Choose the rocket by destination orbit, spacecraft mass, deployment complexity and human-rating—not by vehicle name alone. PSLV is the usual fit for polar, sun-synchronous, navigation and rideshare missions. GSLV is aimed at medium communication spacecraft that need geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO) insertion. LVM3 is the heavy-lift option for large communications payloads, substantial low-Earth-orbit (LEO) spacecraft, lunar missions and the human-rated Gaganyaan architecture.
The figures below are published vehicle capabilities, not a guaranteed performance quote for every trajectory. A launch provider must still check the exact spacecraft mass, separation hardware, target orbit, launch-site constraints and integration plan.
Quick decision: match the mission to the launcher
| Vehicle | Published capability | Best-fit missions | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| PSLV | Up to 1,750 kg to a 600 km sun-synchronous polar orbit, according to ISRO’s current PSLV specification | Earth observation, navigation, polar and sun-synchronous missions, rideshare, multi-satellite and multi-orbit deployments | Capacity depends on the selected PSLV variant and trajectory; it is not the heavy-lift choice |
| GSLV | About 2.0 tonnes to GTO in ISRO’s launch-vehicle technical material | Medium communication satellites that need GTO insertion, including INSAT-class missions | Less lift margin than LVM3; spacecraft mass and the required transfer orbit must be checked together |
| LVM3 | 4,000 kg to GTO and 8,000 kg to a 600 km LEO on ISRO’s current technical page | Heavy communications spacecraft, large LEO payloads, lunar exploration and human-spaceflight development | Larger vehicle and more demanding mission integration; obtain mission-specific service terms |
ISRO’s 2024 launch-vehicle technical material also describes LVM3 as roughly 4 tonnes to GTO or about 10 tonnes to LEO. The difference from the current page’s LEO figure reflects the reference mission and performance assumptions; it should not be treated as a universal payload guarantee.
What each Indian launcher is designed to do
PSLV: the flexible orbital-workhorse
The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle is a four-stage launcher available in several configurations with different numbers of strap-on boosters. That modularity lets the mission team select a version appropriate to payload mass and trajectory rather than using one fixed vehicle for every flight.

ISRO describes PSLV as versatile across all three broad payload categories: Earth-observation, geostationary and navigation spacecraft. In practical terms, it is the natural starting point when a mission must reach a polar or sun-synchronous orbit, when several spacecraft must be deployed in one flight, or when a sequence of releases is required in more than one orbit.
PSLV’s flexibility does not mean every payload can share one standard service. The chosen variant, fairing, separation system, orbit-raising requirements and allowable deployment sequence all affect the usable performance. A rideshare customer should therefore request the performance of the specific mission configuration, not rely only on the headline polar-orbit number.
GSLV: medium-class GTO access
Geosynchronous transfer orbit is the elongated transfer orbit used to place many communications satellites on a path toward geostationary orbit. GSLV occupies the medium-lift position for spacecraft whose mass and transfer-orbit requirements exceed a typical PSLV mission but do not justify LVM3’s larger capacity.
Its practical role is a roughly two-tonne-class communications mission to GTO. That makes GSLV relevant to INSAT-class and similar spacecraft when the satellite, adapter and mission trajectory fit within the available margin. If the spacecraft is close to the vehicle’s limit, the provider must evaluate propellant reserves, injection accuracy, adapter mass and any special disposal or deployment requirements before committing.
LVM3: heavy lift for demanding payloads
LVM3 is ISRO’s heavy-lift launcher. Its configuration uses two S200 solid boosters, an L110 liquid core stage and a C25 cryogenic upper stage. The architecture provides substantially more lift than GSLV for both GTO and LEO missions.
That margin supports large communications satellites, sizeable LEO spacecraft and exploration missions that must send a spacecraft beyond Earth orbit. LVM3’s mission set includes Chandrayaan-3, while recent launch-register examples include CMS-03 and BlueBird Block-2. A large payload may still need a custom trajectory or deployment plan, so the published capability is a screening value rather than a substitute for mission analysis.

