Short answer: a standard PS5 cannot play PS2 software from a disc. The recently reported PS5SX2 homebrew project is the only option in this comparison reported to read physical PS2 discs directly, and even that claim is limited to DVD-format games on a compatible jailbroken PS5. PS2 CDs are not supported by the PS5 optical drive. For most people who want a documented emulator setup, PCSX2 on a computer is the more established route, but it requires a suitable computer and a PS2 BIOS dumped from a PS2 you own.
What the two approaches actually are
“PS5 homebrew” and “a PS2 emulator” are not interchangeable terms. One describes unofficial software running on a modified PlayStation 5; the other describes an emulator running on a computer. Your choice depends first on whether you need direct use of a physical disc, then on whether you are willing to accept unsupported firmware and setup conditions.
A stock PS5 has no PS2-disc playback feature
Sony’s official PS5 Safety Guide says: “PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and PlayStation®3 format software cannot be played from a disc.” That is the supported behavior of an ordinary retail PS5. The console’s optical drive is not presented by Sony as a PS2-compatible drive, and installing a PS2 disc in an unmodified console will not turn it into an emulator.

PS5SX2 is an unofficial PCSX2 port
PS5SX2 is a reported port of the open-source PCSX2 emulator for jailbroken PS5 systems. Project documentation describes a jailbreak-dependent setup. Current reporting says the project can read PS2 DVD games from the PS5’s internal optical drive or from an external USB optical drive. The same reporting says PS2 CD-format games are unsupported because of the PS5 drive’s media limitations.
That makes PS5SX2 a narrow, conditional exception rather than a general PS5 capability. It is new, changes quickly with firmware and project development, and has not been accompanied by a source-backed, game-by-game compatibility table in the material available for this article.
PCSX2 is the conventional computer route
PCSX2 emulates the PS2 on a Windows, Linux or other supported computer configuration. Its official requirements documentation gives hardware guidance and warns that slower systems may run some games without guaranteeing playable performance. PCSX2 also requires a PS2 BIOS. Its BIOS documentation explains how to dump that BIOS from a PS2 you own; the emulator cannot run games without one.

PCSX2 is the better documented choice for a normal emulator project, but “use your disc” still needs qualification. The available PCSX2 sources establish the BIOS and computer requirements, not universal direct-disc compatibility for every computer optical drive and every PS2 disc. You should confirm your drive, operating-system setup and chosen game workflow before assuming that inserting a disc will be sufficient.
Can PS5SX2 really play a physical PS2 disc?
According to current reporting, yes—but only under specific conditions. The reported feature is physical PS2 DVD reading on a jailbroken PS5, not broad support for every PS2 release.
The disc must be DVD format
PS2 games were released on both DVDs and CDs. The PS5SX2 reports concern DVD-format games. PS2 CD titles are excluded because the PS5 optical drive cannot read that format for this use. A game’s packaging or disc label can often identify the media type; do not rely on the game’s name alone.

If your collection includes both media types, classify each title before choosing this route. A DVD-compatible title may still fail for other reasons, while a CD title is outside the reported PS5SX2 disc capability regardless of its software compatibility.

You need a compatible jailbroken software state
PS5SX2 is not installable on a normal, up-to-date PS5 simply because you own the emulator files. The project depends on a jailbreak and on a software environment that supports the project. The cited sources do not establish that every PS5 model or every firmware version can run it.
Firmware is a particularly important constraint. Sony’s US PS5 System Software License Agreement warns that updates may prevent use of unauthorized hardware or software. An update can therefore remove the software condition that made a homebrew setup possible. Treat firmware compatibility as a prerequisite to verify before changing anything, not as a detail to solve afterward.
An external USB drive is possible, not guaranteed
Reporting mentions both the PS5’s internal drive and an external USB optical drive. That does not establish that every USB drive, adapter or disc-reading configuration will work. Exact drive compatibility was not established. If you investigate this option, regard an external drive as a possible component rather than a guaranteed plug-and-play solution.
What PCSX2 requires
PCSX2 has a clearer, computer-oriented setup path, but it still has important prerequisites.
A computer that meets the emulator’s guidance
Use PCSX2’s official requirements page to compare your processor, graphics hardware, memory and operating-system configuration with its current guidance. The requirements are guidance rather than a promise that every game will run perfectly. Slower hardware may start games while producing low frame rates, audio problems or other performance limits.

