For GTA VI alone, the standard PS5 is the value choice. Sony lists both PS5 and PS5 Pro as GTA VI platforms, with the game marked PS5 Pro Enhanced. The PS5 Pro costs $250 more at Sony’s US recommended prices, but Sony and Rockstar have not published a GTA VI-specific resolution, frame-rate target, ray-tracing feature, or image-quality comparison. Buy the Pro only if its broader hardware advantages are worth paying for even without a quantified GTA VI benefit.
GTA VI is listed for release on November 19, 2026, exclusively on PS5-family consoles among PlayStation systems. It will not be playable on PS4.

What Sony has officially confirmed about GTA VI on PS5
PlayStation’s US GTA VI listing names two compatible platforms: PS5 and PS5 Pro Enhanced. That answers the most important compatibility question: the regular PS5 is an official GTA VI platform, not a fallback or unsupported version.

Because that date is still ahead of launch, performance details can change as Rockstar and Sony publish more technical information. The listing also states that GTA VI will not be playable on PS4, so an older PlayStation cannot be used as a lower-cost route to the game.

“Thanks to the close partnership between Sony Interactive Entertainment and Rockstar Games, Grand Theft Auto VI will play best on PS5 by taking advantage of PS5’s immersive features to deliver a deeply engaging single-player experience when it launches on November 19.”
That statement comes from Mary Yee, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s senior vice president of marketing, in a PlayStation.Blog post dated June 24, 2026. “Play best on PS5” describes the target platform family and its features; it does not publish a separate PS5 Pro frame-rate or resolution promise.
US console prices and the size of the Pro premium
Sony’s US recommended prices, effective April 2, 2026, are the clearest starting point for the value calculation. They are recommended retail prices rather than guaranteed checkout prices. Retailer discounts, bundles, taxes, stock, and regional pricing can change what you actually pay.
Recommended Free Tools
| Console | Sony US recommended price | Difference versus PS5 | What the price tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 | $649.99 | — | Lowest listed price for the standard PS5 route to GTA VI |
| PS5 Digital Edition | $599.99 | $50 less | Lower-priced digital-only PS5 option listed by Sony |
| PS5 Pro | $899.99 | $250 more | Premium hardware with an upgraded GPU, advanced ray tracing, and PSSR |
The PS5 Pro premium is $250 compared with the $649.99 PS5 recommendation. That is about 38.5% more than the standard PS5 price. Compared with the $599.99 PS5 Digital Edition, the gap is $300. These calculations use Sony’s US figures effective April 2, 2026; they do not predict a sale price or a price in another country.
The game itself is a separate expense. The US PlayStation Store listing shows a Standard Edition at $79.99 and an Ultimate Edition at $99.99. Those are digital store listings whose prices, offers, preorder terms, and availability can change. The listing does not establish whether an equivalent physical retail edition will be available, so check the live listing in your region before ordering.
What PS5 Pro adds—and what that does not prove for GTA VI
Sony describes PS5 Pro with three headline capabilities:
- Upgraded GPU: more graphics hardware than the standard PS5 for supported games.
- Advanced ray tracing: more demanding lighting and reflection effects when a game implements them.
- PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR): Sony’s image-reconstruction technology for supported titles.
Sony also warns that PS5 Pro enhancements vary by game. A console-level feature is therefore not the same as a guaranteed improvement in every title. A game can use one capability, several capabilities, or none of them in a meaningful way.
GTA VI is labeled PS5 Pro Enhanced, so the game has confirmed Pro-enhancement status. However, the cited official material does not say whether its Pro mode will target a particular resolution, frame rate, ray-tracing configuration, or image-quality setting. It also does not quantify loading-time differences. Until Rockstar or Sony publishes those details, any claim such as “GTA VI will run at a specific frame rate on Pro” is speculation.
What both PS5 versions are confirmed to provide in GTA VI
Sony describes GTA VI’s PS5 experience around features that belong to the PS5 platform, not as Pro-exclusive functions. The official description includes:
- SSD-assisted near-instant loading.
- Tempest 3D Audio.
- DualSense haptic feedback.
- DualSense adaptive triggers.
- The controller’s built-in speaker.
Those features are part of the reason Sony presents PS5 as the target for the game. The supplied material does not state that the Pro receives exclusive versions of these functions. Therefore, choosing the standard PS5 does not mean giving up the listed PS5 immersion features.
Will GTA VI run on a regular PS5?
Yes. The regular PS5 is explicitly listed as a GTA VI platform. You do not need PS5 Pro to launch or play the game, and there is no official statement that the standard model is restricted to a reduced campaign, missing gameplay content, or a separate release.
The unknown is comparative performance, not compatibility. Sony has not released a GTA VI-specific comparison that establishes a Pro-only frame rate, a higher resolution, extra ray-tracing effects, or a visual setting unavailable on PS5. The standard PS5 is consequently the sensible purchase when your requirement is simply to play GTA VI on an officially supported console.
What the PS5 Pro Enhanced label means in this case
Confirmed meaning
The label confirms that GTA VI is recognized as a title with PS5 Pro enhancements. It signals that the game can take advantage of Pro capabilities in some form, rather than being listed only as a standard PS5 release.
What the label does not specify
The label is not a performance specification. It does not, by itself, tell you:
- the resolution used in each graphics mode;
- the target or achieved frame rate;
- whether a 30-frame-per-second or 60-frame-per-second mode exists;
- which ray-tracing effects are enabled;
- how PSSR is applied;
- whether image quality changes are visible in every scene; or
- whether loading times differ from the standard PS5.
Those details require a game-specific technical announcement or final testing. Treat the label as evidence of support, not as a promise of a particular result.
PS5 versus PS5 Pro for a GTA VI buyer
| Decision factor | PS5 | PS5 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| GTA VI platform status | Officially listed | Officially listed as PS5 Pro Enhanced |
| US recommended price, effective April 2, 2026 | $649.99 | $899.99 |
| Game-specific GTA VI frame-rate information | Not stated in the cited official material | Not stated in the cited official material |
| Game-specific GTA VI resolution information | Not stated | Not stated |
| Console features Sony highlights | PS5 SSD, Tempest 3D Audio, DualSense haptics, adaptive triggers, and controller speaker support for GTA VI | Those PS5 features plus an upgraded GPU, advanced ray tracing, and PSSR at the system level |
| Risk in buying for GTA VI alone | Low: compatibility is confirmed and the price is lower | Higher: you pay a premium before the game-specific benefit is quantified |
This table separates facts from assumptions. The Pro has broader hardware capabilities, but the official information available does not convert those capabilities into a measured GTA VI advantage.
When the standard PS5 is the better purchase
You only need a guaranteed GTA VI platform
If your requirement is to play the game when it launches, the standard PS5 meets the published platform requirement at the lower price. There is no confirmed content or compatibility penalty attached to that choice.
You want to keep the $250 difference
The $250 saved against the PS5 Pro can cover part of the game purchase, accessories, or another title. That is a concrete saving rather than a speculative performance gain. Remember that the calculation uses Sony’s recommended US prices and that actual retail pricing may differ.
You are buying before technical details arrive
Before Rockstar publishes a Pro-versus-PS5 breakdown, buying the standard model avoids paying for an advantage you cannot yet measure. If later information shows a compelling Pro feature, you can reassess pricing and availability at that time.
When the PS5 Pro can make sense
You value the console beyond GTA VI
The Pro’s upgraded GPU, advanced ray tracing, and PSSR are broader system features. If you expect to play multiple games that use those capabilities and are comfortable with the $899.99 US recommendation, the purchase can be justified as a wider graphics upgrade rather than a GTA VI-only bet.
You deliberately accept uncertainty
A Pro buyer today is paying for confirmed hardware and a confirmed Enhanced label, while accepting that the size of the GTA VI improvement is unknown. That is a rational decision only if the possibility of better image quality or graphics modes is worth the premium without a published guarantee.
You plan to keep the console for years
Long-term ownership can make a hardware premium easier to accept, but it still does not establish how GTA VI will use the Pro. Make the decision on the console’s known capabilities and your broader library, not on an invented GTA VI specification.

