Choose PS5 for a fixed, plug-and-play JRPG experience with fast loading, DualSense features, and PS5-first releases such as Final Fantasy XVI. Choose PC if adjustable settings, high frame rates, mods, and upgrade options matter more than simplicity—and you are prepared to meet each game’s hardware requirements. Choose Nintendo Switch 2 if handheld play and Nintendo’s ecosystem are essential, while accepting that game compatibility, upgrades, and performance vary by title.

The short answer: match the platform to your must-play list

There is no defensible single ranking for “the best JRPG platform.” Official publishers do not publish a comparable total JRPG count for PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, and the overlap between libraries is growing. A better decision starts with the games you actually intend to play, then weighs where and how you want to play them.

Choose Best fit Main compromise
PS5 Players who want a predictable console target, rapid SSD loading, DualSense effects, and PS5-first presentation Less control over graphics and performance settings; some releases are increasingly shared with PC and Switch 2
PC Players who want adjustable image quality, frame-rate targets, mods, multiple input methods, and upgrade paths Higher setup complexity and game-specific requirements for RAM, GPU, operating system, DirectX, and storage
Nintendo Switch 2 Players who prioritize handheld play, flexible locations, and Nintendo’s first-party ecosystem Older Switch compatibility and upgrade treatment differ by game, and performance is not uniform

Use the decision process near the end of this guide before buying hardware. It prevents a common mistake: choosing a platform for its reputation, then discovering that one non-negotiable JRPG is unavailable or requires an expensive upgrade.

How your JRPG library is distributed

PS5-first releases still matter

Sony’s Final Fantasy XVI page describes the game as a PS5 exclusive and emphasizes the console’s 4K output, DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers, and shortened loading from the high-speed SSD. Its stated experience is built around a known hardware target rather than a range of user-configured PCs.

  • Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
  • Vertical Stand sold seperately

That does not mean every PS5 JRPG remains permanently console-exclusive. A publisher can later release a Windows version, and the same title can appear on another console after an exclusivity period. Treat “exclusive” as a claim tied to the specific platform, edition, and time you are evaluating, not as a guarantee about the entire life of the game.

PC and console libraries increasingly overlap

Square Enix lists Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Its broader release matrix shows that other Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games are distributed unevenly, so one shared release should not be used to infer that the entire publisher catalog is available everywhere.

For a practical comparison, write down five to ten specific games. Mark the platform listing for each one and note whether the listing is for a native version, backward-compatible version, cloud version, or announced future release. This list is more useful than an unverified claim that one system has “the most JRPGs.”

Switch 2 changes the portability calculation

Nintendo lists Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for Switch 2 on June 3, 2026. The listed download is 91.5 GB, a substantial amount for a handheld system and its internal storage or expansion plan. The release makes the JRPG case for Switch 2 stronger than it was for the original Switch, but availability alone does not tell you how a game performs in handheld mode or whether every older Switch title works unchanged.

PS5: the straightforward choice for a fixed JRPG experience

What the hardware gives you

Sony’s CFI-21XX manual lists an eight-core, 16-thread Zen 2 CPU, a 10-teraflop RDNA-based GPU, 16 GB of GDDR6 memory, and either a 1 TB or 825 GB custom SSD depending on model. Those are the published baseline specifications; they do not mean every game uses identical resolution or frame-rate settings.

The custom SSD is relevant to long RPGs with large environments and frequent transitions. Sony specifically describes shortened load times and a faster return to action on the PS5 high-speed SSD. You still need to manage free space: large installs, patches, and downloadable expansions can consume the drive quickly, especially on the model with 825 GB of storage.

Why PS5 suits players who do not want to tune a system

  • Every PS5 game targets the same broad hardware family, so you do not have to select a graphics preset or match a GPU before starting.
  • DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers can add tactile effects where a game supports them.
  • Console setup is generally a matter of connecting the system, updating it, and installing the game rather than troubleshooting drivers and component compatibility.
  • Television play, couch distance, and a single controller are natural defaults for long story-driven sessions.

PS5 trade-offs

  • You cannot freely raise or lower individual settings, replace the GPU, or target an arbitrary frame rate.
  • A game’s quality and performance modes are fixed by the developer’s console configuration.
  • Storage expansion and accessories add to the system’s total cost, although current prices are not established here.
  • The library advantage is title-specific. A PS5-first game may later receive a PC release, while another JRPG may launch simultaneously on several systems.

Who should start with PS5?

Start with PS5 if Final Fantasy XVI is mandatory and you want the least uncertain route to its console presentation, or if you prefer to avoid PC configuration. It is also the safer choice when your household expects a conventional living-room console and you value predictable controls over customization.

