Short answer: a compatibility layer or porting tool adapts a game to Windows or Linux by translating interfaces and replacing console services, while an emulator recreates enough of the PlayStation hardware and operating-system environment for the original console program to run. The boundary is not absolute: a project can translate graphics APIs, reimplement system libraries and emulate selected hardware behavior at the same time.
That distinction matters because a technical milestone such as complete shader-instruction recognition is not the same as a playable PS5 game. AnyPS5 describes itself as an automatic PS5 executable-porting tool, whereas shadPS5 describes itself as an in-development PS5 emulator. Their goals, implementation burden and current evidence are different.
Compatibility layer and emulator: the practical distinction
What a compatibility layer changes
A compatibility layer assumes that much of the game can run on the host computer, but the game expects console-specific interfaces. The layer translates or replaces those interfaces so the executable can use the host operating system and hardware.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- System libraries: console functions for files, threads, input, networking, timing and memory are reimplemented with host equivalents.
- Executable format and linking: a porting tool may relink or transform the console executable into a native Windows or Linux format.
- Graphics: shader instructions, command streams and resource behavior are translated to APIs and drivers available on the PC.
- CPU behavior: code may run natively when the instruction set and calling conventions are compatible, or selected instructions may be translated when they are not.
The result is closer to a port than to a virtual PlayStation. The game is being adapted to the host rather than running inside a complete software replica of the console.

What an emulator recreates
An emulator presents software with a model of the target machine. It normally has to reproduce the behavior that game code observes from the CPU, GPU, memory system, operating-system services, storage, controllers, timers and other devices. The game continues to believe it is running on a PlayStation, while the emulator maps those operations to PC hardware.
Some emulators use just-in-time recompilation to translate blocks of console CPU code into host instructions. Others interpret code, translate graphics commands, or combine native host services with emulated devices. A modern emulator therefore does not have to simulate every transistor or run every operation at the original clock rate, but it must reproduce enough externally visible behavior for each game.
Why the categories overlap
“Compatibility layer” and “emulator” describe dominant strategies, not mutually exclusive engineering rules. A porting project can emulate a small hardware component, and an emulator can use host-native libraries or translated shaders for speed. The useful question is not which label sounds purer; it is which parts of the PS5 environment are translated, which are recreated, and what games actually do on a given build.
How AnyPS5 positions itself
The AnyPS5 repository describes the project as a tool for automatic PS5 executable porting to Linux and Windows. Its stated approach is to relink an executable into the host’s native format and provide implementations of PS5 system libraries. The project explicitly says there is no emulation or separate runtime process.
That makes “porting and translation layer” the clearest description of AnyPS5, rather than “a conventional full-system PS5 emulator.” The distinction does not mean that the project avoids complex translation. Its graphics work still includes decoding and translating shader instructions and reproducing console-specific graphics behavior. Those components can resemble emulation internally even when the overall product is a native port.
What the 1,166-of-1,166 shader figure means
AnyPS5’s progress tracker, checked on 13 October 2026, reports 1,166 of 1,166 tracked RDNA 1 and RDNA 2 shader instructions recognized by its decoder. The tracker defines an implemented instruction as one recognized by the decoder.

This is a decoder-recognition milestone. It does not establish that every instruction is translated correctly in all contexts, that all PS5 GPU behavior is implemented, that shaders render correctly, or that a large set of games is playable. A decoder can identify an instruction while later translation, resource handling, synchronization, precision or driver interaction remains incomplete.

What has been shown to run
Tom’s Hardware reported on 10 October 2026 that Dreaming Sarah was the one verified playable title on AnyPS5’s compatibility list at that time. That is a dated snapshot, not a permanent compatibility guarantee. A title can change status as the project, game build, drivers or host operating systems change, and a game listed as booting is not necessarily playable from start to finish.
How shadPS5 differs
shadPS5 describes itself as an in-development PS5 emulator and says it is not ready for playing games because it is still building the core emulation layer. Its stated objective is therefore broader than translating a particular set of interfaces for a native port: it is constructing a software model of the PS5 environment against which console code can execute.
That model must eventually account for the interactions among CPU execution, graphics, memory, operating-system services, storage and peripherals. Progress in one subsystem does not automatically make games boot, render or remain stable. The project’s own feature and hardware statements are project claims, so readers should not treat them as independent validation or as a promise of a working game library.
Why shadPS4 is useful context—but not PS5 evidence
shadPS4 is a PS4 emulator, not a PS5 emulator. Its maintainers describe it as early in development, warn that users should not expect a flawless experience and list individual games it can run. It illustrates the kind of incremental work involved in a PlayStation emulator, but its progress cannot be used to claim that PS5 games can be emulated.
The same terminology question arises with both generations: how much is translated, how much is recreated, and which game-specific behaviors are implemented? The answer for a PS4 project does not transfer automatically to PS5 because the target hardware and software interfaces differ.

