Purple place pins on Google Maps are commonly associated with attractions such as museums, cinemas, amusement parks, monuments, historic sites, and photo spots. But Google does not define purple as a universal meaning for every map symbol. The icon’s shape, location, active layer, and details shown when you tap or click it are what tell you which kind of marker you’re seeing.

What purple place pins usually indicate

Recent reporting associates purple place pins with attractions, including museums, cinemas, amusement parks, monuments, historic sites, and photo opportunities. Treat that as a likely interpretation for a place pin—not as a rule that applies to every purple symbol. Google’s official map legend does not define purple as a universal category.

Google Maps uses different symbols and colors for different kinds of information. A purple line, station symbol, saved-place icon, or marker in a custom map may have a different explanation from a purple pin for a nearby place.

How to identify the symbol on your map

  1. Check its shape and details. Tap the symbol in the mobile app or click it on a computer. A place pin, transit feature, and custom marker are distinct map elements; the label or information card can help identify which one you selected.
  2. Check the map legend and active layers. Google’s legend groups map information by context, including traffic, transit, biking, terrain, and nearby places. Open the relevant layer or legend rather than interpreting color alone. Google Maps Help: Use layers to find places, traffic, terrain, biking & transit.
  3. Consider whether the marker is one of your saved places. Open Saved and inspect the lists shown on your map. You can show or hide eligible lists in Google Maps. Google Maps Help: Create a list of places.
  4. Check for a custom or shared map. If the marker appears in an imported or shared map, inspect that map’s legend and layers. In Google My Maps, the creator can choose feature colors and icons, so a purple marker may reflect that map’s styling rather than Google Maps’ general place categories. My Maps Help: Use map layers.

Other reasons a purple symbol may appear

A saved place or list

Saved places can appear as icons on your map, which may explain markers that seem personal or unexpected. Google Maps allows icon choices for eligible custom lists, while default lists have customization restrictions. Review the list in Saved and use its visibility controls if you want to hide it. Google also described saved-place icons appearing on the map in its 2017 announcement about saving and sharing favorite places.

A custom marker in Google My Maps

My Maps lets map creators style individual features or apply styling based on a data column. A purple marker in one of these maps is therefore meaningful within the creator’s map and legend; it is not necessarily a standard Google Maps symbol.

A transit line or station

Transit colors can follow the local transportation agency’s system. A purple transit line should not be read as an attraction pin. Check the transit layer and local map context to identify it.

Why are there purple icons all over my map?

A cluster or spread of purple markers may be attraction place pins, visible saved places, or custom features in a map layer. To narrow it down, select one marker, note whether it opens a place or transit detail, and check which lists and layers are visible. If the symbols belong to a shared My Maps overlay, use that map’s own legend.
