Xbox Series X has the broader backward-compatibility system. It runs Xbox One games and a selected catalog of Xbox 360 and Original Xbox titles, so it reaches two older generations as well as the immediately preceding one. Support for those older Xbox games is selective, not universal.
PS5 is the better continuity choice for a PS4 library. Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games work on PS5. If your collection is on physical discs, you need a PS5 model with a disc drive; PS4 discs cannot be used on the PS5 Digital Edition. Neither platform should be treated as a universal machine for every game from every earlier generation.
Compatibility at a glance
| Decision point | PS5 | Xbox Series X |
|---|---|---|
| Previous-generation coverage | Sony describes the playable catalog as the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games. | Xbox One games, plus selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox titles. |
| Older than the immediately previous generation | No comparable native PS1, PS2 or PS3 disc compatibility is documented in Sony’s cited support material. | Selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games are supported. |
| Physical discs | PS4 discs require a PS5 with a disc drive. They do not work on PS5 Digital Edition. | A disc works only when its game is in the supported backward-compatibility catalog and the console has the required disc hardware. |
| Digital ownership and upgrades | PS4 digital purchases appear in your PS5 library after you sign in; eligible games may offer a PS5 upgrade. | For supported games that implement it, Smart Delivery supplies the appropriate version for the Xbox console you are using. |
| Performance features | Selected PS4 games can use PS5 Game Boost to raise or smooth frame rates. | The compatibility program can preserve system-link play across generations when the individual game supports that feature. |
| Main limitation | A small PS4-only exception list remains, and Sony warns that some games can lose functions or display errors. | The Xbox 360 and Original Xbox catalog is curated; owning a disc does not guarantee that its game is supported. |
What backward compatibility actually covers
Backward compatibility is not a promise that a new console reads every older disc. It is a combination of software emulation, updated game packages, licensing, and hardware support. A console maker must decide which games can run reliably, secure the rights to distribute them, and sometimes publish a new version of the game. That is why two games released for the same old console can have different results on a new one.

- Generation: Is the game from the immediately preceding console generation, or from an older one?
- Edition: Are you checking a physical disc, a digital purchase, a remaster, or a bundle? The answer can differ by edition.
- Ownership: Does your account own the digital license, or must the console verify an inserted disc?
- Features: Even when a game launches, can it retain its online modes, downloadable content, saved data, or frame-rate behavior? The supplied platform statements establish that functions can be lost, but they do not guarantee every feature for every title.
For that reason, “compatible” should mean “listed by the platform holder for this console and edition,” not merely “the disc fits in the drive” or “the game was made by the same publisher.”
How PS5 handles PS4 games
Coverage is concentrated on one generation
Sony’s official support wording is unusually broad for PS4: “The PlayStation®5 console is backward compatible with the overwhelming majority of PlayStation®4 games.” Sony also describes that library as more than 4,000 games. This makes PS5 a strong replacement for a PS4, particularly when most of the games you want are from that generation.
The wording matters. “Overwhelming majority” is not the same as every title. Sony maintains a list of PS4-only exceptions, and its support guidance warns that some playable games can have missing functions or display unexpected errors on PS5. Check the individual game rather than assuming that a title’s age or publisher guarantees a perfect match.
Physical PS4 discs require the right PS5 model
A PS4 disc is a license check as well as game media. To use one, the PS5 must have a disc drive. The PS5 Digital Edition has no drive and therefore cannot accept or verify a PS4 disc. This is the most important hardware distinction for anyone moving an existing physical collection to PS5.
When choosing between PS5 models, inventory your collection first. A person with only digital purchases can evaluate compatibility through the account library. Someone with shelves of PS4 discs needs the disc-drive model even if the intended games are otherwise compatible.
Digital PS4 purchases and upgrades
After signing in to the account that owns a PS4 digital game, compatible purchases appear in the PS5 game library. Some eligible titles offer a PS5 upgrade, but eligibility and the terms of that upgrade belong to the individual game. Do not infer that every PS4 purchase automatically becomes a native PS5 edition or that every upgrade is provided under the same terms.

