No current, standardized evidence proves that either console is universally faster. The strongest directly reported head-to-head result is an older, controller-specific test in which Xbox Series X averaged 8.75 frames of latency and DualSense averaged 5.75 frames. That does not measure complete controller-to-photon response, so it cannot establish a permanent PS5 advantage. In practice, your display’s Game Mode, refresh rate, VRR behavior, game frame rate and connection setup can matter more than the console logo.

What “input latency” means on PS5 and Xbox Series X

Input latency is the time between an action—pressing a button, moving a stick or pulling a trigger—and the corresponding image change reaching your eyes. A console does not have one fixed latency value because several stages contribute to the result:

  • Controller path: The controller detects the input, processes it and sends data over a wired or wireless connection. Firmware, connection mode and polling behavior can change this part of the delay.
  • Game and engine: The game must read the input, simulate the next frame and submit rendering work. Frame rate and the game’s own engine queue affect how quickly that happens.
  • Console rendering: The PS5 or Xbox Series X renders and outputs a frame. A 120-frame-per-second mode has more frequent frame opportunities than a 60-frame-per-second mode, but the exact engine path still matters.
  • HDMI transport: The signal travels through the console’s HDMI output, any receiver or switch in the path, and the display input.
  • Display processing and scan-out: The television or monitor may add processing delay before drawing the image. The panel then scans the frame, so the measured point on the screen also affects the number.

These delays accumulate. A controller comparison can therefore show a difference that disappears—or is overwhelmed—when the same consoles are connected to a different television, run a different performance mode or play a game with a different engine pipeline.

The best direct evidence, and what it does not prove

Source and date What was measured Reported result How to interpret it
WULFF DEN comparison reported by Tom’s Hardware Italia (published 20 November 2020; updated 9 August 2022) Controller latency in that particular test Xbox Series X controller: 8.75 frames average; DualSense: 5.75 frames average Historical, controller-specific evidence that favored DualSense in that setup. It was not a complete console-to-screen measurement.
RTINGS methodology (2026) Console and display capability context Both consoles support HDMI Forum VRR and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM); compatible HDMI 2.1 displays can accept 4K signals up to 120 Hz When both systems use equivalent display features, configuration can be more important than the platform name.
RTINGS display testing (2025) Television input lag, including a 4K/120 Hz condition RTINGS describes under 10 ms at 4K/120 Hz as a good TV result. At 120 Hz, one refresh is 8.33 ms; its center-screen photodiode measurement has a 4.17 ms minimum measurement point. A display number is one part of total response and depends on resolution, refresh rate and where the screen is measured.
TechRadar test method Display input lag using a Leo Bodnar 4K HDMI Input Lag Tester Common test conditions include 4K/60 Hz and 1080p/120 Hz, with Game Mode enabled and HDMI 2.1 used when available Numbers from a display review cannot be copied as a universal PS5 or Xbox latency figure.

The controller result is useful because it is the clearest reported head-to-head figure, but its scope is narrow. The report does not establish that every DualSense is faster than every Xbox controller, nor does it control for every game, firmware version, wired or wireless mode, display, resolution or frame-rate mode. Treat it as evidence about one test path, not a final platform ranking.

Is PS5 faster than Xbox Series X for input delay?

If “faster” means the historical controller measurement above, DualSense came out ahead: 5.75 frames versus 8.75 frames for the Xbox Series X controller. If “faster” means the complete time from a button press to a visible response in a game, the available evidence does not identify a universal winner.

A modern comparison must hold the whole chain constant. The same game, game mode, frame-rate target, display, HDMI path and measurement position are required before a console difference can be isolated. Changing from a 60 Hz mode to a 120 Hz mode changes the interval at which a new frame can appear; changing the display’s processing mode can add or remove more delay than the controller difference reported in 2020.

For that reason, a player may perceive one console as more responsive in a particular title while another title, display or controller connection produces the opposite result. The correct conclusion is conditional: DualSense has the stronger historical controller result, while total system latency remains unproven as a PS5-wide advantage.

Does Xbox Dynamic Latency Input reduce lag?

Xbox Dynamic Latency Input (DLI) is described by What Hi-Fi as a feature that is “supposed to immediately synchronise each controller input with what you see on screen.” That describes the intended behavior: align controller reports with the rendered image so an input is not unnecessarily delayed in the pipeline.

