Buy the standard PS5 if your main goal is to play GTA VI at the lowest sensible cost. Both the PS5 and PS5 Pro are listed for Grand Theft Auto VI, which is scheduled for November 19, 2026, and neither console is excluded from the announced release. The PS5 Pro is the better choice only if you also want its stronger hardware for other supported games, use a high-end display, and are comfortable paying a large premium before Rockstar and Sony publish GTA VI-specific performance details.
Sony has labeled GTA VI “PS5 Pro Enhanced,” but has not announced a Pro resolution target, frame-rate mode, or measured advantage. That makes this a value-and-use-case decision, not a guaranteed 60-fps-versus-30-fps choice.

The short answer
| Choose this | When it makes sense | What you get for GTA VI |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | You want access to GTA VI, prefer value, or do not regularly play other Pro-enhanced games. | The announced game platform, DualSense features, 3D audio support and SSD loading without the Pro premium. |
| PS5 Pro | You want the strongest PlayStation hardware for several supported games, have a 4K or high-refresh display, and accept uncertain GTA VI gains. | The same announced platform access plus a Pro-enhanced designation, with no published game-specific resolution or frame-rate guarantee. |
| Wait for more information | You are buying solely for a specific GTA VI mode such as 60 fps, native 4K or a particular ray-tracing setting. | Those details have not been announced. A later technical update could change the value calculation. |
For most players purchasing primarily for GTA VI, the standard PS5 is the rational default. The Pro becomes easier to justify when GTA VI is one part of a broader premium-console purchase rather than the only reason to spend more.

PlayStation’s GTA VI game page lists PS5 and PS5 Pro and gives November 19, 2026 as the release date. The game is not announced for PS4. Rockstar’s platform information likewise lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S for the game.
#1 Best Overall

- Vertical Stand sold seperately
That means a current PS5 is not a compatibility compromise. It is one of the consoles Rockstar and PlayStation have named for the launch. Buying the Pro is not necessary to unlock the game, enter its online ecosystem when available, or receive the core console features described for the release.
What Sony says the game uses on PS5
Sony describes GTA VI as using the PS5’s DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, the controller speaker, Tempest 3D AudioTech and the console’s high-speed SSD. The company’s PlayStation Blog announcement says GTA VI “will play best on PS5” through its partnership with Rockstar. That is official promotional language, not an independent comparison between PS5 models; it does establish that Sony and Rockstar are targeting the standard PS5 as a fully supported experience.
You do not need to purchase a second controller to use those functions. A DualSense controller is included with a new console, while an additional controller is optional for local multiplayer if the final game supports the relevant modes.

Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement reports three headline differences from the current PS5:
- 67% more GPU compute units.
- 28% faster memory.
- Up to 45% faster rendering, according to Sony’s platform claim.
These figures describe Sony’s hardware comparison, not a GTA VI benchmark. Rendering speed depends on a game’s engine, its graphics settings, its CPU workload and how the developer implements Pro support. Sony explicitly says Pro features are available only in selected enhanced games and that the features vary by title.
Why those numbers do not predict GTA VI performance
A larger GPU and faster memory can give a developer more room for higher image quality, steadier performance, longer draw distances or more demanding lighting. They do not determine which combination Rockstar will ship. A game can use the extra capacity for visual detail instead of a higher frame rate, or it can offer several modes with different trade-offs.
The PS5 Pro also includes Game Boost support for more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games, according to Sony. That statistic concerns the broader PlayStation library and says nothing about GTA VI’s launch settings.
Is GTA VI PS5 Pro Enhanced?
Yes. The PlayStation Store listing identifies GTA VI as “PS5 Pro Enhanced.” That is the strongest official statement currently available about Pro-specific support.
“PS5 Pro Enhanced” is a designation, not a specification. In the official material available for this comparison, Sony and Rockstar do not state:
- a target or minimum frame rate;
- whether a 60-fps mode will be offered;
- a native or reconstructed 4K resolution;
- which ray-tracing, lighting or distance settings will change;
- whether the game will have separate quality and performance modes; or
- how much image-quality improvement the Pro will deliver on a particular television.
Therefore, it is not accurate to promise that GTA VI will run at 60 fps, native 4K or any other specific setting on the Pro. The same caution applies to claims that the regular PS5 will be limited to a particular frame rate. Until Rockstar publishes technical details or the game is tested, those outcomes are unknown.
Current price difference
Sony’s recommended retail prices effective April 2, 2026 show a substantial gap. The figures below are official prices for the named markets, not guarantees of stock or the price a retailer will charge.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Market | PS5 | PS5 Digital Edition | PS5 Pro |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | $649.99 | $599.99 | $899.99 |
| United Kingdom | £569.99 | £519.99 | £789.99 |
| Europe | €649.99 | €599.99 | €899.99 |
| Japan | ¥97,980 | ¥89,980 | ¥137,980 |
In the United States, the Pro is $250 above the disc PS5 and $300 above the Digital Edition at those recommended prices. Sony’s price-change announcement gives the effective date and regional figures. Sony’s US site currently lists the PS5 Pro starting at $899.99.
Local taxes, bundles, temporary discounts and inventory can change the amount you actually pay. Check the live listing in your country before ordering rather than relying on an older launch-price article. GTA VI software is a separate expense: PlayStation currently lists the US Standard Edition at $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition at $99.99, subject to change and separate from console pricing.
Disc drive and the GTA VI physical edition
The disc question is easy to misunderstand. Rockstar Support says the physical GTA VI Standard Edition box contains a digital download code and no game disc. The physical edition is expected to be available from November 12, 2026 to support pre-loading, and redeeming the code is subject to the region of the PlayStation account. Confirm the live retailer listing and redemption terms before purchase because those details are time-sensitive.
Consequently, a disc drive is not required to use that physical-box GTA VI edition. You still may want one for other reasons:
- buying used PS5 games or borrowing discs;
- reselling games after finishing them;
- playing an existing disc collection; or
- watching compatible physical video media.
Sony announced the PS5 Pro as a disc-less console with a separately sold disc-drive option. The exact bundle contents and local availability should be checked for your market. If you know you want discs for other games, include the cost of the optional drive in the Pro’s total rather than comparing only the console sticker prices.
How your display changes the decision
4K television or monitor
A 4K screen can make image-quality improvements easier to see, but the size and viewing distance matter. Sitting close to a large screen makes fine detail, reconstruction artifacts and distant-object clarity more noticeable than viewing from across a room. The Pro’s extra hardware may be more valuable to enthusiasts who actively notice those differences in several games.
High-refresh display
A 120-Hz display is useful only when a game offers a mode that can take advantage of it. No official GTA VI frame-rate target has been published, so buying the Pro solely because you own a 120-Hz television is a bet on future settings, not a confirmed benefit.
Standard 1080p television
On a 1080p display, the visual case for paying the Pro premium is weaker. The game will still run on the standard PS5, and the value of additional rendering headroom depends on how Rockstar exposes it and how much of the difference survives downscaling.

