There is no evidence that a PS5 is generally cheaper to repair than an Xbox Series X, or vice versa. Your lowest-cost route depends first on warranty eligibility, then on the exact fault, console revision, parts compatibility, diagnosis, labor, shipping, and any repair warranty. Check the manufacturer service route before buying a part or authorizing independent work. Sony’s US warranty can provide a no-charge repair or factory-recertified replacement for qualifying material defects, including return shipping. Microsoft directs Xbox owners to self-repair only when the device, part, skills, and tools are all appropriate; otherwise it recommends authorized service or an out-of-warranty order.
The short answer: check warranty before comparing repair prices
A price for a replacement HDMI port, fan, or power supply is not the price of a completed console repair. A real bill can include diagnosis, labor, the part, shipping, taxes, data handling, and a component or console exchange. The published figures available for this comparison are limited: one independent provider lists an Xbox Series X HDMI repair at $169 in 2026 and attributes a $189.99 comparison price to another provider. Those are Xbox-specific examples, not PS5 prices, national averages, or proof that either console is cheaper to repair.
Use this order:
- Confirm the console’s country, model, revision, serial number, purchase date, and symptom.
- Check the applicable manufacturer warranty and service route.
- If it is out of warranty, obtain a written, fault-specific quote that separates diagnosis, parts, labor, shipping, and any exchange.
- Choose DIY only when the documented repair is supported for your model and you have the required tools and skills.
- Compare the complete repair total and repair warranty with the cost and risk of replacement, rather than comparing a part price with a new console.
What a “repair cost” actually includes
Before comparing PS5 and Xbox Series X numbers, separate the terms used in a quote. They describe different financial commitments.

|---|---|---|
| Diagnosis or inspection | Testing to identify the failed board, port, drive, power circuit, cooling component, or another cause. | The independent Xbox guide says several faults require diagnosis before it gives a quote. Whether the fee is charged or credited is provider-specific and must be asked in writing. |
| Replacement part | The physical component, such as an HDMI port, fan, or power supply. | iFixit’s Xbox Series X parts catalog lists components. The cited material does not establish the current dollar amounts, and a listing is not a labor-inclusive repair bill. |
| Labor | Disassembly, board or component work, reassembly, testing, and cleanup. | Labor is not included in the iFixit parts listings. Shop labor varies by fault, model, and provider. |
| Shipping and handling | Sending the console or part to a facility and returning it. | Sony’s qualifying in-warranty US remedy includes return shipping to and from an authorized facility. Out-of-warranty and independent-shop shipping terms are not standardized. |
| Exchange or replacement | A factory-recertified or other replacement console instead of repairing your original unit. | Sony’s warranty allows Sony to repair or replace with a factory-recertified product at its option for qualifying defects. A shop’s exchange policy must be quoted separately. |
| Repair warranty | Coverage if the same work fails during the provider’s stated period. | No universal term is established by the cited sources. Ask for the period, exclusions, and whether it covers parts, labor, or both. |
A quote that says “HDMI repair: $169” may be a complete service price at that provider, while a $30-looking part on a parts site may still require soldering, disassembly, testing, and shipping. Ask which of these elements are included before treating two figures as comparable.

Warranty and official service routes
Sony PS5 warranty in the United States
Read Sony’s US PlayStation 5 warranty before paying an independent shop. For qualifying material defects during the applicable warranty coverage, Sony says it may repair the product or replace it with a factory-recertified product, at Sony’s option, at no charge. The remedy includes return shipping to and from an authorized facility. The cited warranty page does not establish a universal out-of-warranty PS5 price, so do not assume that an in-warranty remedy or its shipping terms apply after coverage ends.
Have your proof of purchase, serial information, region, and a precise description of the failure ready. Do not open the console or remove a component until you understand how that could affect eligibility under the warranty terms. If Sony directs you to an authorized route, compare that official option with an independent quote only after you know whether the official route is free, paid, or an exchange.
Microsoft Xbox Series X guidance
Microsoft’s Xbox Series X Digital Console Safety & Repair Instructions does not publish a universal out-of-warranty repair price. Instead, it asks owners to evaluate whether the device supports self-repair, whether the chosen part addresses the fault, and whether they have the necessary skills and tools. If those checks fail, Microsoft says: “If the answer is no to any of the above questions, we suggest taking the device into an authorized service provider or setting up an out-of-warranty repair order.”

