Choose the PS5 if Sony’s current first-party games are your priority. Choose the Xbox Series X if playing a larger selection of older console games matters more. Sony’s catalog includes Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, God of War Ragnarök, Returnal, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Gran Turismo 7, ASTRO BOT and Demon’s Souls. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S backward-compatibility program covers Xbox One games plus selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox titles, with some older games enhanced to resolutions up to 4K.

The important qualification is scope. PS5 compatibility is primarily a supported-PS4-games question, while Xbox compatibility reaches back across three Xbox generations but remains selective for Xbox 360 and Original Xbox software. Your existing games and the specific franchises you want should decide the purchase.

Which console has the better exclusives?

For a buyer asking specifically about Sony’s first-party franchises, the PS5 is the clearer choice. Sony’s official PlayStation Studios catalog identifies a substantial group of recognizable PS5-era games, including:

  • Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
  • Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut
  • God of War Ragnarök
  • Returnal

  • Gran Turismo 7
  • ASTRO BOT
  • Demon’s Souls

Sony’s current PS5 games page also lists newer or upcoming releases such as Marvel’s Wolverine, MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, SAROS and Marathon. Release timing and platform availability can change, so treat those entries as a snapshot of Sony’s current catalog rather than a permanent promise about every future release.

What the PS5 catalog means in practice

The PS5 advantage is not simply the number of games carrying a PlayStation label. It is the concentration of Sony-owned series that many buyers are choosing the console to play: superhero action in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, story-driven action in God of War Ragnarök and Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, racing in Gran Turismo 7, family-friendly platforming in ASTRO BOT and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and more demanding action in Returnal and Demon’s Souls.

That makes the PS5 a good fit when you already know which Sony franchises you want. A console is a poor value if its headline games do not interest you, so use the individual titles—not a generic “exclusive” score—as your test.

Why an Xbox exclusives verdict needs more qualification

The available Xbox evidence is strongest on backward compatibility, not on a complete count of games that are permanently exclusive to Series X. Microsoft’s release strategy can place Xbox-published games in a broader ecosystem, including PC and, depending on the title, other platforms. It would therefore be misleading to call every Xbox-published game a permanent Series X exclusive without checking that game’s current platform status.

For this comparison, Xbox’s defensible advantage is ecosystem access: the Series X can be the place where an existing Xbox One collection, selected Xbox 360 games and selected Original Xbox games continue to work. If a particular new Xbox title is the reason you are shopping, verify its current platforms separately instead of assuming the console is the only way to play it.

Which console has better backward compatibility?

Xbox Series X is the stronger choice for backward compatibility. Microsoft describes Xbox Series X|S backward compatibility as free and says it lets owners play “select XBOX 360, Original XBOX games, and XBOX One games you already own on XBOX Series X|S.” That gives Xbox a documented reach across Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Original Xbox generations.

PS5’s native backward-compatibility focus is supported PS4 games. Sony’s support documentation is the authority for determining whether a particular PS4 game works on PS5. Some supported games can receive performance benefits through PS5 features, but the exact behavior depends on the title.

PS5 compatibility: what is supported

Think of PS5 compatibility as a title-by-title PS4 check. Sony’s official support list should be consulted before you buy or reinstall a specific game. The list is more reliable than a general assumption that every PS4 release behaves identically on PS5.

Controller behavior is also documented at the game level. Sony states that the DualSense wireless controller, DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller and PlayStation officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers work on PS5 consoles with supported PS4 games. That statement applies to supported PS4 software; it should not be read as a guarantee that every controller feature works in every game.

Xbox Series X compatibility: three generations, selective coverage

Xbox Series X|S compatibility includes Xbox One games and selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games. The word selected is the key limitation. Xbox 360 and Original Xbox compatibility is not a universal emulator for every title released on those systems, so check the individual game in Microsoft’s compatibility catalog before relying on it.

Microsoft also documents enhancements for selected titles. Compatible games can render at resolutions up to 4K, and the program can provide a more capable presentation than the original release. The available enhancement depends on the game; a resolution ceiling for selected titles is not a promise that every compatible game runs at 4K.

Cross-generation multiplayer can work through system-link play when the supported game includes that feature. This is another title-level condition: compatibility with the console does not automatically add system-link functionality to software that never supported it.

How the two approaches differ for games you already own

If your collection is mostly PS4

PS5 is the natural upgrade path when your older library is primarily PS4 software. Start with Sony’s official PS4-on-PS5 support list and check every important game. Record whether the listing identifies any PS5 feature or performance benefit, and confirm how your controller is supported before assuming that a specialized input feature carries over.

This process matters for a large collection because compatibility is an official-list question, not a blanket statement about every PS4 game. The list also gives you a way to resolve edge cases before you spend money on a console or a replacement copy.

If your collection spans Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Original Xbox

Series X has the stronger continuity story. Xbox One games are part of the documented program, while Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games are included when Microsoft has selected them for compatibility. Because the older-generation catalog is selective, make a title list and verify each entry rather than counting on the console to accept every disc or digital license from those generations.