How to judge a compatibility claim
Do not reduce compatibility to one percentage or a single screenshot. Use a staged set of questions, because each stage represents a different engineering result.
- Does the program load? A launcher or executable starting proves that some loader, linking and initialization paths work.
- Does it reach a menu? This adds working input, graphics initialization, file access and more system services.
- Does it render a scene? Rendering requires correct shader translation, resource formats, command processing, synchronization and driver behavior.
- Can it progress through gameplay? This tests streaming, saves, audio, timing, networking where applicable and less frequently exercised code paths.
- Is it playable for a meaningful session? Stability, frame pacing, missing effects, crashes and controls matter as much as booting.
A project tracker should be read with those distinctions in mind. “Recognized,” “implemented,” “boots,” “reaches menu,” “renders” and “playable” are not interchangeable labels.
Compare implementation scope, not headline percentages
For a technical comparison, ask whether the project translates CPU instructions, graphics commands and system libraries, or recreates those components as virtual devices. Then ask how much of the console’s operating-system behavior must be implemented before the target game can leave its startup path. A high count in one subsystem can coexist with missing work in another.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

The available evidence does not provide an independently reproduced benchmark that supports a general speed ranking between AnyPS5, shadPS5 or other experimental projects. Instruction recognition is not a frame-rate measurement, and a game that reaches a menu may still be unusably slow or unstable. Performance must be assessed per game, build, driver and host configuration.
What this means if you want to play PS5 games on a PC
For a dependable experience, use an official PC version
Sony’s PC Games FAQ states: “PC and console versions of PlayStation Studios games are different products.” Sony also says a PC version cannot currently be used on PS4 or PS5 and vice versa, and that saves cannot currently transfer between those versions.
That means an official PC release is a separate purchase and product path, not a method for using a console license on a computer. Check the individual game’s current store listing, system requirements, online-service terms and save-transfer policy before buying. Sony’s direct PC purchase FAQ says voucher codes are redeemed on Steam.

- Install the PC build and use the game’s own save and account instructions. Do not assume that a PS5 save will appear on PC.
Experimental projects are not a general PS5 solution
AnyPS5’s dated compatibility evidence did not support describing it as a general way to play PS5 games on a PC. The project may be valuable to developers and technically curious users, but a shader-decoder milestone and one reported playable title are not equivalent to a broad consumer-ready library.
shadPS5 is even more clearly an experimental development project according to its own description: it says it is not ready for playing games. Installing an emulator or porting tool therefore should be treated as software development or experimentation, not as a guaranteed replacement for an official PC release.
Controller expectations
Sony’s PC support information lists DualSense and other PlayStation controllers as supported peripherals. It says PlayStation Studios PC games support multiple input options, while specific features vary by title. Sony’s direct PC FAQ says DualSense works for PlayStation Studios PC games through a wired connection; wireless operation and DualSense-specific features vary.
For an official PC release, a DualSense controller is optional. Confirm support for adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, speaker output and wireless pairing in the individual game’s documentation. Nothing in the project descriptions establishes DualSense as required for AnyPS5 or proves that an experimental emulator supports every DualSense feature.

“All shaders are recognized, so every game should work.”
No. The 1,166-of-1,166 figure is decoder recognition for the tracked RDNA 1 and RDNA 2 instruction set. Correct translation, graphics resource handling, synchronization and game-specific system calls still determine whether a title renders and remains playable.
“A porting layer is just an emulator with a different name.”
Not necessarily. AnyPS5 says it relinks executables and supplies native system-library implementations without a separate emulation runtime. It can still contain translation or emulation-like components, particularly in graphics, but its overall architecture is presented as native porting.

“A PS4 emulator’s compatibility list predicts PS5 progress.”
It does not. shadPS4 targets different hardware and software interfaces. Its working titles demonstrate PS4 project progress only.
“Booting means playable.”
Booting is the first checkpoint. Menus, rendering, gameplay, saving, audio, streaming and stability must be tested separately.
“A console purchase automatically grants the PC version.”
Sony explicitly treats PlayStation Studios PC and console versions as different products. Verify the game’s current PC edition and purchase terms.

- You want to play now: choose an officially released PC edition when one exists, and verify its current requirements and save policy.
- You want to study porting techniques: AnyPS5’s stated native relinking and system-library approach is the relevant model to examine, with the understanding that game compatibility remains experimental and title-specific.
- You want to study console emulation: shadPS5 is the project in this comparison that labels itself a PS5 emulator, but its own status statement says it is not ready for playing games.
- You are evaluating a compatibility report: record the project build, game version, operating system, GPU, driver, result stage and any graphical or stability faults instead of citing a single percentage.
What to check as projects change
PS5 compatibility work is fast-moving. Before relying on a claim, check the project’s current repository, compatibility tracker and release notes rather than an undated video or repost. Record the date because a title’s status can improve, regress or change when a game, driver or project build changes.
For AnyPS5 specifically, distinguish the tracker’s decoder-recognition count from verified game outcomes. For shadPS5, read the project’s current readiness statement. For shadPS4, keep its PS4 scope separate from PS5 claims. For official PC releases, use Sony’s current PC support and game-store information because product availability, controller features and platform policies can change.
Bottom line
A compatibility layer adapts software to the host; an emulator recreates the target system closely enough for unmodified console code to run. AnyPS5 presents itself as a PS5 executable-porting and translation project, while shadPS5 presents itself as a PS5 emulator still building its core. The reported 1,166/1,166 shader-recognition milestone is meaningful engineering progress, but it is not proof of complete PS5 GPU support or broad playability. If your priority is playing a game reliably on PC, use its official PC edition when available; treat experimental projects as per-game, rapidly changing development efforts.
