Short answer: PS5 Slim is a smaller, lighter redesign of the PS5, not a faster-generation console. Choose the disc-equipped Slim if you use physical games or Blu-ray/DVD movies; choose Slim Digital if you buy entirely from the PlayStation Store and want the smallest, lightest console. An original PS5 that works well does not need replacement for gaming performance alone. Upgrade for the Slim’s reduced size, a newer warranty, better condition, or (on the Slim disc model) the 1TB nominal SSD.
PS5 Slim vs. original PS5 at a glance
The model names hide important edition and revision differences. The figures below compare Sony’s CFI-1200 original-form-factor reference with the CFI-21XX Slim family. They are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements, and other revisions can differ.
| Buying factor | Original PS5 (CFI-1200 reference) | PS5 Slim (CFI-21XX reference) | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disc-model storage | 825GB custom SSD | 1TB custom SSD | The Slim disc model has greater nominal capacity. System software reserves part of either drive, so usable space is lower. |
| Digital-model storage | Varies by original revision; Sony’s current US listing describes an 825GB Digital Edition | 825GB custom SSD | Do not apply the Slim disc model’s 1TB figure to the Slim Digital Edition. |
| Disc drive | Integrated on the disc model; absent on the digital model | Integrated on the disc model; detachable drive supported on the compatible Slim Digital Edition | A digital Slim can become a disc console, but the drive is a separate purchase and must be paired online. |
| Disc-model dimensions | About 390 × 104 × 260mm | About 358 × 96 × 216mm | The Slim occupies less shelf space. |
| Disc-model mass | About 3.9kg | About 3.1kg | The Slim is easier to move and handle. |
| Vertical placement | Original CFI-1000 setup uses its base | Slim CFI-2000 requires a separate vertical stand | Budget for the stand if you want the Slim upright. |
| Gaming capability | PS5 platform features | PS5 platform features in a smaller chassis | There is no cited basis to expect higher frame rates or better graphics from Slim. |
Sony describes the redesign this way: “The same features that make PS5 the best place to play have been packed into a smaller form factor, with a 1TB SSD for more internal storage.” Read Sony’s current feature and edition information on the PS5 product page.
What changed in the PS5 Slim?
A smaller, lighter chassis
The most obvious difference is physical. For the cited disc models, CFI-21XX Slim is approximately 358 × 96 × 216mm and 3.1kg, compared with approximately 390 × 104 × 260mm and 3.9kg for the CFI-1200 original-form-factor reference. That is a substantial reduction for a media cabinet, desk, or frequent move between rooms.
#1 Best Overall
- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
The Slim Digital Edition is smaller and lighter still: approximately 358 × 80 × 216mm and 2.5kg in Sony’s CFI-21XX manual. Adding the optional drive changes the physical arrangement, so measure the space around the complete configuration rather than the bare digital console. Sony’s product page also describes the Slim as having more than 30% reduced volume and 18% and 24% reduced weight versus previous models. Because that FAQ does not identify one exact predecessor, do not treat those percentages as a precise comparison with every original PS5 revision.
Leave ventilation clearance around whichever model you buy. The published dimensions describe the console itself, not extra room for cables, airflow, or access to the power button and USB ports.
Storage depends on the edition
The CFI-21XX disc Slim has a nominal 1TB custom SSD. The cited Slim Digital model has 825GB. Sony’s CFI-1200 safety guide lists 825GB for the original-form-factor reference. These labels are not the amount available for games: system functions reserve capacity, and the operating system reports a smaller usable figure.
For a new buyer, the extra nominal space on the disc Slim can postpone deleting games. It is not a speed advantage, and it does not make games render at higher resolution. Storage needs also depend on download sizes, patches, captures, and how many games you keep installed. Both families support expansion with a commercially available M.2 SSD that meets Sony’s requirements; use the current requirements and installation procedure in the CFI-21XX instruction manual rather than assuming any particular retail drive will work.
Disc hardware is supplied differently
On an original disc PS5 and a disc-equipped Slim, the Ultra HD Blu-ray drive is built into the console. Digital editions have no drive in the box. The Slim Digital Edition can accept Sony’s detachable drive, but this accessory is designed for the Slim CFI-2000 family (and PS5 Pro), not the original CFI-1000 chassis. Confirm the model code on the console or box before ordering.
The detachable drive is a separate purchase. Sony requires an internet connection during setup so the drive can pair with the console; plan for that connection even if you intend to play offline afterward. The drive supports the disc formats and attachment procedure described in Sony’s Disc Drive Instruction Manual.
Feet and vertical stands
The Slim includes horizontal feet for tabletop placement. Sony says its official vertical stand is sold separately, so an upright Slim requires that additional accessory. Sony’s accessories information lists the stand as compatible with the original CFI-1000 group and Slim CFI-2000 group; check the exact model family before buying. The original CFI-1000 installation uses its supplied base, while later original revisions can have different packaging and support arrangements.