The official sources do not identify a GTA VI-specific resolution or frame-rate target for either console. That means your decision should start with priorities rather than an assumed television result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Value first: choose PS5 and spend less for the same listed platform support.
- Maximum potential graphics across games: consider PS5 Pro for its system-level GPU, ray tracing, and PSSR features, while recognizing that individual games vary.
- GTA VI performance certainty: wait for Rockstar or Sony to publish technical details before paying the premium specifically for this game.
- Physical or digital purchasing: compare the console edition and the game’s available format in your region; the cited store page confirms digital editions but does not establish physical retail availability.
A practical buying decision tree
- Do you already own a PS5? If yes, GTA VI is listed for your console, so there is no confirmed compatibility reason to replace it with a Pro.
- Are you buying only to play GTA VI? Choose the standard PS5 unless later official information demonstrates a Pro feature you consider worth $250.
- Do you want upgraded graphics in several supported games? Compare the Pro’s broader feature set with your library and budget. The GTA VI Enhanced label alone does not provide a numerical justification.
- Are you comfortable waiting? Monitor official Rockstar and PlayStation announcements for resolution, frame-rate, ray-tracing, and PSSR details before ordering.
- Have you checked your regional price and edition? Sony’s figures here are US recommendations effective April 2, 2026. Confirm local pricing, taxes, stock, bundle contents, and the game edition shown in your market.
Buying the game and console together
The US PlayStation Store listing shows GTA VI Standard Edition at $79.99 and Ultimate Edition at $99.99. It also displays preorder and GTA+ offer information. Those terms can change, and the listing is not evidence that every physical retailer will carry the same editions.
If you buy a PS5 before the game launches, retain your receipt and review the retailer’s return policy. That is especially useful if final Pro specifications arrive later and change your preference. Do not treat a preorder offer as permanent; verify the live regional page at checkout.
Common mistakes to avoid
Assuming Enhanced means 60 frames per second
No cited Sony material makes that promise. Enhanced status can cover image quality, ray tracing, resolution scaling, or another implementation. Wait for a published specification.
Assuming the standard PS5 is a compromised release
The standard PS5 is an officially listed platform, and Sony describes GTA VI’s PS5 features for that platform. There is no published statement that the regular model loses the game’s core content.
Using an old PS4 as a budget alternative
GTA VI is not listed for PS4 and the PlayStation page states that it will not be playable there. A used PS4 is therefore not a GTA VI solution.
Comparing recommended prices with an unverified sale
Sony’s $649.99 and $899.99 figures are recommended US prices effective April 2, 2026. A temporary retailer promotion can make the gap smaller, while taxes or bundles can make the checkout total larger. Compare like-for-like packages.
Expecting a universal Pro benefit in every game
Sony explicitly says Pro enhancements vary by game. The presence of an upgraded GPU, advanced ray tracing, and PSSR does not mean every title uses all three.
What information would change the recommendation?
The recommendation would become more favorable to PS5 Pro for GTA VI if Rockstar or Sony publishes a clear, game-specific advantage such as a higher-quality mode at the same frame-rate target, a documented ray-tracing improvement, or a measured image-quality benefit that matters to you. Conversely, if the final details show only a minor visual difference, the standard PS5’s lower price becomes even more compelling.
