If a PS5 is stuck in Safe Mode after a failed jailbreak attempt, use the console’s built-in recovery path rather than another payload or modified firmware. Start with Restart PS5, video-output changes, Repair Console Storage, cache clearing, database rebuilding, and an official system update. A reset or USB reinstallation is substantially more destructive and should come only after you have backed up what you can.

Sony’s documentation explains general Safe Mode recovery, not any particular jailbreak exploit. It does not establish that a specific payload caused a failure or provide an exploit-specific unbrick method. The steps below therefore focus on supported PS5 recovery and clearly mark where user data can be lost.

Before changing anything, record the state of the console

Write down the exact message on screen, any error code, whether the console reaches the Safe Mode menu, and whether the DualSense is detected. This information determines which branch of the recovery process applies and gives PlayStation Support useful details if the console needs service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Note whether the PS5 powers off normally, remains on a blank screen, or returns to Safe Mode after every restart.
  • Photograph an error code or warning before selecting an option.
  • Check whether the controller works only wirelessly or is recognized after a USB connection.
  • Do not assume that the jailbreak attempt is the proven cause. Sony’s published guidance does not identify exploit-specific causes.

Stop if the console is unusually hot, smells of burning, or repeatedly loses power. Disconnect it and seek hardware service instead of continuing software recovery.

How to enter PS5 Safe Mode correctly

Safe Mode is the official recovery environment. The controller must be connected by USB; Bluetooth pairing alone is not enough.

  1. Turn the PS5 completely off. If it is running, hold the power button for about three seconds and wait for the shutdown.
  2. With the console off, press and hold the power button again. Keep holding after the first beep.
  3. Release the button after the second beep, which occurs about seven seconds after the first.
  4. Connect the DualSense to the PS5 with a USB data cable.
  5. Press the PS button. The Safe Mode menu should appear.

If the menu appears, leave the console connected to power and work from the least-destructive option first. If it does not appear, follow the cable and power checks in the later troubleshooting section.

What each Safe Mode option changes

The menu options do not have the same risk. Use the following comparison before selecting one.

Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) Deletes user data Removes and reinstalls PS5 system software Yes No

The first five choices are the normal starting points for a startup, storage, display, performance, or stale-content problem. A reset or reinstall is a last-resort operation, not a routine way to test whether a payload worked.

Work through the non-destructive recovery choices

1. Restart PS5

Select Restart PS5 when the console has reached Safe Mode after a one-time crash or interrupted boot. It exits the recovery menu and attempts a normal startup. If it immediately returns to Safe Mode, do not keep repeating the restart; move to storage and cache repair.

2. Change Video Output

Use Change Video Output when the PS5 may be running but the television shows a blank or incompatible signal. Try Change Resolution. If the display still fails, return to Safe Mode and try Change HDCP Mode. These settings affect the video handshake, not games, saves, or installed software.

3. Repair Console Storage

Select Repair Console Storage for startup or storage symptoms. Sony explicitly says, “This option does not erase data.” Let the process finish without disconnecting power. It is intended to correct storage conditions that prevent a normal boot; it is not a method for repairing a modified system image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Clear System Software Cache

Choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, then Clear System Software Cache, when system features behave incorrectly or performance drops after a failed boot. Cache clearing removes temporary system information while leaving installed games and personal content in place.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

5. Rebuild Database

From Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, select Rebuild Database. The PS5 scans the internal drive and creates a new content database. Sony gives a stale game icon as an example of the type of indexing problem this addresses. The scan can take time on a heavily populated drive; do not turn the console off while it runs.

6. Restore Default Settings only when settings are the problem

Restore Default Settings returns configuration choices to their defaults while retaining games, applications, captures, and saved data. It is useful when display, network, or other preferences are preventing startup, but you will need to configure those preferences again. It does not reinstall system software.

If the PS5 keeps returning to Safe Mode

A repeated Safe Mode loop needs a complete power cycle before you try more menu options. Follow Sony’s sequence exactly:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Hold the power button until the PS5 beeps and turns off.
  2. Remove the power cable from the console.
  3. Leave it disconnected for 20 minutes.
  4. Reconnect the cable and power on.
  5. If it still starts in Safe Mode, open Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, choose Clear System Software Cache, and select OK.

This 20-minute disconnect is different from briefly pulling the plug during a running session. Do not interrupt a storage repair, cache clear, database rebuild, update, or reinstall by removing power; an interruption can create another startup failure.

