Use Rest Mode when you want the PS5 to stay ready for background downloads, updates, remote wake, cloud syncing or USB charging. Choose Turn Off PS5 when you want a complete shutdown and the lowest possible standby use while you are away. Neither option is universally best. Rest Mode is a configurable low-power state, not a shutdown, and every feature you leave active affects its power consumption.

What is the difference between PS5 Rest Mode and turning it off?

Sony describes three PS5 power states: on, Rest Mode and off. In Rest Mode, the console remains on at reduced power. It can maintain selected network, storage and USB functions while the screen is off. When you select Turn Off PS5, the console completes a shutdown and those background functions stop until you start it again.

The practical distinction is readiness versus isolation. Rest Mode can finish a download, install an update, charge a controller or respond to a network wake request. A fully powered-off PS5 cannot perform those jobs. In return, shutdown avoids the energy used by Rest Mode features and leaves the console in the simplest state for long periods of disuse.

Rest Mode behavior is configurable under the system power-saving menus. If you enable several functions, the console consumes more energy than it would with those functions disabled. Sony’s support guidance states: “The more features you enable, the more power your console consumes while in rest mode.”

PS5 Rest Mode vs. Turn Off PS5: a side-by-side decision

Choice Best fit What remains available Trade-offs
Rest Mode You want the console ready when you return, with selected background features Configured downloads and updates, network wake, USB power, cloud synchronization and a suspended game or app, where supported The console is still on at low power; enabled features increase consumption and must be configured correctly
Turn Off PS5 You want a complete shutdown, minimum standby use or a long period without using the console None until the console is started again Downloads, updates, remote wake, charging and other Rest Mode functions stop

Pick Rest Mode if convenience features matter more than eliminating standby use. Pick shutdown if the PS5 will sit unused for an extended period, you are minimizing every watt, or you do not need it reachable over the network. A nightly rule is unnecessary: the right choice depends on which functions you actually use.

What Rest Mode can do while you are away

Download games and updates

A PS5 can download game data and system or game updates in Rest Mode when it is allowed to stay online. This is useful for large files that would otherwise delay play. Automatic downloads and installations are separate choices, so review both if you want the console to prepare a game without prompting you later. Sony notes that some updates can still require your approval, even when Rest Mode downloading is enabled.

Wake over the network

Rest Mode allows a PlayStation App or Remote Play connection to wake the console, but only when the network-wake setting is enabled. Without that setting, the console will not respond to a remote start request while resting. Network wake is valuable if you begin Remote Play away from the console or want to start a download session remotely; it is unnecessary if you never use those functions.

Charge a controller from the console

The PS5 can supply power through its USB ports during Rest Mode. You can leave USB power on continuously, select a time-limited option where your model offers one, or disable it. A separate charging station is a reason some owners disable console USB power: the console does not need to remain available merely to charge a controller elsewhere. Charging behavior and the available time choices can vary by hardware group and system software.

Synchronize saves with cloud storage

PS5 save auto-sync can run when a game closes or when the console enters Rest Mode. Internet connectivity and the relevant automatic-update or auto-sync settings must be enabled. Cloud storage requires a PlayStation Plus membership; Rest Mode by itself does not provide cloud storage. If you rely on a particular save being available on another PS5, verify that synchronization has completed before shutting down or disconnecting the console.

Keep a game or app suspended

Rest Mode can preserve a suspended game or app so that you can resume quickly. This is a convenience feature rather than a substitute for saving. A system update, an error or a full shutdown can end the suspended session, so save progress normally before leaving a game for a long time.

Does PS5 Rest Mode use a lot of electricity?

Rest Mode uses less energy than leaving the console fully on, but it does not use zero energy. Sony’s support material says that when Rest Mode features are enabled, the console does not automatically reduce consumption below 0.5 W. Sony’s environmental guidance describes gameplay suspension at “0.5 W or less.” These statements are thresholds and general guidance, not a claim that every PS5 model and configuration continuously measures exactly 0.5 W.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Actual consumption depends on the PS5 hardware revision, the functions enabled, network activity, USB charging and how often the console is downloading or installing data. The official material does not establish a universal daily or annual electricity cost. To calculate your own cost, you would need a meter reading for your model and configuration, the number of hours spent in each state and your electricity tariff.

If minimum standby consumption is your priority, turn off features you do not use or shut the console down. If the convenience of automatic updates or remote access is worth a small standby load, configure only those functions rather than leaving every Rest Mode option enabled.

How to configure Rest Mode correctly

Enable internet access for downloads and updates

  1. Open Settings on the PS5 home screen.
  2. Select System, then Power Saving.
  3. Open Features Available in Rest Mode.
  4. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
  5. In the download and installation settings, enable automatic downloads or automatic installation only if you want those actions to occur without returning to the console.

The internet setting is the prerequisite for Rest Mode downloads. If it is off, the PS5 cannot fetch new data while resting. If an update still requests confirmation, that is consistent with Sony’s warning that some updates need approval.

Allow Remote Play or the PlayStation App to wake the console

  1. Go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
  2. Enable Stay Connected to the Internet if it is not already on.
  3. Enable Enable Turning On PS5 from Network.
  4. Use the same PlayStation account and an appropriate network connection in the PlayStation App or Remote Play.

Both the Rest Mode state and the network-wake permission matter. Turning on only one of them will not provide reliable remote startup.

