Press Windows key + Left Arrow or Windows key + Right Arrow to snap the active window to that side of your screen. Then choose another open window in Snap Assist to fill the space beside it.
Snap two windows side by side with the keyboard
- Bring the window you want to position to the foreground.
- Press Windows key + Left Arrow to snap it to the left, or Windows key + Right Arrow to snap it to the right. Release the Windows key when the window reaches the position you want.
- When Snap Assist shows thumbnails of your other open windows, select one to fill the remaining side.
- Drag the divider between the windows to adjust their relative widths.
Microsoft documents the left and right shortcuts as snapping a window to the corresponding half of the screen. The exact behavior can vary by app or configuration. Microsoft’s multitasking instructions explain the basic command, and its Snap Your Windows guide covers Snap Assist and resizing.
Use Snap layouts for more than two windows
On Windows 11, press Windows key + Z to open Snap layouts. Choose a layout, then select open windows for the remaining slots. The layouts offered can depend on your display size. You can also drag a window to the top of the screen to reveal the Snap bar, depending on the relevant setting.

When enabled, Snap Groups can help you return to a saved arrangement of snapped windows from taskbar hover, Task View, or Alt+Tab.

Adjust Snap settings or turn the feature off
Open Settings > System > Multitasking and check the Snap windows toggle and its options. These settings control Snap Assist suggestions, the Snap layouts flyout on a window’s maximize button, the top-of-screen Snap bar, Snap Groups, and snapping without dragging a window all the way to an edge. The labels and available options can vary by Windows version. See Microsoft’s Snap instructions for details.
Move a window to another monitor instead
If your goal is to move the active window to a display positioned to the left or right—not to snap it on the current display—press Windows key + Shift + Left Arrow or Windows key + Shift + Right Arrow. The Shift key distinguishes the monitor-moving shortcut from the side-snapping command. Microsoft’s Windows keyboard shortcut list documents both.

If the shortcut does not work
- Make sure the window you want to position is active before pressing the shortcut.
- Check Settings > System > Multitasking and confirm that Snap windows is on.
- If the window is already on the desired side but the second window has not appeared, select the other app from Snap Assist or position it with the opposite arrow shortcut.
- If you meant to change monitors, use the shortcut with Shift; Win+Left and Win+Right snap on a screen.
- On a keyboard without a Windows logo key, the keyboard shortcut is unavailable; you can use the mouse or touch methods in Microsoft’s Snap guide.
Windows version and support note
Microsoft’s Snap guide covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; standard free Windows Update updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on that date. This support-status change does not mean the Snap shortcut itself stopped working.
