Short answer: a native PS5 remaster is usually a meaningful upgrade for image quality, frame-rate options, controller features, and loading. The original PS4 game running through backward compatibility is often the better value if you already own it, but its improvements are normally limited to faster loading, steadier performance, or dynamic-resolution headroom. It does not gain the remaster’s newly authored assets.

Because no game is specified, there is no honest universal claim for “how many seconds faster” loading will be or exactly how much sharper the image will look. Those results depend on the title, patch, display, mode, and storage location. Use the platform-level comparison below, then check the exact game’s upgrade notes before paying.

First, identify which PS5 experience you are comparing

The phrase “PS5 version” can describe two different products. Treating them as equivalent is the source of most misleading comparisons.

A native PS5 remaster

A native remaster is a separate PS5 build, either sold on its own or offered as an upgrade. The developer may replace or rework textures, geometry, lighting, shadows, effects, animation, audio, and streaming systems. It can also expose console-specific options such as a high-resolution Graphics mode, a 60-frame-per-second Performance mode, or, in some games and displays, an enhanced mode targeting up to 120 frames per second. PlayStation’s current overview describes these as examples of PS5 upgrades, not a specification every remaster must meet: PlayStation’s PS4 games upgraded for PS5 guide.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Some remasters add DualSense haptics, adaptive-trigger effects, 3D-audio tuning, photo modes, or other features that cannot be delivered by merely running the old executable. Added story chapters, characters, or modes are also possible, but they are publisher decisions rather than a standard part of the PS5 label.

The original PS4 game running on PS5

Backward compatibility runs the PS4 release on PS5. Sony says select PS4 titles can load faster and use Game Boost for higher or more stable frame rates. A title with an unlocked frame rate or dynamic resolution may also render at a higher resolution or hold its target more consistently because the PS5 has more processing headroom. The game’s assets, effects, and code are still fundamentally the PS4 version, however; Game Boost is not a replacement for a new art pass.

Sony’s launch guidance says more than 4,000 PS4 games were playable on PS5, with the overwhelming majority supported. Compatibility and behavior remain title-specific, so check the current PlayStation backward-compatibility list and support notes.

Graphics: what your eyes can actually gain

Assets and image quality

A remaster can supply higher-resolution textures, denser geometry, improved material detail, better shadows, upgraded reflections, volumetric effects, and lighting rebuilt for PS5 hardware. These changes remain visible even when both versions target the same frame rate because the remaster is drawing a different set of assets.

The PS4 build on PS5 generally preserves its original texture and lighting budgets. Dynamic resolution may climb toward the top of its original range when the console has spare capacity, but it cannot invent detail that was never authored. A clean 4K output signal therefore does not prove that the game is rendering native 4K or using PS5-quality assets.

Resolution modes

Many native upgrades let you choose between a mode that prioritizes resolution and one that prioritizes motion. Square Enix describes Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade’s “Graphics Mode” as prioritizing 4K high-resolution graphics and its “Performance Mode” as prioritizing smooth action at 60 frames per second in its 2021 announcement: Square Enix’s Intergrade announcement.

Labels and trade-offs differ by game. A “Graphics” setting may use a fixed or dynamic resolution, while “Performance” may reduce effects, shadows, or internal resolution to maintain its frame-rate target. Read the game’s own mode description rather than assuming that every Graphics mode is native 4K or every Performance mode is locked at 60 fps.

HDR, display, and viewing distance

The perceived difference depends on your television or monitor. A large 4K screen viewed from close range makes texture and shadow changes easier to see than a small 1080p display across a room. HDR support, local-dimming behavior, calibration, and the game’s tone mapping can matter as much as pixel count. Compare both editions on the same display with the same HDR setting; otherwise you may mistake a display adjustment for a remaster improvement.

Performance: frame rate, stability, and input response

What Game Boost can and cannot do

Game Boost can make a compatible PS4 game run at a higher or more stable frame rate. It may also help a game that already uses dynamic resolution reach clearer images more often. It cannot guarantee 60 fps, remove a 30-fps cap, or add a new performance mode when the original software does not support one. Sony’s wording is deliberately conditional: “Select PS4 titles will see increased loading speeds on the PS5 console, and will also leverage Game Boost, offering improved or more stable frame rates.” Read the full explanation in Sony’s PS4-on-PS5 FAQ.

What a remaster can change

A PS5 build can remove an old frame-rate ceiling, revise CPU-heavy simulation, improve asset streaming, and expose selectable 30-, 60-, or 120-fps targets. PlayStation’s upgrade guide lists up to 120 fps for an enhanced performance mode in some games, but that is not a universal remaster specification. Your display must also support the selected refresh rate, and the title must actually implement the mode.