Choose how the USB ports receive power

  1. Open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
  2. Select the option for supplying power to USB ports.
  3. Choose continuous power, a supported time-limited option, or Do Not Supply Power, according to your charging routine.

Some current model groups include an Adaptive charging choice. The exact options can vary by PS5 revision, so use the labels shown on your console rather than assuming every model has the same menu.

Prepare cloud save synchronization

  1. Confirm that the PS5 can reach the internet in Rest Mode.
  2. Enable the system’s automatic update and save auto-sync or auto-upload settings.
  3. Make sure your account has PlayStation Plus if you need cloud storage.
  4. Close a game normally before leaving the console so its latest save can be queued for synchronization.

Cloud sync is conditional: a PS5 without internet access, without the relevant automatic settings or without PlayStation Plus cloud storage cannot provide the same backup behavior.

How to enter Rest Mode or shut the PS5 down

Enter Rest Mode

  1. Press the PS button on the DualSense controller.
  2. Select Power in the control center.
  3. Choose Enter Rest Mode.

Sony also documents pressing the console’s power button once as a way to enter Rest Mode. Do not hold the button unless you are following a shutdown or recovery procedure; a normal single press is the documented Rest Mode action.

Turn the PS5 off completely

  1. Press the PS button and open the control center.
  2. Select Power.
  3. Choose Turn Off PS5.
  4. Wait for the power indicator to stop flashing and turn off before disconnecting anything.

Turning off from the menu lets the console close processes and write data safely. Do not pull the AC plug while the indicator is lit or blinking. Sony warns that interrupting power in that state can cause data loss, corruption or damage to the console.

What the PS5 indicator light means

The CFI-7000-series quick-start documentation identifies the states this way:

  • White: the console is on.
  • Orange: the console is in Rest Mode.
  • Off: the console is fully off.

The indicator can flash while the PS5 is changing states. Treat a lit or blinking indicator as an instruction to wait, especially before unplugging the AC cable. Other hardware groups may use slightly different documentation or labels, so check the guide for your own model if the indicator behavior does not match these descriptions.

Which option fits common situations?

You want updates ready before your next session

Use Rest Mode with internet connectivity and automatic download settings enabled. The console can fetch data while you are away, although an update that requires approval will still wait for you.

You use Remote Play

Use Rest Mode and enable network wake. A fully powered-off PS5 cannot be started by the PlayStation App or Remote Play.

You charge a controller from the PS5 overnight

Use Rest Mode with USB power configured for the period your charging routine needs. If you already charge through another device, disable console USB power instead of keeping the PS5 resting solely for that purpose.

You are leaving home for a long trip

Turn the PS5 off completely unless you have a specific reason to keep it reachable. Shutdown removes the background functions that would otherwise remain active and is the clearer choice when the console will not be used for an extended time.

You are troubleshooting an error

Close the game or app, then perform a normal shutdown and restart. If the problem involves a failed download or suspended session, a restart can clear the current state; do not force power removal while the indicator is lit.

You want the lowest possible standby use every night

Turn off the PS5 from the Power menu. If you prefer Rest Mode’s quick resume, reduce its feature set first, because the enabled functions determine how much standby energy it uses.

Common problems and fixes

Downloads stop when the TV is off

  • Check Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode > Stay Connected to the Internet.
  • Verify that the PS5 is actually in Rest Mode, indicated by the appropriate light, rather than fully off.
  • Check whether the download is waiting for approval or storage space.
  • Confirm that the console’s network connection is working while it is on.

Remote Play cannot wake the console

  • Enable Enable Turning On PS5 from Network in the Rest Mode features menu.
  • Leave Stay Connected to the Internet enabled.
  • Make sure the PS5 is in Rest Mode, not powered off.
  • Use the same account and verify that the app or Remote Play device can reach the network.

The controller does not charge in Rest Mode

  • Open the USB power setting under Features Available in Rest Mode.
  • Replace Do Not Supply Power with a continuous or supported timed option.
  • Check the cable, connector and controller battery separately.
  • If your model offers Adaptive charging, select it only if it suits your charging pattern.

Cloud saves are not appearing on another console

  • Confirm PlayStation Plus cloud-storage eligibility.
  • Check internet access and automatic sync or upload settings.
  • Close the game so its current save can trigger synchronization.
  • Allow the PS5 time in Rest Mode to complete the upload before shutting it down.

The PS5 seems stuck while turning off

Wait while the indicator is flashing. If the console remains unresponsive, follow Sony’s recovery guidance for your model rather than repeatedly pulling the plug. AC power should be disconnected only after the indicator is off.

Model and software differences to keep in mind

Menu names and available options can change with system software and hardware group. The indicator descriptions above come from the CFI-7000-series quick-start instructions; they should not be treated as a promise that every earlier or later revision exposes identical choices. When a setting is missing, read the on-screen description and consult the documentation for that model instead of assuming the feature was removed or malfunctioning.

The same qualification applies to USB charging modes and automatic behavior. A setting such as Adaptive charging may appear on current model groups but not on another revision. The underlying decision remains the same: enable only the Rest Mode functions you need, and shut down when you need a complete off state.

Bottom line for your PS5

Rest Mode is the better everyday choice for owners who want automatic downloads, updates, remote wake, cloud synchronization or controller charging, provided those functions are enabled and configured intentionally. Turn Off PS5 is better when the console will be idle for a long period, when you are minimizing standby energy or when no background function is needed. Use the Power menu for either choice, and never disconnect AC power until the indicator is completely off.
