You cannot price a complete PS6 purchase yet. Sony has not announced the console’s launch date, retail price, game prices, storage design or accessory compatibility. In a report on Sony’s May 2026 financial-results discussion, GameSpot quoted Sony president and CEO Hiroki Totoki: “We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices.”
What you can do now is separate confirmed running costs from unknown launch costs. The clearest current baseline is PlayStation Plus in the United States: $79.99 per year for Essential, $134.99 for Extra or $159.99 for Premium. Those are existing PS4/PS5 service prices, not PS6 prices. Games, storage expansion, a second controller and a headset will be additional decisions rather than unavoidable items in one fixed bundle.
What is confirmed—and what is not
A PS6 ownership budget has two very different parts. Sony has published prices for some current services and PS5 accessories, but it has not published a PS6 hardware price or specifications. Treat every supposed PS6 price, release date, storage capacity or accessory list elsewhere as unconfirmed until Sony makes an announcement.

This distinction prevents a common budgeting error: treating today’s PS5 products as if they were confirmed PS6 products.

Start with the recurring online-play cost
For most paid games with online multiplayer, PlayStation Plus is the predictable annual service line. Sony describes Essential, Extra and Premium as paid plans that all include online multiplayer, monthly games, discounts, cloud storage and Share Play. Extra adds the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics. Premium adds the Classics Catalog, game trials and cloud streaming.
The following are the current United States prices shown on Sony’s PlayStation Plus page and observed in 2026. They are a planning baseline for the existing service, not a promise of PS6 pricing.

Choose a tier by how you play
- Essential: The relevant minimum for a player who mainly buys individual games and needs online multiplayer, cloud storage and monthly benefits.
- Extra: Adds a catalog that can reduce the number of games you buy outright, but only if the titles you want remain included and you are comfortable with catalog availability changing.
- Premium: Makes sense only when its Classics Catalog, trials or cloud streaming matter to you. It is not required merely to play online.
Some free-to-play games do not require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer. Check the requirement for each game rather than assuming that every online title is covered by the same rule.

Games are the largest unknown variable
Sony has not confirmed a PS6 launch lineup or PS6 game-price list, so assigning a dollar amount to a typical PS6 game would be speculation. Instead, calculate games from your own buying pattern:
- List the number of new releases you normally buy in a year.
- Separate launch-window purchases from games bought during sales.
- Mark which titles could be covered by a subscription catalog and which must be purchased.
- Decide whether you buy physical editions, digital editions or a mixture; the hardware edition you choose may affect that decision.
- Add expansions, season passes and paid upgrades separately from the base game.
Physical and digital spending
A future PS6 comparison should record physical versus digital game pricing rather than assuming one format is always cheaper. Physical copies can be resold or bought second-hand, while digital purchases are tied to an account and depend on the platform’s store policies. Digital discounts may be convenient, but they do not create a resale value. Sony has not published PS6 edition details, so keep both paths in your worksheet.
Subscription catalogs are not ownership
A catalog can lower the number of full-price purchases, but access normally depends on an active subscription and the game remaining in the catalog. If you want permanent access to a title, budget for a purchase even when a catalog version is available. This is a usage choice, not a confirmed PS6 price.

Storage can become a second hardware purchase
Modern games can consume enough space that the advertised internal capacity may not meet a large library’s needs. Sony’s current PS5 guidance illustrates the possible cost categories, but it does not establish PS6 compatibility.

What to check before buying an expansion drive
- Whether Sony certifies the drive for PS6, including its size, interface and sustained performance.
- Whether the drive can run current-generation games or only store them for transfer.
- The maximum supported capacity and whether installing a heatsink is required.
- Whether a firmware update or a specific system software version is needed.
- Whether a PS5 drive can be reformatted or migrated without deleting data.
Until those specifications exist, buying a PS5 expansion drive specifically for a future PS6 is a compatibility gamble. Buy one for a PS5 you already own, not on the assumption that Sony will carry the standard forward.
Controllers, audio and other optional accessories
Extra hardware is optional for a single-player owner but quickly becomes part of the budget for local multiplayer, competitive play or long sessions. Sony’s United States catalog currently lists a DualSense wireless controller from $74 and a DualSense Edge from $199. Those are PS5 starting prices; neither price nor compatibility establishes a PS6 accessory.

For a realistic household budget, count one replacement-controller reserve if several people use the console. Do not add a second controller, headset or camera to the minimum purchase unless your use case requires it.

Backward compatibility and accessory support can change the first-year total more than a small difference in console price. Sony has not confirmed the PS6’s backward-compatibility policy, controller support or storage migration rules.

Ask whether PS5 physical discs, PS5 digital licenses and saved data will transfer. A digital license may be account-based, while a disc requires compatible hardware and a disc drive. Cloud saves can simplify migration, but access to cloud storage is one of the benefits Sony currently associates with PlayStation Plus; the exact PS6 transfer process is not published.

Controllers and peripherals
Even if an old controller can connect, advanced features may not work. A future compatibility notice should be checked for wireless pairing, adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, headset audio, charging docks and cameras separately.
Storage migration
Do not erase a PS5 expansion drive until Sony explains whether PS6 can read it, requires reformatting or permits direct game transfer. Keep important saves synchronized and maintain an independent backup where possible.

Use one-time, recurring and usage-based columns. This keeps unknown launch figures from being mistaken for established prices.

Separate the minimum purchase from your preferred setup
Your minimum setup is the console, one compatible controller, one game if needed and any service required for the games you intend to play online. A preferred setup may add a larger drive, a second controller, a headset, charging equipment and a higher PlayStation Plus tier. Keeping those lists separate shows which costs are unavoidable and which reflect comfort or library size.
Regional price and tax checks
The subscription figures above are United States prices. Sony can set different prices, taxes, currencies, billing intervals and promotional terms in other regions. A US annual price should not be converted directly into a guaranteed local cost. At launch, compare the price displayed for your account region, whether tax is included, the renewal price after any promotion and the cancellation or refund terms.
When to make a purchase decision
- Before announcements: Do not buy PS5 accessories solely for PS6. Buy only for a current PS5 need.
- When specifications appear: Record the console editions, included storage, disc-drive policy, controller in the box and backward compatibility.
- When games are listed: Separate launch titles from later releases and note physical, digital and subscription availability.
- At preorder: Check the exact bundle contents, regional tax, warranty, delivery date and return policy.
- After launch: Confirm expansion-drive certification and accessory firmware support before adding storage or peripherals.
Bottom line
The PS6’s final ownership cost cannot be stated honestly yet because Sony has not set the console’s launch timing or price and has not published PS6 game, storage or accessory specifications. For planning, reserve a recurring-service line using the current US PlayStation Plus baselines—$79.99 Essential, $134.99 Extra or $159.99 Premium annually—then treat games, storage, controllers and audio as separate variable purchases. Revisit the worksheet only when Sony publishes PS6-specific prices and compatibility details.
