Choose a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD if you want added space from which PS5 games can launch. Choose a USB extended-storage drive if you mainly want to archive PS5 installations, free the console’s built-in space, or play PS4 games directly from the drive. A PS5 game stored on USB cannot launch there; you must copy it back to the console’s internal storage or an installed M.2 SSD first.
Sony treats these as different storage roles rather than interchangeable products. The right choice depends on whether your priority is a playable expanded library or inexpensive, removable storage for games you are willing to move before playing.
At a glance: which drive fits your use?
| Question | Compatible M.2 NVMe SSD | USB extended-storage drive |
|---|---|---|
| Can PS5 games launch directly from it? | Yes, when the SSD is compatible and installed correctly. | No. Copy each PS5 game back to console or M.2 storage before launching. |
| Can PS4 games launch directly from it? | Yes. | Yes, from USB extended storage. |
| Best role | An expanded library that remains ready to play. | An archive for PS5 games, or direct storage for PS4 games. |
| Connection and installation | Installed inside the console’s M.2 bay; interface, physical size and heat-dissipation rules apply. | External USB connection; Sony specifies SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later and a 250 GB to 8 TB capacity range. |
| Main inconvenience | You must verify model-specific compatibility and physically install the module. | Every archived PS5 game requires a copy-back operation before play. |
| Can it replace save-data backup? | No. Installed game files and saved data are separate categories. | No. USB game storage is not a universal save backup. |
Sony’s storage overview and its PS5 expandable-storage information describe this split: M.2 storage is for running games, while USB storage is useful for keeping games available without occupying the console’s internal capacity.

What an added M.2 SSD does
An M.2 SSD is an internal expansion module installed in the PS5’s dedicated M.2 slot. Once a compatible drive is installed and formatted, the console can download, copy and launch PS5 and PS4 games from it. Media applications can also be stored there, according to Sony’s M.2 installation support page.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That playability is the decisive advantage. A game installed on the M.2 drive behaves as part of your active library: you do not need to move it to the original console storage simply because it is a PS5 title. The M.2 drive therefore increases the amount of space that can hold games ready to launch.
What “internal” does and does not mean
The comparison is between the PS5’s built-in storage and an added M.2 module. Installing an M.2 drive does not replace the console’s original SSD; it adds another supported location. You can choose the destination for new installations and move existing game data between supported storage locations through the console’s storage controls.
Compatibility is stricter than the label “NVMe”
Do not assume that every M.2 NVMe product fits. Sony’s requirements include a PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe interface and Key M configuration, plus limits for capacity, physical dimensions and heat dissipation. The consulted CFI-71XX safety guide lists 250 GB to 8 TB capacities and sizes 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110, but that guide is model-specific. Check the latest Sony documentation for your exact PS5 revision before buying; a heatsink or other heat-dissipation mechanism must also remain within Sony’s dimensional limits. The official guide is available as a CFI-71XX safety PDF.