Why stability matters more than a peak number

A mode that briefly reaches 60 fps but repeatedly drops can feel less responsive than a well-paced 45 or 30 fps mode. Look for frame-time consistency, camera judder, traversal stutter, and uneven animation cadence, not just the highest number shown in a marketing description. If the PS4 version was already capped and stable, the practical difference from running it on PS5 may be small; if it was CPU-limited or frequently dipped, Game Boost can be immediately noticeable.

Loading times: faster does not mean “fully PS5-native”

Native PS5 streaming

PS5-native software is built around the console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and custom I/O architecture. A remaster can reorganize data and streaming requests for that system, reducing boot, checkpoint, elevator, and fast-travel waits. Some titles approach near-instant transitions, while others retain waits for design, decompression, or online-service reasons.

PS4 software on the PS5 SSD

Moving a PS4 game from an external drive to the PS5’s internal SSD can shorten loading, and Sony explicitly says PS4 games load more quickly from the internal drive. The same statement adds an important limitation: “PS4 and PlayStation VR games will load more quickly when stored on and played from PS5’s internal SSD, but they won’t leverage the full next-generation capabilities of the SSD.” See the PS5 ultimate FAQ.

That means a backward-compatible copy can be faster without matching a native remaster. File layout, compression, CPU decompression, shader compilation, and the game’s own loading screens all influence the result. There is no defensible single seconds figure for “PS4 versus PS5” without naming the game, build, storage condition, save location, and patch.

Why published loading claims often conflict

Two tests can produce different results if one starts from a cold boot and the other resumes from a suspended game, if one uses an external USB drive, or if the save files trigger different world states. Patches can also change asset streaming. When you see a number, check whether it identifies the exact game version, console storage, route, and start and end points.

Side-by-side comparison

Comparison point Native PS5 remaster Original PS4 game running on PS5
Asset quality Can add higher-resolution textures, revised lighting, geometry, shadows, reflections, and effects; the exact changes are game-specific. Uses the PS4 asset set. Dynamic resolution or unlocked rendering may look cleaner with extra headroom, but no new assets are authored.
Resolution options Often offers selectable Graphics and Performance modes; targets vary by title and display. Usually keeps the PS4 settings. A dynamic-resolution or unlocked-frame-rate title may reach its upper range more often.
Frame-rate target and stability May add a 60-fps mode or, in some titles, an enhanced mode targeting up to 120 fps; implementation is title-specific. Game Boost can produce higher or more stable rates in select games, but it does not guarantee a new cap or a locked target.
Loading and fast travel Can use PS5-native SSD streaming and custom I/O; near-instant transitions are possible but not guaranteed. Loads faster from the PS5 internal SSD than from slower storage in supported situations, but does not use the SSD’s full next-generation capabilities.
DualSense and audio May add haptics, adaptive triggers, 3D-audio tuning, or other PS5-specific features; check the game’s feature list. Original controller and audio behavior generally remain unless the publisher issued a specific compatibility update.
Upgrade price and edition Not stated at platform level; the publisher decides whether the upgrade is free, paid, bundled, or sold separately. No remaster purchase is needed if you already own a compatible PS4 entitlement, subject to the title’s licensing and disc rules.
Disc requirements Not stated at platform level. Confirm the PS5 edition, region, and whether a disc drive is required for a disc-based entitlement. For a disc-based PS4 copy, verify that your PS5 model has a compatible disc drive and that the title is supported; digital ownership has different licensing conditions.
Save transfer Not stated universally. Some games import PS4 saves, some require an in-game upload/download step, and some do not support transfer. Uses the PS4 save path when the game and account support it; cloud storage and version compatibility still need checking.
Added content May include expansions, levels, characters, modes, or cosmetic items, but none is guaranteed by the remaster label. Contains the original PS4 content unless a separate patch or edition supplied additions.

For cells marked “not stated,” consult the game publisher’s upgrade page and the PlayStation store listing for the exact edition. Platform guidance cannot establish a universal price, save-transfer rule, or content package.

How to decide whether the remaster is worth buying

Choose the remaster when visual or technical changes are your priority

  • You want rebuilt textures, lighting, geometry, or effects rather than merely faster execution of PS4 assets.
  • You prefer a selectable 60-fps mode, and the original release is capped at 30 fps or has frequent dips.
  • You have a 4K HDR display, a high-refresh-rate screen, or an audio setup that can use the PS5 features the remaster adds.
  • Fast travel and repeated restarts are a major part of your play time and the native build meaningfully improves streaming.
  • The package includes content you would otherwise buy separately.