Microsoft’s wording that you can play games you already own is especially relevant if your purchase is driven by an existing library. Confirm the game’s listing and the ownership format you use before assuming that a particular copy will be recognized.

If you own games on both platforms

Separate the decision into two lists: games you must keep playing and games you want to start. For the first list, verify compatibility title by title. For the second, compare the PS5 first-party games you actually want with the Xbox titles and legacy games that matter to you. A longer compatibility program is valuable only when it includes the games in your collection.

Disc ownership and digital-library continuity

Backward compatibility does not mean that every physical disc, digital purchase or regional edition behaves identically. The official documentation establishes supported software, but the individual title listing remains the controlling reference.

For Xbox, the free backward-compatibility program is explicitly described as allowing play of games you already own, covering Xbox One and selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox titles. Use Microsoft’s listing to confirm the exact game before relying on a disc or digital entitlement.

For PS5, Sony’s support documentation establishes support for listed PS4 games. It does not turn every PS4 title into a universal compatibility guarantee, so check the title before assuming that an older purchase will transfer in the way you expect. If preserving an existing collection is your main reason for upgrading, write down each game and verify it before choosing the console.

Enhancement features and what they do—and do not—promise

PS5 enhancements

Some supported PS4 games may benefit from PS5 features. The benefit can be game-specific, so avoid treating “plays on PS5” and “receives a visible performance improvement” as the same claim. Check Sony’s entry for the particular game and look for any qualification attached to its PS5 behavior.

Xbox enhancements

Microsoft says selected backward-compatible games can render at resolutions up to 4K. This is a documented capability for selected titles, not a universal output specification for the entire Xbox 360 or Original Xbox catalog. If image quality is a deciding factor, verify whether the exact game is one of the enhanced entries.

System-link play

Xbox documentation notes that system-link play can work across supported generations when the game supports that feature. This can matter to owners preserving a local multiplayer setup, but it is conditional on both compatibility and the original game’s own networking design.

Use this decision process before buying

  1. List your non-negotiable games. Include older games you still play and new releases you specifically want. Do not begin with a console brand; begin with titles.
  2. Check PS4 games on Sony’s official support list. Mark whether each game is supported and whether Sony notes any PS5 performance benefit or controller limitation.
  3. Check Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games in Microsoft’s compatibility catalog. Pay particular attention to the word selected for Xbox 360 and Original Xbox software.
  4. Separate compatibility from exclusivity. A game can be available in an ecosystem without being permanently exclusive to Series X. Verify current platforms for any Xbox title that is central to your decision.
  5. Compare the games you will actually play. If your must-have list is dominated by Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarök, Gran Turismo 7, ASTRO BOT or Demon’s Souls, the PS5 catalog is the more relevant advantage. If your priority is preserving Xbox generations, Series X has the stronger documented reach.
  6. Recheck time-sensitive details immediately before purchase. Game catalogs, release schedules, physical inventory and compatibility listings can change.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming “backward compatible” means every older game works. Xbox 360 and Original Xbox support is selective, and PS5 support is based on Sony’s supported-PS4 list.
  • Confusing a performance benefit with a remaster. A compatible game may receive PS5 features or an Xbox enhancement, but that does not mean every older title has been rebuilt for the new console.
  • Counting announced games as available games. Sony’s PS5 page includes newer and upcoming releases. Check the current release status when a game is part of your purchase decision.
  • Calling all Xbox-published games permanent exclusives. Platform availability changes. Verify the specific game rather than applying a blanket label.
  • Ignoring controllers. Sony explicitly documents DualSense, DUALSHOCK 4 and licensed third-party gamepads for supported PS4 games. Check the individual title if a particular controller feature matters.
  • Assuming ownership and compatibility are identical. A game you own still needs to appear in the applicable compatibility listing, especially for older Xbox generations.

Who should buy each console?

Choose PS5 when Sony’s franchises are the priority

Buy the PS5 when your shortlist centers on PlayStation Studios games such as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, God of War Ragnarök, Returnal, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Gran Turismo 7, ASTRO BOT or Demon’s Souls. It is also the more straightforward choice when your older collection is primarily supported PS4 software and you are prepared to verify each important title on Sony’s list.

Choose Xbox Series X when legacy access is the priority

Choose Series X when you want one current Xbox console to cover Xbox One games and a selected library of Xbox 360 and Original Xbox titles. The free program, cross-generation scope and enhancements for selected games make it the stronger option for buyers whose decision is driven by older Xbox software rather than a single new release.

Choose based on your existing collection when the scores are close

When neither catalog contains an obvious must-have, let your owned games break the tie. A console that supports the games you already return to can save more frustration than a theoretical advantage in the other platform’s catalog. Verify the exact titles first, because compatibility is not universal on either platform.

Final verdict

PS5 wins for buyers seeking Sony’s current first-party identity and named PlayStation Studios franchises. Xbox Series X wins for backward compatibility: it supports Xbox One games and selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games, with enhancements available for selected titles. There is no universal winner for every player. Match the console to your must-play exclusives and the older games you actually own, then confirm each title in the official compatibility documentation before buying.
