A reported PlayStation 6 RAM-and-storage bill has passed $680, according to a leaker claim summarized by OC3D on October 17, 2026. That figure covers RAM and NAND storage only—not the processor, graphics hardware, cooling system, case, power supply, assembly, distribution, or retail margin. A separate, unverified calculation puts the entire component bill near $960, but Sony has not confirmed the PS6’s hardware, launch date, manufacturing cost, or price.

What the “over $680” PS6 cost actually covers

The headline number is a PS6 RAM cost plus PS6 SSD cost claim. OC3D reported that a leaker put Sony’s combined memory and NAND-storage expense at “over $680.” It is not a quote for a complete console.

The claim excludes the CPU, GPU, motherboard, cooling, power supply, chassis, optical-drive hardware if Sony offers one, assembly, software packaging, shipping, retailer costs, taxes, and Sony’s commercial margin. It also does not establish how much RAM or NAND capacity the alleged configuration contains. Without a parts list or supplier confirmation, the figure cannot be independently checked.

How the PS6 price estimate reached almost $1,000

The larger figure comes from a separate estimate attributed to leaker KeplerL2 and reported in a chronology covered by TechSpot. The numbers changed during 2026:

June 2026 About $200 higher than the earlier estimate Updated BOM estimate, described as nearing four digits Leaker update reported by TechSpot
2026 calculation About $960 Arithmetic derived from the earlier estimate and increase Igor’s Lab says it is not a directly stated or independently verified total
October 17, 2026 Over $680 RAM plus NAND storage only Unverified leaker claim summarized by OC3D

Igor’s Lab cautioned that the roughly $960 number came from a single forum post and was not supported by a component list or supplier confirmation. It should therefore be treated as a speculative BOM calculation, not Sony’s official manufacturing cost.

Why a component estimate is not a retail price

A bill of materials is the estimated cost of physical parts. Manufacturing cost adds labor, testing, tooling, factory overhead, packaging, logistics, warranty provisions, and other expenses. A retail price is a separate decision that also reflects regional taxes, retailer economics, exchange rates, launch strategy, and whether Sony subsidizes the hardware to build a user base.

That distinction matters when asking, “Will PS6 cost $1,000?” A near-$960 BOM would make a four-figure retail price plausible in some scenarios, but it does not prove one. Sony could alter memory capacity, storage capacity, chip designs, suppliers, or launch timing before production. It could also accept a lower margin, sell at a loss initially, or offer different configurations. None of those choices has been confirmed.

What Sony has—and has not—confirmed

Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki said, as quoted by TechRadar, “We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices.” That statement means there is currently no confirmed PS6 launch date and no official PS6 price.

Totoki also said memory prices were expected to remain very high in fiscal year 2027 because supply would still be constrained, adding that Sony would need to think carefully under that assumption. Persistent memory pressure could raise the cost of a high-capacity console, but it does not reveal the PS6’s final specification or launch price.

What could push the PS6 price up or down?

Factors that could increase the launch price

  • Expensive high-bandwidth RAM and large-capacity NAND storage.
  • Higher chip, cooling, power-delivery, and manufacturing costs than the current generation.
  • Continued memory shortages into fiscal year 2027.
  • A strategy that prioritizes recovering hardware costs instead of subsidizing the console.

Factors that could reduce or contain the price

  • Lower memory or storage capacity than the configuration implied by the leak.
  • Design changes, improved yields, or negotiated supplier pricing before mass production.
  • A delayed launch that gives component prices time to change.
  • Sony accepting a smaller initial margin or launching more than one hardware tier.

These are pricing mechanisms, not predictions. The available claims do not establish which path Sony will choose.

How the PS5 Pro comparison should be read

TechSpot reports a current PlayStation 5 Pro retail price of $899. That is a real, presently available product price and can help frame the discussion, but it is not evidence of PS6 pricing. The PS5 Pro and an unreleased PS6 may use different chips, memory arrangements, storage capacities, launch strategies, and regional pricing.

Buying a current console gives you a known price and available games now. Waiting for the PS6 avoids committing before Sony publishes specifications, but leaves the launch date, final price, capacity, and availability uncertain. No PS6 listing or compatible accessory can be verified until Sony confirms the platform.

How to evaluate the next PS6 cost report

  1. Check what is being counted. Determine whether the number covers RAM and NAND only, a complete BOM, manufacturing, or a retail package.
  2. Look for a parts list. A credible estimate should identify memory type, capacity, storage components, processor, graphics hardware, and the date of the pricing assumptions.
  3. Separate confirmed statements from leaks. Sony’s published comments carry a different evidentiary weight from an anonymous forum post repeated by media outlets.
  4. Check the date and market. Memory prices, exchange rates, taxes, and regional retail prices can change quickly.
  5. Wait for Sony’s specification and price announcement. Until then, treat “over $680,” “about $960,” and any claimed PS6 price as estimates rather than confirmed figures.

Bottom line

The reported PS6 RAM-and-NAND cost has exceeded $680, but that is only two component categories and remains an unverified leaker claim. The approximately $960 figure is a derived BOM estimate, not an official manufacturing cost. Sony has not confirmed the PS6 launch date, specifications, or price, so the question “is the PS6 price confirmed?” still has a clear answer: no.
