Choose PS5 if you want a consistent, plug-and-play horror setup and value console-specific features such as DualSense haptics, adaptive triggers, Tempest 3D AudioTech and predictable performance. Choose PC if you already own hardware that meets the games you want to play and care more about adjustable graphics, ultrawide displays, unlocked frame rates or flexible input devices.
There is no universal winner. The practical choice depends on your existing equipment, the specific horror games on your shortlist, their regional availability and whether their PC and console versions expose the features you care about. Until Dawn is a useful example because Sony lists it on both PS5 and PC while documenting meaningful differences between the versions.
PS5 vs. PC for horror games at a glance
| Decision factor | PS5 | PC |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | A standardized console experience with minimal setup and supported console features. | Players with compatible hardware who want settings control, high-refresh or ultrawide displays and input flexibility. |
| Performance target | Defined by the game’s console implementation and display modes. | Depends on your CPU, GPU, memory, storage, drivers and chosen settings. |
| Graphics options | Usually fewer user-adjustable options; game-specific visual modes apply. | Game-specific options can include resolution scaling, ray tracing, upscaling and frame-rate controls. |
| Controls | DualSense is the standard controller. | Mouse and keyboard, DualShock 4, DualSense and other controllers may be available; feature support varies by title. |
| Display flexibility | Designed around supported television and monitor output modes. | Can support ultrawide aspect ratios and a wider range of resolutions when the game provides those options. |
| Library comparison | The PlayStation Store has a live PS5 horror category with changing listings. | PC storefronts offer many horror games, while Sony’s PC page highlights selected PlayStation titles rather than a complete genre catalog. |
| Ownership cost | Depends on the console model, region, current offers and games you buy. | Depends on whether you already own a suitable PC or must add hardware, plus the games and accessories you need. |
The available evidence does not establish a dependable, platform-wide horror-library count or a universal total-cost winner. Treat store pages and prices as live information that can change, not as permanent statistics.

You want a known configuration instead of troubleshooting
A PS5 gives you one defined hardware target. You install the console edition, connect a compatible display and use the game’s supported modes rather than balancing graphics settings against a particular PC’s processor, graphics card, memory and drivers. That consistency is valuable when you want to start a game quickly or share a living-room setup with other players.

It does not mean every game behaves identically on PS5. Resolution, frame-rate modes, HDR behavior and other options remain game-specific. The advantage is that you are choosing among the developer’s console modes instead of creating a configuration from dozens of PC settings.
You care about DualSense effects and console audio features
For Until Dawn, Sony describes DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers on PS5, along with Tempest 3D AudioTech. The same page describes ray-traced lighting and shadows and SSD-enabled scene transitions. These are implementation details for that game, not a promise that every horror title uses every feature.
Haptics can make a pull, impact or environmental vibration feel different from a conventional rumble motor. Adaptive triggers can add resistance to a compatible action. Tempest 3D AudioTech is intended to place sounds around the player when the game and audio setup support it. If those effects are part of why you play horror games, PS5 is the straightforward route for the documented console implementation.
You prefer a television-first experience
PS5 fits a television or standard monitor without requiring you to select a GPU profile or tune an ultrawide layout. The console’s shared platform target also makes it easier to use the same setup for different players. Check the individual game’s display modes and your television’s capabilities before buying; the console does not guarantee a particular resolution or frame rate for every release.
You want the PlayStation version of a specific game
Check the game’s current regional store listing before choosing the platform. Sony’s US PlayStation Store horror category is a live sample of PS5 horror listings, not a permanent or comprehensive genre ranking. A title may have a PS5 edition, a PC edition, both, or availability that differs by country.
When PC is the better horror platform
You already own hardware that meets the game’s requirements
PC is most compelling when the machine you have can run the games you actually want. Sony’s published Until Dawn requirements show why a blanket “good gaming PC” label is insufficient: the minimum and recommended tiers target different resolutions, frame rates and settings. Other horror games can require substantially different hardware.
Before buying, identify your graphics card model, processor, installed memory, available SSD space and operating-system support. Compare those details with the game’s current store listing. A PC that runs one horror title well may still need upgrades or lower settings for another.