It is not proof that Xbox Series X wins every latency test. What Hi-Fi also notes that television lag contributes to the result and that isolating DLI’s effect is difficult. A feature can reduce one part of the chain while the game engine, frame rate or display remains the dominant source of delay. To evaluate DLI fairly, a test would need the same controller connection, game, frame-rate mode and display, with the feature’s contribution separated from all other stages.

Why 120 Hz, VRR and ALLM matter more than the badge

120 Hz creates more frequent frame opportunities

At 120 Hz, one refresh takes 8.33 ms. That does not mean every button press appears in 8.33 ms: the controller, game simulation, rendering queue, HDMI transfer and display processing still take time. It does mean the display has twice as many refresh opportunities as a 60 Hz mode, provided the game can supply frames at the intended rate.

Use the game’s performance mode when it offers a genuine high-frame-rate option. A 120 Hz console output by itself does not force a game to render at 120 frames per second.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

VRR keeps refresh timing aligned with frame delivery

Both PS5 and Xbox Series X support HDMI Forum Variable Refresh Rate (VRR). On a compatible display, VRR lets the screen adjust its refresh timing to the console’s frame delivery, reducing the mismatch that can produce tearing or uneven presentation. VRR is a shared capability, so the display’s implementation and the game’s frame-rate behavior still determine the practical result.

ALLM can switch the display into its low-latency mode

Both consoles also support Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM). When the display honors ALLM, it can switch to its Game Mode automatically. Because television processing is a separate part of the chain, confirming that Game Mode is actually active is more important than assuming the console has enabled it.

HDMI 2.1 is a requirement for the highest common mode

Compatible HDMI 2.1 displays can accept 4K signals up to 120 Hz from either console. The port, cable path and display input must all support the selected mode. A receiver, switch or capture device that limits the link can force a lower refresh rate or prevent VRR, changing the latency and motion behavior you are trying to compare.

Why display test numbers cannot be treated as console latency

RTINGS measures television behavior with a center-screen photodiode. At 120 Hz, the screen scan means its center measurement has a 4.17 ms minimum measurement point. That is a property of the test position and scan timing, not a claim that a complete console response takes only that long.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RTINGS considers under 10 ms at 4K/120 Hz a good television input-lag result. The figure applies to the display under that test condition. A television can measure differently at 4K/60 Hz, 1080p/120 Hz or with extra picture processing enabled.

TechRadar’s use of a Leo Bodnar 4K HDMI Input Lag Tester illustrates the same limitation. Its common conditions include 4K/60 Hz and 1080p/120 Hz, with Game Mode enabled and HDMI 2.1 used when available. Those are display-input measurements. They do not include a particular controller’s wireless path, the game’s simulation queue or the console’s rendering schedule, so they cannot be copied as “PS5 latency” or “Xbox latency.”

How to perform a fair PS5-versus-Xbox latency comparison

Use a repeatable procedure rather than relying on a single subjective match. The goal is to keep every variable fixed except the console and, if relevant, its controller.

  1. Choose a game with a documented performance mode. Select a title available on both systems and record whether it is running at its 60 Hz or 120 Hz target. Do not compare a quality mode on one console with a performance mode on the other.
  2. Update both consoles and controllers. Firmware can alter controller behavior or display features. Record the software versions and test them on the same date.
  3. Use equivalent controller connections. Compare wired with wired or wireless with wireless. Keep the controller model and connection state consistent for every run, and record whether any special feature such as DLI is active.
  4. Connect directly to the display where possible. Remove an AV receiver, HDMI switch or capture device from the path for the baseline test. If you must use one, use the same device and input path for both consoles.
  5. Set the display identically. Enable Game Mode, select the same resolution and refresh rate, and apply the same VRR and ALLM settings. Confirm on-screen that the television or monitor is not using a cinema, vivid or other processing-heavy preset.
  6. Use the same HDMI input class. If the display has dedicated HDMI 2.1 inputs, use the corresponding input for each console and the same cable specification and length where practical.
  7. Disable extra image processing. Features such as motion interpolation, noise reduction and dynamic enhancement can add processing time. Keep them off for both systems rather than changing only the slower-looking setup.
  8. Measure more than one game or repeat the same game extensively. A single engine can have an unusual input queue. Repeatable results across multiple titles are stronger than one favorable run.
  9. Define the measurement point. A photodiode at the center of the screen, a high-speed camera and a controller-to-display tester do not report identical values. Keep the instrument and screen position fixed and state exactly what was measured.
  10. Report uncertainty and scope. Separate controller latency, display input lag and any end-to-end result. Do not add figures from different methods and call the sum a standardized console number.

