First determine whether the console has no power at all, is in standby, powers on with no picture, or starts and then stops. Check the power connection and visible signs without opening the case. A PS5 that can start far enough to enter Safe Mode has a different recovery path from one with no indicator; an Xbox Series X should be checked for its power light and fan response before any repair decision.
This guide is limited to safe, external checks and the recovery tools each manufacturer documents. It cannot identify a failed internal power supply, motherboard, storage device or other component. If the console remains unresponsive, the most useful next step is an accurate description of what you observed for Sony or Xbox Support.
Identify what “won’t turn on” actually means
The same description can represent several different faults. Watch the console while pressing its power button and classify the symptom before trying recovery procedures. Make one deliberate press, then give the console a moment to respond instead of repeatedly tapping the button.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| What you observe | What it suggests | Use this path |
|---|---|---|
| No indicator, no fan response and no other sign of operation | A power-delivery problem is possible, but the external checks cannot identify an internal failure. | Check the AC connection, cable condition and outlet, then use the manufacturer’s power-support route. |
| The console shows an indicator or fan activity, but the television remains blank | The console may be running; this is potentially a display or startup problem rather than complete loss of power. | Check the display connection and use recovery options only if the console can reach them. |
| Startup begins and then stops | The console is receiving power but is failing during startup. | Use the applicable recovery environment, if available, and escalate if it cannot complete startup. |
| A PS5 light is orange | The PS5 is in Rest Mode, not fully off. | Wake it with the console or controller; do not remove AC power while the indicator is active. |
These observations are more useful than repeatedly pressing the button. They also prevent a dark television screen from being mistaken for a dead console. A “no picture” symptom should be recorded separately from “no power,” because support will ask whether the console’s light, fan or startup sounds indicate that it is operating.

Safe external checks for either console
- Confirm the power path. Make sure the console’s AC cable is firmly connected to the console and to a functioning power source. Look for cuts, crushed insulation, bent contacts, burn marks or a loose fit. Stop using a visibly damaged cable.
- Press the console’s physical power button once and observe. Note whether an indicator illuminates, changes colour, or stays completely dark. Listen for the fan or other normal startup activity.
- Separate power symptoms from display symptoms. If you hear the fan or see a power light, check the television input and the video connection before concluding that the console has no power. A powered console with no picture follows a different path from a console with no response.
- Do not open the enclosure. The manufacturer guidance supports external checks and service escalation; it does not establish a safe internal diagnosis for home repair.
- Record exactly what happens. A support technician will need to know whether the light is off, white or orange on PS5, whether the Xbox indicator responds, whether the fan starts, and whether the symptom is constant or intermittent.
If you move the console to test it, keep it on a stable surface with its normal ventilation clear. Do not reach into ports, force a connector, or continue using a cable that is hot, scorched or mechanically damaged. These precautions do not diagnose the fault; they simply keep an external check from creating a new one.
A replacement AC cord is reasonable only when the existing cord is damaged or otherwise suspect. Match the replacement to the exact console model and your region’s connector and electrical requirements. A compatible cord is not evidence that the console’s underlying fault will be fixed, so treat it as a conditional replacement rather than a guaranteed repair.
PS5: power-light meanings and first actions
Sony’s PS5 Quick Start Guide defines the console’s status indicators:
| Indicator | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| White | The console is on. | If the television is blank, investigate the display or startup path rather than treating the console as unpowered. |
| Orange | The console is in Rest Mode. | Wake it normally. Keep the AC connection in place while the light is active. |
| Off | The console is off. | Check the AC connection and continue with Sony’s power-issue diagnostic if it will not start. |
The colour is therefore an important first fact to report. Orange does not mean the PS5 has no power, and white does not mean the television must already be showing an image. If the indicator changes during your test, record the sequence and whether the fan or display responds at the same time.
Use Sony’s power diagnostic for a PS5 with no response
For a PS5 that remains unresponsive after the external connection check, follow Sony’s PS5 power-issues troubleshooting page. It directs owners through issue-specific checks and to the PlayStation Repairs diagnostic when the problem persists. The route is preferable to guessing at an internal component because the published material does not provide a consumer test that can identify a failed power supply, board or other internal part.
When you open the support route, describe the exact model if known, the indicator colour (or absence of one), whether the console makes any sound, and whether the condition began suddenly or has been intermittent. That information keeps a no-power case separate from a PS5 that reaches startup but loses video.
Respect the AC-disconnect warning
Do not pull the PS5’s AC cord while its indicator is solid or blinking. Sony’s guide states: “Disconnect the AC power cord from the electricity supply only when the power indicator is off. If you disconnect it while the power indicator is on solidly or blinking, data might be lost or become corrupted, and you might damage your console.” Wait until the indicator is off before disconnecting power for an external check.

