Choose Performance Mode when responsive, fluid movement is your priority. Choose Resolution Mode when sharper graphics and more visual effects matter more than maximum smoothness. Those labels describe a preference, not a universal frame-rate or resolution guarantee. Each game decides its own targets, rendering techniques and compromises, while your TV or monitor determines which output features are available.
Sony summarizes the distinction as: “Make motion in your game smoother with performance mode, or have higher graphic quality in resolution mode.” The practical choice is therefore personal, but the game’s own description is the final authority.
What the two PS5 modes actually mean
Performance Mode tells a game to spend more of its rendering budget on motion. Depending on the title, that can mean a higher frame-rate target, a steadier frame rate, reduced internal resolution, fewer demanding effects, shorter visual draw distances or selective ray tracing. It does not automatically mean 60 or 120 frames per second, and it does not guarantee that every visual setting is reduced.
Resolution Mode gives the game permission to prioritize image quality. A title may use a higher internal resolution, more detailed lighting, denser effects, longer draw distances or additional ray-traced features. The result can look cleaner or more cinematic, but the game may accept less fluid motion to achieve it. The exact implementation varies by game and sometimes by console model.

PS5 Game Presets expose these choices only for games that provide corresponding modes. Sony warns that a preset may not apply to every game, so a title’s in-game graphics menu takes precedence. Read the wording beside each option instead of assuming that a familiar label has the same technical meaning everywhere.
Neither mode changes the console’s maximum output capability by itself. A game can render internally at one resolution and output a different signal, and a display can accept 4K, 120 Hz or variable refresh rate only when both the hardware and software support those features.
Performance Mode vs. Resolution Mode at a glance
| What you are comparing | Performance preference | Resolution preference |
|---|---|---|
| Primary goal | Smoother or more consistent motion and a more responsive feel. | Higher graphic quality, detail or visual effects. |
| Frame-rate behavior | May offer a higher or steadier target, but the target is title-specific. | May trade some motion smoothness for rendering quality. |
| Resolution and detail | May lower internal resolution or reduce selected settings to meet its performance target. | May raise internal resolution or preserve more demanding settings. |
| Ray tracing and effects | May omit, reduce or selectively use expensive effects. | May include more extensive effects, although the label alone does not guarantee ray tracing. |
| Best fit | Fast action, competitive play, driving, camera-heavy games and players sensitive to judder. | Exploration, slower-paced play, visual showcases and players who prefer maximum detail. |
| Display requirements | 120 Hz or VRR can help in supported titles, but neither feature is enabled simply by selecting this mode. | A compatible 4K display is needed to view a 4K output; the game still controls its internal rendering choice. |

Start with Performance Mode for motion-sensitive games
Choose Performance Mode first when camera movement, aiming, steering or rapid enemy attacks are central to the experience. Smoother frame delivery makes those actions easier to follow and can make controls feel more immediate. This is especially useful in competitive shooters, racing games, character-action titles and any game where you regularly pan the camera quickly.
Look for the game’s wording: some menus identify a target frame rate, while others describe a balanced or high-frame-rate option without promising a fixed number. If the description says that a feature is available only with a 120 Hz display or VRR, treat that as a requirement rather than an automatic benefit.
Start with Resolution Mode for visual-first play
Resolution Mode is the better first try when you spend time examining environments, want the cleanest fine detail, or prefer richer lighting and effects over the smoothest movement. Story-driven adventures, photography-focused games and slower exploration can make those differences easier to appreciate.

Use the game’s preview or description to confirm what is being preserved. “Resolution” may refer primarily to internal image quality, while a separate option may control ray tracing, shadows or other effects. A mode with a higher named resolution is not necessarily the mode with every visual feature enabled.

Choose a hybrid when the title offers one
Some games add a third choice that combines selected visual features with a performance target. These modes are not standardized, so read the complete description before choosing them. A hybrid can be the most useful compromise when you notice a clear visual improvement but do not want the slower response of the most demanding quality setting.
Why the game menu matters more than the preset label
Two games can use “Performance” and “Resolution” while making different compromises. One Performance option might reduce internal resolution but retain ray tracing; another might disable ray tracing and preserve a sharper image. One Resolution option might target a lower frame rate; another could use dynamic techniques to maintain smoother motion. The labels communicate direction, not identical specifications.
Some titles expose options such as Quality, Fidelity, Balanced, 40-fps, High Frame Rate, Ray Tracing or Performance Pro instead of the exact PS5 preset names. Select the option whose written description matches your priority, then verify the result in the game’s graphics or display information screen if one is available.
How to set the PS5 console preset
The console-level preference is useful when you want new games to start with your preferred choice, but it cannot create a mode that a game does not support.
Recommended Free Tools
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Open Game Presets.
- Choose Performance Mode or Resolution Mode.
- Launch the game and open its own graphics or display menu. Confirm that the title accepted the preset and review any game-specific explanation.
Sony documents this path in How to customize game presets on PS5 consoles. The preset applies only to games that offer the corresponding modes, and Sony notes that some settings may not apply to all games.