If Safe Mode will not appear

When the second beep never produces a menu, Sony identifies the USB, HDMI, or power cable as possible causes. Test one replacement at a time so you know which change helped.

  1. Try another USB data cable between the DualSense and the PS5. A charge-only cable may power the controller without carrying the required data connection.
  2. Try another HDMI cable and, if possible, another HDMI input or display.
  3. Try another compatible power cable if the existing cable is loose or damaged.
  4. After each cable change, power the console fully off and attempt Safe Mode again using the two-beep procedure.
  5. If the screen remains blank, remove power for 20 minutes, reconnect it, and retry.

If Safe Mode still cannot be displayed after those checks, use the PlayStation Repairs path rather than repeatedly forcing shutdowns. A repair assessment is appropriate when the console cannot reach the supported recovery environment at all.

Update the system before considering a reinstall

Safe Mode includes Update System Software. You can use a direct download when the console can reach the network, or a USB update when it has been offline for a long time or a previous update failed. Select the official update route shown by the console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not substitute a random payload, modified firmware image, or third-party file for the official update. Sony’s documented procedures cover the signed system software supplied through its update process; they do not validate exploit files or promise that an unofficial image will recover a jailbreak-related failure.

Back up what you can before destructive actions

Before choosing either reset option, copy important saved data and captures to supported USB or cloud storage while the console still permits access. Confirm that the backup completed and that the destination has enough free space. If the PS5 cannot boot normally, you may not have another opportunity to make a copy.

Reset PS5 deletes user data and returns the console to an initial setup state. Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) goes further: it deletes user data and removes the PS5 system software so it can be installed again. Neither operation is reversible through Safe Mode, so use them only after the non-destructive choices and an official update have failed.

How to reinstall PS5 system software from USB

Use the reinstall procedure only as the last troubleshooting step. You need a computer, a USB drive that can be formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, and the official reinstallation file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. On a PC or Mac, format the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT. Formatting removes files already on that drive.
  2. At the top level of the drive, create a folder named PS5.
  3. Inside PS5, create a folder named UPDATE.
  4. Download the official PS5 reinstallation file and save it in PS5/UPDATE.
  5. Rename the file exactly to PS5UPDATE.PUP. Use uppercase letters and do not leave an additional extension such as .PUP.PUP.
  6. Safely eject the drive from the computer and connect it to the PS5.
  7. Start Safe Mode by holding the power button and releasing it after the second beep.
  8. Select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) and follow the on-screen prompts.

If the PS5 says it cannot find the update file, check all three details: the drive format, the uppercase folder names, and the exact filename and location. The expected path is PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP; placing the file in the drive’s root or changing a letter in the name prevents detection.

Sony states that reinstalling the console’s system software deletes all data on the console. Treat the USB drive as an installation medium, not as a way to preserve games or saves.

Common USB and controller pitfalls

A Safe Mode failure is often a connection problem rather than a software diagnosis. Keep the DualSense connected directly to the PS5, not through a hub or adapter, and use a cable that carries data as well as power. If the PS button does nothing, test another known-good USB data cable before concluding that the console is bricked. For a reinstall, the USB storage device itself must be readable as FAT32 or exFAT; a drive full of unrelated files can still be formatted, but formatting erases those files.

Folder capitalization and placement matter. The two folders must be at the drive’s top level, with UPDATE inside PS5. The file belongs inside UPDATE, not beside the folders. Computer settings that hide extensions can produce PS5UPDATE.PUP.PUP, which the console will not recognize. Check the complete name before ejecting the drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What a reinstall can and cannot tell you about a jailbreak failure

A successful official reinstall establishes that the PS5 can accept Sony’s supported system software again. It does not prove why the earlier boot failed, whether a particular exploit was responsible, or whether an unofficial payload is compatible with a given firmware version. Sony’s general recovery documentation contains no jailbreak success rates, brick rates, firmware-vulnerability tables, or guaranteed exploit recovery method.

Avoid stacking uncertain fixes. Do not write additional files to the system partition, downgrade firmware with an unverified package, or repeatedly interrupt installation while looking for a different result. Those actions fall outside the documented recovery path and can remove the remaining option of a supported repair.

Use this decision path when you are unsure

  • Safe Mode appears and the screen is usable: try Restart PS5, then Change Video Output if the issue is display-related, followed by Repair Console Storage, Clear System Software Cache, and Rebuild Database.
  • The console loops into Safe Mode: perform the 20-minute power disconnect, then use Clear System Software Cache if the loop continues.
  • The console is offline or an update failed: use Update System Software through Safe Mode, choosing the direct or official USB method.
  • You need to keep data: stop before either reset option and back up to USB or cloud storage if access is available.
  • Nothing reaches Safe Mode: test USB, HDMI, and power cables, repeat the 20-minute power cycle, and then contact PlayStation Repairs.
  • Only reinstall remains: verify the FAT32/exFAT drive, folder names, filename, and backup status before selecting Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).

