Short answer: PS5 Pro is sold without an optical disc drive. You can add Sony’s detachable Disc Drive for PS5 separately, but the first pairing with the console requires an internet connection. The console includes a 2 TB custom SSD, supports a compatible M.2 NVMe expansion drive, runs PS5 games and supported PS4 games, and works with most current PS5 accessories. The exact bundle contents and accessory compatibility depend on your market and the model number.
Does the PS5 Pro have a disc drive?
No. PS5 Pro is sold as a disc-free console. The standard package cannot read game or movie discs until you buy the compatible detachable Disc Drive for PS5 separately.
Sony’s 10 September 2024 announcement described PS5 Pro as a “disc-less console” with the option to purchase the Disc Drive separately. Sony’s 7 November 2024 setup guidance confirms that the drive can be used with PS5 Pro. The drive is not included in the normal console box.

Yes. The detachable drive is designed for PS5 Pro and specified PS5 Slim models. After physically attaching it, you must connect the console to the internet so the drive and console can be paired during setup. That online pairing requirement applies even though the drive itself is removable.

What discs does the add-on drive support?
| Disc type | Support |
|---|---|
| Physical PS5 games | Supported |
| Supported physical PS4 games | Supported |
| 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray movies | Supported |
| Blu-ray movies | Supported |
| DVD movies | Supported |
Game compatibility and movie playback are separate questions. A PS4 disc must be one of the PS4 titles supported by PS5, while Blu-ray and DVD playback concerns the disc format rather than a game’s backward-compatibility status.
Is a disc-capable setup better for you?
| Choose the disc-free setup if… | Add the detachable drive if… |
|---|---|
| You buy games digitally and stream or download your video content. | You own physical PS5 or supported PS4 games. |
| You do not need Blu-ray or DVD playback. | You want 4K Blu-ray, Blu-ray, or DVD playback. |
| You prefer the smaller initial hardware purchase and do not need an optical drive now. | You want to lend, resell, trade, or buy used physical discs. |
| You can keep the console online for digital downloads and updates. | You can complete the required internet pairing during installation. |
Sony does not establish a universal current price or stock level for the separate drive in every country. Check the current local Sony or retailer listing before budgeting for it.
How much storage does the PS5 Pro have?
PS5 Pro has a 2 TB custom SSD, according to Sony’s CFI-71XX safety guide and product information. The number describes the built-in drive, not the space available for games. Some capacity is reserved for console administration, maintenance, and additional system options, so the usable figure shown in Settings will be lower and can vary.

What SSD works with PS5 Pro?
PS5 Pro includes an M.2 expansion connector. Sony’s requirements are specific: use a PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe drive with a Key M interface. M.2 SATA drives are not supported.
| Requirement | Sony’s stated specification |
|---|---|
| Interface | PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe |
| Key type | Key M |
| Capacity | 250 GB to 8 TB |
| Supported module sizes | 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110 |
| Cooling | A suitable heatsink or other thermal solution must fit within Sony’s physical limits. |
| Unsupported type | M.2 SATA |
The drive and its heatsink must remain within Sony’s maximum width, length, and thickness limits in the current M.2 installation instructions. A drive that matches the interface and capacity range is not automatically guaranteed to work; Sony explicitly says it cannot guarantee every product that meets the nominal specifications.
Can you use an SSD from a PS5 in a PS5 Pro?
Yes, Sony’s setup guidance says an M.2 SSD already installed in a PS5 can be inserted into PS5 Pro. Remove and install it according to the current PlayStation M.2 installation guide, and verify that the drive, heatsink, and mounting hardware meet the PS5 Pro dimensions. Do not assume that a physically similar drive is compatible if it is SATA, lacks adequate cooling, or exceeds the height limits.
How to install an M.2 SSD
- Turn off PS5 Pro completely, unplug it, and let the console cool.
- Remove the exterior cover and open the M.2 expansion-bay cover using Sony’s current hardware instructions.
- Confirm the drive is a PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe Key M module and that its heatsink fits the permitted dimensions.
- Insert the module at the required angle, lower it into place, and secure it with the supplied spacer and screw position for its length.
- Replace the bay cover and console cover before reconnecting power.
- Start the console and follow the on-screen formatting prompt. Formatting erases the expansion drive, so copy anything important elsewhere first.
The console formats a newly installed expansion drive before it can store games. Keep the M.2 installation instructions available because the cover, screw, spacer, and thermal-clearance details are model-specific.

