Short answer: choose Performance mode when responsive combat, dodging, aiming, traversal and smooth camera movement matter most. Choose Resolution or Fidelity mode when you prefer sharper detail, denser effects and ray-traced lighting on a large 4K HDR screen.

There is no universal PS5 specification for either setting. Each game chooses its own frame-rate target, resolution technique and visual compromises. Before selecting an advanced 40fps or unlocked option, check whether the game requires a 120Hz display and VRR.

What Performance and Resolution modes actually change

The labels describe a developer’s priority rather than a fixed technical standard. A game may use dynamic resolution, reconstruction, variable frame rate, ray tracing and different effects budgets in ways that are unique to that title. Two games can both offer “Performance” modes but look and feel different.

Aspect Performance mode Resolution/Fidelity mode
Primary goal Higher frame-rate target and quicker motion response Higher image quality and more demanding visual effects
Motion Smoother camera pans, traversal and aiming when the target is maintained More cinematic at the lower target, but movement can appear less fluid
Input response Usually lower input-to-photon delay, which helps timing-sensitive actions Usually more delay than the faster mode because frames arrive less often
Internal resolution Often reduced or more aggressively dynamic to sustain the frame-rate target Usually higher or more stable, although the exact method varies by game
Ray tracing and effects May reduce or disable ray tracing, foliage density, shadows or reflections More likely to retain demanding lighting and geometry features
Best fit Combat, aiming, dodging, platforming and rapid camera movement Slow exploration, environmental detail, cut-scenes and photo mode
Display requirement 60Hz is sufficient for a conventional 30/60fps choice; 120Hz and VRR help with 40fps or unlocked options 60Hz is sufficient for a conventional lower-frame-rate mode; 120Hz and VRR remain useful if the title offers an enhanced option

“Resolution mode” and “Fidelity mode” normally mean the same kind of choice: preserve image quality first. Some games instead use names such as Quality, Cinematic, Graphics, Balanced or Pro. Read the description supplied by the game rather than assuming that a familiar label guarantees a particular frame rate or resolution.

Why the choice is especially noticeable in cinematic action games

Combat and aiming

Action games ask you to read an attack, move the camera, adjust aim and trigger a dodge or parry in a short window. A higher frame-rate target places more images between those actions, so camera motion and enemy movement are easier to track. Lower input-to-photon delay also makes an input appear on screen sooner. That combination is why Performance mode is usually the safer starting point for difficult fights, ranged combat and games with frequent lock-on changes.

The benefit is not simply a larger number in an information panel. It is the consistency of what you see while turning, strafing or following a fast target. If a game cannot maintain its target, uneven frame delivery can be more distracting than a lower but steadier mode. Look for frame pacing in actual play rather than judging the setting from a static menu.

Traversal and camera pans

Open-world traversal exposes motion differences quickly. Sprinting through a dense city, swinging between buildings or rotating the camera around a character creates continuous movement across the screen. Performance mode normally makes that movement clearer. Resolution/Fidelity mode can show more detailed surfaces, foliage, shadows and reflections while the camera is still, but those details may be harder to appreciate during a rapid turn.

Cut-scenes, environments and photo mode

Resolution/Fidelity mode earns its place when you spend time examining architecture, lighting, facial animation and distant scenery. Ray-traced reflections and higher-quality shadows can change the appearance of water, glass and wet streets even when the nominal resolution is not stated. Photo mode is another case where a higher-quality image can matter more than immediate control response. A player who mainly explores, photographs scenes or watches cinematic sequences may prefer the visual mode despite its slower motion.

How frame-rate targets, resolution and reconstruction interact

PS5 games do not always render every frame at a fixed native 4K resolution. To meet a target, a developer may vary internal resolution from moment to moment and reconstruct the final image. Performance mode commonly gives the renderer less time per frame, so it may use a lower internal resolution, simpler effects or a more aggressive dynamic-resolution range. The final picture can still look sharp from the sofa, but fine foliage, hair, distant geometry and particle effects may reveal the compromise.

Fidelity mode gives the renderer more time for each frame. That can support a higher internal resolution, denser geometry, longer draw distances or ray-traced effects. It is not a guarantee that every visual setting is at its maximum, and it does not establish one fixed frame rate across all games. Patches can also add, remove or alter modes after launch.

