailment or control actions: An operator or grid instruction may intentionally reduce production.
  • Availability and downtime: A stopped or offline inverter can lower delivered energy even when sunlight is available.

For plant-level reporting, consider POA insolation, energy delivered, estimated expected power, availability, inverter efficiency, balance-of-system efficiency and alarms together. NREL emphasizes that good reporting is essential to obtain value from monitoring data; these measures are more useful as a contextual set than as isolated numbers.

How to investigate a monitoring alert

  1. Confirm the data is credible. Check whether the production meter and inverter are reporting, whether timestamps and intervals align, and whether irradiance and temperature readings are plausible. A missing or faulty sensor can create an apparent performance problem.
  2. Check inverter status and messages. DOE recommends checking production meters and inverter error messages as part of system operation and maintenance. Look for recurring alarms, status changes, or unexplained downtime.
  3. Compare like with like. Review output against measured or estimated solar resource and temperature for the same period. Where available, compare inverters or strings operating under similar conditions.
  4. Account for operating constraints. Check for clipping, grid or interconnection limits, curtailment, and control actions before concluding that the array has lost capability.
  5. Escalate unresolved patterns. If a persistent deviation remains after data and operating conditions are checked, arrange suitable electrical or thermal inspection by qualified personnel.

Monitoring performance depends fundamentally on sensor and model quality. NREL’s O&M guide recommends transparent measurement protocols and clear data presentation; a sophisticated dashboard cannot compensate for unreliable inputs or unexplained gaps.

Data quality and sensor maintenance

Irradiance measurement is especially important: NREL’s 2011 presentation identifies POA irradiance as the dominant error source in determining system power. Pyranometers and reference cells are among the instruments used to measure irradiance, and their uncertainty depends on instrument characteristics, calibration and installation. Professional installation, regular calibration and ongoing maintenance of sensors and meters support meaningful performance comparisons.

A handheld irradiance meter can help check a monitoring instrument in the field, but it does not replace calibrated site instrumentation or independently establish system efficiency. Treat a spot reading as a check on measurement plausibility, not as a complete performance assessment.

The 2011 NREL presentation contains sampling and inspection recommendations from its historical monitoring discussion. Those recommendations should not be presented as universal current requirements. The current edition-specific requirements of IEC 61724-1 are not established here; check the applicable standard edition, equipment specifications and jurisdiction for contractual or compliance work.

When to add electrical testing or thermal inspection

Routine monitoring may not reveal every string- or module-level fault. NREL describes periodic manual electrical testing and aerial thermal-imaging inspections as secondary checks, complementary to routine monitoring rather than replacements for it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Electrical checks

Field checks can include open-circuit voltage, operating current and I–V curve tracing. These measurements can help investigate a suspected string or module issue, but results depend on the combined accuracy of irradiance, temperature and electrical sensors. NREL also cautions that field I–V tracer accuracy is limited, so results need appropriate interpretation.

Thermal imaging

Thermal imagery can reveal temperature patterns that merit closer examination and help locate areas for follow-up. It does not, on its own, prove a particular defect. NREL’s guide describes validated image processing as necessary to identify and locate module defects, and treats inspection as a complement to monitoring. Arrange specialist inspection and follow-up appropriate to the finding.

Choosing a monitoring arrangement

When assessing a monitoring system or service, match its capabilities to the questions you need to answer. The following criteria reflect measurement and reporting issues in NREL’s monitoring and O&M guidance.

  • Time resolution: Can the data show short events, or only daily and monthly totals?
  • Measurements included: Are POA irradiance and relevant temperatures available alongside electrical readings?
  • Sensor quality and upkeep: Are accuracy, calibration, installation and maintenance documented?
  • Data access: Can you see alarms and export raw readings to check unusual patterns?
  • Operating context: Do reports account for clipping, curtailment, availability and interconnection limits?
  • Diagnostic granularity: Does the system distinguish inverter-level behavior, and is string-level information available where needed?

A production or availability question may be addressed first with monitoring and inverter data. Uncertainty about a string or module may require electrical testing or thermal imaging by qualified personnel; the appropriate next step depends on what remains unexplained.

How to interpret changes over a system’s life

Do not treat every year-over-year decline as a fault, or compare raw energy totals without considering weather, operating time and measurement quality. NREL’s 2024 utility-scale PV Annual Technology Baseline uses 0.7% per year as a baseline annual degradation-rate assumption. This is a modeling assumption for that analysis, not a universal field threshold or a diagnostic rule for an individual system.
