Linux can run on jailbroken PS5 Phat and Slim consoles, but only on specific firmware and only through a repeatable soft-mod exploit. The public ps5-linux project lists support through firmware 7.61, including the July 2026-era 7.60 and 7.61 releases. Firmware 8.00 and newer is not supported. A 64GB-or-larger USB drive, USB keyboard and mouse are required; an external SSD is preferred, while a compatible internal M.2 SSD is optional and becomes Linux-only storage.

What PS5 Linux supports now

The ps5-linux project describes a Linux environment for both PS5 Phat and PS5 Slim hardware. Its current README advertises 4K video at 60Hz over HDMI, audio, USB peripherals, Ethernet and Bluetooth support, plus storage on an M.2 Linux partition. The listed hardware is an eight-core, 16-thread CPU running at 3.5GHz with a 2.23GHz GPU.

Firmware eligibility is the first and most important check. The project lists the following versions:

Firmware family Versions listed as supported Status
3.x 3.00, 3.10, 3.20, 3.21 Supported by the project
4.x 4.00, 4.02, 4.03, 4.50, 4.51 Supported by the project
5.x 5.00, 5.02, 5.10, 5.50 Supported by the project

7.x 7.00, 7.01, 7.20, 7.40, 7.60, 7.61 Supported, including the July 2026-era releases
8.00 and newer Not listed Unsupported by the project

Do not update an eligible console casually. Sony can patch the vulnerabilities used by these procedures, and a newer system version can remove eligibility.

How the jailbreak-to-Linux boot process works

This is a soft mod rather than a permanent alternate operating system. You prepare a Linux image on USB, run the exploit matching the console’s exact firmware, send the ps5-linux loader payload, and power-cycle into Linux. After a reboot, the exploit must be run again; there is no permanent dual-boot menu.

Firmware 3.00 through 5.50

The project’s documented route uses a fake-DNS configuration and the PS5 user-manual entry point to launch the umtx2 exploit. The DNS and browser-style steps are firmware-sensitive, so instructions written for one release should not be assumed to work on another.

Firmware 6.00 through 7.61

The documented route uses Y2JB followed by a kernel-exploit payload. Payload formats, offsets and launch steps can change as vulnerabilities are analyzed or patched. Verify that a guide explicitly names your firmware before sending anything to the console.

What a successful boot looks like

  • The exploit completes without a system crash or forced recovery.
  • The loader starts the prepared Linux image from USB or the configured Linux storage.
  • HDMI output, USB input and networking are detected by the Linux build you installed.
  • A normal reboot returns to the PS5 system software, requiring the exploit again for another Linux session.

Storage and peripherals you actually need

Item Requirement Practical implication
USB drive At least 64GB Required for preparing and booting Linux; an external SSD is recommended for better convenience and responsiveness.
USB keyboard and mouse Required USB dongles are supported, so wireless sets that use a compatible receiver can work.
PS5-compatible M.2 SSD Optional Provides dedicated Linux storage, but the project says an M.2 assigned to Linux cannot simultaneously store PS5 games.
USB WLAN adapter Optional Useful if the selected Linux build lacks the needed support for the console’s normal wireless path.
Bluetooth dongle Optional Can add Bluetooth connectivity where the build or hardware configuration needs it.

The USB-only approach avoids reallocating an internal drive and is the simplest way to experiment. An M.2 installation is more convenient for regular Linux use, but it consumes that drive’s capacity exclusively for Linux until you remove or reconfigure it.

Can a jailbroken PS5 play PC games?

Linux on the PS5 is capable of running a desktop game stack, and the ps5-linux README claims enough performance for Steam games and emulators. That is a capability claim, not a compatibility guarantee. Actual results depend on the Linux graphics driver, kernel, Proton version, game engine, anti-cheat system and each title’s settings.

Steam and Proton

Expect a game-by-game process: install the Linux driver and Proton configuration required by the distribution, test the title, and keep a fallback plan for games that fail to launch or have broken input, video or anti-cheat. The PS5’s AMD-based hardware does not make every Windows game automatically compatible.

Prosper: experimental PS5-binary compatibility

Prosper is a separate experimental project for running PS5 binaries on Linux, Windows and macOS. Its documentation says it reimplements the PS5 operating system, application binary interface and GPU stack; it is not a conventional CPU emulator and is “not a general-purpose game runner yet.” Its title results remain incomplete, so a demonstration should not be read as broad PS5-game support.

AnyPS5 progress reports

A Tom’s Hardware report dated October 10, 2026 said AnyPS5’s tracker listed all 1,166 of 1,166 tracked AMD RDNA shader instructions, while noting that instruction recognition is not the same as complete GPU support. The same report listed 2,578 of 3,044 declared system-library functions implemented, or 84.69%, and one verified playable title. These are implementation milestones, not evidence that the PS5 library runs on a PC.

Mihawk OS/PP

Windows Central reported on October 10, 2026 that Mihawk OS/PP, also called PS5 Proton, was being developed to run 32-bit and 64-bit Windows games on a jailbroken PS5. Broader performance and compatibility were still unknown, so current demonstrations represent experimental bring-up rather than a supported replacement for a Windows gaming console.

Phat versus Slim, USB versus M.2: choosing a setup

Decision What is established Trade-off
PS5 Phat or Slim The project lists both families. Firmware eligibility matters more than the chassis name; check the exact installed version.
USB storage 64GB minimum; external SSD preferred. Simple and reversible, but it leaves Linux dependent on an attached drive.
Internal M.2 Optional Linux storage. Faster, integrated storage, but the drive cannot also be used for PS5 game storage while assigned to Linux.
Steam/Proton gaming Possible according to the project, with title-specific results. Driver, Proton and anti-cheat compatibility can prevent a game from working.
Online services Jailbreak activity conflicts with Sony’s stated software rules. Using modified software can create account, service-access and support risks.

Legal and online-service limits

Sony’s PS5 software licence says users may not use unauthorized or modified hardware or software, bypass PS5 encryption, security or authentication, downgrade system software, or use unauthorized software. A jailbreak can therefore conflict with the licence and may affect access to online services. Keep Linux experimentation separate from any account or console whose online access you cannot afford to lose, and review the current licence for your region before proceeding.

Pre-flight checklist

  1. Open the PS5 system-information screen and record the exact firmware version.
  2. Confirm that version appears in the ps5-linux support list; 8.00 or newer is not listed as supported.
  3. Prepare a USB drive of at least 64GB, preferably an external SSD, and have a USB keyboard and mouse ready.
  4. Decide whether Linux should use USB storage or a compatible M.2 drive, remembering that an M.2 assigned to Linux is not PS5 game storage.
  5. Use the exploit route that matches the firmware family: umtx2 via fake DNS and the user manual for 3.00–5.50, or Y2JB plus the kernel payload for 6.00–7.61.
  6. Expect to repeat the exploit after every reboot; do not expect a permanent dual-boot installation.
  7. For games, test individual titles under the available Linux drivers and Proton rather than assuming that PC or PS5 compatibility is universal.