When a game offers a 40fps mode, it is attempting to sit between the conventional 30fps quality target and a 60fps performance target. A 40fps cadence divides evenly into a 120Hz refresh cycle, which can make motion feel substantially smoother than 30fps while allowing more visual quality than a 60fps target. The game must support that option, and the display normally needs 120Hz input; a 60Hz panel cannot present the same cadence.

Check your display before choosing an advanced mode

Sony says a compatible television can use VRR to adjust its refresh rate in real time, while 120Hz output requires both a display and a game that support 120Hz. The PS5 supports HDMI 2.1 and 4K at 120Hz. Sony recommends the cable included with the console or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable for 4K/120Hz and ALLM connections.

Your setup What it can normally display What to expect
60Hz TV or monitor Conventional 30fps and 60fps modes Performance and Fidelity choices work when the game supports them, but 120Hz-only and many 40fps options are unavailable
120Hz display without VRR 120Hz output when the game and connection support it Can present 40fps or fixed high-frame-rate modes; it cannot compensate for every fluctuation in an unlocked mode
120Hz display with VRR 120Hz output plus a variable refresh range Best match for supported 40fps, unlocked or fluctuating high-frame-rate modes
Older or unsuitable HDMI cable/port May fall back to a lower refresh rate or resolution Use the PS5 cable or an Ultra High-Speed cable and the display’s correct high-bandwidth HDMI port

VRR does not create a performance mode that the game does not provide. It smooths supported variations in frame delivery. Likewise, a 120Hz television cannot turn a 30fps Fidelity mode into a 60fps mode. The title’s implementation remains the deciding factor.

Set up the PS5 and select a mode

  1. Verify the connection. Connect the console directly to a compatible high-bandwidth HDMI input when possible. Use the cable supplied with the PS5 or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable for 4K/120Hz operation.
  2. Check video output. On the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Review the detected resolution and refresh-rate information. Set 120 Hz Output and VRR to Automatic when your display supports them. Enable ALLM if you want the television to switch to its low-latency game mode automatically.
  3. Open the game’s graphics menu. The path is usually Options or Settings > Graphics, Display or Visuals. Labels differ by title, so read the explanatory text beside each mode.
  4. Choose the starting mode. Select Performance for combat-focused play, Resolution/Fidelity for image quality, or a named Balanced, 40fps, High Frame Rate or VRR option if the game explains its requirements.
  5. Reload if requested. Some games apply graphics changes immediately; others reload the checkpoint or restart the application. Let the game complete that process before judging the result.
  6. Test a representative scene. Move the camera quickly, fight a group of enemies, traverse a busy area and pause in a detailed environment. This exposes both responsiveness and visual compromises better than the opening menu.

Do not infer the mode from the console’s global resolution setting. The game can change its internal rendering strategy while the PS5 continues to output a 4K signal.

A practical decision framework

Choose Performance first when control is the priority

  • You play on a 60Hz screen and want the smoothest conventional option the title provides.
  • You frequently dodge, parry, aim at moving targets or make rapid camera corrections.
  • Motion clarity bothers you more than a softer image or reduced reflections.
  • You are playing at a desk or close to the screen, where input response is easy to notice.

Choose Resolution/Fidelity first when the image is the priority

  • You use a large 4K HDR display and sit far enough away that small resolution differences are less important than overall lighting and detail.
  • You spend more time exploring, reading environments or using photo mode than fighting.
  • You specifically want ray-traced reflections, denser shadows, foliage or other effects identified in the game’s description.
  • You find 30fps acceptable and prefer a film-like presentation to faster camera movement.

Try a 40fps, Balanced or VRR mode when the game supports it

These modes are compromises, not universal standards. A 40fps mode can preserve more Fidelity features than Performance while feeling smoother than 30fps, but it generally needs a 120Hz display. A Balanced or VRR mode may use a variable frame-rate range or a different resolution target. Confirm the game’s own explanation and test it in motion; do not assume that “Balanced” means the same thing in another title.

What Sony’s examples show about the trade-off

Horizon Forbidden West

Sony’s PS5 Pro material describes a Pro Performance mode for Horizon Forbidden West that keeps the high frame rate while “massively improving image quality” compared with the stock PS5 Performance mode. Guerrilla Studio Director and Art Director Jan-Bart van Beek said: “For Horizon Forbidden West, that means you can now enjoy a visual quality that matches or surpasses the Quality mode on the regular PlayStation 5, but now at 60 FPS – double the framerate.”