A Series X designation alone is not enough when a component or procedure is revision-specific. If Microsoft’s readiness checks do not fit your situation, an authorized provider or Microsoft’s out-of-warranty process is the safer route than improvising board work.
Published prices: what can and cannot be compared
The following figures are the complete price evidence available for this topic. They should not be expanded into a national average or a PS5-versus-Xbox ranking.

| Provider or source | Console and work | Published amount | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| iFixForU, 2026 | Xbox Series X HDMI-port repair | $169 | The provider’s stated price for its own service. It is one provider’s example, not a national average and not a PS5 price. |
| uBreakiFix, as attributed by iFixForU, 2026 | Xbox Series X HDMI repair | $189.99 | iFixForU cites this comparison figure; the listing was not independently verified in the cited material. Treat it as an attributed comparison, not a confirmed universal rate. |
| iFixit parts catalog | Xbox Series X components, including HDMI port, fan, and power supply | Not stated in the cited material | Live parts listings are component prices only. They do not guarantee diagnosis, labor, shipping, taxes, or a completed repair bill. |
| Sony US warranty | Qualifying in-warranty PS5 material defect | No charge under the stated warranty remedy | Sony may repair or provide a factory-recertified replacement and includes return shipping to and from an authorized facility. The page does not set an out-of-warranty price. |
| Microsoft Xbox repair guide | Out-of-warranty Xbox service | Not stated | The guide explains readiness checks and service routes, not a universal dollar amount. |
Because there is no matching, current, location-specific PS5 shop quote in the cited material, the honest comparison is a method rather than a winner. Obtain quotes for the same fault, the same revision, and the same service scope before deciding.
When an independent repair shop makes sense
A reputable shop is usually the sensible option when the fault is uncertain, the console is out of warranty, you lack the documented tools, or the work involves soldering or board-level diagnosis. HDMI-port work is a clear example: iFixit’s Xbox Series X HDMI-port kit requires basic soldering skills, a soldering iron, and basic soldering tools. That is not a plug-in repair for a beginner.
Recommended Free Tools
Microsoft’s own guidance supports using an authorized provider or an out-of-warranty order when any self-repair readiness answer is “no.” An independent shop can still be appropriate, but you should compare its diagnostic method, parts source, workmanship warranty, data handling, and shipping terms rather than choosing solely on the headline labor figure.
Questions to ask before authorizing work
- What exact fault did you diagnose, and what tests support that diagnosis?
- Is there a diagnostic fee? If so, is it credited toward the repair, refunded if I decline, or retained?
- Is the quoted amount a complete total or only labor or the replacement part?
- Which part will be installed, and is it new, used, refurbished, or board-repaired?
- How was compatibility confirmed for my model, revision, and serial range?
- Will you repair the component, replace the board, exchange the console, or substitute another unit?
- Does the quote include tax, shipping, return shipping, testing, and reassembly?
- What repair warranty applies, for how long, and what does it exclude?
- What is the expected turnaround, and what happens if the diagnosis changes after disassembly?
- How will my storage, account information, and personal data be handled?
Request the answers and the total in writing. If a provider cannot distinguish a part price from labor and diagnosis, you do not yet have a meaningful comparison.
DIY: decide whether the repair is within your capability
Use the documented readiness test
For Xbox, Microsoft’s instructions provide the relevant decision framework: confirm that your device supports self-repair, verify that the part addresses the actual fault, and confirm that you have the skills and tools. A “no” to any one of those questions points toward authorized service or an out-of-warranty order.

Microsoft lists a T8 driver among standard tools for the documented Series X work. That does not mean a T8 driver is the only tool needed for every repair. HDMI-port replacement adds soldering equipment and technique, as the iFixit kit warning makes clear. Board-level faults may require diagnostic instruments and experience not described by a basic toolkit.

HDMI-port replacement is a soldering job
An HDMI symptom does not by itself prove that the port is the failed component. A shop should diagnose the console before replacing it. If the port is confirmed damaged and you are considering the iFixit kit, place its requirement next to the purchase decision: basic soldering skills, a soldering iron, and basic soldering tools are required. A first-time attempt can damage pads or nearby board components, turning a localized repair into a more expensive board problem.
The same caution applies to a PS5. The cited iFixit PlayStation 5 repair-help page provides model-specific repair information, but it does not establish a universal PS5 HDMI labor price. Do not transfer the Xbox $169 or $189.99 examples to a PS5.
Confirm the exact model before ordering a part
Compatibility is a purchasing requirement, not a detail to check after delivery.
- Record the model number and serial number from the console and its documentation.
- Identify whether a PS5 is a digital edition or a disc edition. Their disc-drive hardware differs, so a part or procedure for one configuration may not apply to the other.
- For an Xbox, use Microsoft’s cited model and serial information for the supported digital-console revision.
- Check the part listing’s compatible variants. The iFixit Xbox HDMI-port page identifies compatible 2020 variants; match that information to your console before buying.
- Keep the original part until the repair is complete in case the diagnosis or compatibility check changes.
Never infer compatibility from the console family name alone. A physically similar component can still have different connectors, mounting, firmware, or board requirements.

