For GTA Online, PS5 and Xbox Series X are effectively tied. Both run the native current-generation edition of Grand Theft Auto V with the same major upgrades: selectable graphics modes, output up to 4K resolution, up to 60 frames per second, HDR, ray tracing, improved textures, faster loading and the current content catalog. The practical choice is therefore your friends’ console family, your preferred controller and audio setup, and the online-membership ecosystem you already use.
There are two important exceptions. PlayStation and Xbox players cannot currently join one another in GTA Online, so buying the other platform can separate you from your existing crew. Also, Red Dead Online has no native PS5 or Xbox Series X release; it is the PS4 or Xbox One version running through backward compatibility.
PS5 and Xbox Series X at a glance
The consoles deliver near-identical GTA Online gameplay because Rockstar released one current-generation edition for each platform rather than giving either system an exclusive feature set. The differences that matter most are outside the game engine.

What version of GTA Online runs on each console?
PS5: the native current-generation edition
The PlayStation Store listing identifies the PS5 release as Grand Theft Auto V PS5. It contains the current-generation GTA Online client rather than merely running the PS4 game under compatibility. Rockstar’s 2022 description lists three detailed graphics modes, with combinations built around fidelity, performance and ray tracing. The stated capabilities are “up to 4K resolution,” “up to 60 frames per second,” HDR options, ray tracing and improved texture quality. “Up to” is important: the selected mode, display, scene and system output settings determine the actual resolution and frame rate at a given moment.
Xbox Series X: the native current-generation edition
Xbox Series X runs the corresponding current-generation Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online release. It receives the same major graphics options, current content and technical targets as the PS5 edition. The Xbox store describes GTA Online sessions for up to 30 players. Player count can depend on the activity and session type, so the listing is a maximum capability rather than a promise that every event will contain 30 people.
Current content and GTA+
At the current-generation launch, Take-Two described GTA Online as having more than 40 unique updates accumulated over more than eight years. Both console families receive the same current-generation service direction and ongoing online content. GTA+ is offered on both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S; membership availability and benefits can change, so check the in-console store for your region before subscribing. It is not a platform-exclusive advantage.

Performance: are PS5 and Series X different in GTA Online?
On paper, the answer is no meaningful difference. Rockstar lists the same headline features on both systems:
- Output up to 4K resolution.
- Modes targeting up to 60 frames per second.
- HDR support.
- Ray-traced effects in the appropriate graphics mode.
- Improved texture quality and other presentation upgrades.
- Faster loading than the previous-generation releases.
These are targets, not a guarantee that every frame is rendered at native 4K or that 60 fps is locked in every situation. A 4K television, HDR configuration and a mode that prioritizes performance are needed to see the relevant benefits. If your display is 1080p, the consoles can still provide the current-generation game and smoother modes, but you will not see all of the panel-level resolution and HDR improvements.
Choosing a graphics mode
Use the in-game display settings to choose the balance you prefer. A fidelity-oriented mode is appropriate when image detail and ray-traced effects matter most. A performance-oriented mode is preferable for driving, shooting and competitive activities where motion clarity matters. A mode that combines higher frame-rate behavior with selected ray tracing may be available depending on the release settings. Rockstar’s wording confirms three modes, but the exact labels and behavior can change with updates; read the descriptions shown on your console rather than assuming a mode name means a fixed resolution.
Loading times and audio
Both systems use their solid-state storage to reduce the long waits associated with PS4 and Xbox One. Loading is still affected by network handshakes, cloud-service status and the activity you enter, so a fast console does not eliminate every pause.

Rockstar specifies Tempest 3D positional audio on PS5 and Spatial Sound on Xbox Series X|S. The result depends on your headphones, soundbar or receiver and how that device is configured. Neither system has an exclusive GTA Online mission or soundscape; the distinction is the platform’s audio pipeline.
Can PS5 and Xbox Series X play GTA Online together?
No. PlayStation-to-Xbox crossplay is not supported for GTA Online according to current specialist reporting. A PS5 player cannot join a friend’s Xbox Series X session, and an Xbox player cannot invite a PS5 player into the same GTA Online session. The two current-generation versions are parallel ecosystems even though their content and technical upgrades are closely matched.