This warning matters especially when a screen is blank: a dark television does not prove that the PS5 is off. First verify the console’s own indicator. If it is lit or blinking, leave the AC connection in place while you check the display path or follow an on-screen recovery instruction.
Enter Safe Mode only when the PS5 can power on
Safe Mode is a recovery environment for a PS5 that powers on far enough to produce the required beeps. It is not a remedy for a console that shows no power at all.
- Turn the PS5 off completely.
- Press and hold the power button again.
- Release it after the second beep, approximately seven seconds after the first beep.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable.
- Press the controller’s PS button when prompted.
Sony’s PlayStation 5 support guide lists recovery choices including Repair Console Storage and Update System Software. Select only an option that matches the symptom. Repairing storage or updating software addresses startup problems that reach Safe Mode; neither can supply power to a completely dead console. Reset and reinstall choices can erase user data, so they should not be presented as an early no-power step. Read the on-screen warning for any option that removes data before confirming it.
If the second beep never occurs, the controller cannot connect for the Safe Mode screen, or the console shuts off before the menu appears, stop repeating the procedure. Those observations indicate that the PS5 is not reaching the recovery environment reliably and should be included in a service request.
PS5 turns on but the screen is blank
A white PS5 indicator, fan activity or a successful Safe Mode entry shows that the console is doing more than a completely unpowered unit. Check the television is set to the input used by the console and reseat the video cable at both ends. If the television still shows no image, use Safe Mode’s display-related recovery options as described in Sony’s support guide. Do not disconnect AC power while the indicator is lit or blinking.
Keep the diagnosis focused: note whether the television reports no signal, remains black while the console light stays white, or briefly shows startup and then loses the image. Each description is more actionable than simply saying the PS5 “doesn’t work.” Avoid jumping to a data-erasing reset merely because the screen is blank; first use the display and recovery choices that do not remove user data.
If the PS5 cannot produce the second beep, cannot keep its indicator on, or repeatedly falls back to a blank screen after the external checks, stop treating it as a simple display selection problem. Sony’s power-issues page and PlayStation Repairs diagnostic are the appropriate escalation route. Repair or warranty eligibility depends on the individual console and region; Sony’s support pages do not guarantee coverage for every unit.

Xbox Series X: checks Microsoft’s service guidance supports
Microsoft’s Xbox Series X Console Safety & Repair Instructions uses a hardware-troubleshooting approach built around observable signs:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Connect the Series X to a power source.
- Press the console’s power button.
- Check whether the power indicator responds.
- Check whether the fan operates.
- Pay attention to unusual fan noises or other abnormal sounds.
Perform the checks in that order and write down the result of each one. A light with no picture, a fan that starts and stops, and total silence are different reports. None of them, by itself, identifies a particular failed internal part.
These checks help distinguish a console that receives power from one that shows no external response. They do not prove which internal component has failed. If the indicator and fan remain inactive after confirming the connection, use Xbox Support for the current device-troubleshooting route rather than opening the console.
Check software status before hardware repair
Microsoft’s service guidance warns that the device should be fully up to date before hardware repair, because a software update may resolve the reported issue. If the Series X can start far enough to reach its menus, install any available system update through the normal console settings before pursuing hardware service. If it cannot start or display anything, do not invent an update procedure; tell support that the update check was impossible.
This check applies only when the console is usable enough to reach its settings. It is not a reason to keep forcing a console that immediately shuts down, and it does not replace the external power and indicator checks.
Do not apply an undocumented power-cycle sequence
The current consumer Xbox support page specifying a particular power-cycle button sequence and wait interval was not established in the manufacturer material used here. Therefore, do not rely on a precise timed interval or claim that a specific combination of buttons is an official fix. Use the observable power checks above and Xbox Support’s instructions for your console and region.
Xbox Series X turns on but produces no picture
If the Series X indicator or fan responds but the television remains blank, treat the symptom as “powered on, no display” rather than “no power.” Confirm the television input and the video connection, then describe the indicator and fan behavior when contacting Xbox Support. Microsoft’s service document does not provide a consumer display-recovery sequence in the guidance cited here, so avoid presenting an unverified button sequence as a guaranteed fix.