PC: the most flexible JRPG platform, with requirements to verify

What flexibility means in practice

A Windows gaming PC can let you choose resolution, upscaling, texture quality, shadows, frame-rate limits, refresh-rate targets, and input devices. PlayStation’s PC support information says PlayStation Studios PC games support mouse and keyboard as well as other controllers, with features varying by title. That last qualification matters: controller layouts, haptics, ultrawide support, save transfers, and other features can differ between ports.

PC is also the platform with the clearest upgrade path. You can add memory, replace a graphics card, install a larger SSD, or move to a faster display later. Mods may add accessibility options, interface changes, fan translations, visual adjustments, or entirely new content, but mod support is determined by each game and can introduce its own maintenance or compatibility problems.

Use the published requirements, not a platform stereotype

The Steam listing for Final Fantasy XVI requires Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit), 16 GB of RAM, a GeForce GTX 1070 or Radeon RX 5700-class GPU or better, DirectX 12, and 170 GB of storage. Its recommended tier targets 60 frames per second at 1080p. These are requirements for that PC version, not a universal minimum for every JRPG.

Final Fantasy XVI PC requirement Published detail What to check before buying a PC
Operating system Windows 10/11, 64-bit Your edition and update status
Memory 16 GB RAM Installed RAM available to the game after background applications
Graphics GTX 1070/RX 5700-class or better Your exact GPU model, driver support, and graphics memory
API DirectX 12 Whether the system and driver expose the required feature level
Storage 170 GB Free SSD capacity for the install, updates, and other games
Recommended target 60 fps at 1080p Whether your display and settings can sustain that target

PC costs beyond the tower

Current prices are not established here, so a responsible comparison cannot quote a total PC cost. Budget for the complete setup instead of only the processor and graphics card: the computer, Windows license where applicable, display, keyboard, mouse or controller, sufficient SSD space, and potentially extra RAM. A prebuilt system can reduce assembly work; a self-built system can offer more control but requires component compatibility checks.

PC failure modes and practical fixes

  • Not enough storage: compare the game’s listed install size with free SSD space, leaving room for updates. A 170 GB requirement should not be treated as a drive with only 170 GB available.
  • Unstable frame rate: confirm the GPU model and driver, then lower the most expensive settings, reduce resolution or use the game’s supported upscaling option, and set a realistic frame-rate cap.
  • Input problems: connect the controller before launching, check the game’s input settings, and remember that feature support varies by PC title.
  • Background-memory pressure: close unnecessary applications and verify that the system meets the 16 GB listing with usable memory, not merely installed capacity.
  • Compatibility assumptions: check the individual store page for every JRPG. A machine that runs one port comfortably may not meet another game’s GPU or storage target.

Who should start with PC?

Start with PC if you already own a Windows machine that meets your must-play games’ requirements, want graphics and frame-rate control, or expect to keep upgrading over several years. It is the strongest fit for players who actively value mods and multiple input methods and who are comfortable diagnosing storage, driver, and settings issues.

Nintendo Switch 2: portability first, verification required

The decisive advantage is where you can play

Switch 2 is the natural starting point when handheld play is a requirement rather than a bonus. You can move a long RPG between a television and portable sessions without maintaining a separate console and PC setup. Nintendo’s first-party ecosystem is another reason to choose it, particularly if your JRPG library is built around Nintendo-published series alongside third-party games.

Major JRPG support is expanding

The announced Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, dated June 3, 2026, demonstrates that a large modern JRPG can join Nintendo’s newer hardware library. Nintendo lists a 91.5 GB download, so plan storage before purchase. Digital capacity, download time, and available space for patches are part of the portability decision.

Compatibility is not automatic

Nintendo warns that “certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.” Some games receive free upgrades, some receive paid upgrades, and some may have no equivalent upgrade. Confirm the exact game in Nintendo’s compatibility and update information before assuming an existing Switch collection will carry over perfectly.

Switch 2 library question What you need to verify
Will an older Switch game run? Whether Nintendo lists it as supported and whether any functions are limited
Is the newer version native? Whether the listing describes a Switch 2 edition, an upgrade, or backward compatibility
Is the upgrade free? Whether Nintendo or the publisher specifies free, paid, or unavailable upgrade treatment
How much space is required? The listed download size plus room for patches and other games

Switch 2 trade-offs

  • Performance, resolution, and frame rate can vary widely between ports because developers choose different targets.
  • Compatibility decisions are game-specific, so a working Switch title does not prove that another one will be fully supported.
  • Large downloads can conflict with the idea of a grab-and-go handheld library unless you plan storage carefully.
  • You have less control over settings than on PC and should not expect every third-party release to match its PS5 or PC counterpart.