Emulation performance varies by game and by the settings you select. A computer that is adequate for one title is not automatically adequate for the whole PS2 library. The available documentation does not provide a comparative benchmark against PS5SX2, so there is no defensible percentage or frame-rate claim to use as a universal winner.
A legally obtained PS2 BIOS
PCSX2 cannot run games without a PS2 BIOS. Its official BIOS page describes dumping the BIOS from an owned PS2. Plan this step before troubleshooting games: an emulator installation without a correctly obtained BIOS is incomplete, regardless of how capable the computer is.
Keep the BIOS associated with the console from which it was dumped and follow the project’s current instructions for placing and selecting it. Do not treat downloading a random BIOS file as an equivalent shortcut; the documented method is to obtain it from hardware you own.
A defined disc or image workflow
Decide whether you will use an optical disc or a game image created from your own disc. PCSX2’s requirements and BIOS documentation do not establish that every PC optical drive can read every PS2 disc directly, nor do they promise that inserting a disc alone will produce a playable configuration.
If you intend to use original media, verify that your computer has a functioning optical drive, that the operating system exposes it to the emulator, and that the title is readable. If you use a game image, create it from a disc you own and retain the original media. The appropriate workflow can vary by operating system, drive and PCSX2 version.

Choose neither if you require an officially supported PS5 feature
If your requirement is “insert a PS2 disc into my ordinary PS5 and play it with Sony support,” neither option meets it. Sony explicitly excludes PS2 disc playback from the standard PS5 feature set. Do not buy or update a stock console expecting a hidden compatibility mode.

Under those conditions, it is the only compared path reported to read the physical PS2 DVD in the PS5 itself. That is a meaningful convenience, but it does not make the project equivalent to a supported console feature or guarantee that a particular game will boot.

- Inventory the media. Separate your PS2 collection into DVD and CD titles. PS5SX2’s reported disc feature applies only to DVD-format games.
- Identify the console state. If you have a stock PS5, assume no PS2 disc playback. If you have a jailbroken console, record its model and firmware and verify that the PS5SX2 project supports that exact state.
- Check update risk. Read Sony’s current PS5 software license information and understand that an update may disable unauthorized software or hardware. Avoid treating an automatic update as harmless to a homebrew setup.
- Check the computer alternative. Compare your computer with PCSX2’s current requirements and plan how you will dump a BIOS from an owned PS2.
- Define the media path. For either route, decide whether you need direct disc reading or will use a legally created image from your own disc. Do not assume an optical drive is compatible without testing or current documentation.
- Test one representative title. Start with a DVD game for PS5SX2 or a title appropriate to your PCSX2 workflow. A successful test of one game is not evidence that every title in your collection will work.

A PS2 game is on a DVD but still fails in PS5SX2

PCSX2 starts but will not launch a game

Use discs and BIOS data from hardware you own, and check the laws that apply where you live. The BIOS instructions published by PCSX2 describe obtaining the BIOS from an owned PS2. Ownership of a disc does not make every method of copying or downloading game data lawful in every jurisdiction, so do not assume that a convenient file source is authorized.
PS5SX2 is unofficial. Sony’s safety documentation and software license describe supported console behavior and the possibility that updates will block unauthorized software or hardware; they do not endorse PS5SX2. A jailbroken system can also affect warranty, online-service access and the ability to receive normal updates. Confirm those consequences before modifying a console used for other purposes.
Bottom line for disc owners
For an untouched PS5, the answer is definitive: it does not play PS2 software from disc. PS5SX2 is the only route discussed here that is reported to read physical PS2 discs directly, and its usefulness is limited to compatible jailbroken consoles and DVD-format games. PCSX2 is the better documented emulator choice for a computer, provided you have suitable hardware, a BIOS dumped from an owned PS2 and a disc or image workflow that your specific drive supports. Choose PS5SX2 for the narrow DVD-and-homebrew case; choose PCSX2 when documentation, flexibility and independence from PS5 firmware matter more than inserting the disc into the console itself.
