Short answer: Both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are officially supported for Grand Theft Auto VI. If GTA VI is the main reason you are buying a console, PS5 is the safer recommendation because PlayStation says the game will “play best on PS5.” That is platform marketing, not an independent frame-rate or image-quality test. Choose Xbox Series X instead if your priority is Xbox ecosystem continuity, backward compatibility, a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive, or keeping an existing Xbox library.
GTA VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026. Take-Two Interactive lists a U.S. standard game price of $79.99. Final cross-platform performance comparisons are not available, so no honest buying guide can yet declare a resolution or frame-rate winner.
What is officially confirmed about GTA VI on consoles?
Rockstar Games Customer Support lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the console platforms for Grand Theft Auto VI. That means an Xbox Series S is officially supported as well as Series X; you do not need Series X merely to run the game. The support listing does not establish identical resolution, frame-rate, visual settings, loading times, or feature support across the three consoles.
Take-Two Interactive’s June 24, 2026 announcement gives November 19, 2026 as the launch date and $79.99 as the standard U.S. price. That is the game price, not the cost of a console, storage expansion, accessories, tax, or an online-service subscription. Regional pricing and retailer offers can differ.

Because the game has not launched, independent testing cannot yet answer whether PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S delivers the highest resolution or most stable frame rate. Any article promising a measured winner before release is making a prediction rather than reporting a benchmark.
The decision in one table
| If your priority is… | Best starting choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| GTA VI above everything else | PS5 | PlayStation’s official campaign says GTA VI will “play best on PS5.” Treat that as Sony’s positioning, not laboratory evidence. |
| Xbox library and account continuity | Xbox Series X | Xbox provides ecosystem continuity and backward compatibility, and Series X adds the highest hardware tier in the Xbox family. |
| Physical games and 4K Blu-ray | Xbox Series X disc model or PS5 Disc Edition | Both are disc-capable choices; verify that the GTA VI edition you want is sold physically in your region. |
| Lowest current PS5 entry price | PS5 Digital Edition | Sony’s U.S. recommended price is $599.99, before tax and live-retailer changes. |
| Premium PlayStation hardware | PS5 Pro | It costs substantially more, but no independent GTA VI test currently proves that the premium produces a specific resolution or frame-rate benefit. |
| Xbox’s lower-cost current-generation option | Xbox Series S | Rockstar lists Series X|S support. It is a valid GTA VI platform, but final Series S settings and performance have not been independently measured. |
Why PS5 is the GTA VI-first recommendation
PlayStation’s official GTA VI claim
PlayStation Blog states: “Grand Theft Auto VI will play best on PS5 by taking advantage of PS5’s immersive features to deliver a deeply engaging single-player experience when it launches on November 19.” The statement comes from PlayStation/Sony Interactive Entertainment, the platform holder, and should be read as marketing language. It does not publish a frame-rate target, resolution comparison, graphics mode list, or independent test methodology.
The wording still matters to a buyer who wants the platform that Rockstar’s marketing partner is emphasizing. It indicates that PlayStation expects the PS5 version to make use of platform-specific immersive capabilities, particularly for the single-player experience. It does not prove that every PS5 model will outperform Xbox Series X in raw image quality, nor does it establish that PS5 Pro is required.

Sony Interactive Entertainment’s recommended U.S. prices effective April 2, 2026 are shown below. These are dated MSRPs, not guaranteed checkout prices. Availability, retailer discounts, bundles, regional taxes, and later price changes can alter the amount you actually pay; check live listings before ordering. The figures were checked against the information available on October 18, 2026.
| Model | U.S. recommended price | What the price means for a GTA VI buyer |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 Disc Edition | $649.99 | Higher upfront cost than the Digital Edition, with a disc drive for physical games and films. |
| PS5 Digital Edition | $599.99 | Lowest listed PS5 price; plan on downloading GTA VI and buying future games digitally unless a compatible drive option is available for your exact model. |
| PS5 Pro | $899.99 | Premium price. There is no final independent GTA VI benchmark showing what improvement, if any, it delivers over the standard PS5 models. |
The $50 gap between the listed PS5 Disc Edition and Digital Edition is smaller than the cost of replacing a large physical library with digital purchases over several years, but the right choice depends on how you buy games. Sony’s figures do not include the $79.99 GTA VI purchase, a display, extra storage, or taxes.