What this means when you choose a console
- Ask your regular crew which family they use. If most of your friends are on PS5, choose PlayStation; if they are on Xbox, choose Xbox Series X.
- Check the exact edition they own. A friend using a last-generation version may not be in the same matchmaking pool as someone using the native current-generation edition.
- Do not rely on a Rockstar account to bridge platforms. A shared account identity does not create PlayStation–Xbox multiplayer compatibility.
Cross-generation play inside a console family can also depend on which edition is installed. When coordinating a group, have everyone launch the same current-generation release where possible.
Do you need PlayStation Plus or Game Pass?
PS5 online requirements
Online play on PS5 requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription. The requirement applies to entering GTA Online’s multiplayer service, not to owning a PS5 itself. Membership names, pricing and plan benefits can change by country, so verify the current PlayStation Store requirement for your account region.

Xbox Series X online requirements
Xbox requires a Game Pass plan that includes console multiplayer for GTA Online. Not every Game Pass tier necessarily has identical online benefits, and Microsoft can rename or reorganize tiers. Confirm that the plan you select explicitly includes online console multiplayer before purchase.
How the subscription choice affects the comparison
The recurring access requirement is a platform cost rather than a GTA Online performance difference. Compare the plan you already pay for, the other games in its catalog and the number of household accounts that need access. Do not assume that a trial, promotional period or a plan used on another device automatically covers console multiplayer; read the current terms attached to your account and region.
Can you transfer a GTA character from PS4 or Xbox One?
Yes, but the supported migration is one-time and stays within the same console family:
| Previous console | Destination | What Rockstar documents |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 | PS5 | One-time migration of GTA Online character and progression |
| Xbox One | Xbox Series X|S | One-time migration of GTA Online character and progression |
This is not a PS4-to-Xbox or Xbox-One-to-PS5 conversion. If you switch console families, plan on a new platform-side progression path rather than assuming your existing character will appear on the other service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMigration checklist
- Install the native current-generation GTA V release on the destination console, not only the older backward-compatible edition.
- Sign in to the platform account and Rockstar account associated with the profile you intend to move.
- Open GTA Online and follow the migration prompt shown by the current release.
- Review the destination profile before confirming. Rockstar describes the migration as one-time, so treat the confirmation as irreversible for planning purposes.
- Keep the original console and profile available until you have verified that your character, rank and relevant progression appear correctly.
Account-security checks, eligibility rules and the exact on-screen prompts can change. If the migration option is missing, update the game, confirm that you launched the current-generation edition and check Rockstar’s current support guidance before creating a replacement character.
Is Red Dead Online next-gen on PS5 or Xbox Series X?
No native current-generation release is documented. Rockstar’s service-status page lists Red Dead Online for PS4, Xbox One and PC. Rockstar separately documents backward compatibility for those console versions on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Taken together, that means PS5 runs the PS4 version and Series X runs the Xbox One version through compatibility rather than through a dedicated next-generation edition.
You can therefore play Red Dead Online on either current-generation console if you own the compatible version, but you should not expect GTA Online-style current-generation graphics modes, a separate 60-fps release or a platform-specific next-gen feature set. The backward-compatible game remains tied to its original console generation for release identity and support.

