For a first viewing, watch the 2011 Puella Magi Madoka Magica television series (all 12 episodes), then watch Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion. If you prefer films, watch Beginnings and Eternal instead of the TV series, then continue with Rebellion. Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story is optional, and the 2025 Beginnings/Eternal TV Edition is an alternate television presentation rather than a replacement starting point.

The simplest first-watch order

The original television series is the clearest entry point because it is the work’s 2011, 12-episode starting story. Watch the episodes in their normal broadcast order, then move to Rebellion, the next main-story film in the practical viewing sequence. This route gives a new viewer the episodic presentation before introducing the theatrical continuation.

  1. Puella Magi Madoka Magica (2011 TV series) — watch all 12 episodes.
  2. Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion — watch after completing the TV series.
  3. Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story — optional; watch only if you want a separate side-story path centered on Iroha and Kamihama.

You do not need to insert Magia Record between the TV series and Rebellion. It is framed as a side story, not as a prerequisite for following the original series route.

What each entry contributes

The 2011 television series

The 12-episode TV anime establishes the core story and is the most straightforward way to begin. Its episode-by-episode pacing lets you encounter the opening premise, character relationships and major developments in the order designed for a television audience. Because the entire first season is short enough to complete as one viewing project, starting here avoids having to decide which film version corresponds to which portion of the opening story.

Use the TV series as your default recommendation if you are new to the franchise, want the original episodic structure or prefer to pause between installments. The official catalog identifies it as a 2011 television anime and describes a 12-episode run.

Beginnings and Eternal

The first two theatrical films, Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Beginnings and Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Eternal, are the film route through the original TV story. In practical watch-order guides, they are used as an alternative to the 12-episode series rather than as extra films that must be watched afterward.

Choose these two films when you want a feature-film presentation of the opening story, have less interest in an episodic format or are deliberately comparing the theatrical presentation with the television version. The available official listings confirm the original TV anime and the three-film group, but they do not establish a scene-by-scene inventory of every change. Treat the films as an alternate route through the beginning, not as a reason to claim that every cut, addition or rearrangement is identical to the series.

Rebellion

Rebellion follows the recommended opening route as the next main-story movie. Watch it after either the complete 12-episode series or the two-film route of Beginnings and Eternal. If you use the film route, do not skip directly from only one of the two recap films to Rebellion; the pair is the alternate presentation of the opening story.

The practical order is therefore:

  • TV route: 12-episode series → Rebellion.
  • Film route: Beginnings → Eternal → Rebellion.

A first-time viewer normally chooses one opening route. Watching the entire TV series and both recap films before Rebellion is optional comparison viewing, not a requirement. Doing both can make sense if you specifically want to compare formats or notice presentation differences, but it adds a second pass through the opening story.

Are the Madoka Magica movies remakes or a continuation?

The answer depends on which films you mean. Beginnings and Eternal are the two-film recap route through the story introduced by the original television series. They are an alternative way to experience that opening material, with the advantages and constraints of theatrical pacing.

Rebellion is the film to place after that opening route in a standard first-watch order. In other words, it is not interchangeable with either recap film in the sequence. A viewer who starts with the TV series should proceed to Rebellion; a viewer who starts with the films should complete both Beginnings and Eternal first.

It is safest to describe the first two films as an alternate film presentation without promising exact scene-level equivalence. Official pages retrieved for the title confirm the existence of the TV anime and the three-film group, but do not provide a complete, authoritative list of every difference between the series and the recap films.

TV series or two-film route?

Both routes lead into the same practical next step, but they suit different viewing habits. Use this comparison to choose before you start:

Choice Format and pacing Best for What comes next
Original TV series 12 episodes from 2011; episodic pacing First-time viewers, viewers who want the original television structure or people who like stopping between episodes Rebellion
Beginnings + Eternal Two feature films presenting the opening story Viewers who prefer films or want the alternate theatrical presentation Rebellion
Both versions Series plus two films; a repeat viewing of the opening material Viewers comparing adaptations or film-specific presentation changes Rebellion after both, if desired

The available material does not support a reliable scene-by-scene table of additions and removals, so choose on format and pacing rather than on an assumed list of precise edits.

Where Magia Record fits

Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story is optional. It follows Iroha’s story in Kamihama and is framed as a side story, so it is not needed to understand the original TV-series-to-Rebellion path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want only the core story

Skip Magia Record until after the TV series and Rebellion, or leave it unwatched. Nothing in the recommended core sequence requires you to add it between those entries.