You want adjustable graphics and display choices
The PC version of Until Dawn documents unlocked frame rates, ultrawide aspect-ratio support, ray tracing on supported hardware, DLSS and FSR options, and input remapping. Those controls let you prioritize image quality, latency, frame rate or a particular monitor shape. The trade-off is that you must select settings that your hardware can sustain.
Unlocked frame rates do not guarantee a high frame rate. Your practical result depends on the GPU, CPU, resolution, effects, upscaling mode, drivers and display refresh rate. Ray tracing can increase visual complexity and hardware load, while DLSS or FSR can trade some image characteristics for performance when supported by the game and GPU.
You use a nonstandard monitor or input setup
PC is the natural fit for ultrawide monitors, high-refresh displays, mouse-and-keyboard play and remapped controls when the game exposes those options. Sony states that PlayStation Studios PC games support many input options, including mouse and keyboard, DualShock 4, DualSense and other game controllers, but also warns that specific features vary by title. Read the game’s own feature list rather than assuming every controller effect works everywhere.
You accept configuration as part of the experience
PC flexibility comes with decisions: selecting a resolution, choosing an upscaler, enabling or disabling ray tracing, setting a frame-rate cap, mapping controls and keeping drivers current. Those choices can be worthwhile if you enjoy tuning a game or need accessibility adjustments, but they add setup steps that a console player may not want.

Until Dawn PC requirements: what the numbers mean
Sony published the following specifications in 2024. They apply to Until Dawn, not to horror games generally.
| Target | Expected result | Graphics hardware | Memory and storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Average 720p at 30 fps on Low settings. | NVIDIA GTX 1660 or AMD RX 470 class GPU; at least 6 GB VRAM. | 8 GB RAM and 70 GB SSD storage. |
| Recommended | Average 1080p at 60 fps on Medium settings. | NVIDIA RTX 2060 or AMD RX 6600 XT class GPU. | 16 GB RAM and 70 GB SSD storage. |
“Average” is important: these targets are not a guarantee of a fixed frame rate in every scene. A system close to the minimum may need to reduce other options, while a system above the recommended tier may still be limited by its processor, background applications, thermals or display resolution. Confirm the current listing before installation because requirements can be updated.

PlayStation’s PC games information says PlayStation Studios PC games support many input options, including mouse and keyboard, DualShock 4, DualSense and other controllers. It also states that DualSense-specific features and wireless support vary by title.
For a PC purchase, separate three questions:
- Can the controller connect? The game or operating system may recognize it through USB, Bluetooth or another supported method.
- Does the game read the inputs? A recognized controller can still expose different button prompts or remapping behavior.
- Do haptics and adaptive triggers work? These effects are title-specific and may require a particular connection method. The Until Dawn PC materials specifically describe haptics and adaptive triggers, but that should not be generalized to every PC horror game.
If controller immersion is your deciding factor, read the exact PC feature list and connection notes before purchasing. If you simply need a controller that works, PC generally gives you more input choices, but the experience may not match the PS5 version.
Library and availability: compare your shortlist, not slogans
Neither platform can be declared the universal home of horror from the available store samples. The PlayStation Store page is a changing US category, and Sony’s PC catalog highlights selected PlayStation games. Neither is a complete, stable count of every horror game available on either platform.
- Write down the five to ten horror games you are most likely to play.
- Check each game’s current PS5 and PC listing in your region.
- Record whether the listing is a native PS5 edition, a PC edition or a different product.
- Check required accounts, launchers, online modes and supported input features.
- Only then compare which platform leaves fewer games off your list.
This method avoids assuming that a game shown in a platform’s promotional catalog is available in every country or that a console purchase automatically includes the PC edition.
Purchases, accounts and save data
PlayStation states that PC and console entitlements for PlayStation Studios games are separate. Buying a game on PS5 does not grant the PC version, and buying the PC version does not grant the PS5 version. Saves also cannot currently be transferred between the two versions according to Sony’s PC FAQ.
Some PC titles require a PlayStation account for particular modes or features. The requirement is game-specific, so inspect the listing before purchase and create or link an account only when you are comfortable with that arrangement. A storefront account, a PlayStation account and an optional publisher account may be separate credentials.
For PC purchases, also check the storefront’s current refund terms. Steam publishes its rules in its Common Refund Questions; read the live policy rather than relying on an old summary.
Cost: use your incremental cost, not a universal winner
A PS5 decision starts with the console, the edition you need and any accessories you choose. The exact amount changes with model, region, retailer offers and date. A PC decision may cost nothing beyond the game if your existing machine meets its requirements, or it may require a graphics-card, memory, storage or complete-system upgrade.