Is PS5 Pro worth buying for GTA VI?
There is no evidence yet to justify buying PS5 Pro solely for a guaranteed GTA VI frame-rate or resolution advantage. Its $899.99 U.S. recommended price is $250 above the listed PS5 Disc Edition and $300 above the Digital Edition. Until Rockstar or independent testers publish final modes and measurements, the rational reasons to choose Pro are your general preference for premium PlayStation hardware and the value you place on any system-wide advantages—not a promised GTA VI benchmark.
If GTA VI is your only planned game, wait for launch reviews and measurements if your schedule allows. If you need a console before release, the standard PS5 is the lower-risk GTA-first purchase because it is explicitly the platform PlayStation is promoting and costs less than Pro.
What Xbox Series X offers
Published Series X hardware
Microsoft’s current product specification lists Xbox Series X with an eight-core Zen 2 CPU, a 12-teraflop RDNA 2 GPU, 16GB of GDDR6 memory, a 1TB NVMe SSD, a 4K target, and support for up to 120 frames per second in compatible software. The disc model includes a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive. Those are console capabilities and targets, not a promise that GTA VI will run at 4K or 120 frames per second.
| Xbox Series X specification | Published value | Practical relevance |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | 8-core Zen 2 | Provides the processing platform for a large open-world game; it does not predict GTA VI’s final frame rate without testing. |
| GPU | 12-teraflop RDNA 2 | Indicates Microsoft’s stated graphics capability, not a cross-console benchmark. |
| Memory | 16GB GDDR6 | Shared system graphics memory; allocation and game settings determine real results. |
| Storage | 1TB NVMe SSD | Useful for installing a large game, although usable capacity is lower than the advertised raw figure and GTA VI’s final install size is not stated. |
| Display target | 4K target; up to 120 FPS | Targets vary by game and graphics mode. Do not treat them as GTA VI guarantees. |
| Optical drive | 4K UHD Blu-ray on the disc model | Allows physical games and movie discs; confirm the exact SKU because a digital-only configuration has different ownership options. |
Xbox Series X price and the 2026 change
The Xbox product page captured for this comparison lists the 1TB disc-drive Series X at a $799.99 ERP. Xbox Wire announced on June 25, 2026 that prices changed worldwide effective August 1, 2026, attributing the increases to component costs. Because Microsoft’s price notice is global while the product-page figure is an ERP, treat $799.99 as a dated reference rather than a universal checkout price. Your country, retailer, tax, bundle, and stock situation may produce a different total.
That reference price is higher than Sony’s listed standard PS5 prices. The comparison is not perfectly like-for-like if a retailer bundles a game, extra controller, or storage with either console. Compare the complete package you will actually receive, not just the console headline.

Will GTA VI run better on PS5 or Xbox Series X?
No reliable answer exists before final independent testing. Rockstar’s platform listing confirms support, Microsoft publishes Series X specifications, and PlayStation publishes its “play best on PS5” statement. None of those sources is a controlled PS5-versus-Series-X GTA VI benchmark.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Performance reviewers will need a released build to measure frame-time consistency, resolution in each graphics mode, image reconstruction, texture quality, loading behavior, ray-tracing effects, crowd density, and visual differences between standard PS5, PS5 Pro, and both Xbox models. Until then, statements such as “Xbox has higher resolution,” “PS5 has a locked 60 fps mode,” or “PS5 Pro runs GTA VI at 4K” are speculation.