Who should start with Switch 2?

Start with Switch 2 when portability and Nintendo’s ecosystem outrank maximum image quality or guaranteed parity with other versions. Make a title-by-title checklist for older Switch games and confirm upgrade terms for any JRPG you already own.

Compare the platforms by the decision that actually matters

Must-play availability

Availability is binary for a must-play game: either the version you want exists on the platform, or it does not. Begin with the five-to-ten-game list, then distinguish released versions from announced ports. For example, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is listed across all three platforms, while Final Fantasy XVI is explicitly presented by Sony as a PS5 exclusive on its PlayStation page even though a separate Steam listing documents a Windows version. Check the current publisher listing and edition before purchase.

Image quality and frame rate

PS5 gives you developer-selected modes on a known hardware target. PC gives you the broadest tuning range, but the result depends on your components and settings. Switch 2 prioritizes a portable form factor, so each port’s resolution and frame-rate target must be assessed separately. Do not convert a console’s advertised output capability into a promise that every JRPG renders at that resolution or frame rate.

Controls and accessibility

PS5’s DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers are meaningful if a game implements them. PC can support keyboard, mouse, and controllers, but the PlayStation PC support guidance says features vary by title. Switch 2’s value is the ability to play handheld or docked; assess whether a particular game’s text size, interface scaling, and control layout remain comfortable in handheld mode.

Storage and upgrade friction

PS5’s 825 GB or 1 TB SSD baseline and PC’s 170 GB Final Fantasy XVI requirement show why storage planning matters on every platform. Switch 2’s 91.5 GB Final Fantasy VII Rebirth listing makes the same point in a portable context. Leave headroom for updates and do not buy a drive or memory card based only on the initial download number.

Up-front and ongoing spending

PS5 has a defined console purchase plus optional storage and accessories. PC spending varies most because the starting machine may already exist, or it may need a GPU, RAM, SSD, display, and input devices. Switch 2 adds the system and any storage solution needed for large downloads. Since current regional prices are not established here, compare complete setups rather than headline hardware prices.

A five-step platform decision for your library

  1. List five to ten must-play JRPGs. Record the exact platform listing, edition, release status, and whether you need a physical copy, digital download, or backward-compatible version.
  2. Flag a deal-breaker. If Final Fantasy XVI is mandatory, begin with PS5 or a PC that meets its published Windows, RAM, GPU, DirectX 12, and 170 GB requirements. Do not assume a Switch 2 version exists.
  3. Prioritize portability honestly. If you need to play away from a television, start with Switch 2 and verify each game’s compatibility and upgrade status. If portability is merely convenient, compare the other advantages before paying for it.
  4. Choose your performance philosophy. Select PC for settings, high-frame-rate targets, mods, and upgrades; select PS5 for a fixed configuration; select Switch 2 when handheld access outweighs parity.
  5. Recheck volatile listings. Publisher ports, release dates, compatibility notes, and upgrade policies can change. Confirm the store or publisher page immediately before buying hardware or a game.

Common buying mistakes

  • Counting announcements as available games: a dated listing is different from a playable release.
  • Assuming one publisher’s pattern applies to all JRPGs: Square Enix’s own release matrix shows uneven distribution across Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest titles.
  • Ignoring storage: the 91.5 GB and 170 GB examples are large enough to affect the hardware decision.
  • Buying a PC by GPU name alone: operating system, RAM, DirectX version, drivers, CPU, and free SSD space all matter.
  • Assuming Switch compatibility: Nintendo explicitly says some games may not be supported or fully compatible, and upgrade terms can be free, paid, or unavailable.
  • Treating a console’s output capability as a game guarantee: actual resolution and frame-rate modes are selected per title.

Verdict: which platform fits which JRPG player?

PS5 is the safest all-round recommendation for a console-first JRPG player who wants fast SSD loading, DualSense features, and a stable hardware target, especially when a PS5-first game such as Final Fantasy XVI is central to the library.

PC is the best fit for a technically minded player who will check requirements, maintain drivers and storage, and use the benefits of adjustable settings, high frame rates, mods, and upgrades.

Switch 2 is the right choice for a portability-led library when handheld access and Nintendo’s ecosystem are decisive. Its growing catalog—including the listed Final Fantasy VII Rebirth release—improves the case, but compatibility and upgrade details must be checked for every older Switch game.

The platform that fits your library is therefore the one that clears your non-negotiable games first, then matches your preferred place, performance target, and tolerance for configuration. Recheck current listings because ports and compatibility policies continue to change.