The practical advantage is continuity: you can identify your existing digital games from the library rather than rebuilding the collection from scratch. The practical limitation is that a game may launch as its PS4 version, may have an optional PS5 version, or may be excluded altogether. The store or the game’s listing is the authority for that particular title.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat PS5 does not establish for older PlayStation generations
The cited Sony support material does not document comparable native support for PlayStation, PlayStation 2, or PlayStation 3 discs. That is different from saying that no older game can ever be sold or streamed on a PlayStation service; it means you should not expect a PS1, PS2, or PS3 disc to work simply because it is inserted into a PS5. Older-generation availability must be checked as a separate product or service, not assumed from PS4 compatibility.
Game Boost can improve selected PS4 titles
PS5 Game Boost gives selected PS4 games higher or steadier frame rates. It is a performance benefit layered onto compatibility, not a guarantee that every game receives a graphics upgrade. A title can be playable without receiving a Game Boost improvement, and a boosted frame rate does not remove any game-specific feature limitation Sony lists.
How Xbox Series X handles older Xbox games
Three generations, but a curated catalog
Xbox Series X supports Xbox One games and reaches back to selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox titles. That gives it more generation breadth than PS5’s documented PS4-focused approach. The word “selected” is essential: Microsoft’s compatibility program covers an official catalog, not every Xbox 360 or Original Xbox release.
An Xbox 360 or Original Xbox disc can therefore fail for a legitimate reason even when the disc is in good condition. If its title is not in the supported catalog, the console is not promising to run it. The same check applies to digital purchases. Compatibility is attached to the particular game, not to the console family in the abstract.

Disc and digital ownership
For a physical game, Series X must have the appropriate disc hardware and the title must be supported. For a digital game, the signed-in account must have the applicable ownership rights, and the title must still be part of the supported catalog. A disc from one generation and a digital license for another edition are not interchangeable assumptions.

This makes the Xbox catalog especially useful for people who kept older games but requires a title-by-title check before buying a console for a specific collection. A supported Xbox 360 game can be a strong reason to choose Series X; an unsupported favorite is a reason to keep the original hardware or seek a separately released version.
Smart Delivery reduces version hunting
For games that implement it, Smart Delivery is designed to provide the appropriate or best Xbox version for the console being used. Xbox described the goal this way: Smart Delivery “will ensure that you always play the best version of the games you own for your console, across generations.”
Smart Delivery is not a universal conversion layer. It applies to supported games that use the system, so a game without Smart Delivery can still have separate Xbox One and Series X|S editions or different upgrade rules. Look for the game’s own listing and terms rather than assuming that every cross-generation purchase behaves identically.

Xbox’s compatibility program supports system-link play across generations when the individual game supports that feature. This is valuable for a household or group that wants compatible consoles to connect locally, but it is conditional on the game. It does not mean that every old multiplayer mode, server, or downloadable component remains available.
Which console fits your library?
You mainly own PS4 games
PS5 is the straightforward continuity choice when your collection is predominantly PS4. Its documented hit rate is very high, digital purchases can appear in the PS5 library after you sign in, and selected games can benefit from Game Boost. If your collection is physical, select the disc-drive PS5; a Digital Edition cannot read those discs.
You mainly own Xbox 360 or Original Xbox games
Series X has the stronger starting position because it is the platform in this comparison with an official path for selected games from both of those older generations. Before buying, search the compatibility catalog for the exact titles you care about. The result may differ between a disc, a digital license, and a remastered edition.

You have a mixed physical collection
Count discs by platform and generation, then separate supported titles from uncertain ones. A PS4 disc collection points toward a disc-drive PS5, while Xbox 360 and Original Xbox discs require catalog verification on Series X. If both platforms are represented, the console that preserves the larger number of games you actually own is more useful than the one with the broader theoretical range.
You buy mostly digital games
Digital ownership removes the disc-drive question but not the compatibility question. On PS5, review the games listed under the owning account and check whether each title is a PS4 version, an eligible PS5 upgrade, or an exception. On Series X, confirm that an older Xbox title is in the supported catalog and whether Smart Delivery applies.
You want the widest historical reach
Choose Series X if reaching beyond the immediately previous generation is your priority. Its advantage is structural: Xbox One, selected Xbox 360, and selected Original Xbox support. Accept that the older-generation catalog is selective. Choose PS5 instead when “historical reach” really means preserving a large PS4 library, because that is where Sony’s documented compatibility effort is concentrated.
Physical discs, digital libraries and upgrades: the details that change the answer
Compatibility decisions often go wrong because a buyer considers only the game title and not the ownership format.
| Your situation | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 disc owner | Use a PS5 model with a disc drive, then confirm the game is not on Sony’s exception list. | The PS5 Digital Edition cannot read the disc, and a small number of PS4 games are excluded or have problems. |
| PS4 digital owner | Sign in to the purchasing account and check the game library and any upgrade offer. | Compatible purchases can appear on PS5, but upgrade eligibility varies by title. |
| Xbox 360 or Original Xbox disc owner | Search the official Xbox supported-title catalog for the exact game. | Only selected older titles are supported; a functioning disc is not enough. |
| Xbox digital owner | Confirm account ownership, catalog support and whether Smart Delivery is implemented. | Version selection and upgrade behavior depend on the game. |
Do not treat a remaster or remake as proof that the original disc is compatible. A separately published modern version may have different ownership, saves, features and pricing from the old release.