How to choose: a mission-planning sequence
- Define the destination orbit. Record the required altitude, inclination, eccentricity, local-time requirement for imaging, and whether the launcher must inject directly or leave the spacecraft to perform additional orbit raising. “LEO” and “GTO” are not interchangeable performance cases.
- Freeze the launch mass. Use the mass at separation, including the spacecraft, dispenser, adapter, separation hardware and any protective or mission-specific equipment. Keep a margin for late design changes rather than matching the vehicle limit exactly.
- List every deployment event. A single satellite, a rideshare cluster, a navigation constellation plane and a multi-orbit mission impose different sequencing and attitude-control requirements. More releases can make a flexible launcher more valuable than a simple mass comparison suggests.
- Check environmental and interface requirements. Confirm fairing dimensions, vibration and acoustic limits, electrical interfaces, separation-system compatibility, hazardous-material rules and processing-site needs.
- Choose the smallest vehicle with credible margin. PSLV is generally the efficient fit for compatible polar and sun-synchronous missions; GSLV is the medium GTO option; LVM3 is appropriate when mass, orbit or mission complexity requires its larger capability.
- Request a mission-specific assessment. Ask the launch-service provider to confirm injected orbit, residual performance, separation accuracy, schedule, insurance interfaces and all recurring and non-recurring integration charges.
Worked example 1: Earth-observation spacecraft to sun-synchronous orbit
Why PSLV is the first candidate
Suppose an imaging spacecraft needs a sun-synchronous polar orbit and its launch mass, including the dispenser, falls within the selected PSLV configuration’s performance. PSLV directly matches the orbit family and has extensive experience with Earth-observation payloads. A rideshare arrangement can also make sense when the operator accepts a shared launch window and a coordinated deployment sequence.

Checks before booking
- Confirm the exact altitude and inclination, not merely “sun-synchronous.”
- Verify that the spacecraft’s mass includes all separation hardware.
- Determine whether other payloads are released before or after yours and how long the spacecraft must remain in a safe configuration.
- Check whether the mission needs more than one orbital plane or a later secondary deployment; those requirements may affect the selected PSLV variant and mission profile.
ISRO’s mission register lists PSLV examples including Aditya-L1 in 2023 and XPoSat in 2024. Those flights demonstrate the launcher’s broad mission role, but they do not establish the performance available to a different spacecraft.
Worked example 2: communications satellite of roughly two tonnes
When GSLV fits
A communications spacecraft near the two-tonne class that requires GTO insertion is the classic GSLV screening case. The mission team should compare the spacecraft’s separation mass with the transfer-orbit requirement and verify that the resulting margin supports the intended operational orbit-raising plan.
When to move up to LVM3
Choose LVM3 instead when the spacecraft is materially heavier, when the adapter and mission equipment consume too much GSLV margin, or when the customer needs growth room for a late payload increase. The larger launcher can also be preferable when schedule, deployment architecture or future spacecraft variants make additional lift valuable, subject to an actual service quotation.
GSLV missions in ISRO’s register include NISAR in 2025 and EOS-05 in 2026. These examples indicate the vehicle’s medium-class role; they are not a promise that every two-tonne spacecraft will receive the same orbit or launch conditions.
Worked example 3: heavy GTO payload, lunar spacecraft or human-spaceflight mission
Heavy communications payload
For a communications satellite whose GTO mass approaches or exceeds the practical GSLV envelope, LVM3 provides the appropriate heavy-lift starting point. The team still needs a trajectory-specific calculation because payload mass, injection energy, fairing use and separation hardware determine the actual deliverable orbit.

Lunar exploration
A lunar mission has requirements beyond simply reaching LEO. The launcher must place the spacecraft into an Earth-bound departure orbit or transfer trajectory that supports subsequent lunar operations. LVM3’s role in Chandrayaan-3 illustrates why a heavy launcher is selected for this class of mission, although each lunar flight has its own energy and payload analysis.
Human spaceflight
For a crewed or crew-development mission, the relevant choice is not a standard PSLV or GSLV flight. ISRO’s 2025–26 annual report states that a human-rated LVM3 configuration, called HLVM3, has been qualified and is ready for the first uncrewed Gaganyaan mission. Human-rating adds requirements for crew safety, fault tolerance, abort capability, monitoring and certification that do not apply to an ordinary satellite launch.
Orbit matters as much as payload mass
A launcher’s advertised mass capability is always tied to an orbit and a trajectory. Delivering a payload to a 600 km sun-synchronous orbit, to a circular equatorial orbit, or to GTO requires different amounts of energy and may leave different residual margins. Two spacecraft with the same mass can therefore require different launch vehicles if their target orbits differ.