What a USB extended-storage drive does
A compatible external USB hard drive or SSD can hold PS5 and PS4 game installations outside the console’s built-in storage. Its limits are important: Sony specifies SuperSpeed USB rated at 5 Gbps or later, a minimum capacity of 250 GB and a maximum of 8 TB. Sony also warns that not every device is guaranteed to work.
USB storage has two different behaviors depending on the game generation:
Rank #2
- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- PS4 games: They can be played directly from USB extended storage.
- PS5 games: They can be stored there, but they cannot launch directly from USB. Copy the game back to console storage or an installed M.2 SSD first.
Sony states this limitation explicitly on its USB extended-storage support page: “PlayStation®5 games can’t be played directly from USB extended storage, so make sure to copy PS5® game data back to your console storage when you want to play the game again.”
Why a USB archive can still be useful
Modern PS5 installations can consume substantial space, while games you have finished may sit untouched for months. Moving those installations to USB frees internal capacity without requiring a redownload. When you decide to return to one, copy it back instead of downloading the full game again. Sony’s product information summarizes the workflow: when ready to play a PS5 game on an external drive, use the Options menu in the Library to transfer it back to the internal SSD.
USB operating restrictions
Connect the drive directly to a compatible PS5 USB port; Sony says not to use a USB hub for the extended-storage drive. Only one USB extended-storage drive can be in use at a time. Capacity must stay within the 250 GB minimum and 8 TB maximum, and the drive must meet the SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps-or-faster requirement.
Never unplug the drive while it is being read or written. Sony warns that improper disconnection can cause data loss, corruption or damage to the console or drive. Use the PS5’s safe-removal command before disconnecting, and wait until the console confirms that removal is safe.
How to add and use an M.2 SSD
The exact cover-removal and mounting details vary by console revision, so follow the current Sony guide for your model. The broad process is:
Rank #3
- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Identify the model. Check the console’s model number and open the corresponding Sony support instructions. Do not apply the CFI-71XX dimensions to another revision without verification.
- Check the SSD specification. Confirm PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe, Key M, supported capacity, physical size and a compatible heat-dissipation solution. Include the heatsink’s dimensions when comparing the product with Sony’s limits.
- Shut down completely. Turn off the PS5 rather than leaving it in Rest Mode, disconnect the power and allow the console to cool before opening the expansion bay.
- Install the module. Remove the cover specified by Sony, open the M.2 bay, insert the SSD at the proper angle and secure it with the supplied mounting hardware. Keep the heat-dissipation assembly attached and within the allowed envelope.
- Reassemble and start the console. Replace the bay cover and outer panel before reconnecting power. On first startup, the PS5 should offer to format a newly detected M.2 drive; formatting erases that drive, so confirm it contains no needed files.
- Choose storage destinations. In the PS5 storage settings, review console and M.2 capacity and set the preferred installation location for supported game data. Existing games can be moved between the listed game-storage locations.
If the drive is not detected, power down and recheck seating, the mounting screw and the heatsink’s fit. Then verify the interface and capacity against Sony’s current model-specific requirements. A drive that is electrically NVMe but outside Sony’s supported interface, size or thermal limits is not a compatible PS5 expansion.

- Select a suitable drive. It must be SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or faster and between 250 GB and 8 TB. Because Sony does not guarantee every device, retain the receipt and check the drive maker’s PS5 compatibility information.
- Connect it directly. Plug the drive into a PS5 USB port without a hub. If the console asks to format it as USB extended storage, understand that formatting deletes existing contents.
- Move installations. Use the PS5 storage-management controls to select installed PS5 or PS4 game data and move it to USB. PS5 titles can remain there as an archive; PS4 titles can remain there and launch from that location.
- Restore a PS5 game when needed. Open the game in your Library, open the Options menu and choose the transfer or copy command to move it from USB back to console storage or the M.2 SSD. Launch it after the copy completes.
- Remove safely. Use the console’s stop or safely-remove control before unplugging. Disconnecting during activity risks corruption or data loss.
Copying is normally preferable to deleting and redownloading when your internet connection, data allowance or available download time is limited. It does not eliminate the waiting period entirely: a PS5 game must complete the copy-back step before it can run.
M.2 versus USB: the trade-offs that matter
Playability versus archival capacity
M.2 storage is the better fit when you rotate through many PS5 games and want them all visible and launchable without moving data. USB is the better fit when you keep a smaller active set and archive the rest. For a library containing mostly PS4 titles, USB can also serve as the direct play location.
Installation effort
USB storage is external and removable, so setup generally involves connecting, formatting and moving data. M.2 storage requires opening the console and installing a module, followed by a compatibility check that includes thermal hardware. The internal option demands more preparation but removes the recurring copy-back step for PS5 games.
Reliability and handling
An M.2 drive remains inside the console, avoiding cable movement and accidental unplugging during play. A USB drive can be carried between compatible consoles, but its cable and enclosure need protection, and safe removal is mandatory. Neither device should be treated as the sole copy of irreplaceable personal data.