Do not infer a winner by comparing teraflop numbers alone. Different architectures, memory allocations, developer settings, reconstruction techniques, CPU limits, and patches can make nominal specifications poor predictors of a specific game’s result. The same caution applies to the 4K and 120-FPS targets printed on the Series X product page.
PS5 versus Xbox Series X: ownership cost
Reference totals before tax and accessories
| Configuration | Console reference price | GTA VI standard U.S. price | Simple subtotal | Price qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 Digital Edition + GTA VI | $599.99 | $79.99 | $679.98 | Sony MSRP effective April 2, 2026; game price from Take-Two’s June 24, 2026 announcement. |
| PS5 Disc Edition + GTA VI | $649.99 | $79.99 | $729.98 | Same dated U.S. references; physical-game availability and retailer pricing can differ. |
| PS5 Pro + GTA VI | $899.99 | $79.99 | $979.98 | Sony MSRP effective April 2, 2026; no GTA VI performance premium has been independently established. |
| Xbox Series X disc model + GTA VI | $799.99 ERP | $79.99 | $879.98 | ERP shown on the captured Microsoft product page; Xbox announced worldwide price changes effective August 1, 2026. |
These subtotals exclude tax, delivery, a second controller, headphones, a display, storage expansion, and any online-service requirement for multiplayer. They also assume the $79.99 standard U.S. edition; deluxe editions, regional prices, sales, and bundles may differ. Prices and stock change, so use the table for orientation rather than as a live quote.
Disc ownership versus digital ownership
A disc-capable console gives you the option to buy a physical GTA VI edition if Rockstar and retailers release one in your region. Physical ownership can help buyers who trade or resell games, buy used copies, collect cases, or install from a disc. It also requires storing and inserting the disc whenever the console verifies ownership, and a disc does not eliminate patches or downloads.
A digital-only console is simpler if you want instant downloads and do not exchange games. Digital purchases are tied to the relevant account ecosystem, so account security and long-term access policies matter more than they do for a disc on a shelf. Confirm whether a particular PS5 Digital Edition can accept an add-on drive and what that drive costs before assuming you can convert it later.
Xbox Series X|S, backward compatibility, and your existing library
Xbox Series X is the better fit when you already use Xbox accounts, accessories, saves, or a substantial backward-compatible library. Microsoft positions backward compatibility and ecosystem continuity as core reasons to remain in the Xbox family. Moving to PS5 may mean rebuilding your digital purchases or maintaining two systems, depending on which games you own and their cross-platform policies.
Series S is officially supported for GTA VI because Rockstar lists Xbox Series X|S. However, Series S is not the same hardware tier as Series X, and its final GTA VI resolution, frame rate, visual settings, and storage requirements have not been independently established. Select Series S if its price and compact digital format matter more than maximum headroom. Select Series X if you want the published 1TB SSD, the higher Xbox hardware tier, a disc drive, and a 4K-oriented console target.
Do not assume that a subscription catalog will include GTA VI at launch. Neither the platform listing nor the stated $79.99 standard price confirms subscription availability. Price your preferred console, the game, and any service required for the multiplayer features you intend to use.

What is known
Microsoft lists a 1TB NVMe SSD for Series X. The advertised capacity is not the same as free space after the operating system and reserved data, and Rockstar has not stated GTA VI’s final install size in the information available here. A large open-world release may also require a substantial launch update, so leave more free space than the package minimum suggests.

- 🚀 CPU: 3.5GHz, 8-core AMD Zen 2
- 🚀 Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
- 🚀 RAM: 16GB GDDR6
- 🚀 GPU: 10.3 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU
No comparable PS5 storage figure or GTA VI install-size figure is established here. Check the exact PS5 model’s usable capacity and Sony’s current expansion requirements when you buy. Do not choose between consoles on an assumed install size or an unverified claim that one version needs less space.
A sensible preparation checklist
- Use a wired connection or a reliable high-speed Wi-Fi network for the initial download and launch-day patch.
- Free enough internal space before November 19, 2026 rather than waiting for the release-day download to reveal the requirement.