Use Sony’s PS5 setup guidance for the feet or base required by your model. Never balance a console vertically without the appropriate support: stability and airflow depend on the correct hardware.
Is the PS5 Slim more powerful?
No performance upgrade is established by Sony’s published comparison. Slim is a chassis redesign that retains the PS5 platform’s core features. The smaller body does not, by itself, mean higher frame rates, faster loading, better ray tracing, or improved image quality. A game that targets a particular performance mode on an original PS5 should be understood as targeting the same PS5 platform on Slim, subject to the game’s own updates and display settings.
No independent benchmark, noise test, temperature comparison, or reliability study is represented here. Avoid buying Slim on the assumption that it is quieter, cooler, or more durable. Those outcomes can vary with room temperature, dust, cabinet ventilation, software, and individual unit condition.
Which PS5 Slim edition should you buy?
Choose the Slim with an integrated disc drive when:
- You own PS5 or PS4 discs and want to keep using them.
- You buy or borrow boxed games, trade or resell physical copies, or use second-hand discs.
- You watch 4K Blu-ray, Blu-ray, or DVD movies on the console.
- You want the least complicated path to physical media: the drive is already installed and does not need online pairing.
The integrated-drive model is also the clearer choice when the price gap to the digital model plus detachable drive is small. Compare the complete checkout totals rather than treating the digital console’s sticker price as the final cost.

Choose the Slim Digital Edition when:
- You buy every game digitally and do not need disc movies.
- You value the smallest listed footprint and lowest listed mass.
- You are comfortable adding the detachable drive later only if your habits change.
Remember that the cited Slim Digital model has 825GB, not the 1TB associated with the Slim disc model. If you later add the official drive, reserve space and budget for the accessory and complete its internet pairing during installation.
Keep your original PS5 when:
- It meets your storage, placement, and media needs.
- You are considering an upgrade solely for faster or better-looking games.
- The cost of selling or replacing it would exceed the practical benefit of a smaller body, newer warranty, or additional storage.
An original owner has a reason to change when the console is damaged, out of warranty, difficult to place, short on usable storage, or worth replacing under a favorable trade-in or resale offer. Those are ownership and convenience decisions, not a generational performance decision.
How original PS5 model numbers affect the comparison
“Original PS5” describes several hardware revisions. The dimensions and mass commonly quoted for it are often from one model group, not every unit sold since launch. The figures in this comparison use Sony’s CFI-1200 safety guide as the original reference, while the vertical-stand compatibility note includes the CFI-1000 group.

Find the CFI code on the console’s label or packaging before using a specification. On a listing, look for the full model group rather than relying only on “disc,” “digital,” or “launch edition.” This prevents three common mistakes:

What the Slim purchase really costs
Sony’s US purchase page currently describes a 1TB disc console and an 825GB all-digital model, but directs shoppers to retailers instead of publishing one fixed console price. Prices, stock, bundles, promotions, and included accessories can change by retailer and date. Check the live listing through Sony’s PS5 purchase page and compare like-for-like packages.
Use this checklist at checkout:
- Edition: integrated disc drive or digital console.
- Storage: 1TB for the cited Slim disc model versus 825GB for the cited Slim Digital model.
- Drive: included, detachable accessory sold separately, or not compatible.
- Bundle contents: included games, controller count, cables, and promotional items.
- Stand: whether a vertical stand is needed and whether it is included.
- Warranty and returns: coverage, region, seller, and return window.
- Model code: confirm the CFI family printed on the listing or box.
Do not quote a single “current PS5 Slim price” without naming the region, date, edition, and bundle. The official page does not establish a universal US price.
Can you add a disc drive to the PS5 Slim Digital Edition?
Yes, if the console is from the compatible Slim CFI-2000 family. The drive is not a universal PS5 accessory and does not fit the original CFI-1000 chassis. You also need internet access during setup for pairing.
- Check the console’s CFI model code and confirm it is a compatible Slim family unit.
- Buy the official detachable drive intended for that family; compare the accessory’s current price with the price difference between the digital and integrated-drive consoles.
- Power down the console and attach the drive exactly as shown in Sony’s drive manual.
- Connect the console to the internet and complete the on-screen pairing process.
- Test a supported game or movie disc before discarding the packaging, so a return or exchange remains possible if the accessory is defective.
If the drive is not recognized, first recheck the model family, physical seating, system software, and internet connection. Do not force a drive designed for another PS5 revision.
Storage expansion and capacity planning
Nominal capacity is only one part of the storage decision. A game’s installed size can grow with patches, downloadable content, and captured video. The Slim disc model’s 1TB label gives it more headroom than the cited 825GB models, but all consoles eventually benefit from expansion for large libraries.
Sony’s Slim manual supports installation of a commercially available M.2 SSD that meets specified interface, size, heatsink, and performance requirements. Requirements can change, so consult the current official manual and support instructions before buying. Back up important saves and follow the installation sequence; an incompatible drive can fail to format or be rejected by the console.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming “Slim” means faster
The redesign’s documented benefits are size, mass, edition-dependent storage, and drive flexibility. Treat game performance as the same PS5 platform unless Sony or a game developer provides a specific, separate enhancement.
Comparing a digital console with a disc bundle
A digital Slim may look cheaper until you add the detachable drive, vertical stand, shipping, or a bundle’s included game. Compare total costs for the exact contents you will use.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Using the wrong storage number
The 1TB figure belongs to the cited Slim disc model. The cited Slim Digital model and original CFI-1200 reference are 825GB nominal. Check the edition and CFI group in the listing.
Forgetting the stand
The Slim’s supplied horizontal feet do not replace the optional vertical stand. If your shelf requires upright placement, add the compatible stand before checkout and verify its model support.
Buying a drive for an original PS5
The detachable drive is for the compatible Slim CFI-2000 family and PS5 Pro, not the original CFI-1000 chassis. An original digital console cannot be converted with that accessory.
Expecting laboratory certainty
Manufacturer dimensions and weights are useful for fit and handling, but they do not establish real-world noise, temperature, or reliability differences. Those depend on the individual console and environment.

A practical decision path
- Start with media: if you own physical games or discs, choose an integrated-drive Slim or price a compatible Slim drive into the decision.
- Check the space: compare the published dimensions plus ventilation and cable clearance. Slim is the better fit where depth or weight is restricted.
- Check capacity: choose the 1TB Slim disc model when the extra nominal space matters; do not assume the digital model is 1TB.
- Check accessories: include a vertical stand if upright placement is required.
- For an existing owner, identify the reason: condition, warranty, storage, and footprint justify an upgrade more clearly than performance.
- Verify the live offer: confirm edition, CFI family, drive inclusion, bundle contents, warranty, and total checkout cost on the day you buy.
Bottom line for most buyers
For a new purchase, the disc-equipped PS5 Slim is the most flexible choice: it is smaller and lighter than the cited original reference, includes the drive, and carries a 1TB nominal SSD. Slim Digital is sensible for an all-digital library and the smallest footprint, provided you accept 825GB and the cost and setup requirements of a future detachable drive. Keep a functioning original PS5 unless its size, condition, warranty, or storage materially limits you. The Slim is a more convenient form factor, not a performance upgrade.