Performance claims require caution
Sony’s guidance establishes compatibility and playability rules, not a universal real-world speed ranking between internal M.2 products, USB SSDs and USB hard drives. Do not buy on an unsupported promise that one category is always faster. Compare the published interface and performance class of the specific product, then prioritize whether it meets the PS5’s compatibility requirements and your workflow.
Choosing by scenario
| Your situation | Better starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You want several PS5 games permanently ready to launch. | Compatible M.2 SSD | PS5 games can launch from installed M.2 storage. |
| You finish games and may not play them again soon. | USB extended storage | Archive the installations and copy them back when needed. |
| Your library is mostly PS4 games. | USB extended storage or M.2 | PS4 games can launch directly from either supported location; USB may be simpler if you want removable storage. |
| You have slow or capped internet. | M.2 for active games, USB for the archive | Keep more installations locally and avoid repeated downloads; remember that archived PS5 titles still require copying back. |
| You do not want to open the console. | USB extended storage | It provides extra game capacity without an internal installation, subject to USB limits. |
| You need a portable library between consoles. | USB extended storage | The external form factor is easier to move, but each console must support the drive and it must be safely ejected. |
Buying checklist
If you are buying an M.2 SSD
- Confirm your exact PS5 model and use Sony’s current requirements for that revision.
- Verify PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe and Key M.
- Check capacity against the supported range; the consulted CFI-71XX guide lists 250 GB to 8 TB.
- Measure the complete assembly, including the heatsink, not just the bare module.
- Confirm the drive’s published performance class, warranty and current price from the seller; no universal price or independent benchmark establishes one model as best.
If you are buying a USB drive
- Look for SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later.
- Stay between 250 GB and 8 TB.
- Plan a direct connection, not a USB hub.
- Decide whether the drive will be an archive for PS5 games, a direct library for PS4 games, or both.
- Choose an enclosure and cable that can remain connected without being bumped, and keep a safe-removal routine.
Neither category should be selected solely by advertised capacity. A nominal capacity does not equal free space after formatting and installed system data, and compatibility determines whether that capacity is usable on your console.
Game installations are not saved-data backups
Moving a game installation does not move every form of progress or personal content. Sony’s storage-management guidance separates PS5 and PS4 game data from saved data and capture files. Game installations can occupy console, M.2 or USB locations according to the rules above, while save-data handling follows separate rules.
Use Sony’s storage-management guidance for the current locations and transfer options for your console. The cited table lists cloud storage for saved data, with PlayStation Plus required for that cloud feature, and USB storage for PS4 saved data and capture files under its stated conditions. Treat a game-storage drive as a way to preserve the installation, not as a complete backup of saves, screenshots or video clips.
Common mistakes and fixes
“My PS5 game appears on USB, but it will not start.”
This is expected behavior, not necessarily a failed drive. PS5 games cannot launch directly from USB extended storage. Select the game’s Options menu in the Library and transfer it to console storage or the M.2 SSD, then launch it after copying finishes.

“The console does not recognize my M.2 drive.”
Turn the console off and verify that the module is fully seated and secured. Check the PCIe generation, Key M configuration, capacity, supported physical length and complete heatsink dimensions against the guide for your PS5 model. Do not assume that an M.2 label alone proves compatibility.
“The USB drive disconnects or reports errors.”
Stop using it while data is moving, reconnect it directly rather than through a hub, and check that it meets the 5 Gbps-or-faster and 250 GB-to-8 TB requirements. Always use safe removal. Repeated errors can indicate a cable, enclosure or drive problem; copy any recoverable games elsewhere before further testing.
“I ran out of room even after buying a large drive.”
Check which storage location new games use and how much free space remains after formatting. Remember that archived PS5 games on USB still need temporary room on console or M.2 storage during the copy-back process. Remove completed installations or move them to the archive rather than treating nominal capacity as immediately available play space.
Bottom-line decision
For storing PS5 games that you want to play without an extra transfer, install a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD. For keeping finished PS5 games available without redownloading, or for playing PS4 games directly from an external device, use USB extended storage. Many households benefit from both: M.2 for the active PS5 library and USB for the archive, provided each drive meets Sony’s requirements and PS5 titles are copied back before play.