Keep the PS4 version when the existing experience is sufficient

  • You already own the game and it is supported on PS5 with a stable frame rate.
  • The title’s PS4 release already meets your preferred resolution and frame-rate target.
  • You play on a 1080p display where subtle asset changes are difficult to see.
  • The remaster’s fee buys visual changes you do not value and adds no content you want.
  • Your main goal is shorter loading; test the PS4 copy from the PS5 internal SSD before assuming a remaster is necessary.

Wait for title-specific evidence when the benefit is unclear

Do not infer value from the word “remastered” alone. Find the publisher’s feature list, mode descriptions, upgrade price, save-transfer instructions, and disc requirements. Independent comparisons are useful only when they identify the same patch and console settings. A platform-level promise of “up to 120 fps,” for example, does not mean the unmentioned game supports that mode.

A repeatable way to compare one game yourself

  1. Record the exact editions. Write down the PS4 disc or digital version, the PS5 remaster name, region, and installed patch number. Different editions can contain different assets or content.
  2. Use the same hardware conditions. Compare on the same PS5, display input, HDR setting, audio output, and controller. Note whether each build is installed on the internal SSD or external storage.
  3. Check the mode menu. Record every available Graphics, Performance, or high-refresh option and the developer’s stated target. Do not translate a mode label into a guaranteed resolution or frame rate.
  4. Repeat identical scenes. Use the same save, camera angle, fast-travel destination, and route. Capture boot, save-load, checkpoint, and fast-travel behavior separately; one short loading screen is not representative of every transition.
  5. Watch for frame pacing. Observe camera pans, combat effects, traversal, and crowded areas. A stable presentation is more useful than a peak reading from an empty room.
  6. Inspect the features you will use. Test haptic intensity, adaptive triggers, audio modes, photo tools, accessibility options, and any added content rather than assuming they are present.
  7. Verify saves before starting over. Follow the publisher’s transfer procedure and keep the PS4 save until the PS5 build has successfully loaded it. Transfer support is not universal.

Common mistakes that produce unfair comparisons

Calling a higher output resolution “native 4K”

The console can output a 4K signal while the game renders internally at a dynamic or lower resolution. Use the developer’s technical description or a controlled analysis instead of reading the television’s input label.

Assuming every PS4 game receives Game Boost

Game Boost applies selectively. A supported title may gain stability, while another sees only storage-related loading improvements. Check the compatibility notes for the exact game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using a 120-Hz television as proof of 120 fps

A 120-Hz display can accept high-refresh output, but the game must render a 120-fps mode and the console must be configured to use it. PlayStation’s “up to 120 fps” wording applies only to some enhanced titles.

Comparing different storage paths

An external USB drive, the PS5 internal SSD, and a native PS5 data layout are not equivalent test conditions. State the storage location whenever you report loading behavior.

Ignoring patches and save state

Streaming and shader behavior can change after an update, and a save in a busy late-game area can load differently from a fresh early-game save. Record the patch and repeat the same route.

What to verify before purchasing or upgrading

  • Edition: Is the listing a native PS5 build, a PS4 game with a PS5 entitlement, or only a PS4 copy playable through compatibility?
  • Price: Is the upgrade free, paid, included in a bundle, or available only by buying the PS5 edition? The amount is publisher- and region-specific.
  • Disc and region: Does a disc-based entitlement require a PS5 with a disc drive, and does the disc region match your account?
  • Modes: What resolution and frame-rate targets does the publisher actually state?
  • Features: Are DualSense, audio, accessibility, photo mode, or other PS5 additions listed explicitly?
  • Saves: Is transfer automatic, cloud-based, or handled inside the game, and can it move in both directions?
  • Content: Are expansions or new missions included, or are they separate purchases?
  • Support: Is the PS4 version listed as compatible, and are there known limitations for your region or edition?

The practical verdict

If you want the clearest image, a choice of modern performance modes, PS5 controller features, and the best possible streaming, choose the native PS5 remaster when its documented changes justify the price. If you already own the PS4 game, install it on the PS5 internal SSD and check its compatibility behavior first: Game Boost and extra hardware headroom may deliver a smoother, faster version at no additional game cost, but the original assets and PS4-era limitations remain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For loading times in particular, reject universal claims. A native PS5 build can exploit the console’s full SSD and custom I/O design; a PS4 build can still load faster on PS5 without using those capabilities. Only a test of the named game, build, patch, storage location, and identical route can supply a meaningful seconds figure.