If you want the side-story branch

Start with the original series so you understand the franchise’s baseline, then watch Magia Record as a separate branch when you are ready for Iroha’s Kamihama story. You can then watch or revisit the core films without treating the side story as a missing chapter in the main order.

Calling it optional does not mean it is unimportant to viewers who want that branch. It means the side-story framing does not make it a prerequisite for the original series route.

What the 2025 Beginnings/Eternal TV Edition is

An official page identifies the 2025 Beginnings/Eternal TV Edition as a television edition of the two-part film story. Japanese broadcasting began on October 12, 2025. It is best understood as an alternate television presentation of the material covered by the two-part film route.

For this watch-order guide, the 2025 edition does not displace the original 2011 series as the simplest first-watch recommendation. If you choose it, treat it as your opening presentation instead of watching the original series and both recap films on the same first pass. The practical decision remains the same: choose one way to experience the opening story, then move to Rebellion when you want the next main-story film.

The date above refers to the Japanese broadcast start. It should not be read as a guarantee that the edition launched simultaneously in every country.

Recommended routes by viewer type

You are watching the franchise for the first time

  1. Watch the 12 episodes of the 2011 TV series.
  2. Watch Rebellion.
  3. Add Magia Record later only if you want Iroha’s Kamihama side story.

This is the least complicated route and the one least likely to make you wonder whether you have skipped a required opening installment.

You prefer films to episodic television

  1. Watch Beginnings.
  2. Watch Eternal.
  3. Watch Rebellion.

Do not treat Beginnings as a standalone substitute for both opening films. The alternate route consists of the pair.

You want to compare versions

  1. Watch the 12-episode TV series first.
  2. Watch Beginnings and Eternal as a comparison pass.
  3. Watch Rebellion after you have completed the opening material.

This approach is for viewers who actively want to compare episodic and theatrical presentations. It is not necessary for understanding the story.

You want the side story as well

Complete either opening route, watch Rebellion, then use Magia Record as an optional side-story branch. Placing it after the core route keeps the main recommendation easy to follow while still leaving room for the Kamihama storyline.

Availability, editions and regional checks

Streaming availability is territory- and time-sensitive. Aniplex’s official Japanese listing names Japanese streaming platforms and warns that distribution dates or schedules can change; those listings do not establish availability worldwide.

Before you start, check the catalog for your own country and the date you plan to watch. Search for the exact title and format you selected—12-episode TV series, each of the two recap films, Rebellion, Magia Record or the 2025 TV Edition—because a service may carry one format without carrying the others.

  • Confirm that all 12 TV episodes are available if you choose the original-series route.
  • Confirm that both Beginnings and Eternal are available if you choose the film route.
  • Check that Rebellion is listed separately; it is the next main-story film, not a name for the two-film recap set.
  • Verify country, language, subtitle and dub options in the service’s current listing rather than relying on an old availability article.
  • Recheck schedules for the 2025 TV Edition, since a Japanese broadcast date does not establish a simultaneous international release.

For viewers who prefer physical media, Aniplex of America lists a Blu-ray box set for the original TV series and Blu-ray volumes for Magia Record. Inventory, region compatibility and edition details can vary, so verify those particulars with the retailer and your playback equipment before purchasing.

Common watch-order mistakes

Starting with Rebellion

Rebellion is positioned after the opening story. Watching it first removes the context provided by either the 12-episode series or the two recap films, so use one of those routes before starting the film.

Watching only one recap film

Beginnings and Eternal are a pair. If you select the theatrical route, plan for both before Rebellion.

Assuming Magia Record is mandatory

The side-story designation matters for watch order. Iroha’s Kamihama story is optional for someone following the original series and Rebellion; it is not a missing episode in that sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watching every version on a first pass by default

The TV series and the first two films serve as alternative opening routes. Watching all three before moving on is a valid comparison project, but it repeats the opening material and is unnecessary if your goal is simply to reach the next main-story film.

Treating a Japanese listing as a global release promise

Platform catalogs, release dates and schedules differ by territory and can change. Use the current listing for your country, not a platform name copied from a Japanese announcement.

A spoiler-safe decision checklist

  • Want the clearest default? Choose the 2011, 12-episode TV series.
  • Want films only? Choose Beginnings and Eternal as a pair.
  • Ready for the next main-story movie? Watch Rebellion after either opening route.
  • Interested in Iroha and Kamihama? Add Magia Record as an optional side story.
  • Interested in the 2025 television presentation? Treat the Beginnings/Eternal TV Edition as an alternate opening format.
  • Unsure what is available? Check the current catalog in your country on the day you plan to watch.