How to check a game before you buy a console
- Make a title list. Write down the exact games you care about, including whether each is a disc, a digital purchase, a bundle, or a special edition.
- Classify the generation. Mark each game as PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Original Xbox, or another generation. This immediately shows whether you are asking PS5 to preserve a PS4 library or Series X to reach into older Xbox catalogs.
- Use the platform holder’s compatibility listing. Search Sony’s PS4-on-PS5 information for PlayStation games and Xbox’s backward-compatibility catalog for Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games. Use the exact title and edition; similar names can refer to different releases.
- Check the hardware path. For a PS4 disc, verify that the PS5 has a disc drive. For an Xbox disc, verify that you are using the disc-capable Series X hardware and that the title is listed as supported.
- Check version and upgrade notes. Confirm whether the game launches as its previous-generation version, has an eligible PS5 upgrade, uses Smart Delivery, or requires a separate purchase.
- Check feature warnings. Read notes about missing functions, errors, online services or other limitations. Compatibility is useful only if the features you need are present.
- Repeat the check shortly before purchase. Catalogs and platform policies can change. A current listing is more reliable than an old forum post, package claim or memory of how the game worked on an earlier console.
Common problems and what they mean
A PS4 disc will not work on PS5
First identify the PS5 model. If it is the Digital Edition, the missing disc drive is the explanation, not a damaged game. If the console has a drive, check whether the title is one of Sony’s PS4-only exceptions and read any warning about functions or errors. A disc that is not on the supported path cannot be made compatible by reinstalling it.
Best Value
A PS4 game launches but a feature is missing
Sony explicitly warns that some games can lose functions on PS5. Compare the game’s current support notes with the feature you need instead of assuming that a successful launch equals complete parity. If a native PS5 upgrade is offered, check its terms; an upgrade may provide a different software package, but it is still governed by that game’s listing.
An Xbox 360 disc is rejected by Series X
Verify the title in Xbox’s selected backward-compatibility catalog. If it is absent, the disc is outside the supported program even if the console reads other Xbox 360 discs. If it is listed, check that you are using the correct disc-capable hardware and the same edition named in the listing.
The Xbox version did not update automatically
Smart Delivery works only for games that implement it. A title without Smart Delivery can require a separate version, a manual upgrade path, or continued use of its Xbox One edition. Read the game’s store information for its version policy rather than treating the missing update as a console fault.
A game runs but performance is unchanged
PS5 Game Boost applies to selected PS4 games, not the entire catalog. Xbox compatibility likewise does not promise a uniform frame-rate or resolution improvement for every older title. Compatibility and enhancement are separate claims; check the game-specific notes for each.
The practical verdict
Pick Xbox Series X when your definition of compatibility includes older generations. It is the only one of these consoles with documented support for selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games in addition to the previous generation, and Smart Delivery can simplify version selection for participating titles.
Pick PS5 with a disc drive when your priority is carrying a substantial PS4 disc collection forward. Pick the digital model only when you do not need physical PS4 media. PS5’s very high PS4 compatibility rate makes it a strong successor to PS4, but its documented support does not extend in the same way to PS1, PS2 or PS3 discs.
The best choice is therefore determined by the games you actually own: list them, verify each title in the current official catalog, and give extra weight to disc format and generation. Breadth favors Series X; PS4 continuity favors PS5.
