Short answer: PS4 homebrew support is more established and concentrated around a handful of documented GoldHEN firmware versions. PS5 support is split between projects: the Relapse-Exploit documentation lists firmware 7.00 through 13.60, while the separate ps5-hen documentation covers homebrew and PS4 FPKG support only through 4.51 and records important stability limits. Neither range means that every payload, feature, or game works on every listed system.

A PS5 playing an ordinary PS4 game is a different question. Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on an unmodified PS5, with some titles still showing errors or losing functionality. That official backward compatibility does not prove that a jailbreak works, and a jailbreak-supported firmware does not guarantee compatibility with every PS4 or PS5 game.

Start by recording the exact firmware on your console. Then match that version to the documentation for the specific exploit and payload you intend to use, while treating homebrew support, PS4 package support, PS5 game support, and official PS4 backward compatibility as separate claims.

What the comparison actually measures

The word jailbreak hides several technical layers. Comparing a PS4 and a PS5 is useful only when those layers are kept separate:

#1 Best Overall
PlayStation®5 Digital Edition (slim)
  • Model Number CFI-2000
  • Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
  • Vertical Stand sold seperately
  • Entry exploit: the publicly documented method that reaches a vulnerable software component on a particular firmware.
  • Kernel-level access: the deeper privilege needed by many system modifications. An entry point alone does not imply that this level is available or reliable.
  • Homebrew enabler or HEN: a payload that lets unsigned homebrew applications run after the exploit has succeeded.
  • Feature payloads: separate components for functions such as package installation, external-drive access, or rest-mode behavior.
  • Game compatibility: whether a specific PS4 or PS5 title runs. This is not established merely because an exploit or HEN supports the console firmware.

A project can document an exploit across a wide firmware interval while a particular HEN supports only a subset, or while an individual homebrew application works on just one release. Firmware numbers therefore describe a starting point for investigation, not a universal compatibility guarantee.

Check the installed firmware before doing anything else

Firmware is the first decision variable. Record the complete number, including trailing components such as 10.00 versus 10.01, before comparing your console with any project documentation.

  1. On PS5, open Settings.
  2. Select System, then System Software.
  3. Open Console Information and note the version shown there.
  4. On PS4, open Settings.
  5. Select System, then System Information, and record the exact version.

Do not infer the version from the console’s purchase date, model number, a game disc, or a screenshot from another machine. Two otherwise identical consoles can have different exploit prospects because one was updated and the other was not.

PS4 jailbreak and homebrew support

The consulted GoldHEN release documentation lists these PS4 firmware targets:

PS4 firmware listed by GoldHEN What the project documentation associates with the release How to interpret it
5.05 Homebrew-enabler support; the release page also lists package installation, rest mode, external HDD support, and an update block among its features. A documented target for that GoldHEN release, not proof that every PS4 application works.
6.71 / 6.72 Homebrew-enabler support and the project’s listed feature set. Check the exact payload and release notes for the installed sub-version.
9.00 Homebrew-enabler support and the project’s listed feature set. Match the payload to 9.00 rather than assuming nearby versions are equivalent.
9.60 Homebrew-enabler support and the project’s listed feature set. Use documentation for the precise release you plan to load.
10.00 / 10.01 Homebrew-enabler support and the project’s listed feature set. 10.00 and 10.01 are listed together, but that does not make all later 10.xx firmware interchangeable.
11.00 Homebrew-enabler support and the project’s listed feature set. 11.00 is the highest PS4 version listed on the consulted page; newer versions are not established by that page.

The GoldHEN page specifically describes homebrew enabling, remote package installation, rest-mode support, external hard-drive support, and a firmware-update block. Those are project-specific features. They should not be generalized to every jailbreak method, every GoldHEN build, or every homebrew application.

Why PS4 owners should read the release notes

A firmware number is necessary but not sufficient. Confirm that the release you are reading names your exact version, then check whether the payload has the feature you need. For example, a release that can enable homebrew may not provide the same rest-mode behavior as another build, and a package-installation feature does not establish that every package is compatible with your console or firmware.

An update block can help preserve a documented firmware state, but it is not a guarantee that the console will never change. Treat it as one feature of the payload and continue to verify the version in System Information after maintenance, repairs, or other software changes.

PS5 jailbreak support is divided by firmware and payload

There is no single PS5 jailbreak range that answers every question. Two documented projects illustrate the split:

Project documentation Firmware range or ceiling stated Documented scope Documented limitations
Relapse-Exploit README 7.00 through 13.60 An exploit project’s stated firmware support range. The range does not promise that one HEN, homebrew application, package, or game works identically throughout it.
ps5-hen README Through 4.51 Homebrew support and PS4 FPKG support are documented through this firmware level. Multiple-FPKG crashes are recorded, and rest mode is not supported.