If the game ignores your selection
- Check whether the title has a separate in-game graphics menu; its setting may override the console preference.
- Look for a third mode or a platform-specific option. The game may not use Sony’s exact Performance/Resolution terminology.
- Confirm that the game is fully updated, because developers can add or revise graphics modes in patches.
- Do not infer a problem from the TV’s signal alone. A 4K output signal does not prove that the game is rendering internally at native 4K.
Display settings that affect what you see
4K output is separate from a game’s rendering mode
PS5 automatically detects a connected display’s capabilities and selects the best available output resolution. To inspect or change the console output, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Sony’s PS5 4K resolution guide explains that 4K output requires a compatible 4K screen and suitable output settings.
This menu controls the signal sent to the display; it does not force a game to use Resolution Mode. A Performance-mode game can output a 4K signal while using a lower internal resolution or reconstruction technique, and a Resolution-mode game can use dynamic resolution rather than a fixed native value. Only the title’s documentation can establish the internal target.
120 Hz output
120 Hz describes the display’s refresh capability, not a promise that a game will render at 120 frames per second. Sony says 120 Hz output is available for displays and games that support 120 Hz. If a game’s Performance option advertises a high-frame-rate mode, check whether it requires a 120 Hz television or monitor and compatible HDMI settings.
Variable refresh rate
VRR synchronizes the display’s refresh timing with the console’s graphical output when the display, connection and game support it. Sony describes VRR support for compatible HDMI 2.1 televisions and monitors and cautions that results vary by display and game. VRR can reduce visible tearing and make uneven frame delivery look smoother, but it does not turn every title into a high-frame-rate game. Details are documented on Sony’s PS5 features page.
Practical display checklist
- Use a 4K display if you want to evaluate a title’s 4K-oriented quality mode at its intended output.
- Use a 120 Hz display only when the game and console output settings support a high-refresh mode.
- Enable VRR on both the display and PS5 when the game lists VRR support, then check the display’s own status indicator.
- Use the display’s low-latency or game picture setting if available; this is separate from the PS5 game preset.
- Compare modes from the same seating distance and during the same scene. A busy outdoor scene can reveal different compromises than a dark interior or a menu.
What current examples show
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart on PS5 Pro
Sony’s PS5 Pro page gives a concrete example of a hybrid implementation. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart offers Performance Pro, which combines the crisp 4K resolution and ray-tracing features associated with Fidelity mode with Performance mode’s 60 frames per second. This is a description of that game, not a standard capability of every PS5 or PS5 Pro title. See PlayStation 5 Pro | Witness Play Unleashed for Sony’s example.
Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5 Pro
CD PROJEKT RED’s April 7, 2026 PlayStation.Blog article describes several named modes for Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5 Pro. Jakub Knapik, the studio’s VP and Global Art Director, called Ray Tracing mode “the sweet spot between visuals and performance.” According to that post:

| Cyberpunk 2077 PS5 Pro mode | Published target or behavior | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Performance | Up to 90 frames per second. | Requires a display with VRR for that stated figure. |
| Ray Tracing | 60 frames per second with selected ray-tracing enhancements. | Title-specific implementation. |

A quick decision framework
- Identify your priority. If you notice stutter, blur during camera pans or delayed-feeling action first, begin with Performance Mode. If you notice missing detail, softer textures or reduced lighting first, begin with Resolution Mode.
- Read the title’s exact description. Record the listed frame-rate target, resolution claim, ray-tracing features and any 120 Hz or VRR requirement.
- Check your display. Confirm 4K, 120 Hz and VRR support in Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and on the display itself.
- Test a representative scene. Use a section with both movement and detail rather than judging from a static pause screen.
- Keep the setting that improves your play. A theoretical advantage is less important than the difference you can actually see and feel on your setup.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming Performance always means 60 fps
Performance is a preference for motion, not a universal number. A game may target 30, 40, 60, 90 or another rate, and may use dynamic behavior. Quote or rely on a specific number only when the developer or game’s menu states it.
Assuming Resolution always means native 4K
Resolution Mode can prioritize image quality without rendering every frame at native 4K. Internal resolution, reconstruction and output resolution are separate concepts. Use the game’s documentation rather than the TV’s “4K” signal label to determine what the renderer is doing.
Buying a 120 Hz display expecting every game to improve
A 120 Hz television or monitor is useful for supported high-refresh modes, but it cannot raise the frame rate of a title that does not offer one. VRR likewise depends on the game and display combination.
Judging from a single screenshot
Resolution differences are easiest to see in fine geometry, foliage, distant signage and moving camera shots, while performance differences are easiest to feel during movement. Compare both in motion and at the same display settings.

For most players who are unsure, Performance Mode is the sensible starting point because motion and control response affect every second of active play. Switch to Resolution Mode when the game’s visual improvements are obvious to you and its motion remains comfortable. If a title provides a documented balanced or hybrid option, evaluate it on its stated targets rather than assuming it is automatically superior.

There is no console-wide winner. The right setting is the one whose documented trade-off matches your game, display and sensitivity to motion or image detail. Keep the console preset aligned with your usual preference, then make exceptions in each game’s own menu when its implementation gives you a better fit.
FAQ
Can I change modes after starting a game?
Usually, yes. Most games place the choice in a graphics, display or video menu, although some require returning to the title screen or restarting after a change. Follow the instruction shown beside the option.
Does a 4K TV force Resolution Mode?
No. The TV determines the output signal it can display; the game’s Performance or Resolution setting determines how the game allocates its rendering budget. You can use Performance Mode on a 4K television.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is Performance Mode worth using on a 60 Hz display?
It can be. A 60 Hz display cannot show a 120 Hz signal, but a game may still deliver steadier motion or a more responsive target below that limit. Check the title’s stated behavior instead of equating Performance Mode with 120 Hz.
Does PS5 Pro guarantee a hybrid mode?
No. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Cyberpunk 2077 demonstrate title-specific hybrid or multi-tier options, but each developer decides which modes to implement.
Why do I see little difference between the settings?
The title may use subtle compromises, dynamic resolution or similar frame-rate targets in both modes. Your seating distance, display size, scene and sensitivity also affect what is visible. Compare a fast camera movement and a detailed scene, and use the game’s written description to understand the intended distinction.
