For most people, buy a PS5 now if you want to play current and near-term games. The PS5 is available, its library is established, and Sony says Grand Theft Auto VI will play best on PS5. Waiting for PS6 makes sense only if you are comfortable with an unknown launch date, unknown price, unknown specifications and an unconfirmed launch lineup.
Sony has not publicly settled when PS6 will launch or how much it will cost. That makes a buy-now decision possible to price and plan, while a wait decision is a bet on a platform that has no confirmed consumer details yet.
What is certain about PS5 in 2026
PS5 launched on November 12, 2020, in select territories and on November 19, 2020, globally. Sony’s official description includes full backward compatibility for the PS4 library, so a PS5 can serve as a replacement for a PS4 while also providing access to PS5 games.

| Model | Current U.S. listed price | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | $649.99 | Players who want the standard console option and physical-media flexibility |
| PS5 Digital Edition | $599.99 | Players who intend to buy and download games digitally |
| PS5 Pro | $899.99 | Players considering Sony’s higher-priced PS5 model rather than waiting for a new generation |
The $50 difference between the listed PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition prices is small enough that your buying habits matter more than the initial gap. A disc-capable model can accommodate physical games and other disc use; a digital-only model commits you to downloads and digital purchases. The table does not imply a performance comparison between models: the supplied Sony pricing information establishes prices, not a complete specification sheet.
What is—and is not—known about PS6
There is no confirmed PS6 launch date or price in the available Sony financial-disclosure reporting. Treat every specific date, dollar figure, component list or launch-game list circulating elsewhere as unconfirmed unless Sony announces it directly.
That uncertainty has practical consequences:
- You cannot schedule a purchase around a reliable PS6 release window.
- You cannot set a realistic PS6 budget from an official recommended price.
- You cannot know whether a particular PS5 game, accessory or save will carry forward.
- You cannot judge the launch lineup against the games you want to play today.
Backward compatibility for PS6 has not been established in the supplied information. Do not buy a PS5—or postpone buying one—on the assumption that every PS5 game will work on PS6. Sony may provide compatibility details later, but they are not facts you can use for a purchase decision now.
Software: the strongest reason to buy a PS5 now
A console is useful when it can play the games you actually want. PS5 already has a current library, and it also gives you access to the PS4 library through Sony’s stated full backward compatibility. PS6’s launch selection remains unknown, so waiting trades known access for a possible future lineup.
Grand Theft Auto VI
Sony’s announcement says, “Grand Theft Auto VI will play best on PS5,” and lists November 19 as its launch date. The supplied announcement does not establish a PS6 version, a PS6 performance advantage or a different release date. If this game is a priority, a PS5 is the platform with a clearly stated Sony position today.
That statement does not guarantee that every technical detail, edition or future platform decision is settled. It does establish the straightforward buying implication: you do not need to wait for an unannounced console to plan for the game on PS5.
Existing PS4 and PS5 games
People with a PS4 collection have a concrete reason to choose PS5: Sony describes the PS5 as fully backward compatible with the PS4 library. This is different from assuming that PS6 will accept PS5 discs or digital licenses. If you want to continue playing an existing PS4 collection while moving to current releases, PS5 provides the documented path.
For a household buying its first PlayStation, the decision is simpler. Choose PS5 when you can name games available now or on the near-term schedule that justify the purchase. Choose to wait only when those games can wait too and the possibility of a newer platform matters more than having a console immediately.
Physical games and the January 2028 change
Sony says that physical disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting in January 2028. Sony also says games released before that point remain playable from disc.
This is a change in how new releases are produced, not an announcement that existing discs suddenly stop working. It does, however, make the choice between a disc-capable PS5 and a digital-only PS5 more consequential:

- A disc-capable PS5 lets you use physical releases made before the January 2028 cutoff and any other supported discs you already own.
- A digital-only PS5 requires digital purchase or download access for the games you choose; it cannot use a physical game disc.
- After January 2028, newly released PlayStation games will no longer have physical disc production under Sony’s stated policy, so buying a disc model is not a guarantee that every future release will be available on disc.
If you trade, lend, collect or buy used games, the standard PS5 is the safer fit for your habits during the period in which physical releases are still produced. If you already buy everything digitally and do not expect that to change, the Digital Edition’s lower listed price may be more relevant. The policy does not establish PS6’s media format, so it cannot be used as proof that PS6 will be digital-only.