The apparent gap between 4.51 and 7.00 is not a typo to be filled in by assumption. It reflects different projects and different layers of support. The ps5-hen documentation is evidence for its own ceiling and features; the Relapse-Exploit README is evidence for that exploit’s stated range. Neither document converts the other project’s claims into a universal PS5 compatibility table.

Exploit range versus usable homebrew system

Suppose a console is on a firmware inside Relapse-Exploit’s 7.00–13.60 range. That tells you the project considers the exploit applicable there. You still need to establish which payload can be loaded afterward, whether the payload is stable on that exact version, and whether the homebrew application you want has been adapted to it. A successful entry exploit can therefore coexist with missing or unreliable features.

Conversely, a console at or below 4.51 may fit the ps5-hen documentation for homebrew and PS4 FPKG support, yet still encounter the documented multiple-FPKG crashes or the lack of rest-mode support. A lower firmware number is not automatically a better experience; it is simply a different support branch.

What homebrew features mean in practice

Homebrew support usually means that unsigned applications can be launched after the relevant exploit and enabler have run. It does not mean that the console has become a general-purpose PS5 development platform, nor that every application has the same access to storage, graphics, networking, or system services.

The documented PS4 GoldHEN features give a useful example of this distinction:

  • Homebrew enabling: the core ability to run compatible unsigned applications.
  • Remote package installation: a convenience for transferring and installing packages over a network connection. It does not establish that every package is safe, legal to use, or compatible.
  • Rest mode: the project lists support, but rest-mode behavior remains specific to the payload and firmware combination.
  • External HDD support: the payload lists external hard-drive support for its own functions. This is not a claim that any drive works for every PS4 or PS5 storage role.
  • Firmware-update block: a mechanism intended to help retain a supported system version; verify the actual installed version rather than relying on the setting alone.

On PS5, the ps5-hen documentation records the opposite kind of information: multiple-FPKG crashes and no rest-mode support. Limitations are as important as feature lists because they determine whether a modified console is practical for daily use.

Can a jailbroken PS5 run PS4 games?

There are three different answers, depending on what you mean by run.

Official PS4 games on an unmodified PS5

Sony states that the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 games are playable on PS5 consoles. The statement concerns normal, supported backward compatibility. Sony also warns that some titles may show errors or lose functionality, so the figure is not a promise of identical performance or features for every game.

Compatible USB storage can be used to access PS4 games and game data on PS5. This is an ordinary console-storage feature, not evidence of a jailbreak and not a way to expand every category of PS5 storage. Check the console’s compatibility requirements for the specific drive and role you intend to use.

PS4 package support through a PS5 payload

The ps5-hen documentation states support for PS4 FPKG files through PS5 firmware 4.51. That is a jailbreak-dependent feature with a defined firmware ceiling and known limitations. It should not be conflated with Sony’s official backward compatibility, and it should not be extended to firmware versions that the documentation does not list.

The same documentation records crashes when multiple FPKG files are involved. If a setup appears to work with one package but fails when several are installed or launched, that behavior is consistent with the project’s stated limitation rather than proof that the console or game is permanently damaged.

PS5 games and PS5 firmware

PS5 game support is a separate question again. An exploit range does not show that a particular PS5 title runs, that its updates install, or that online and system services behave normally. Evaluate the game, its edition, its required update, and the payload separately from the firmware exploit.

Why updating can help one goal and hurt another

Updating a console changes the tradeoff between game requirements and modification support. A newer firmware may be needed for a title or update, while the same update can move the console outside a documented exploit or payload range.

Tom’s Hardware reported on September 30, 2026, that some game updates could require firmware newer than Relapse-Exploit’s stated ceiling. This is a report about some updates, not all games. Verify the exact title, edition, update version, and required system software before deciding.

Your priority Safer decision process Main risk
Keep a documented homebrew setup Record the current firmware, identify the exact exploit and payload branch, and avoid an update until you have checked what that update changes. A later firmware may no longer be covered by the documentation you rely on.
Play a newly updated game Check the game’s required system software and whether the update is optional, then compare that requirement with your exploit and payload support. Remaining on an older version can prevent that update from installing.
Use official PS4 backward compatibility Keep the console on a normal supported system and consult Sony’s compatibility information for the title. Some games still have errors or missing functions despite broad compatibility.
Use PS4 FPKG support on PS5 Confirm that the console is within the ps5-hen documentation’s through-4.51 ceiling and account for its package and rest-mode limitations. Moving to a newer firmware can remove that documented path.

