Yes—you can remove the GTA V game installation from your PS5 without deleting its saved data. Use Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps and delete GTA V there. Do not use the separate saved-data menu. Game installations and saves are managed independently, so deleting the installation frees internal space while leaving Story Mode and other local saves in place.
Before changing anything, check which storage category is full and decide whether you want to delete GTA V, move its installation to USB extended storage, or add an M.2 SSD. Each option affects game files differently, and none should be confused with backing up a PS5 save.
Game installation and saved data are separate on PS5
The PS5 has two different management areas that look similar but perform very different actions:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| What you select | Menu path | What it removes | What remains |
|---|---|---|---|
| Games and Apps | Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps |
Installed game files, updates and selected add-ons | Saved data managed in the separate saved-data area |
| Saved Data (PS5/PS4) | Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5/PS4) > Upload or Delete from Console Storage |
Local save files for the selected PS5 or PS4 game | The installed game, unless you delete it separately |
For the goal of reclaiming space while keeping GTA V progress, stay in Games and Apps. Do not select GTA V in Upload or Delete from Console Storage. PlayStation states that deleting a purchased game or application does not remove your right to download it again from your game library. That reassurance applies to the purchase and installation, not to a local save that you intentionally delete.

- Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
- With capacities ranging from 1TB to 4TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
- Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
- Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
- Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
“Don’t worry, you won’t lose access to any deleted games or applications — you can re-download your purchases from your game library whenever you like.”
Deleting the installation can therefore be a safe space-saving action, but it is not a substitute for a save backup. If a local save is removed or corrupted, reinstalling GTA V does not automatically recreate that progress.
How to delete GTA V without deleting its save
- Inspect the storage breakdown. Open
Settings > Storageand review Console Storage. This shows whether Games and Apps, saved data, captures or another category is consuming the space. - Open the game list. Choose
Console Storage > Games and Apps. Locate GTA V in the list. You can also use this screen for other large games and applications you no longer need installed. - Choose the installation data. Select GTA V, then choose Delete. If the console shows Customize, review the listed components first. PlayStation allows portions such as unused add-ons to be managed separately, so you may be able to remove optional content instead of the entire installation.
- Confirm the deletion. Accept the prompt and wait for the storage calculation to refresh. The game icon may remain available in your library, but its local installation files will no longer occupy console game storage.
- Leave saved data untouched. Do not navigate to
Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5/PS4) > Upload or Delete from Console Storageto finish the process. That is the menu that can remove the GTA V save itself.
When you want to play again, open your game library, select GTA V and choose the download option. You will need to download the installation and updates again; the amount of time and space required depends on the current game files and patches.
Back up or verify a save before making broader changes
Deleting only the installation does not require a backup to preserve the local save. A backup is still sensible if you are troubleshooting corruption, moving between consoles, or considering any action in the saved-data menu.
PS5 saves and PlayStation Plus cloud storage
PS5 saved data can be stored in PlayStation Plus cloud storage. A PlayStation Plus membership is required for that cloud-save feature. If GTA V appears in the saved-data upload screen, verify that the newest Story Mode progress has uploaded before deleting or replacing local data. Cloud storage in this context is for saves; it does not store a complete PS5 game installation for instant play.

Why a USB stick is not a PS5-save backup
PS5 saves cannot be copied from the console to a USB drive through the normal saved-data tools. PS4 saves can be copied to a USB drive, but that rule does not extend to PS5 saves. A USB drive formatted as PS5 extended storage is intended for game installations, not for exporting PS5 saved data.
Check the account and the save slot
GTA V can contain multiple Story Mode save slots. Before any migration or deletion involving saved data, start the game and confirm that the expected character and latest progress load under the same PlayStation account you plan to use after reinstalling. This simple check helps avoid protecting an older slot while assuming it is the current one.