The launch analysis must answer: to which orbit, at what injection accuracy, with what separation hardware, and with how much reserve? Customers should treat a published number as an initial filter and ask for a performance curve or mission analysis for the exact target conditions.
Deployment complexity: one satellite versus many
Single-spacecraft missions
A single payload usually simplifies separation timing, attitude planning and contamination control. In this case, the lowest vehicle that meets the orbit and mass requirement may offer the simplest integration path.
Rideshare and multi-satellite missions
Rideshare missions trade dedicated-launch control for shared cost and access. The provider must coordinate payload interfaces, release order, collision-avoidance geometry, radio-frequency constraints and safeing procedures among several customers. PSLV’s configuration options and established multi-payload role make it a common candidate, but suitability depends on the actual manifest.

Multi-orbit deployments
When spacecraft must be released into different orbits, the mission may require controlled coast phases, upper-stage reorientation and carefully timed separations. A launcher that has enough raw lift but cannot support the required sequence is not a valid choice. Ask for the complete deployment timeline and each spacecraft’s injected-orbit specification.

Commercial and procurement realities
ISRO’s launch-services information says NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) offers both rideshare and dedicated missions, with payload separation systems and adapters across India’s launch-service portfolio. That means a customer can ask for either a shared flight or a mission arranged around one principal payload, subject to availability and technical fit.
Official public material does not provide a comparable, universal price-per-kilogram table for PSLV, GSLV and LVM3. Pricing depends on orbit, spacecraft processing, adapters, payload separation, campaign duration, special analyses, insurance interfaces and other mission-specific work. A smaller rocket is not automatically cheaper once a dedicated mission, unusual orbit or extensive integration is included.
Schedule should be treated the same way. Public launch records show what has flown, but they do not constitute a guaranteed date for a new customer. Obtain written terms covering manifest position, launch-window assumptions, rescheduling rights, acceptance tests and responsibilities after a delay.

Assuming all PSLV variants are identical
PSLV’s strap-on configurations change vehicle performance and mission characteristics. Identify the proposed variant in the technical and commercial offer.
Treating GSLV and LVM3 as interchangeable
Both can serve GTO missions, but they occupy different lift classes. A spacecraft close to the GSLV envelope may require LVM3 once fairing, adapter and reserve requirements are included.
Confusing a satellite mission with a crew mission
Human spaceflight requires the human-rated HLVM3 architecture and its additional safety and certification framework. Standard satellite-launch assumptions are not sufficient.

How mission examples map to the three vehicles
| Mission need | Initial vehicle choice | Reasoning | Qualification to obtain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Earth-imaging satellite to sun-synchronous polar orbit | PSLV | Orbit and mission heritage align with PSLV’s versatile polar and Earth-observation role | Variant-specific performance, rideshare sequence and exact injected orbit |
| Navigation payload or several small spacecraft | PSLV | Flexible configurations and multi-satellite deployment capability | Release order, orbital-plane requirements and separation-system compatibility |
| Communications spacecraft around two tonnes to GTO | GSLV | Matches the medium GTO class when adequate margin remains | Spacecraft-plus-adapter mass, transfer orbit and orbit-raising plan |
| Large communications satellite to GTO | LVM3 | Provides the heavy-lift margin beyond the medium class | Trajectory-specific performance, fairing fit and integration schedule |
| Large LEO spacecraft | LVM3 | Higher published LEO capability supports larger payloads | Reference-orbit assumptions and exact configuration used for the quote |
| Lunar exploration spacecraft | LVM3 | Heavy-lift architecture supports the energy and payload needs of lunar missions | Departure trajectory, spacecraft propulsion and launch-window constraints |
| Gaganyaan crew-development mission | HLVM3 | Human-rated LVM3 architecture is the relevant system | Certification, abort, crew-safety and mission-readiness requirements |
Final selection framework
- If the target is polar or sun-synchronous LEO and the payload fits the selected configuration, start with PSLV.
- If the target is GTO and the spacecraft is in the medium, roughly two-tonne class, evaluate GSLV first.
- If the spacecraft is heavy, the mission goes beyond ordinary LEO delivery, or substantial growth margin is required, evaluate LVM3.
- If people are involved, evaluate the human-rated HLVM3 architecture rather than a standard satellite launcher.
- Before signing, require a provider-issued performance analysis and a commercial offer that states orbit, mass basis, interfaces, schedule assumptions and included services.
PSLV, GSLV and LVM3 are complementary systems, not three interchangeable sizes of the same service. The correct choice is the smallest vehicle that can meet the exact orbit and deployment plan with documented margin—or the human-rated architecture when crew safety is part of the mission.