Lowest-latency setup for either console

For everyday play, use a display with measured low input lag, a true 120 Hz mode, HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, VRR and ALLM support. RTINGS uses under 10 ms at 4K/120 Hz as a good display target. Connect the console directly to the display, choose Game Mode, enable the display’s VRR and ALLM options when compatible, and select the game’s performance mode if responsiveness is the priority.

After changing settings, verify the actual signal reported by the display. A console menu set to 120 Hz is not enough if the television falls back to 60 Hz because of an input, cable or intermediary device. Likewise, a display may advertise ALLM while a manual picture preset prevents the low-latency mode from engaging.

Connection checklist

  • Console connected directly to the display for the baseline.
  • HDMI 2.1 input selected when using 4K at 120 Hz.
  • Game Mode enabled and confirmed on the display.
  • VRR enabled on both the console and display when supported by the game and panel.
  • ALLM enabled, with the display allowed to switch presets automatically.
  • Motion smoothing and other unnecessary picture processing disabled.
  • Identical controller connection type used when comparing consoles.

Troubleshooting perceived lag

The picture feels delayed on both consoles

Check the television first. Confirm Game Mode, verify that the selected input is not passing through a receiver or switch, and check the reported refresh rate. A display operating at 60 Hz when you expected 120 Hz changes the timing opportunity before any console-specific difference is considered.

Only one console feels slow

Compare the two HDMI inputs and picture presets. Some displays apply different processing or feature support by input. Recheck that both consoles use the same resolution, refresh rate, VRR state and game mode. Then test the same controller connection type; comparing a wireless controller on one system with a wired controller on the other invalidates the comparison.

Controls feel inconsistent rather than constantly delayed

Look for frame-rate variation or VRR behavior in the game. A title that misses its frame-rate target can feel uneven even when the display’s measured input lag is low. Repeat the test in a stable performance mode and record whether VRR is active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

120 Hz or VRR will not activate

Use the display’s HDMI 2.1 input, connect the console directly, and remove any intermediary device that may limit bandwidth. Check the cable and the console’s video-output settings, then confirm the display’s information panel reports the intended resolution and refresh rate.

A controller test disagrees with what you feel on screen

That is expected when the test measures only the controller path. The 2020 WULFF DEN result reported by Tom’s Hardware Italia did not include every game, firmware, display and frame-rate condition. End-to-end perception is shaped by the entire chain, so a controller advantage does not guarantee a visible advantage in every setup.

Which console should latency-sensitive players choose?

Choose PS5 when the DualSense result and features matter to you

The historical direct comparison favors DualSense at 5.75 frames versus 8.75 frames for the Xbox Series X controller. That is a legitimate reason to prefer the PS5 if your priority is the controller path and you understand the result’s limited scope. It is not evidence that every PS5 game will display inputs sooner than its Xbox counterpart.

Choose Xbox Series X when your setup already supports its low-latency path

Xbox Series X offers DLI, and both consoles share VRR, ALLM and 4K/120 Hz capability with a compatible HDMI 2.1 display. If your television is the bottleneck, changing from one console to the other may produce less improvement than enabling Game Mode, removing an HDMI intermediary or moving to a genuinely low-latency 120 Hz display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose based on the games and display you will actually use

For competitive play, compare the specific title’s performance mode and measured behavior on your display. A repeatable result in the game you play is more useful than a broad claim about PS5 or Xbox Series X. Keep the display and settings fixed, and treat controller-only figures as one diagnostic component rather than the final verdict.

What a definitive console latency comparison would require

A convincing modern ranking would publish end-to-end measurements for both consoles across more than one game, with the same display, HDMI path, resolution, refresh rate, VRR state, controller connection and measurement instrument. It would identify firmware versions, distinguish wired from wireless operation, report the game engine’s frame-rate mode and explain where on the screen each measurement was taken.

Until a study controls those variables, the responsible answer remains conditional. The available direct controller evidence favors DualSense in one older test, while the complete PS5-versus-Xbox Series X latency question has no standardized universal winner.