A practical workflow from failure to finished repair
Step 1: document the symptom
Write down exactly what happens: no power, intermittent video, a damaged connector, overheating behavior, fan noise, disc handling, or a failure that appears only after a specific action. Note whether the console displays an error, whether another cable or display changes the result, and whether the problem is repeatable. This record helps a warranty provider or shop avoid charging you to rediscover basic facts.
Step 2: preserve warranty and service options
Before opening the console, check Sony’s US warranty terms or Microsoft’s service route for your region and model. Keep proof of purchase and serial information. If the manufacturer offers a qualifying no-charge remedy, compare that with any paid option before removing parts.
Step 3: obtain a diagnosis when the cause is uncertain
Do not order a port, fan, or power supply solely because its symptom sounds familiar. Ask a shop for the diagnostic fee, the test performed, and the conditions under which the fee is applied. For a manufacturer route, follow the official troubleshooting and service-order instructions linked from the applicable support material.
Step 4: compare complete written totals
Put the manufacturer quote, authorized-service quote, independent-shop quote, and DIY bill of materials in separate columns. Include diagnosis, labor, parts, shipping both ways, tax, repair warranty, turnaround, and the consequences if the repair fails or the diagnosis changes. A DIY total should also include required tools and the value of a replacement board or console if the attempt goes wrong.
Step 5: verify the delivered result
Before accepting a repaired console, test the original symptom and the functions that the repair could affect. For video work, test stable output through the relevant port and cable; for power or cooling work, verify reliable startup and sustained operation. Keep the invoice, installed-part information, and warranty terms.

Repair or replace? Use a fault-specific decision
“Should I repair it or replace it?” cannot be answered responsibly from the console name alone. Use the written quote and these decision points:
- Warranty outcome: a qualifying Sony US warranty claim may remove the repair bill, while an out-of-warranty case does not receive a price from the cited warranty page.
- Diagnostic certainty: a confirmed, localized fault is easier to price than an intermittent or board-level failure.
- Total cost: compare the complete repair bill, not a component listing, with the current cost of obtaining a working replacement in your location.
- Data and account considerations: ask whether a console exchange changes what happens to local data, settings, or accessories.
- Repair warranty: a written warranty can make a higher quote preferable to a cheaper repair with no recourse.
- Turnaround: shipping and waiting time may matter if the console is used for work, accessibility, or a time-sensitive event.
- Risk: DIY soldering or an uncertain diagnosis can increase the eventual bill if the first repair damages the board or fails to address the cause.
The available evidence supports comparing these factors, not declaring Xbox or PS5 the cheaper platform to repair. Prices vary by provider, location, revision, and fault, and the cited sources do not provide a standardized US market matrix.
How to read the available Xbox examples without misusing them
The $169 iFixForU figure is a stated price for that provider’s Xbox Series X HDMI-port service in 2026. The same guide attributes a $189.99 HDMI comparison price to uBreakiFix, but that listing was not independently verified in the cited material. Neither number establishes what a PS5 HDMI repair costs, what every Xbox shop charges, or what a different Xbox fault will cost.

Similarly, an iFixit component page is useful when you are pricing a potential DIY part, but it is not a quote for diagnosis, labor, shipping, or a completed repair. Treat the catalog as a parts source and compatibility reference, then build a separate budget for tools and your own risk. If you prefer a shop, ask for a service quote rather than adding a catalog part price to an assumed labor number.
Common mistakes that turn a small repair into an expensive one
- Skipping the warranty check: paying a shop before confirming a possible no-charge manufacturer remedy.
- Comparing unlike numbers: placing an Xbox HDMI service price beside a PS5 replacement-part price.
- Buying before diagnosis: replacing a port when the actual fault is elsewhere on the board or in the signal path.
- Ignoring configuration: ordering a disc-drive-related part for a digital PS5, or using a part outside the supported Xbox variant.
- Underestimating soldering: treating HDMI-port replacement as a snap-in module despite the required soldering iron and skills.
- Accepting a verbal total: discovering later that diagnosis, shipping, tax, or testing was extra.
- Forgetting the repair warranty: choosing the lowest headline price without knowing whether repeat failure is covered.
- Assuming an exchange is equivalent to a repair: failing to ask whether the original console, storage, or data will be returned.
What is established—and what is not
Established evidence supports a no-charge Sony US warranty remedy for qualifying in-warranty material defects, Microsoft’s readiness checks and service recommendation for Xbox self-repair, the soldering requirement for the cited Xbox HDMI kit, the Xbox-specific $169 and attributed $189.99 examples, and the existence of Xbox parts listings. It does not establish a universal current out-of-warranty price for either console, a typical national labor rate, or a reliable PS5-versus-Xbox cost ranking by country and revision.
For a decision you can defend, get a location-specific quote for your exact fault and model, preserve any manufacturer warranty option, and compare the complete service terms. That process is more reliable than choosing a console brand from isolated part prices or a single shop’s advertised HDMI figure.
