PS5 Pro is the better fit if your favorite games have Pro-enhanced modes, you can see the improvements on your display, and the extra cost makes sense to you. It offers stronger graphics hardware, Sony’s PSSR upscaling, and support for more advanced ray tracing and higher or steadier frame rates in select games. Those are not guaranteed gains across the whole library: the benefit depends on each game and its settings. The standard PS5 remains the more sensible choice when it already meets your needs or the Pro’s price premium is difficult to justify.
What is the difference between PS5 and PS5 Pro?
The main difference is performance headroom for supported games, not a different generation of games. Both are PS5 consoles, but the Pro has more capable graphics hardware and features that developers can use to improve image quality, frame rates, or ray tracing. Sony’s launch announcement said the Pro has 67% more GPU compute units and memory that is 28% faster than the then-current PS5, enabling up to 45% faster rendering. These are Sony’s 2024 hardware and capability claims, not independently measured gains for every game.
Sony describes PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) as machine-learning-based upscaling that adds image detail. A game can use it to produce a sharper-looking image or target a higher output resolution without rendering every pixel at that resolution natively. The result depends on the game’s implementation and selected graphics mode.

| Area | PS5 Pro | Standard PS5 |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics and upscaling | Stronger graphics hardware; supports PSSR in compatible games. Improvements vary by title and mode. | Does not have the Pro’s graphics hardware or PSSR feature. |
| Ray tracing and frame rates | Sony promotes more advanced ray tracing and higher or more consistent frame rates in select enhanced games. Supported games may offer combinations of ray tracing, 4K output, and up to 60 or 120 fps on suitable displays. | Runs PS5 games, but does not offer the Pro-specific enhancements. Available modes vary by game. |
| Included storage | Sony’s current UK listing specifies a 2TB SSD. | Sony’s current US listing specifies a 1TB configuration. |
| Disc drive | Digital-only out of the box. A compatible Disc Drive is sold separately. | Disc support depends on the standard PS5 model; check the exact configuration. |
Storage figures reflect the cited regional listings accessed on October 9, 2026, not a guarantee for every region or hardware revision. Sony’s game counts and feature descriptions also change: its UK feature page currently says over 100 PS5 titles are enhanced for Pro, and its US Pro page says the console plays over 8,500 PS4 games. A compatible game may offer a Pro-specific improvement, but backward compatibility does not mean every PS4 game gets one.

How much better are PS5 Pro graphics and performance?
There is no single improvement percentage that describes every game. Developers decide how to use the Pro’s added hardware, and Sony says Pro-enhanced features vary by game. Depending on the title, a Pro mode may focus on a sharper image, more stable image quality, ray tracing, a higher frame rate, or a combination of these. Read the mode description for the games you actually play rather than assuming the Pro improves every visual or performance measure at once.
Sony says compatible games can combine ray tracing, 4K output, and frame rates up to 60 or 120 fps on suitable displays. Treat that as a capability for supported games, not a guarantee that every Pro-enhanced title runs at 4K and 120 fps. The screen must also support the output and refresh rate you want; a display that cannot show a particular mode may limit how visible that benefit is.
Sony’s announced 67%, 28%, and up-to-45% figures compare hardware capabilities with the then-current PS5. They are not a promise of equivalent gains in a specific game, nor a cross-game performance test. Sony’s September 2024 announcement also qualified Pro features as available only in select enhanced PS5 games and said they vary by game.
Is PS5 Pro worth it for your games and display?
Make the decision around your own library and setup. Check whether the games you play most have a Pro-enhanced mode, what that mode changes, and whether your display can show the resolution or refresh rate you value. If you already like the standard PS5’s image and performance in those games, the Pro’s hardware advantage may not translate into enough visible value for you.

- Consider PS5 Pro if your regular games have enhancements you want, your display supports the relevant output, and the local price premium is acceptable.
- Choose or keep a standard PS5 if your current console already meets your needs, your preferred games have little meaningful improvement, or the added cost is hard to justify.
- For PS4 libraries, the Pro plays over 8,500 PS4 games according to Sony’s current US page, but do not assume every compatible game gets a Pro-specific boost. Some PS4 and PS5 games can benefit from Game Boost; the effect differs by title.
What should disc owners and accessory owners budget for?
PS5 Pro is digital-only out of the box. If you use PS5 or compatible PS4 discs, include the cost of Sony’s separately sold compatible Disc Drive in your comparison. Sony says an internet connection is required to pair the drive with the console during setup. Digital-library owners do not need to buy the drive.
Sony’s compatibility guide says the Pro supports the compatible Disc Drive and vertical stand. The vertical stand is sold separately; older PS5 covers and the older PS5 base do not fit the Pro. Check compatibility for the exact accessory and console revision before reusing or purchasing accessories.

How to compare upgrade value without relying on launch prices
Sony announced a US launch MSRP of $699.99 in September 2024, alongside launch prices of £699.99, €799.99, and ¥119,980. These are historical launch prices, not current price quotes. Current prices, retailer stock, regional configurations, and trade-in offers can change, so compare what you would pay locally now.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Check your games. Look up Pro-enhanced support and identify whether the mode improves image quality, ray tracing, frame rate, or another feature you care about.
- Check your display. Confirm it supports the resolution and refresh rate relevant to those modes. Do not treat a 4K or high-refresh display as a universal requirement; its value depends on the feature you want to see.
- Calculate the complete upgrade cost. Compare the current local price of the Pro with the standard PS5, and add a compatible Disc Drive if you need disc playback. Account for any trade-in value you can actually obtain.
- Weigh the result against your current experience. If the games and screen make the improvements worthwhile at that total cost, the Pro may suit you. If not, keeping or choosing the standard PS5 is a reasonable value decision.
