If a PS5 remaster upgrade is missing, first prove that the signed-in account owns the eligible PS4 game or has an active entitlement, then check the edition, disc drive, disc region, and Console Sharing and Offline Play. Restore licenses before repairing the download. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot redeem a PS4 Blu-ray upgrade, and some publishers require a same-region disc and the disc inserted whenever the PS5 version is used.
What a missing PS5 upgrade usually means
The upgrade button is not a universal feature that appears for every copy of every game. PlayStation evaluates several conditions at once: the account currently signed in, the edition and region of the game, whether access comes from a purchase or PlayStation Plus, the console model, and any publisher-specific upgrade rule. A Store page showing a price does not by itself prove that the upgrade is broken; it can mean that the account, edition, region, or entitlement does not match the copy you are trying to upgrade.

Use the checks below in order. They move from entitlement errors, which are the most common and easiest to correct, to disc eligibility and then local download or database problems.

Sign in to the purchasing account
On the PS5, switch to the account that bought or redeemed the PS4 game. A different user can see the installed PS4 application yet lack the right to claim its PS5 upgrade. If the title was purchased by another user on the same console, that purchasing account must enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on this PS5.

Check transaction history
Open the account’s transaction history and confirm that the original purchase completed rather than remaining pending, reversed, or attached to another account. Match the transaction to the exact game and edition shown in the Store. Deluxe, standard, regional, bundled, and physical editions can have different upgrade rules, so an apparently identical title name is not enough evidence.
Check PlayStation Plus access
If you obtained the PS4 game through PlayStation Plus instead of buying it, verify that the subscription is active and that the game is still available under that entitlement. A downloaded installation can remain on the drive after the subscription or catalogue availability has changed, while the PS5 upgrade entitlement is no longer claimable.
Confirm Console Sharing and Offline Play
When another account owns the game, that account must enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on the console. Without it, the other users may see an installed game but cannot reliably validate the license or obtain an associated upgrade. Make this check before deleting or reinstalling anything.
2. Find both versions in the library and Store
Search the complete collection
Go to Game Library > Your Collection and search for the title. Look for separate PS4 and PS5 entries; the PS5 version may not replace the PS4 icon. Open the entry’s options and inspect the available version selector or download choices. A PS4 installation alone does not confirm that the PS5 entitlement has been granted.
Unhide the game if necessary
A hidden game is hidden from the libraries of all consoles using that account until it is unhidden. Check the account’s hidden-games list and restore the title to the visible collection, then search Your Collection again. If the game is absent from both the visible and hidden lists, return to the account and transaction checks rather than assuming the console has lost the purchase.

Interpret a price on the Store page
Seeing a price where you expected an upgrade button can indicate any of these mismatches:
- The Store is open under an account that did not buy or redeem the PS4 game.
- The installed or inserted copy is a different edition from the one that qualifies.
- The disc or account belongs to a different region.
- The title offers a paid upgrade rather than a free one.
- The game is being accessed through PlayStation Plus and the required subscription or catalogue entitlement is not active.
Upgrade terms are title-specific. Do not purchase the full-price Store listing merely because the page displays a price; establish which of the conditions above applies first.
3. Restore licenses on the PS5
License restoration is the safest repair for an entitlement that is valid but not being recognized. On the PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses, select the affected account, and let the process finish. Sony says, “Restoring licenses won’t affect your data.” Sony specifically lists a padlocked game and a game or add-on that cannot be located as reasons to try this step.
After the process completes, restart the console, open Game Library again, and revisit the game’s Store page while signed in to the owning account. If the PS5 entry still does not appear, continue with the hardware and region checks rather than repeatedly restoring licenses.
4. Check disc, console, and region eligibility
Disc upgrades require a disc-capable PS5
A PS4 Blu-ray upgrade requires a PS5 model with a disc drive. The PS5 Digital Edition cannot redeem PS4 Blu-ray upgrade offers because it cannot read the qualifying disc. No download, storage device, or replacement accessory can create the missing disc entitlement.