Are PS4 games compatible with PS5 Pro?
PS5 Pro runs PS5 games and supported PS4 games. Digital titles associated with your account can be downloaded from your library, and supported physical PS4 games can be played when the optional disc drive is attached. A PS4 disc does not work on a disc-free PS5 Pro by itself.
PS5 Pro’s enhanced graphics are not universal automatic upgrades. Sony says improvements vary by game. A title may have a specific PS5 Pro enhancement, a higher-resolution mode, improved ray tracing, a steadier frame rate, or no special enhancement beyond ordinary PS5 compatibility.
What do the headline resolution and frame-rate figures mean?
Sony describes compatible games running at 60 frames per second or up to 120 frames per second with 4K output and ray tracing using PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). “Compatible games” is the important qualification: those figures are capabilities for supported titles, not a promise that every game renders at 4K, 120 fps, or with ray tracing simultaneously.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSony’s compatibility guide also lists ceilings of up to 8K output for select games, up to 4K for media apps, screenshots up to 8K, gameplay clips up to 4K, and Media Gallery content up to 8K. These are maximum supported outputs for applicable content, not a guarantee that every game, app, capture, or display uses the maximum.

Do PS5 accessories work with PS5 Pro?
Sony lists PS5 Pro compatibility with PlayStation VR2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, Access controller, Pulse Elite, and Pulse Explore. Standard DualSense controllers and other supported PS5 peripherals are intended to work as well, although a particular accessory may have its own software or connection requirements.
Which stands, covers, and bases fit?
| Accessory | Compatibility listed by Sony |
|---|---|
| Horizontal stand feet | Compatible |
| Vertical stand | Compatible |
| Compatible Disc Drive cover | Compatible |
| PS5 covers from CFI-1000 models | Incompatible |
| PS5 covers from CFI-2000 models | Incompatible |
| PS5 console base | Incompatible |
Do not use an older cover or base merely because it appears to have the same shape. The model-group distinctions in Sony’s compatibility guide matter, and the PS5 Pro’s exterior dimensions and attachment points are not interchangeable with every earlier PS5 accessory.

PS5 Pro purchase checklist
- Physical library: Add the detachable Disc Drive if you own disc-based PS5 or supported PS4 games.
- Movie playback: Choose the drive if you need 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, or DVD playback.
- Internet at setup: Make sure the console can go online for the drive’s initial pairing.
- Storage plans: Remember that usable built-in space is below 2 TB; select an M.2 PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe Key M drive if you need more.
- Heatsink clearance: Check the complete drive-and-heatsink dimensions, not only the bare SSD label.
- Accessory reuse: Confirm the exact model group before reusing covers or a base; older CFI-1000 and CFI-2000 covers are listed as incompatible.
- Game enhancements: Check each game’s current PS5 Pro support because visual and frame-rate improvements vary by title.
Common setup problems and fixes
The disc drive is attached but discs are not recognized
Confirm the drive is the detachable model specified for PS5 Pro, reconnect the drive firmly, and complete the required internet pairing. A disc-free console will not read physical media until a compatible drive is installed and paired.
The M.2 drive will not format
Recheck that it is NVMe PCIe Gen4x4 rather than M.2 SATA, that its capacity is between 250 GB and 8 TB, and that the module and heatsink fit the supported dimensions. Sony does not guarantee every drive that appears to meet the basic specification.
A game does not show a Pro enhancement
That does not necessarily indicate a console fault. Enhancement behavior is title-specific. Install the game’s latest update, check its in-game graphics options, and confirm that the developer supports a PS5 Pro mode for that title.
