The best PS5 settings depend on your TV or monitor, room, audio device, supported game features, and physical comfort. Start at Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output to confirm what your display supports, then compare picture, audio, accessibility, and controller options on your actual setup. There is no single HDR, audio, or feedback value that is best for everyone.

Start with the PS5 output your display supports

PlayStation 5 automatically detects the connected TV or monitor’s capabilities and selects the best available resolution. Treat that automatic choice as your starting point rather than forcing a value copied from another setup. TV models, firmware, HDMI inputs, cables, and game support can all change what is available.

Check output information and available modes

  1. Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
  2. Select Screen and Video.
  3. Open Video Output.
  4. Review the output information shown for the connected display, then inspect the resolution and other options that the console makes available.
  5. Change one setting at a time and compare the result in a game or video you know well.

Do not assume that a higher number, HDR, a particular RGB range, or a high refresh-rate option will look better on every screen. Use the display’s own on-screen guidance and picture controls, and judge the result from your normal viewing position. Specific HDR calibration values cannot be applied universally across TV models.

If a high-resolution picture is missing

When a supported signal does not appear, Sony’s support guidance is to connect the PS5 directly to the TV or display, confirm that the TV is on the correct HDMI input, check the display’s firmware, and try another HDMI cable if picture or sound problems continue. This is a troubleshooting path, not a reason to buy an expensive cable by default. If an AV receiver, switch, or capture device sits between the console and display, bypass it temporarily to isolate the cause.

In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
  • Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
  • Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
  • DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
  • PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
What to compare What determines the better choice
Resolution or refresh option The modes your display and HDMI connection actually support, plus whether the game supports them.
HDR behavior Whether the display supports HDR correctly and whether the resulting image looks natural in your room.
RGB or range option Correct black-level matching between the PS5 and display; use the display’s instructions rather than a universal value.
Automatic versus manual output Automatic is the safest baseline; manual changes are useful only when you understand the display’s supported modes.

Use accessibility settings to improve legibility and picture usability

Accessibility controls are not limited to specialist situations. They can make menus, subtitles, and moving scenes easier to read, or reduce visual strain. Open Settings > Accessibility and review the options that match your needs.

Picture and text options

  • Color correction: Adjusts how colors are presented for different color-vision needs.
  • Text size and bold text: Makes system text easier to read from your usual seating distance.
  • High contrast: Increases separation between interface elements and their backgrounds.
  • Reduce motion: Limits certain interface movement that can be distracting or uncomfortable.
  • Zoom: Enlarges parts of the screen when small interface details are difficult to see.
  • Color inversion: Reverses screen colors, but it also turns HDR off. If HDR disappears after enabling inversion, that interaction is expected.

Make changes while viewing the menus and a game scene, not only a settings page. A high-contrast or enlarged interface can improve navigation while making some game imagery less natural, so keep the option that solves your problem with the fewest side effects.

Captions, screen reader, and mono audio

The same Accessibility area includes captions, screen-reader controls, and mono-audio options. Captions can improve dialogue clarity when room noise or hearing difficulty makes speech hard to follow. A screen reader can read interface text aloud. Mono audio combines left and right channels when stereo separation is a barrier. Availability and behavior can vary by language, game, and media application.

Tune TV-speaker audio with a measurement and a direct comparison

For built-in TV speakers, go to Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (TV). Sony’s setup process asks you to measure from your normal listening position. The measurement is tied to the room and seating arrangement, so perform it where you actually play rather than standing beside the television.

Measure and compare

  1. Sit in your usual gaming position, facing the TV.
  2. Start the measurement process under 3D Audio (TV) and follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. Listen to familiar game scenes with 3D audio enabled.
  4. Switch to stereo and replay the same scenes.
  5. Keep the mode that gives you clearer dialogue, more convincing placement, or less listening fatigue on your equipment.

Neither mode is automatically superior. Room shape, speaker placement, the TV’s processing, and your own hearing determine the result. If you move the TV or your seat, rearrange furniture, or substantially change the room, measure again.

When 3D audio is difficult to hear

Clear obstructions from the TV speakers and disable the television’s own sound-processing effects if they interfere with the PS5’s 3D presentation. Extra virtual-surround, dialogue, or equalizer modes in the TV can alter the signal before you decide whether the PS5 setting works for you. Test with those effects off first, then add back only the processing you prefer.

Create a headphone profile or use a preset

With headphones connected, open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones). The PS5 lets you respond to sounds presented at different positions and angles to create a personalized profile. You can also choose from five preset settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Headphone option Best way to decide Trade-off
Personalized profile Use it when you want the processing shaped around your own responses and your regular headphones. It takes longer to create and may need to be redone if your listening setup changes significantly.
One of five presets Choose the preset that makes positional cues and voices easiest for you to follow. A preset may not match your hearing as closely as a personalized profile.
3D audio off Use it as a reference and when unprocessed stereo sounds more natural. You give up the virtual 3D presentation.

Replay the same game section with 3D audio on and off before deciding. A setting that emphasizes directional effects may make some sounds easier to place while making music or voices feel less natural. Your preference is the relevant test.

Explore Audio Focus when you need quieter sounds emphasized

Sony describes Audio Focus as emphasizing quieter sounds in certain frequency ranges while using headphones. It is intended for games, voice chat, and media. The exact controls and availability can depend on the console software and context, so open the option when it appears and test it with your own content rather than expecting a guaranteed result.