Record whether the fan keeps running, whether the indicator remains on, and whether the television ever detects a signal. If the console starts and then stops, mention when the shutdown occurs and whether the fan makes an unusual noise. That information helps support distinguish a startup failure from a power connection problem. Persistent symptoms should be handled through Xbox Support or an authorized service route rather than an internal disassembly attempt.
PS5 and Xbox Series X: what you can compare safely
The useful comparison is not which console is easier or cheaper to repair; the cited manufacturer material does not establish reliability, repair difficulty, typical costs or average repair times. Compare the observable decision points instead:

| What indicates operation? | White means on; orange means Rest Mode; off means off. | Check the power indicator and fan response. |
| What if the television is blank? | Treat it as possible display or startup trouble if the light or fan responds; Safe Mode may help if reachable. | Treat it as powered-on/no-display when the indicator or fan responds; report those signs to Xbox Support. |
| What recovery path is documented? | Safe Mode can offer Repair Console Storage and Update System Software. | Check for updates if menus are accessible, then follow Xbox Support’s current route. |
| When should you escalate? | No response after external checks, failure to reach Safe Mode, or persistent no-picture/startup symptoms. | No indicator or fan after connection checks, unusual sounds, shutdown during startup, or persistent no-picture symptoms. |
When to stop troubleshooting and request service
- The console shows no indicator or fan response after the AC connection and external-source checks.
- The AC cable or connector is visibly damaged, loose or heat-marked.
- The console repeatedly starts and stops, or the fan makes unusual noises.
- A PS5 cannot reach Safe Mode, or Safe Mode recovery options do not resolve a startup failure.
- The console powers on but continues to provide no picture after the external display checks.
- You would need to remove the enclosure to continue.
Before contacting support, gather the console model, region if relevant, purchase or service details you have available, and a concise timeline. State what happened when you pressed the button, which indicator appeared, whether the fan ran, whether a television signal appeared, and which non-destructive checks you completed. Do not claim that a cable replacement or update fixed anything unless you actually observed a change.
For PS5, begin with Sony’s power-issues page and its PlayStation Repairs diagnostic. For Xbox Series X, use Xbox Support and provide the exact light, fan and startup behavior. Neither manufacturer’s general guidance establishes a universal repair price, repair time or warranty outcome; those depend on the console, country and service assessment.
A short decision checklist
- No light and no fan: verify the power connection and cable condition, then escalate through the relevant manufacturer support route.
- PS5 orange light: it is in Rest Mode; wake it normally and do not remove AC power while the light is active.
- White PS5 light or Xbox activity with no picture: check the display path and use recovery only if the console can reach it.
- PS5 reaches Safe Mode: connect the controller by USB and consider Repair Console Storage or Update System Software; avoid data-erasing resets unless you understand the consequences.
- Xbox starts far enough for settings: check for system updates before hardware repair.
- Failure persists or hardware damage is visible: stop experimenting and provide the manufacturer with your observations.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell whether my PS5 is actually off?
Sony’s PS5 guide says white means the console is on, orange means Rest Mode, and no light means it is off. A blank television does not by itself prove that the PS5 has no power.
Can I unplug a PS5 while its light is blinking?
No. Sony warns that the AC cord should be disconnected only when the power indicator is off. Unplugging while it is solid or blinking can cause data loss or corruption and may damage the console.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Will PS5 Safe Mode fix a console with no power?
No. Safe Mode requires the console to power on far enough to produce the second beep. It is intended for startup problems that reach the recovery screen, not a PS5 with no indicator or response.

Which PS5 Safe Mode options are relevant before a reset?
Sony lists Repair Console Storage and Update System Software. These are different from reset or reinstall choices, which can erase user data. Read each warning and choose only an option that matches the symptom.
What should I check on an Xbox Series X that will not start?
Confirm the AC connection, press the power button, and observe the power indicator and fan. Note unusual fan noises. If there is still no response, use Xbox Support rather than opening the enclosure.
Should I perform a timed Xbox power-cycle sequence?
Do not rely on a precise button sequence or wait interval unless it is provided by the current Xbox Support instructions for your console and region. The documented checks are the external power, indicator and fan observations.
Recommended Free Tools
Is a replacement power cord likely to fix the problem?
Only consider one when the existing cord is damaged or otherwise suspect, and match the exact console model and regional connector requirements. A compatible cord does not establish that an internal fault will be resolved.
How much will repair cost, and how long will it take?
Sony and Microsoft’s general troubleshooting guidance does not establish a universal price, turnaround time or warranty result. Eligibility and service terms depend on the individual console, country and assessment.
The Bottom Line
Start by separating no power from no picture: check the AC connection, indicator and fan without opening the console. On PS5, white means on, orange means Rest Mode, and Safe Mode is available only when the console can reach it; never unplug while the indicator is lit or blinking. On Xbox Series X, document the power-light and fan response, check for updates if the menus work, and avoid undocumented button sequences. If the console remains silent, repeatedly stops, shows unusual sounds or cannot restore an image, use Sony PlayStation Repairs or Xbox Support.