There is no universally correct update choice. Decide which capability matters more, document the current state, and check the exact software requirement before changing firmware.

A practical comparison workflow

  1. Write down the console and firmware. Use the PS5 Console Information path or the PS4 System Information path above. Include the complete version string.
  2. Classify the goal. Choose one primary objective: ordinary PS4 backward compatibility, PS4 homebrew, PS5 homebrew, PS4 FPKG support on PS5, or a particular game and update.
  3. Identify the layer you need. An exploit-only claim is insufficient if your goal requires a HEN, package support, rest mode, or external storage.
  4. Read the project documentation for the exact version. For PS4, compare the firmware with the GoldHEN list. For PS5, determine whether you are evaluating the Relapse-Exploit range or the separate ps5-hen branch.
  5. Check limitations before installing anything. Look specifically for rest-mode behavior, package-count crashes, storage restrictions, and whether the feature is experimental or limited to a particular release.
  6. Check the game separately. For an official PS4 title, use Sony’s compatibility information. For a jailbreak-dependent package, verify that the payload and firmware support that package format and title.
  7. Check update requirements. A game update may require newer system software. Do not assume that a title’s base version and its latest update have the same requirement.
  8. Recheck after every system change. Confirm the firmware again after an update, repair, or other maintenance before loading a payload that expects a particular version.

Common failure modes and what they tell you

The exploit is listed, but the HEN does not load

This usually indicates a layer mismatch: the exploit range was mistaken for complete payload support, or the payload was not built for the exact firmware. Recheck the project, release, and full version number. Do not infer that a failed payload proves the console is unsupported forever.

A homebrew application launches, but a feature fails

Features such as rest mode, external-drive access, and package installation are not guaranteed by the word homebrew. Compare the application’s requirements with the HEN’s documented features. On PS5, the documented absence of rest-mode support in ps5-hen is an explicit limitation, not a configuration option to assume away.

Several PS4 packages cause a crash

Multiple-FPKG crashes are recorded in the ps5-hen documentation. Test the setup against that limitation rather than treating a crash with several packages as evidence that every individual package is incompatible.

A game update refuses to install

Check the update’s required firmware and compare it with the console’s current version and the exploit’s stated ceiling. The September 30, 2026 report about some updates exceeding Relapse-Exploit’s ceiling shows why the title and update must be checked individually.

An external drive works for one purpose but not another

External storage support is role-specific. GoldHEN’s external HDD feature and Sony’s guidance about accessing PS4 games and data on compatible USB storage do not establish that one drive can serve every PS4 and PS5 storage function. Verify the required format, port, and console role for the task.

PS4 versus PS5: the decision in one table

Question PS4 answer PS5 answer
Which documented firmware list is clearest? GoldHEN lists 5.05, 6.71/6.72, 9.00, 9.60, 10.00/10.01, and 11.00. Support is split: Relapse-Exploit lists 7.00–13.60, while ps5-hen documents homebrew and PS4 FPKG support through 4.51.
Does a listed firmware guarantee a working payload? No. Match the release and payload to the exact version. No. An exploit range does not guarantee identical HEN, homebrew, package, or game behavior.
Is rest mode documented? GoldHEN lists rest-mode support. ps5-hen documents no rest-mode support; do not transfer the PS4 feature claim to PS5.
Is external storage mentioned? GoldHEN lists external HDD support. Sony describes compatible USB storage for PS4 games and data; this is separate from unofficial payload support.
Can it play PS4 games? Use the game’s normal PS4 compatibility and the console’s supported software path. Officially, Sony says the overwhelming majority of 4,000+ PS4 games are playable; jailbreak-dependent PS4 FPKG support is documented through 4.51 by ps5-hen.

Bottom line for choosing whether to update

If homebrew is the priority, preserve and document a firmware that the relevant project explicitly supports, and verify the payload’s features and limitations before changing anything. If a specific game or update is the priority, check its required system software first; accepting the update may mean giving up a documented exploit or payload path.

For ordinary PS4 games, a jailbreak is unnecessary: Sony’s official compatibility statement covers more than 4,000 titles, although a minority can have errors or reduced functionality. For modified-console features, use the narrower project documentation. PS4 GoldHEN has the longest, clearest list in the material here; PS5 support is more fragmented, with Relapse-Exploit’s broad exploit range and ps5-hen’s older, lower-firmware homebrew and PS4 FPKG branch answering different questions.

Firmware, payload stability, and game-update requirements change frequently. Treat the version number and the documentation date as part of the compatibility result, not as permanent properties of the console.