This example illustrates why you should not transfer a mode comparison from one console model to another. On the standard PS5, Performance and Quality remain separate compromises. On PS5 Pro, supported titles can use additional hardware to narrow that gap, but the Pro mode exists only where the developer has implemented it.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Insomniac’s PS5 Pro presentation describes a default Performance Pro mode that “marries the crisp 4K resolution and ray tracing features of Fidelity mode with the speedy 60 frames per second of Performance mode.” That is a developer-defined mode, not proof that every PS5 game can deliver the same combination. It demonstrates the benefit of checking for a title-specific Pro, Balanced or VRR setting instead of assuming you must choose between only two extremes.

PS4 games running on PS5

Sony says selected PS4 games can use Game Boost for improved or more stable frame rates. Games with unlocked frame rates or dynamic resolutions up to 4K may also gain higher fidelity on PS5. This enhancement is separate from a current-generation game’s Performance/Fidelity menu, so a PS4 title may improve automatically without exposing the same switches.

PS5 Pro: narrower gap, not identical results

PS5 Pro can make the choice less severe in supported games by combining visual features with a higher frame-rate target. Sony’s examples show Fidelity-quality features reaching 60fps in selected titles. However, support is patch- and game-dependent. An unenhanced title does not automatically gain a new Pro mode, and a Pro setting can still have its own dynamic resolution or effect compromises.

If you own a PS5 Pro, look for the developer’s description of the Pro modes and compare them with the standard Performance and Fidelity choices. If you own the standard PS5, do not treat a PS5 Pro demonstration as the expected result for your console.

Common problems and how to fix them

The 120Hz or 40fps option is missing

  • Confirm that the television or monitor actually accepts 120Hz at the desired resolution.
  • Use the display’s high-bandwidth HDMI port and the PS5 cable or an Ultra High-Speed cable.
  • In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, check that 120 Hz Output is set to Automatic and that the console detects the display correctly.
  • Check the game’s update notes and graphics menu. Some titles expose the option only after a patch or only when a 120Hz display is detected.

VRR is unavailable or the picture flickers

Enable VRR on both the display and the PS5, then confirm that the connected HDMI input supports it. If flicker appears only in a particular game, disable VRR for that title or use its fixed-frame-rate mode; VRR behavior and supported ranges vary by display and game.

Performance mode looks soft or shimmers

That is a normal possible trade-off of the faster target. Dynamic resolution and reconstruction can become more visible in foliage, thin wires, hair or distant geometry. Switch to Fidelity to decide whether the sharper image is worth the slower response, or try a developer-provided Balanced/VRR mode.

Fidelity mode feels sluggish

Check that the game has not enabled a cinematic frame-rate cap and that the television is in its low-latency game mode. If the lower frame rate still bothers you during combat, use Performance and reserve Fidelity for exploration or photo sessions.

The setting keeps changing after an update

Game patches can alter defaults and add new modes. Reopen the title’s graphics menu after an update and confirm the selected option rather than relying on the console’s previous behavior.

Recommendations by player and screen type

Player or setup Recommended starting point Reason
Competitive or timing-sensitive combat player Performance Prioritizes response and motion clarity during dodges, parries and aiming
Story-focused player on a large 4K HDR TV Resolution/Fidelity Emphasizes lighting, reflections, detail and cinematic presentation
Mixed play on a 60Hz display Performance for action; Fidelity for visual showcases Both conventional modes are available, but 120Hz-only options are not
120Hz VRR display owner Try the game’s 40fps, Balanced or VRR mode These options can combine more visual quality with smoother motion when implemented well
PS5 Pro owner of a supported title Developer’s Pro mode It may combine Fidelity features with a 60fps target, as shown in selected Sony examples
PS4 game on PS5 Check whether Game Boost applies Selected titles can gain steadier frame rates or higher fidelity without the same current-generation mode menu

Make the choice per game, not once for the whole console

Keep a simple rule: if a fight, chase or camera pan is the part you notice most, start with Performance. If you stop to inspect environments or want the most complete lighting and reflection treatment, start with Resolution/Fidelity. Then verify the result on your own display, because distance from the screen, panel response, HDR behavior and personal sensitivity to motion all affect the decision.

There is no requirement to use one mode for an entire playthrough. A title may let you switch between modes at any time, allowing Performance during combat-heavy chapters and Fidelity for exploration or photo mode. Save the setting that makes the game’s dominant activity feel better, and treat every additional 40fps, VRR or Pro option as a title-specific opportunity rather than a guaranteed PS5 feature.
