PS5 Rest Mode is a low-power state between leaving the console fully on and turning it off. When configured, it can keep the internet connection active for supported downloads and updates, supply power to USB ports for controller charging, and preserve selected background functions. It is not the same as shutting down, and it is not a guarantee that every download or accessory will keep working.

The important choices are in Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Enable only the functions you need, and never disconnect the AC cable while the console indicator is lit or blinking.

What PS5 Rest Mode is—and how it differs from on and off

PlayStation identifies three PS5 power states: on, Rest Mode, and off. Rest Mode reduces the console’s activity while allowing selected features to remain available. The orange indicator on the console means Rest Mode; a white indicator means the PS5 is on; no light means it is off.

State Indicator What it is suited for
On White Playing games, running apps, browsing the store, and performing any foreground task.
Rest Mode Orange Keeping selected network functions or USB power available while using less power than leaving the console on.
Off Off Fully shutting down before storage, transport, cleaning, or disconnecting AC power.

Rest Mode does not automatically preserve every activity. Network access and USB output are controlled independently, so a console can be in Rest Mode with internet access disabled, USB power disabled, or both. The feature settings determine what remains active.

Does the PS5 download games in Rest Mode?

Yes, provided the console remains connected to the internet and the relevant Rest Mode option is enabled. PlayStation’s current US support guidance says a connected PS5 in Rest Mode can download games purchased through the PlayStation App and pre-ordered games. The same support guidance points to automatic game and system-software updates.

Rest Mode cannot download anything without network access. It also cannot override a disabled feature, a disconnected network, a failed sign-in, or a download that requires action on the console. Treat the setting as permission for background network activity, not as an independent internet connection.

Enable internet access for Rest Mode downloads

  1. From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Choose Power Saving.
  4. Open Features Available in Rest Mode.
  5. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
  6. Leave the console connected to your network, then enter Rest Mode from the Control Center or by pressing the PS button and selecting the power option.

With this option enabled, PlayStation’s documented examples include games bought through the PlayStation App and pre-orders. Automatic updates are also described in the support documentation, but the console still needs a working network connection and enough local storage for the update.

If a download does not continue

  • Check Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and confirm Stay Connected to the Internet is on.
  • Verify that the PS5 is actually in Rest Mode: the indicator should be orange, not white.
  • Check the network connection in Settings > Network. A console that has lost Wi-Fi or wired access cannot continue a network download.
  • Confirm that the download is not paused, awaiting a license or sign-in, or blocked by insufficient storage.
  • If you want to test the setting, start a supported download while the console is on, put the PS5 into Rest Mode, and check the download status after waking it.

Turning off the internet option deliberately prevents these background network functions. That can be useful when you want the fewest enabled Rest Mode features, but it also means the PS5 will not perform the documented Rest Mode downloads and update checks.

How much power does PS5 Rest Mode use?

PlayStation does not publish a complete model-by-model wattage table in the cited support guidance. It states that, when Rest Mode features are enabled, the console does not automatically lower power consumption below 0.5 W when entering Rest Mode. The same guidance says that enabling more Rest Mode features increases consumption.

The 0.5 W figure is therefore a manufacturer statement about the console’s power-lowering behavior, not a universal measurement of the PS5’s continuous draw in every configuration. It is not presented as a third-party test, and it is not tied in the documentation to a particular PS5 hardware revision. Actual consumption can vary with the features enabled and the console’s state.

What changes power use in practice?

Setting choice Background capability Power implication
Internet connection on Supports the documented Rest Mode downloads and update checks. Uses more power than Rest Mode with network access disabled.
Internet connection off Prevents network activity while resting. Removes one enabled feature and can reduce Rest Mode consumption.
USB power off Does not supply power to charge a controller through the PS5. Uses less power than an enabled USB-power option.
USB power Always, 3 Hours, or Adaptive where available Allows controller or accessory charging for the selected period or charging behavior. Uses additional power while USB output is available.

There is no official per-setting figure in the cited material, so do not treat 0.5 W as the exact reading you will see from a meter or as a promise that every PS5 consumes the same amount. If minimizing standby energy is your priority, disable features you do not need and turn the console fully off when background functions are unnecessary.

Can I charge a controller while the PS5 is in Rest Mode?

Yes, if USB power is enabled for Rest Mode. PlayStation’s controller-charging instructions provide Always and 3 Hours choices. The Adaptive option is also listed for the CFI-2000 model group; it is not described as available on every PS5 model.

