For a broad PS2 collection, a capable PC running PCSX2 is the better option. It supports custom resolutions, save states, virtual memory cards and patches, and it can cover far more of your collection when you provide your own BIOS dump and game images. A PS5 is easier only when the specific game you want is already offered as an officially supported PS2 re-release or catalog title.
Do not treat PS5 as a universal PS2 player. Sony’s current support information says that more than 99 percent of more than 4,000 PS4 games work on PS5; that statement concerns PS4 compatibility, not ordinary PS2 discs or the complete PS2 library. Check the exact game’s PlayStation Store or catalog listing before choosing a PS5 for PS2 access.
What PS2 support on PS5 actually means
Playing a PS2 game on PS5 generally means playing a particular re-release, remaster or catalog version that Sony has made available for PS5. It does not mean inserting any original PS2 disc and expecting the console to run it. The supported release may include its own rendering, control and save options, so features vary by title.
Check the exact title before buying
- Search the PlayStation Store for the game’s precise name and edition.
- Confirm that the listing identifies PS5 playability, rather than only PS4, streaming access or a similarly named remake.
- If the game is part of a subscription catalog, verify that it is currently included in your region and tier.
- Check whether your preferred language, downloadable content and save-transfer features are supported by that particular release.
A general PS5 backward-compatibility statement cannot answer those title-level questions. Availability can change by region, subscription period and licensing agreement, so a PS5 purchase based on a specific PS2 game should follow a title search, not a general assumption.

What PCSX2 adds on a PC
PCSX2 is a free, open-source PlayStation 2 emulator for computers. Its official project materials list custom resolutions and upscaling, virtual and shareable memory cards, save states and a patching system. Those options make it possible to tailor the experience instead of accepting one fixed console implementation.
The library is large, but compatibility is still game-specific
PCSX2’s project describes a significant majority of the PS2 library as playable, and its current project README reports more than 2,500 titles tested. “Tested” is not the same as flawless: a game can boot but still have rendering errors, speed issues, missing effects or an unresolved progression problem. Use the project’s compatibility list for the exact game and, where available, read the notes for the current PCSX2 version.
What you must provide
PCSX2’s setup requires a BIOS dump from a PS2 and your game media. The project’s FAQ describes using original discs or dumped images, but recommends ISO dumps because direct disc playback can have speed problems. The emulator does not keep a PC optical drive spinning in the same way a PS2 does, so reading directly from a disc can produce uneven performance in some games.

Will PCSX2 run on your PC?
PCSX2 publishes hardware tiers instead of one universal specification because PS2 games place very different loads on a computer. The examples below are vendor-provided reference points, not guaranteed frame-rate thresholds or independent test results.

The project warns that requirements can vary drastically between games. A higher internal resolution and more demanding blending accuracy increase GPU work; a title that relies heavily on the CPU may remain difficult even when the graphics card is adequate. Laptop power modes, thermal throttling and background applications can also change practical performance.
A sensible pre-purchase check
- Find the game in PCSX2’s compatibility list and read the notes, not just the status label.
- Compare your processor with the project’s reference tiers, giving extra weight to single-thread CPU performance for CPU-bound games.
- Plan to start at native or modest internal resolution before attempting high upscaling.
- Make sure your operating system, graphics drivers and controller connection are supported by your PCSX2 build.
How to set up PCSX2
The exact names of menus can change between builds, but the project’s first-run flow follows the same basic sequence.

- Prepare your BIOS dump. Use the BIOS-dumping process for your own PS2, then copy the resulting BIOS files to a location you can select during setup.
- Launch the first-time wizard. PCSX2’s FAQ summarizes the process as dumping the BIOS, copying it to the computer, launching PCSX2 and stepping through the first-time setup wizard.
- Select the BIOS. Point the wizard to the folder containing your dump and choose the appropriate regional BIOS entry.
- Configure a memory card. Create a virtual memory card for ordinary in-game saves. Keep a separate card or backup if you want to isolate experiments or patches.
- Add your game. Prefer an ISO made from your own disc. If you use an optical disc directly, select the drive and watch for the speed problems described in the FAQ.
- Choose a conservative renderer first. Run the game at native or a small upscale, verify that it behaves correctly, then increase resolution or accuracy one setting at a time.
- Test a representative save. Play long enough to reach a save point, reload it, and confirm that both the virtual memory card and any save-state location work before investing many hours.
Keep the original disc and your BIOS-dump process available. If a game update, PCSX2 update or graphics change causes a problem, you can return to a known-good configuration instead of rebuilding the entire setup.