Red Dead purchase and account implications
Check whether your digital license or disc belongs to the matching console family. A PS4 license does not become an Xbox license, and an Xbox One license does not become a PlayStation license. Online-service availability can change, so verify Rockstar’s service-status information if you are buying specifically for Red Dead Online.
Which console should a GTA Online player buy?
Choose PS5 when your priority is PlayStation social compatibility
- Your friends and crew already play on PlayStation.
- You prefer the PS5 controller and system interface.
- You already maintain PlayStation Plus and want to keep one online-membership ecosystem.
- You use headphones or a home-theater setup that you have configured around Tempest 3D positional audio.
Choose Xbox Series X when your priority is Xbox social compatibility
- Your regular group is on Xbox.
- You prefer Xbox party features, controller layout or account ecosystem.
- You already have a Game Pass plan that includes console multiplayer.
- You want your GTA Online and other Xbox console games under one Microsoft account and subscription arrangement.
Choose based on the migration path
If your established character is on PS4, PS5 is the straightforward destination because Rockstar documents a one-time PS4-to-PS5 move. If the character is on Xbox One, Series X|S is the corresponding path. Switching families is a social and progression decision, not just a hardware upgrade.
Choose based on Red Dead expectations
For Red Dead Online, neither console provides a native next-generation edition. Select the system that matches your existing license, friends and subscription rather than expecting one to offer a superior current-generation Red Dead client.
Setup steps for a new GTA Online console
PS5 setup
- Install the PS5 edition of Grand Theft Auto V from your library or the PlayStation Store listing.
- Install available game updates before launching GTA Online.
- Sign in to the PlayStation account and Rockstar account that contain your eligible PS4 character, if you are migrating.
- Open GTA Online, select the migration flow and verify the profile shown before confirming the one-time move.
- Activate or renew PlayStation Plus if the game reports that online multiplayer access is unavailable.
- In the game’s display settings, select the graphics mode that best fits your television and preference for detail or frame rate.
Xbox Series X setup
- Install the Xbox Series X|S edition of Grand Theft Auto V from your Xbox library or the current store listing.
- Apply all updates and sign in with the Xbox account connected to your eligible Xbox One character.
- Launch GTA Online and complete the one-time migration prompt when it appears.
- Confirm that your Game Pass plan includes console multiplayer before troubleshooting the game itself.
- Choose the graphics mode in the in-game settings and enable compatible Spatial Sound features in the console audio settings if your equipment supports them.
Troubleshooting common buying and login mistakes
“My friend cannot join me.”
First check the console family. A PS5 and Xbox Series X cannot share a GTA Online session through crossplay. Next check that both players are using the same generation of the game where possible and that each account has the required online membership.
“I bought the new console but my character is missing.”
Verify that you installed the native current-generation edition, signed into the original platform and Rockstar accounts, and completed the migration flow. A PS4 character migrates to PS5; an Xbox One character migrates to Xbox Series X|S. A cross-family move is not the documented path.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“The game looks like the old version.”
Check the product title and installed application. The PS4 or Xbox One release can run on newer hardware, but it will not provide the complete native current-generation presentation. Confirm the current-generation edition, install updates and review the selected graphics mode.
“Online is locked even though I own GTA V.”
Owning the game and having multiplayer access are separate checks. On PS5, confirm PlayStation Plus; on Xbox, confirm a Game Pass tier with console multiplayer. Also check account restrictions, service status and any regional store requirements.
“Red Dead Online has no next-gen graphics option.”
That is expected from the currently documented release structure. Red Dead Online is listed as a PS4, Xbox One and PC service, while PS5 and Series X support the console versions through backward compatibility. It is not the same native current-generation treatment as GTA Online.
Bottom line for GTA Online buyers
Buy the console your friends use. PS5 and Xbox Series X provide the same essential GTA Online package: native current-generation editions, up to 4K-class output, up to 60-fps modes, HDR, ray tracing, faster loading, current updates and GTA+ availability. Neither platform can join the other’s GTA Online sessions, so social compatibility outweighs small hardware or audio differences.
Use the same-family migration rule to protect an existing character: PS4 to PS5 or Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S, once. For Red Dead Online, choose on the basis of friends, license and subscription because both current-generation consoles are running the last-generation version through backward compatibility.