| Timing | Available now | No confirmed launch date |
| Price | U.S. listed prices are $599.99, $649.99 or $899.99 depending on model | No confirmed price |

| Media planning | Disc model supports physical games; Sony’s new-disc production cutoff begins January 2028 | Media format not announced |
| Risk | You buy before a newer generation appears | You may wait an unknown length of time without a price or date |
The table is not a performance forecast. It separates what can be decided with published information from what remains speculative. A PS5 purchase is the lower-uncertainty choice; waiting is the lower-commitment choice only if you already have a working console or another way to play the games you want.
Which PS5 model should you choose?
PS5 at $649.99
Choose the standard PS5 when physical media is part of your routine or when you want to preserve that option. It is the sensible default for households that buy some games on disc, inherit games from family members, collect releases or want flexibility during the transition toward Sony’s 2028 physical-production policy.
The extra $50 over the listed Digital Edition price is an upfront cost you pay for that flexibility. Whether it is worthwhile depends on how often you would otherwise need to repurchase a digital copy or give up a physical purchase—not on any unconfirmed PS6 feature.
PS5 Digital Edition at $599.99
Choose the Digital Edition when your library is already digital, your internet connection can handle game downloads and you accept that physical discs are not an option on this console. It has the lowest listed PS5 price in the supplied 2026 figures.
Before selecting it, inventory your current games. A disc collection cannot be converted into digital ownership merely by signing in. You would need digital versions where available, and the cost and availability of those versions are not fixed by the console’s list price.
PS5 Pro at $899.99
The PS5 Pro is listed at $899.99, making it $250 more than the standard PS5 and $300 more than the Digital Edition at the same 2026 U.S. pricing. The supplied information does not provide a complete specification or game-by-game benefit analysis, so do not justify the premium using performance claims that Sony has not established here.
Consider it only if you have a specific reason to choose Sony’s higher-priced PS5 model and are comfortable paying that premium while PS6’s date and price remain unknown. If your main goal is simply to play PS5 games and GTA VI, the standard decision is between buying a PS5 now and waiting—not assuming the Pro is a substitute for a next-generation launch.
A practical decision process

Write down the titles you want to play, whether they are available now, and whether November 19’s GTA VI launch matters to you. If you cannot name a game you would play on PS5, waiting becomes easier to justify.
- Set a hard budget. Start with the applicable U.S. listed price—$599.99, $649.99 or $899.99—then leave room for tax and any games or accessories you need. Do not reserve money for PS6 using an invented price.
- Decide how you buy games. If you use discs, select the standard PS5. If you buy only downloads and accept that limitation, the Digital Edition is the lower-priced choice. Remember Sony’s January 2028 new-disc-production policy when estimating how long physical availability matters to you.
- Check your existing library. A PS4 owner can rely on Sony’s stated full PS4 backward compatibility on PS5. Do not count on PS6 compatibility because it has not been announced.
- Choose your tolerance for waiting. Buy now if an unknown date would frustrate you or leave you without access to desired games. Wait if your current system covers your needs and you would rather accept uncertainty than buy before the next generation is announced.
- Revisit only confirmed announcements. If you wait, make your next decision when Sony provides an official date, price, specifications or compatibility information. A rumor should not change your budget or purchase plan by itself.
When waiting is the better choice
Waiting is reasonable for a reader who already owns a working PS4 or PS5, has no must-play PS5 release, and is comfortable with an open-ended timeline. You avoid buying a console immediately before a possible generational transition, but you accept that Sony has not supplied the information needed to schedule that transition.

Waiting can also suit someone whose television, storage, internet service or living arrangement is changing. In that case, delaying the purchase may let you make one coordinated setup decision rather than buying hardware twice. That is a personal timing advantage, not evidence about PS6’s eventual specifications.
When buying a PS5 now is the better choice
Buy now when you want access to the PS5 library, need a replacement for a failing PS4, or want to be ready for GTA VI on the platform Sony says will play it best. The purchase is also easier to defend when several people in a household share one console and the cost of waiting is lost play time.
Buying now does not prevent you from considering PS6 later. It simply gives you a known system, known prices and a documented PS4-library compatibility story instead of asking you to plan around announcements that have not happened.
Common mistakes to avoid
Paying a rumor premium
Do not pay an inflated resale price or commit to a savings target based on an alleged PS6 date or price. Neither is confirmed in the available information. Compare any real PS5 offer with Sony’s current listed U.S. prices and check what the seller actually includes.
Assuming every PS5 game will transfer
PS5 compatibility with PS6 has not been established. Keep your PS5 discs and account purchases if you move to a new console later, but do not treat that practical precaution as a promise that PS6 will run them.
Confusing disc production with disc playback
Sony’s January 2028 policy concerns production of discs for new games. Sony separately states that games released before then remain playable from disc. Those are different points: the policy does not say that your existing pre-2028 discs stop working.
Choosing Digital Edition solely for the $50 saving
The lower listed price is useful only if the digital-only limitation fits your buying habits. If you later need physical games, the initial saving may not compensate for the flexibility you gave up.

Choose a PS5 now when you want a console you can buy, price and use today. The standard PS5 is the flexible choice for physical-media households at $649.99; the $599.99 Digital Edition suits an all-download library; and the $899.99 PS5 Pro is a premium PS5 option whose specific advantages are not established by the available information.
Wait for PS6 only when your current hardware is sufficient and you are willing to live without a confirmed date, price, specifications, launch lineup or backward-compatibility policy. Until Sony announces those details, waiting is patience—not a documented upgrade plan.