Graphics, patches and save options on PC
Upscaling without assuming every game benefits
PCSX2 can render at resolutions above the original PS2 output, making 3D scenes cleaner on a modern display. The improvement is not universal: 2D artwork, pre-rendered backgrounds and deliberately low-resolution effects may remain unchanged or can look different at higher scaling. Higher values also increase GPU demand, so begin with a moderate upscale and lower it if frame pacing becomes uneven.
Save states versus memory cards
A save state captures the emulator’s current position and is useful for testing, difficult sections or quickly returning to a known moment. A virtual memory card mirrors the console’s normal save method and is the safer choice for long-term progress and compatibility. Keep regular in-game saves even when using save states; a state can become unreliable after changing emulator versions, patches or settings.
Patches require restraint
PCSX2 includes a patching system. Patches can correct known issues or alter presentation, but they are game- and version-specific. Apply one change at a time, keep a backup of your memory-card file and record the setting if you need to troubleshoot a later crash or visual error.

Controllers and input
A controller is optional for setup, although many PS2 games are more comfortable with one than with a keyboard. Windows builds include XInput bindings that work with Xbox One or other XInput-compatible controllers. Linux and macOS automatically detect recognizable controllers through SDL.

Basic input troubleshooting
- Connect the controller before launching PCSX2, then select the detected device in the input settings.
- If buttons are shifted, clear the profile and map each control manually while watching the on-screen input indicator.
- For wireless devices, test a wired connection if inputs drop or reconnect during play.
- Keep a keyboard mapping available so you can reach menus and pause the emulator if the controller stops responding.
You do not need a particular controller model. A USB XInput-compatible PC game controller is a practical optional accessory, while the operating system and the controller’s input standard determine how much configuration is required.

The game does not appear to run
Confirm that the BIOS folder is correctly selected, the ISO is readable and the game is listed in the compatibility database. A missing BIOS or invalid image prevents a useful compatibility test; do not diagnose graphics settings until the basic boot path works.
The game runs slowly from a disc
Dump the disc to an ISO and load that image instead. PCSX2’s FAQ specifically warns that some games can have speed problems when played directly from a disc because a PC drive behaves differently from the PS2’s drive.

Audio or graphics break after increasing resolution
Return to the previous renderer and resolution, then change one option at a time. If the issue disappears at native resolution, the PC may be reaching a GPU limit or the game may require a compatibility-specific setting. Check the game’s notes before enabling patches.

A game boots but later fails
Read the compatibility-list notes for the exact title and version. Test from a normal memory-card save rather than relying only on a save state, and remove recent patches or speed hacks to establish a clean baseline.
The PC feels powerful but performance remains poor
Check whether the title is CPU-bound, whether the laptop is using a low-power profile and whether background applications are consuming processor time. Lowering internal resolution helps a GPU bottleneck but will not solve a CPU bottleneck; use the project’s game-specific guidance instead of assuming that a newer graphics card alone will fix it.
Which choice fits your priorities?
Choose PS5 when
- Your exact game is currently offered as a supported PS5 re-release or catalog title.
- You want the shortest setup and do not need broad access to an existing PS2 collection.
- You prefer a fixed console experience and are satisfied with the options included in that release.
Choose PCSX2 when
- You want to play many games rather than one or two confirmed PS5 releases.
- You already own a computer near the project’s moderate or heavy reference tier.
- You value upscaling, save states, virtual memory cards, patches and per-game configuration.
- You are willing to dump your own BIOS and create ISO images from your game media.
Use a two-device approach when your library is mixed
There is no requirement to make every game follow one method. A supported PS5 release can provide console convenience for that title, while PCSX2 can handle games absent from the catalog or games that benefit from configurable rendering. Keep your choice title-specific and verify compatibility before spending money on hardware.
What the available evidence does—and does not—establish
The PCSX2 project’s “more than 2,500 titles tested” figure is a count of entries on its compatibility list, not a percentage of the PS2 library and not a guarantee that every entry is flawless. Sony’s “more than 99 percent of 4,000-plus PS4 games playable on PS5” figure applies to PS4 games only. Neither figure supplies a universal answer for a particular PS2 title.
There is also no reliable general ranking for input latency or image quality between PS5 re-releases and PCSX2. Those results depend on the individual release, display path, emulator settings and computer hardware. Compare the exact PS5 version with the exact PC configuration you plan to use.
