On paper, Xbox Series X has the higher GPU specification: Microsoft lists 12 TFLOPS, compared with Sony’s original PS5 figure of up to 10.3 TFLOPS. That is a hardware-spec comparison—not proof that Xbox runs every game faster or looks better. In practice, performance depends on the game, its patch, graphics mode, and scene. To choose a winner, compare the same game under the same conditions and consider frame-rate consistency, image quality, ray tracing, and loading.

What the official specifications tell you

Microsoft and Sony published these specifications in 2020 for Xbox Series X and the original PS5. They describe hardware and supported features, not independent game benchmarks.

Specification Xbox Series X Original PS5
GPU Custom RDNA 2 GPU, 12 TFLOPS RDNA 2-based GPU, variable frequency up to 2.23 GHz and up to 10.3 TFLOPS
CPU Custom 8-core Zen 2 8-core/16-thread Zen 2
Memory 16 GB GDDR6 16 GB GDDR6
Internal storage 1 TB NVMe SSD 825 GB SSD
Published display/performance statement 4K at 60 FPS performance target; support up to 120 FPS Support for 4K 120 Hz TVs, 8K TVs, and HDMI 2.1 VRR

Why the TFLOPS gap does not settle the comparison

TFLOPS describes a GPU’s theoretical raw mathematical throughput. Microsoft’s glossary defines the term as a measure of raw GPU performance, but a higher figure alone does not predict a specific game’s frame rate or image quality. Game engines, render settings, system architecture, and platform-specific optimization all affect the result.

4K and 120 FPS are capabilities, not guarantees

The Xbox specification’s 4K-at-60-FPS target and support up to 120 FPS do not mean every game renders at 4K or reaches 120 FPS. Sony’s support for 4K 120 Hz TVs likewise describes a console capability, not a promise that every title offers a 120-FPS mode. The game must provide the mode, and the TV or monitor and connection must support the required refresh rate and features.

How to compare performance in a particular game

Compare the same title, patch, graphics mode, and gameplay scene. A performance mode on one console is not a fair match for a quality mode on the other; if the modes differ, make that difference explicit rather than treating the results as directly equivalent.

  1. Record the versions and settings. Note each console, game patch, graphics mode, and test scene. Include any platform-specific options.
  2. Check frame rate and consistency. Look beyond the target number: note dips, uneven frame pacing, and responsiveness during play.
  3. Assess resolution and image quality. Establish whether output is native, dynamic, or reconstructed when that information is available. Compare the image in motion as well as in still scenes.
  4. Compare ray tracing and visual settings. Identify which effects are actually enabled, then account for any resolution or frame-rate trade-offs.
  5. Compare loading in the same scenario. Use the same game and transition; SSD specifications by themselves do not establish which console loads a particular title faster.
  6. Confirm display support. Check that the screen supports the refresh rate and features required by the selected game mode.

One example of why patch context matters is Digital Foundry’s February 2023 analysis of a particular game across PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. It discusses visual settings, ray tracing, and performance, and notes that changes to the game code required repeated analysis. It illustrates why results need version and mode context; it is not a current, universal verdict across games.

Ray tracing and loading depend on the game

Both consoles support hardware-accelerated ray tracing, but that does not make the visual result or performance cost identical across titles. Sony says developers can use the PS5’s ray-tracing hardware in different ways in its PS5 FAQ. The useful comparison is which effects a specific game implements and what each mode trades for them—not whether a console supports ray tracing in the abstract.

Likewise, the consoles’ SSD specifications do not establish a platform-wide loading winner. Loading depends on the game and the transition being measured. Compare the same title and scenario rather than inferring game performance from capacity or drive labels.

Which console should you choose?

There is no evidence here for a universal performance winner across current games. Use game-specific comparisons where available, and weigh the results alongside the games and platform you prefer.

  • Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
  • PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
  • Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
  • 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
  • Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
  • Choose based on your library first. A console’s theoretical GPU advantage matters less than the games you want to play and how those games perform in their available modes.
  • Use comparable testing for performance claims. Look for the same title and patch, matched modes, and results that distinguish targets from observed stability.
  • Match your display to the mode you want. A 120 Hz screen can support high-refresh-rate play only when the console, connection, and game mode also support it; it cannot make a game run at 120 FPS by itself.

The cited official storage figures list an M.2 SSD expansion connector for the original PS5 and Storage Expansion Cards for Xbox Series X. Check current compatibility and requirements before selecting an expansion product.