Use Dolby Atmos only when your HDMI equipment supports it

If you already use a compatible Dolby Atmos-enabled soundbar, TV, or home-theater system over HDMI, the PS5 can render Tempest 3D AudioTech to that equipment. The setting path is:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Sound.
  3. Choose Audio Output.
  4. Open Audio Format (Priority).
  5. Select Dolby Atmos.

This option depends on compatible HDMI hardware and its connection configuration. It is not required to improve TV-speaker or headphone sound, and it should not be enabled merely because the label sounds more advanced. Compare it with the other output formats on the equipment you actually own.

Adjust DualSense feedback for comfort, not a supposed performance boost

Open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) to change controller behavior. Available controls include controller speaker volume, vibration intensity, trigger-effect intensity, indicator brightness, communication method, and press-and-hold delay.

PlayStation DualSense® Wireless Controller – Marvel’s Wolverine Battle Yellow Limited Edition
  • Bring gaming worlds to life, Feel your in-game actions and environment simulated through haptic feedback (Available when feature is supported by game)
  • Experience varying force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers (Available when feature is supported by game)
  • Find your voice, share your passion, chat online with the built in microphone (Available when feature is supported by game)
  • Connect a headset directly via the 3.5mm jack
  • Multi-device connectivity, connect using a USB Type-C cable or Bluetooth technology and easily play on more devices

A practical comfort adjustment

  1. Open Controller (General) and reduce Vibration Intensity one step.
  2. Play long enough to notice whether the lower level reduces distraction or hand fatigue.
  3. Adjust Trigger Effect Intensity separately; do not assume vibration and adaptive triggers feel the same.
  4. Disable either feature if you prefer a completely neutral feel, then restore it later for games where you enjoy the effect.
  5. Use Controller Speaker Volume, Indicator Brightness, or Press and Hold Delay to remove other small annoyances.

Trigger effects work only in games that support them. Reducing them is an individual comfort choice, not a rule that improves aim, reaction time, or frame rate. Test during the games and sessions that cause discomfort, because a short menu check may not reveal fatigue.

Health warning from Sony’s instruction manual

The PlayStation 5 CFI-21XX Instruction Manual states: “Do not use the vibration or trigger effect function if you have any ailment or injury to body parts such as the bones, joints, or muscles of the hand or arm or that may be affected by this vibration function.” The manual says these features can be disabled under Settings > Accessories. Follow medical advice for an existing condition rather than trying to work around pain with a small setting change.

Use controller accessibility options when the default layout is the problem

Under Settings > Accessibility, review controller-related options such as custom button assignments. Remapping can place frequently used actions where they are easier to reach or allow a different grip. Check the game’s own control settings as well, because some titles add actions or layouts that the system-level assignment does not cover.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Haptic feedback during console navigation is a separate accessibility option. It applies to console navigation only, not necessarily to in-game effects, and is available for DualSense, DualSense Edge, and PS VR2 Sense controllers. Change it independently from game vibration and trigger intensity.

A comparison checklist for your own setup

Area Compare these choices Keep the option that…
Display Automatically detected output versus a supported manual mode; HDR on a compatible display; legibility options such as text size and contrast. Matches the display’s documented capabilities and looks comfortable from your normal seat.
TV audio Stereo versus measured 3D audio, with the TV’s extra processing temporarily disabled. Makes voices and important effects easiest to hear without harshness or fatigue.
Headphones Personalized 3D profile, one of five presets, and 3D audio off. Gives you the most useful positional information and natural speech or music.
HDMI audio Dolby Atmos versus the other formats available on compatible equipment. Works correctly through your soundbar, TV, or home-theater connection and sounds preferable.
Controller Different vibration and trigger intensities, custom button assignments, and navigation haptics. Lets you play without distraction, pain, or unnecessary strain.

Fix changes that seem to make things worse

  • HDR vanished: Check whether Color Inversion is enabled; that accessibility feature turns HDR off.
  • The image is blank or unstable: Confirm the correct TV input, connect the PS5 directly to the display, update display firmware, and test another HDMI cable.
  • 3D TV audio sounds unclear: Remeasure from the normal seat, remove obstructions from the speakers, and disable the TV’s own sound effects before comparing again.
  • Headphone positioning sounds unnatural: Compare the personalized profile, all five presets, and 3D audio off using the same game scene.
  • Trigger effects are missing: Confirm that the game supports them; the system setting cannot add support to a title that does not implement the feature.
  • A setting is unavailable: Feature availability can vary by game, connected device, language, region, and PS5 software version. Menu labels can also change with system updates.

Change one variable at a time and keep notes of the previous value. That makes it possible to return to a known-good configuration instead of trying to remember several simultaneous changes.

Recommended order for a first-time setup

  1. Check Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and confirm the detected display capabilities.
  2. Resolve direct-connection, input, firmware, or cable problems before judging picture quality.
  3. Set accessibility options for text, contrast, motion, captions, or color needs.
  4. Configure and compare TV stereo and measured 3D audio, or build a headphone profile and compare it with presets.
  5. Enable Dolby Atmos only if your HDMI audio equipment is compatible and the result is preferable.
  6. Lower vibration and trigger effects if they distract or cause discomfort, then consider button remapping and navigation-haptic settings.
  7. Recheck the setup after moving the display, seating position, furniture, headphones, or audio hardware.

These settings are tools for matching the PS5 to your equipment and body, not universal upgrades. The most reliable choice is the one that your display renders correctly, your audio system reproduces clearly, and you can use comfortably for the length of a real play session.