Set USB power for Rest Mode

  1. Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
  2. Select System, then Power Saving.
  3. Open Features Available in Rest Mode.
  4. Choose Supply Power to USB Ports.
  5. Select Always, 3 Hours, or, on supported CFI-2000 consoles, Adaptive.
  6. Connect a compatible controller with the included USB Type-C cable or another compatible USB-C cable, then put the console into Rest Mode.
USB option How it behaves When it fits
Off USB ports are not supplied power for Rest Mode charging. You do not need to charge from the console or want to minimize enabled features.
Always USB power remains available throughout Rest Mode. You want a controller connected for charging without a three-hour limit.
3 Hours USB power is available for three hours after the console enters Rest Mode. You want a time-limited charging window.
Adaptive On the CFI-2000 model group, the console adjusts charging behavior based on the controller’s remaining battery level. You have a supported model and want the console to optimize charging time.

A compatible USB-C cable can serve as a replacement or spare, but the presence of a USB-C connector alone does not establish compatibility with every cable or device. PlayStation’s instructions specifically refer to the included cable and compatible controller families.

How do I turn the PS5 off safely?

Use the normal shutdown command and wait for the indicator to go out before removing AC power. PlayStation’s safety instruction is explicit: Do not disconnect the AC power cord while the power indicator is lit or blinking. The PS5 Quick Start Guide gives the same rule: disconnect the AC cable from the electricity supply only when the indicator is off.

Normal shutdown from the Control Center

  1. Press the PS button on the controller to open the Control Center.
  2. Select Power.
  3. Choose Turn Off PS5.
  4. Wait until the indicator stops blinking and turns off completely.
  5. Only then disconnect the AC power cable, power strip, or wall outlet if you need to remove power.

Shutdown with the console button

You can also hold the PS5’s physical power button until it beeps. Wait for the indicator to turn off before disconnecting the cable. Do not mistake the orange light for a completed shutdown: orange means Rest Mode, so the console is still powered.

Why the waiting step matters

Disconnecting power while the indicator is lit or blinking can cause data loss, data corruption, or damage to the console. A blinking indicator means the transition is still in progress. If the console has just entered Rest Mode, wake it and use Control Center > Power > Turn Off PS5 if you need a complete shutdown.

Which Rest Mode settings should you choose?

There is no single best configuration. Pick the combination that matches whether you value background downloads, controller convenience, or the lowest possible standby activity.

Your priority Internet setting USB setting Power state to use
Download supported purchases and updates while away Stay Connected to the Internet: on Choose USB separately based on charging needs Rest Mode
Charge a controller for a limited period On or off, depending on download needs 3 Hours Rest Mode
Keep a supported CFI-2000 controller charging with adaptive behavior On or off, depending on download needs Adaptive Rest Mode
Use no background network or USB functions Off Off Turn Off PS5
Disconnect, move, or clean the console Not relevant Not relevant Turn Off PS5, then wait for the indicator to go out

PlayStation says that more enabled Rest Mode features increase consumption. Consequently, selecting only the internet or USB function you actually need is more precise than treating Rest Mode as an all-or-nothing setting.

Rest Mode safety checklist

  • Orange indicator: the PS5 is in Rest Mode, not fully off.
  • White indicator: the PS5 is on and actively running.
  • No indicator: the PS5 is off and has completed its shutdown.
  • Before expecting downloads, enable Stay Connected to the Internet and verify the network connection.
  • Before charging a controller, select a USB-power option other than Off; check whether Adaptive is available for your CFI-2000 model group.
  • Never pull the AC cable while the indicator is lit or blinking.
  • For a full shutdown, use Control Center > Power > Turn Off PS5 or hold the console power button until it beeps, then wait for the indicator to turn off.

What the official guidance covers

The current PlayStation US support page, accessed October 13, 2026, documents the three power states, Rest Mode feature settings, the 0.5 W power-lowering statement, supported download examples, and the AC-disconnection warning. PlayStation’s UK controller-charging page, also accessed October 13, 2026, documents USB charging choices and the CFI-2000 limitation for Adaptive. The Sony Interactive Entertainment PS5 Quick Start Guide for the CFI-10XXA documents indicator meanings and the requirement to disconnect AC power only when the indicator is off. A PlayStation Blog FAQ published November 9, 2020, describes Rest Mode’s original low-power concept; current support documentation is the better reference for present-day menu labels and options.

Those official materials do not provide independently measured energy results or an exact wattage for every PS5 model and setting combination. Use the 0.5 W statement as a qualified manufacturer description, not as a universal electricity-bill calculation.