Who should buy the standard PS5
You are buying for GTA VI access first
The standard PS5 is the straightforward choice when GTA VI is the main reason for upgrading. It is an announced platform, supports the DualSense and audio features Sony highlights, and avoids spending hundreds more for benefits that have not yet been quantified for this game.
You play mostly unenhanced or older games
If your library contains few titles with PS5 Pro enhancements, the Pro’s broader hardware advantage will be used less often. A standard PS5 leaves more of your budget for the game, storage, a larger display or other accessories that affect your overall setup.
You want physical games
Select the disc PS5 if you regularly buy, borrow or resell discs. Select the Digital Edition only if you are comfortable buying downloads and do not need a drive for your wider library. The GTA VI box’s download code does not, by itself, decide between these models.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should consider the PS5 Pro
You already value premium performance across several games
The Pro makes more sense when GTA VI joins a substantial rotation of games that support Pro enhancements. In that case, you are paying for a platform-level upgrade rather than a single unverified GTA VI outcome.
You have a revealing display and care about image quality
Owners of large 4K or high-refresh displays who notice differences in clarity, lighting and consistency are the audience most likely to appreciate extra rendering headroom. Even then, the improvement will depend on Rockstar’s final implementation.
You accept uncertainty
Buy the Pro now only if you would be satisfied with its general hardware benefits even if GTA VI launches without the exact mode you hope for. The “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label confirms support, but it does not guarantee a particular visual setting.
A practical buying framework
- Confirm your platform requirement. Both PS5 models are on the announced GTA VI platform list; PS4 is not.
- Set your total budget. Include the console, GTA VI edition, tax, storage, and—if applicable—the optional Pro disc drive.
- Decide whether you need discs for other games. Do not assume the GTA VI physical box includes a disc.
- Assess your display. Note its resolution, refresh rate, size and viewing distance, then consider whether you would notice improvements in supported games.
- Count your likely Pro-enhanced games. If GTA VI is the only one, treat the Pro as a speculative purchase; if many are in your library, its premium is easier to rationalize.
- Wait for technical details if a specific mode is essential. Do not prepay for an advertised 60-fps or native-4K outcome that has not been announced.
Buying and setup checklist
- Check the console model and whether a disc drive is included before paying.
- Compare the current price in your country with Sony’s recommended retail price and the retailer’s return policy.
- Verify that your PlayStation account region matches any GTA VI download code you buy.
- Leave sufficient SSD space for the digital installation and updates; the game’s final storage requirement has not been stated in the official information cited here.
- Update the console system software and pair the included DualSense before launch.
- Use your television’s correct HDMI input and enable its game mode; display settings can affect latency and image quality regardless of console model.
- Download the game ahead of launch when pre-loading becomes available, and check the live store page for the final release schedule.
Common mistakes to avoid
Assuming “Enhanced” means 60 fps
Enhanced is a support label. Without a Rockstar or Sony specification, it cannot be translated into a frame-rate promise.
Comparing an old launch price with the current Pro price
Use the April 2, 2026 recommended prices as the current official anchor for the markets listed above. Retail promotions may be lower, while bundles may be higher.
Buying the Pro for the GTA VI box’s disc
The physical Standard Edition is described as a box with a download code. Choose a disc drive for your other games or media, not because that particular GTA VI package requires one.
Treating Sony’s rendering claim as a game test
“Up to 45% faster rendering” is Sony’s platform claim. It is not a measured GTA VI result and should not be used to calculate a guaranteed frame rate.
Ignoring account-region restrictions
Rockstar says code redemption is tied to the region of the platform account. Check this before buying an imported physical package or a code from another market.
Bottom line
For GTA VI alone, buy the standard PS5—preferably the disc model if you want physical games, or the Digital Edition if your library is download-only. Buy the PS5 Pro when you are intentionally investing in stronger PlayStation hardware for multiple supported games and are comfortable with GTA VI’s still-unannounced Pro settings. Both consoles are legitimate GTA VI platforms; the Pro’s current advantage is potential, not a published performance guarantee.