Keep the qualifying disc inserted
For a disc-based upgrade, insert the original PS4 disc to start the download and keep it inserted whenever you play the downloaded PS5 version. The disc acts as the ownership check; installing the PS5 data does not turn the disc purchase into a standalone digital license. Square Enix states that the disc must be inserted whenever the PS5 digital version is downloaded or played.
Match the disc region to the PSN account
Publisher rules can require the PS4 disc’s country or region to match the country of the PSN account. Insomniac’s rule for its Spider-Man remaster upgrade, for example, requires a PS4 disc originating from the same country as the PSN account. An imported disc can therefore install the PS4 game yet fail to expose the upgrade. Check the publisher’s eligibility terms for the specific title before changing account regions or buying another copy.
Digital ownership follows different rules
A digital PS4 purchase is validated against the purchasing account, not a physical disc. It still must be the qualifying edition and region, and some games charge for the PS5 upgrade. If the Store does not recognize a digital purchase after you have confirmed the account and restored licenses, record the exact edition and transaction details for support.
5. Repair an incomplete or inconsistent download
Check service status and system software first
Open PlayStation’s service-status information and check for an outage affecting account management, the Store, or downloads. Install the latest PS5 system software as well. A service interruption or outdated system can prevent the entitlement check from completing even when ownership is valid.
Restart and remove only the incomplete installation
- Restart the PS5 normally after the service and software checks.
- Identify the stalled or incomplete PS4/PS5 installation in storage and delete that installation, not the transaction or account data.
- Return to Game Library or the Store while signed in to the owning account and start the correct PS5 download again.
- Use a wired network connection where possible, as Sony suggests, and leave the console online until the download and entitlement check finish.
Deleting an incomplete installation does not refund a purchase or change ownership; it simply removes local files so the console can obtain a clean copy.

Use Safe Mode only after the basic repair
If the library or download remains inconsistent after a restart and clean redownload, start the PS5 in Safe Mode and choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database. This repairs local system indexes that can prevent a valid game from appearing correctly. It does not make an ineligible disc, account, or subscription qualify, so perform the entitlement and hardware checks first.

Because publishers set their own eligibility rules, use this table as a diagnosis framework rather than a promise that every title follows the same route.
7. A complete decision path for the “Upgrade to PS5 Version” button
- Confirm the user: sign in to the account shown in the purchase transaction or the account that redeemed the entitlement.
- Confirm the access type: identify whether the game is a digital purchase, a PS4 Blu-ray, or PlayStation Plus access.
- Confirm the edition: compare the transaction, disc label, installed game, and Store listing.
- Confirm the console: if the source is a disc, verify that the PS5 has a disc drive.
- Confirm the region: check the disc country and PSN account country against the publisher’s rule.
- Check the library: search Game Library > Your Collection for both PS4 and PS5 entries and inspect hidden games.
- Restore licenses: use Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
- Check platform health: review PlayStation service status and install current system software.
- Repair local files: restart, delete the incomplete installation, and redownload; prefer a wired connection.
- Rebuild the index: if the listing remains inconsistent, use Safe Mode’s Clear Cache and Rebuild Database option.
- Escalate: contact PlayStation Support with the evidence listed in the next section.
8. When to contact PlayStation Support
Escalate after the owning account, transaction, subscription, sharing, library, disc, region, license, service, and download checks all agree that the upgrade should be available. Support can investigate an account-side entitlement that local troubleshooting cannot repair.
Include the following in the first request:
- The exact game title, edition, and whether your copy is digital, disc-based, or from PlayStation Plus.
- The PSN account used to purchase or redeem it, without sending your password.
- The PS5 model, including whether it has a disc drive.
- The disc country or region, if applicable, and the PSN account country.
- The transaction date or other purchase record and the result of Restore Licenses.
- The exact error code or message, detailed reproduction steps, and whether the PS4 version still launches.
- A screenshot or video of the Store page, missing PS5 entry, or failed upgrade attempt when possible.
- The date and time, including time zone, when the failure occurred.
This evidence lets support distinguish a missing entitlement from a service outage, an edition mismatch, or a local database problem without asking you to repeat every basic step.

- Using the wrong user: an installed game icon is not proof that the current user owns the upgrade.
- Assuming every upgrade is free: some publishers offer a paid PS5 path, so a price can be expected.
- Trying a disc on a Digital Edition: the console cannot read or redeem the PS4 Blu-ray.
- Removing the disc after installation: disc ownership must normally be verified whenever the PS5 version is played.
- Ignoring region differences: an imported disc can fail an upgrade rule even when the PS4 game itself runs.
- Rebuying before checking licenses: a second purchase does not correct an account, sharing, or region mismatch.
- Buying storage or accessories as a license fix: hardware can provide space or a drive only when you already have a confirmed hardware need; it cannot restore a PlayStation Store entitlement.
- Rebuilding the database first: Safe Mode repairs local indexing, not an ineligible account, disc, edition, or subscription.
Why the PS4 version downloads but the remaster does not
The PS4 and PS5 applications are separate entitlements and downloads. The console can therefore install a PS4 version from a disc or account while rejecting the PS5 application because the PS5 license is paid, tied to another edition, restricted by region, dependent on an active subscription, or unavailable on a Digital Edition when the source is a disc. Treat the successful PS4 download as evidence that the local installation works, not as proof that the remaster entitlement exists.
Once the account, edition, region, console model, and access type are correct, restore licenses and start a fresh PS5 download. If those conditions are not correct, no cache clear or reinstall can make the remaster appear.