How to decide whether to keep troubleshooting

Use the symptom, not the jailbreak label, to choose the next step. A blank television image with signs that the console is running points toward Change Resolution or Change HDCP Mode. A startup error or storage warning points toward Repair Console Storage. A menu that is slow, inconsistent, or showing outdated game entries is a better match for cache clearing or Rebuild Database. A loop that survives those options calls for the complete 20-minute power disconnect and then Sony’s cache-clearing instruction.

Do not select Reset PS5 merely because it is visible or because an online post calls it a “quick fix.” Resetting removes user data even when the underlying problem is only a video handshake or stale index. Reinstalling is more consequential still because the system software is removed before it is installed again. The option is appropriate only after backups, non-destructive choices, and the official update path have been exhausted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a simple log as you work: cable tested, menu option selected, result, and any new code. If you eventually contact PlayStation Repairs, that record prevents repeating the same power cycles and makes clear whether the console can reach Safe Mode, detect a controller, or read an update drive.

What a successful recovery looks like

After a non-destructive repair, allow the PS5 to complete its first normal startup before launching games or attempting any modification. Check that the home screen loads, the controller reconnects, and your installed content and saves are present. After Restore Default Settings, expect to re-enter configuration details because settings have been returned to their defaults.

After an update or reinstall, follow every on-screen setup instruction and do not remove power while installation is in progress. A USB reinstall is not a data-restoration process: it supplies system software, while your games, captures, and saves must come from a backup or be downloaded again as applicable. If the console still cannot complete the supported process, stop experimenting and use the official repair channel.

The safest recovery is the one that solves the observed symptom while changing the least. Keep the official Safe Mode menu as your baseline, document each result, and escalate to PlayStation Repairs when the supported environment itself is unavailable or the console still fails after the documented reinstall.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I recover a PS5 stuck in Safe Mode without deleting games and saves?

Usually, start with Restart PS5, Change Video Output, Repair Console Storage, Clear System Software Cache, Rebuild Database, or Restore Default Settings. Sony documents Repair Console Storage as non-erasing, and Restore Default Settings retains games, applications, captures, and saved data. Do not choose Reset PS5 or Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) unless you have backed up what you can.

How long should I unplug the PS5 for a Safe Mode loop?

Shut the console down, remove its power cable, and leave it disconnected for 20 minutes. Reconnect it and try again. If it still enters Safe Mode, select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Clear System Software Cache.

Why does my DualSense work wirelessly but not in Safe Mode?

Safe Mode requires a wired USB connection. Use a USB data cable, not a charge-only lead, connect directly to the console, and press the PS button. If it is not detected, test another USB cable.

What is the difference between Reset PS5 and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software)?

Both delete user data. Reset PS5 resets the console, while Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) also removes the PS5 system software and installs it again from the official file. The reinstall option requires a correctly prepared FAT32 or exFAT USB drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should the USB reinstall file be called?

The exact filename is PS5UPDATE.PUP, in the path PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP. Folder names and the filename should use uppercase letters. Check that your computer did not append a second extension such as .PUP.PUP.

What if the PS5 never shows the Safe Mode menu?

Try another USB data cable, HDMI cable, and compatible power cable, testing Safe Mode after each change. If the screen remains blank, disconnect power for 20 minutes and retry. Persistent failure should go to PlayStation Repairs.

Does reinstalling official software explain what caused a jailbreak failure?

No. A successful official reinstall only shows that the console accepted Sony’s supported software again. Sony’s general Safe Mode pages do not establish exploit-specific causation, compatibility, success rates, or an unofficial unbrick method.

Should I try another payload before using Safe Mode?

No. Stay with the official recovery sequence. Another payload or modified firmware can add uncertainty and is not covered by Sony’s documented update and reinstall procedures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Enter Safe Mode with the two-beep procedure, connect the DualSense by USB, and proceed from least destructive to most destructive: restart, video output, storage repair, cache/database tools, and official update. Power-cycle for 20 minutes if the console loops. Back up before any reset, and use the exact FAT32/exFAT USB reinstall structure only as a last resort. If Safe Mode itself remains unavailable, contact PlayStation Repairs.