Deleting an installation is only one route. The following choices differ in cost, playability and whether they handle saves.
| Route | Internal game space recovered | Can play a PS5 game directly from there? | Saved-data support | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Delete GTA V or another installation | Yes, by removing its files from Console Storage | No, because the game is no longer installed | Leaves saved data alone when deletion is performed in Games and Apps | No purchase or membership; purchased games can be downloaded again from the library |
| USB extended storage | Yes, when installations are moved off the internal drive | PS5 games must be copied back to Console Storage or M.2 SSD before playing; PS4 games can run directly from USB extended storage | Not a PS5-save backup location | Compatible external USB drive; formatting erases its existing contents |
| M.2 SSD storage | Yes, by adding internal game capacity | Yes, for games installed on the added M.2 storage | Provides game storage, not a separate PS5-save export method | Optional compatible M.2 SSD that meets PlayStation’s current hardware requirements |
| PlayStation Plus cloud saves | No; it does not hold game installations | No; cloud storage here is for saved data | Stores eligible PS5 and PS4 saves in the cloud | PlayStation Plus membership |
Moving GTA V to USB extended storage
A compatible USB extended-storage drive can hold the GTA V installation and other games, which frees space on the internal console drive without deleting the installation. Formatting the drive as extended storage erases all existing contents, so copy anything important from that drive before formatting it.
- Connect the compatible USB drive to the PS5 and follow the console’s format prompt if it has not already been prepared as extended storage.
- Open
Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps. - Select GTA V, choose the move option and select the USB extended-storage destination.
- Wait for the transfer to finish before disconnecting the drive. The game remains installed, but a PS5 version cannot run directly from USB extended storage; copy it back to Console Storage or an M.2 SSD before launching it.
PS4 games are different: a PS4 version can be played directly from USB extended storage. Check which GTA V version you own and intend to use before planning around that behavior.

When the drive is attached and the console is on, eject it through Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage > Safely Remove from PS5. Disconnecting without using the safe-removal command can risk data loss or corruption.
Adding an M.2 SSD instead
An M.2 SSD adds internal game capacity and can run PS5 games installed on it. The drive must meet PlayStation’s current size, interface, cooling and performance requirements. Because compatibility requirements can change, check the current PlayStation hardware guidance before buying; do not assume that every retail M.2 drive will work.
Installing an M.2 SSD expands where game installations can live. It does not create a USB-style method for copying PS5 saves, and it does not replace cloud-save or console-transfer procedures when you need a backup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.GTA V Story Mode migration warnings
Freeing storage on one PS5 is different from migrating GTA V Story Mode progress between generations. Rockstar’s migration guidance describes a one-save upload per console. The uploaded save can be updated on Rockstar’s service until a download is initiated, and it remains available for download for 90 days under the guidance updated May 1, 2024.
After the save is downloaded to a PS5, the described migration flow does not allow further uploads from that account. Story Mode progress on PS4 and PS5 is then saved separately rather than continuously synchronized. If you continue playing on PS4 after migration, that later PS4 progress will not automatically appear in the PS5 save.

Before deleting data from an older console or removing a local installation during a move, confirm that the intended save was uploaded, that the migration completed, and that the PS5 copy opens with the expected progress. A migration upload is a transfer event, not an ongoing backup system.
GTA Online migration is a separate process
GTA Online profile migration does not serve as a backup for GTA V Story Mode saves. Rockstar states that cross-generation GTA Online progress does not synchronize after migration. The migrated profile remains on the prior PS4 or Xbox One generation as well, but progress made on one generation should not be treated as a live mirror of the other.
Use the PS5 storage menus for installation management and the appropriate saved-data or migration workflow for the type of progress you are protecting. Do not delete a Story Mode save because an Online profile migration succeeded; they are separate data and account processes.
Troubleshooting common mistakes
“I deleted GTA V and my progress is gone.”
First check whether you deleted the installation or the saved data. Reinstalling the game from the library restores game files, but it cannot restore a save that was removed from console storage unless a valid cloud copy, PS4 USB copy or completed migration exists. Open the saved-data menu and verify the GTA V entries before taking any further action.

“The game is still taking space after I removed it.”
Return to Settings > Storage and inspect Games and Apps, saved data and captures separately. GTA V may have more than one entry, such as a PS4 and PS5 version, updates or add-ons. Use Customize where offered to identify optional components, and check that you deleted the intended version rather than only one related item.
“My PS5 game will not start from the USB drive.”
That is expected for PS5 games on USB extended storage. Move or copy the game back to Console Storage or an installed M.2 SSD, then launch it from that location. A PS4 game can be played directly from the USB extended-storage drive.
“I unplugged the drive and now the console reports an error.”
Reconnect the drive, allow the PS5 to recognize it, and use Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage > Safely Remove from PS5 before disconnecting it again. Do not format the drive unless you have copied off data you still need, because formatting erases its contents.
Quick Recap
Before you press Delete: a GTA V checklist
- Confirm that you are in
Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, not the saved-data deletion screen. - Check whether you need the PS4 version, PS5 version, updates or optional add-ons later.
- Load GTA V under the correct account and verify the newest Story Mode slot if the progress is important.
- If you are changing saved data or migrating between generations, verify a PlayStation Plus cloud upload, PS4 USB copy or completed migration where applicable.
- Remember that PlayStation Plus cloud storage holds saves, while USB extended storage and M.2 SSD storage hold game installations.
- If using USB extended storage, safely remove it before unplugging and move PS5 games back before attempting to play them.
- Keep GTA Online migration decisions separate from Story Mode save protection.
