A router-level VPN connects the router to a VPN provider so supported traffic from connected devices can use the tunnel without a separate VPN app on each device. To set it up, confirm your router supports VPN client mode and your provider’s protocol, import the provider’s configuration, choose which traffic to route, and decide what should happen if the tunnel disconnects.
What a router-level VPN does
In VPN client mode, the router connects outward to a VPN endpoint. Devices using the router can then send supported traffic through that connection, with coverage determined by the router’s firmware and routing rules. Some routers can route all eligible traffic; others let you choose devices or destinations. GL.iNet documents VPN traffic policies and controls in its VPN Dashboard guide.
This differs from running a VPN server at home. A server lets a remote device connect back to your home network, while a client connects the local network to a VPN endpoint. ASUS’s WireGuard server instructions describe a public WAN IP requirement for that server use case; that is not the same setup as connecting a router as a VPN client.

When configuring the router makes sense
The main benefit is central management: you configure the VPN connection once for supported devices behind the router. This can help with devices that do not support a VPN app, or when you want routing rules managed in one place rather than device by device.

- Coverage: Check whether the router routes all supported traffic or lets you select devices or destinations.
- Compatibility: The router’s client mode must support a protocol and configuration that your VPN provider supplies.
- Failure behavior: A kill switch may block ordinary internet access when the VPN client stops, but availability and behavior vary.
- Performance: There is no universal speed reduction figure. Check published specifications for your router model and measure your own connection under the conditions you use it.
A VPN app on each device can give you more direct per-device control, while router-level setup centralizes configuration. The right choice depends on the router’s policy features and which devices you need covered.
How to configure a VPN client on your router
1. Confirm model, firmware, and client support
Check the documentation for your exact router model and firmware. Confirm that it supports VPN client mode—not only VPN server mode—and that it supports the protocol used by the profile you plan to import, such as OpenVPN or WireGuard. ASUS provides a web-interface VPN client setup guide; GL.iNet documents OpenVPN client setup. Menu labels and supported options differ by manufacturer and model.

2. Get a compatible provider configuration
Obtain the configuration file, profile, or credentials from your VPN provider. For example, GL.iNet’s OpenVPN instructions direct users to obtain a configuration file from their provider and upload it to the router. Do not assume that a configuration for one protocol will work with another.
3. Import the profile and connect
Sign in to the router’s administration interface, open its VPN client section, add or import the provider profile, and connect. The exact screens, fields, and authentication requirements are model-specific, so follow the instructions for your router rather than relying on a menu path from another device.

4. Choose which traffic uses the tunnel
Set the routing scope your router supports. You may be able to send all eligible traffic through the VPN or apply rules to selected devices or destinations. Check the router’s documentation to see whether services initiated by the router itself also use the tunnel; that behavior may differ from traffic generated by connected devices.
5. Decide what happens if the VPN disconnects
If the router offers a kill switch or a block-non-VPN-traffic setting, decide whether to enable it. GL.iNet describes its Internet Kill Switch as blocking internet access for connected devices when the VPN client is not running; the feature depends on a running OpenVPN or WireGuard client. Read the Internet Kill Switch documentation and verify the behavior for your own model and firmware.

6. Check the connection and routing
After connecting, check that the VPN is active and that each device you intended to cover follows the selected routing policy. Also verify what happens when the VPN client is disconnected: with a kill switch enabled, the expected result may be that internet access is blocked; without one, traffic may use the ordinary connection. These practical checks can reveal a misconfiguration, but router features and routing behavior vary, so they are not a guarantee against every possible leak.

What to check before relying on the setup
- Confirm the VPN client remains connected after a router restart if persistent use matters to you.
- Check whether the router’s selected-device or destination rules match the devices and traffic you intend to cover.
- Review how the router handles DNS and router-originated traffic in its documentation; do not assume those follow the same rules as client-device traffic.
- Test the disconnect behavior on the actual router and firmware you use, especially if blocking non-VPN traffic is important.
- If performance is inadequate, compare your measured connection with and without the VPN under similar conditions, and consult the router’s model-specific specifications.
If your current router lacks VPN client support for the provider’s configuration, a router with compatible OpenVPN or WireGuard client functionality may be needed. Policy routing and kill switch support are separate features to verify; they are not guaranteed by the phrase “VPN router.”