| Do I already own the platform? | Include the console purchase only if you do not already have a suitable PS5. | Verify the actual components in your current PC before pricing an upgrade. |
| Will storage be sufficient? | Check the game’s install size and available console space. | For Until Dawn, Sony lists 70 GB of SSD storage; other games differ. |
| Do I need extra input hardware? | Determine whether your existing DualSense and display setup is adequate. | Price a controller, keyboard, mouse or adapter only if your preferred game requires one. |
| Will I buy the game twice? | Assume the PS5 and PC products are separate unless the listing explicitly says otherwise. | Do not count on a console entitlement carrying over. |
A practical decision process
Step 1: Start with your hardware inventory
For PS5, note the console model, display, audio setup and available storage. For PC, record the CPU, GPU and VRAM, RAM, SSD free space, operating system and monitor resolution. Do not substitute a broad label such as “gaming PC” for these details.
Step 2: Build a game shortlist
Use current regional store pages for the exact games you intend to play. Mark each title as PS5-only, PC-only, available on both or not currently listed for your platform. This is more reliable than trying to rank entire catalogs.
Step 3: Identify your non-negotiable features
Choose the features that affect your experience: DualSense effects, a television setup, ultrawide support, unlocked frame rates, ray tracing, DLSS or FSR, mouse-and-keyboard input, accessibility remapping or a particular audio arrangement. Then verify which shortlisted games actually document those features.
Recommended Free Tools
Step 4: Check requirements and accounts
Compare your PC components with the game’s minimum and recommended specifications. On either platform, read the current listing for region, edition, online requirements and account linking. Remember that console and PC purchases are separate for PlayStation Studios games.
Step 5: Calculate only what you must add
Price the missing hardware, storage and accessories for your existing setup. If both platforms require a major purchase, compare the resulting setups for the games you named rather than assigning a permanent price advantage to PS5 or PC.
Step 6: Choose the platform with fewer compromises
Pick PS5 when its standardized setup and documented console features outweigh the value of PC tuning. Pick PC when your hardware already qualifies and its display, performance and input flexibility directly improve the games on your shortlist.
Setup checklists
Before launching a horror game on PS5
- Confirm that you purchased the PS5 edition for your region.
- Install the game on the console’s available storage and check for updates.
- Enable the display and audio capabilities you actually use, such as HDR or compatible 3D audio, when the game supports them.
- Read the game’s control and accessibility menus; console hardware does not guarantee that every option is present.
- Check whether the game requires an online connection or account for a specific mode.
Before launching a horror game on PC
- Compare your GPU, VRAM, CPU, RAM and SSD space with the game’s current requirements.
- Install current graphics drivers and leave enough SSD space for the game and updates.
- Set a resolution and frame-rate target your display and hardware can sustain.
- Test ray tracing, DLSS or FSR one at a time so you can identify which setting changes performance or image quality.
- Map mouse, keyboard or controller inputs and verify whether haptics or adaptive triggers require a wired connection.
- Check launcher, storefront and PlayStation-account requirements before entering a mode that may need them.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming one game proves a platform-wide rule
Until Dawn demonstrates that PS5 and PC can expose different features, but it does not establish that every horror game has the same differences. Use its specifications as a concrete example and verify each other title independently.
Reading “unlocked frame rate” as a performance guarantee
An unlocked option removes a software cap; it does not create GPU or CPU capacity. Match the game’s target resolution and effects to your hardware, and use a frame-rate cap if you prefer steadier delivery.
Assuming controller support means feature parity
A PC game may accept a DualSense while omitting adaptive triggers, haptics or wireless support. Confirm the title-specific notes before paying for the controller experience.
Comparing a live store category with a complete catalog
Store categories change and are curated samples. Check every game on your shortlist and note the region and edition instead of using a category page as a library census.
Buying once and expecting cross-platform ownership
For PlayStation Studios games, Sony says PS5 and PC entitlements are separate and saves do not currently transfer. Decide where you will play before purchasing, especially if you care about continuing an existing save.

Bottom line
PS5 is the safer recommendation for a player who wants a consistent console setup and the documented DualSense, Tempest 3D AudioTech and console visual features of supported games. PC is the better recommendation for a player whose existing hardware meets the requirements and who values ultrawide displays, unlocked frame rates, configurable graphics or broad input options. Check your specific horror-game shortlist, current regional availability, requirements and account conditions before deciding; the evidence does not support declaring either platform the permanent winner for every horror player.