- Check the console manufacturer’s current compatibility rules before purchasing an internal expansion drive.
- Keep the console firmware current; a day-one patch may require a system update.
- If you buy physical media, expect downloads and updates even when the game arrives on a disc.
Controller, display, and accessibility considerations
PlayStation’s “play best” statement specifically refers to PS5 immersive features and a deeply engaging single-player experience. If you prefer the PS5 controller’s shape, adaptive behavior, vibration style, audio integration, or other platform-specific options, that preference is a legitimate reason to choose PS5 even without a benchmark. Test the controller in a store if hand size, weight, button layout, or fatigue affects long sessions.
Xbox may be preferable if you already use its controller layout, accessibility hardware, account settings, or console interface. Consistent controls can matter more over a 40-hour story than a small difference in an unmeasured graphics mode. Check each platform’s current accessibility settings for remapping, text scaling, contrast, audio controls, and supported peripherals before purchase; exact options and compatibility can change through software updates.
Recommended Free Tools
Match the console to your display. A 120-Hz television cannot make a game run at 120 frames per second, and a 4K screen cannot force a game to render at native 4K. Wait for Rockstar’s final graphics modes before buying a new display specifically for GTA VI.
Which console should each type of buyer choose?
Choose PS5 if GTA VI is the only reason you are upgrading
Buy the standard PS5 model that matches your disc preference. PlayStation is the only platform holder making a direct claim that GTA VI will play best on its console, and both PS5 versions are officially supported. The standard models cost less than the listed PS5 Pro and avoid paying for an unproven GTA VI advantage.
Choose Xbox Series X if you are continuing an Xbox setup
Series X makes sense when your existing games, saves, accessories, friends, and backward-compatible library are already on Xbox. Its disc model also suits buyers who want physical games and 4K UHD Blu-ray playback. Accept the higher reference price and do not interpret Microsoft’s hardware targets as a confirmed GTA VI result.
Choose Xbox Series S if budget and digital-only ownership dominate
Series S will run GTA VI according to Rockstar’s Series X|S platform listing. It is the appropriate Xbox choice when the lower tier’s size and price outweigh concerns about final resolution, frame rate, storage, and visual settings. Those details remain unknown until testing.
Choose PS5 Pro only for broader premium-console reasons
PS5 Pro is a rational purchase if you want premium PlayStation hardware for several games and accept the $899.99 U.S. recommended price. It is not yet a defensible GTA VI-only purchase based on measured evidence, because no final independent comparison establishes its benefit.
When and how to buy
- Set your platform priority. Decide whether GTA VI-first positioning or Xbox continuity and backward compatibility matters more than the other.
- Select the edition. Choose disc or digital ownership before comparing prices. Confirm the exact model name, included drive, storage, and warranty.
- Check the live total. Compare current retailer prices, tax, delivery, bundles, and stock against the dated reference figures above.
- Budget for the game separately. Use $79.99 as the announced standard U.S. reference price, then verify your region and edition.
- Prepare storage and networking. Update firmware, clear internal space, and confirm your internet connection can handle a large download and launch patch.
- Reassess after independent testing if you can wait. Look for measured comparisons of PS5, PS5 Pro, Series X, and Series S rather than platform advertisements or specification-only predictions.
Final recommendation
For a buyer whose central question is “Which console should I buy for GTA VI?”, choose PS5—normally the standard Disc Edition if you want physical games, or Digital Edition if you are committed to downloads. That recommendation follows PlayStation’s official “play best on PS5” positioning, not a proven performance lead.
Choose Xbox Series X when your existing Xbox ecosystem, backward compatibility, disc drive, or Microsoft account library is more valuable than PS5’s GTA VI-first messaging. Choose Series S only if its digital, lower-tier design fits your budget and you accept that final visual settings are not yet known. In every case, avoid paying for PS5 Pro or any console on the assumption of a frame-rate or resolution advantage that independent launch testing has not established.
