Short answer: PS5 jailbreak compatibility depends primarily on the console’s installed system software, not just its model. A community compatibility guide reports public entry routes through firmware 13.60, while no public route was reported for firmware 14.00 or newer as of October 13, 2026. The same guide says its Relapse route covers original PS5, Slim and Pro models, but no controlled testing establishes reliability for every hardware revision or homebrew payload.

How to check whether your PS5 is on a compatible firmware

Before comparing jailbreak routes, record the exact system software version installed on the console. On the PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Write down the complete version number, including the minor release. “Version 12” or “around 13” is not precise enough because community routes often stop at a particular point release.

Compatibility is a dated status. Sony can release a new system update, and community developers can change an entry route or publish a replacement. The matrix below reflects reports available on October 13, 2026; it is not an official Sony compatibility table and has not been independently validated across every console.

PS5 jailbreak compatibility by firmware and entry point

The reported routes use different entry points. A browser route, a YouTube application route and a Blu-ray route are not interchangeable, even when they ultimately rely on related kernel research.

Reported route Firmware range in the guide Entry-point requirement What the range means
Browser to UMTX 1.00–5.50 Web browser entry A reported route for older firmware; the table does not establish that every payload or homebrew application works throughout the range.
YouTube with Lapse 4.03–10.01 YouTube application entry Requires the relevant application-based entry point and matching firmware conditions.
YouTube with P2JB 9.00–12.40; reports as high as 12.70 YouTube application entry The guide lists 12.40 as its range and notes reports as high as 12.70, so 12.70 should be treated as a report rather than a firmly established ceiling.
Blu-ray with UMTX2 Up to 7.61 Disc drive and a burned Blu-ray Only relevant to consoles that can read the required physical disc. A digital-only setup cannot use this entry point.
Blu-ray with Poopsploit Up to 12.00 Disc drive and a burned Blu-ray Physical-media dependency applies; buying a disc does not make an incompatible firmware exploitable.
Browser to Relapse 7.00–13.60 Web browser entry The broadest reported firmware range in the guide. It is still a community route, not a permanent modification or an assurance that every homebrew feature is available.
Firmware 14.00 and newer No public route reported in the October 13, 2026 snapshot None established by the cited material “No public route reported” does not prove that no undisclosed vulnerability exists; it means no documented public path was identified in the status used here.

The ranges overlap because several entry points target different firmware generations. A console on 10.00, for example, may appear in more than one row, but the available route can depend on whether it has a usable browser, the required application state or a disc drive. Do not add the ranges together or assume that the newest route automatically has the same capabilities as an older one.

Which PS5 models can run homebrew?

The community guide reports that Relapse covers every PS5 model family, including the original launch hardware, Slim systems and Pro systems. That is model coverage as described by the guide, not a laboratory reliability result. The inspected material does not provide success rates by chassis, motherboard revision, storage configuration or regional edition.

Original PS5

Original disc and digital models are represented in the broad Relapse claim. A disc drive is relevant only when you choose one of the Blu-ray entry points; it is not identified as a requirement for every browser or application route.

PS5 Slim

The guide includes Slim consoles in the Relapse model range. Slim availability should still be checked against the installed firmware. A Slim with firmware 14.00 is not made compatible merely because another Slim on 13.60 is listed.

PS5 Pro

Pro systems are also included in the guide’s Relapse coverage. As with the other families, the documentation does not establish identical behavior across all hardware revisions, nor does it show that every Linux, emulator, backup or other homebrew payload runs on every Pro firmware.

Disc-drive question

A physical drive matters specifically to the Blu-ray routes. Those routes require a drive and a burned Blu-ray. Digital-only consoles cannot satisfy that dependency. Recordable media is therefore a route-specific consumable, not a general jailbreak product and not a way to bypass an unsupported firmware version.

Can a route exist without giving you full homebrew access?

Yes. “An exploit exists” can describe several different levels of access, and the distinction is important when deciding whether a console meets your goal.

UMTX’s documented limitation

PS5Dev’s UMTX documentation describes read/write access but not code execution. It attributes that limitation to execute-only kernel text pages and the inability to read kernel text pointers without causing a panic. The same documentation says hypervisor kernel write protection prevents installing kernel patches or hooks and points to control-flow-integrity and supervisor protections.

For the UMTX route described there, firmware 6.00 and later also requires a new WebKit exploit. That requirement belongs to that particular chain; it should not be generalized to every PS5 route or to Relapse.

Entry point versus kernel exploit

An entry point is the way a user reaches vulnerable code, such as a browser, an application or a Blu-ray. The kernel exploit is a separate layer. A route table can therefore show a browser-to-Relapse path through 13.60 without proving that every payload, kernel patch, Linux setup or homebrew application operates across the entire range.

Payload compatibility

Homebrew is not one feature. A route may support demonstrations, debugging or limited userland experiments while lacking the privileges needed for kernel hooks, persistent services or hardware-specific drivers. Check documentation for the exact payload and firmware combination instead of treating the route name as a guarantee.

Is the jailbreak permanent?

The guide characterizes the listed jailbreaks as tethered in the practical sense that a reboot or full power-off loses the modified state. After restarting, the route must be run again. That behavior affects daily use: an unexpected restart, a system crash or a power interruption can return the console to its normal state until the entry process is repeated.

Tethered status also means that a successful first run does not prove permanent installation. It is different from a modification that survives every reboot, and it should be considered when evaluating whether homebrew is worth the inconvenience.

Can you jailbreak a PS5 on the latest firmware?

As of the October 13, 2026 snapshot, no public route was reported for firmware 14.00 or newer. Ars Technica reported that firmware 14.00 was released in mid-September 2026 and described Relapse as working through firmware 13.6. Therefore, a PS5 that has already installed 14.00 should not be described as publicly jailbreakable on the evidence available here.

“Latest firmware” changes over time and can vary by the date on which a console checks for updates. Confirm the version shown under Console Information rather than relying on a purchase date, a model number or a screenshot from an older guide. If your system is on 13.60 or below, the existence of a reported route still does not establish that every desired payload works or that the process is reliable on your exact hardware.

Update decisions and the risk of losing a compatible firmware

Updating can improve security, add features and restore compatibility with applications or online services, but it can also move a console beyond a community route’s reported ceiling. Sony’s update guidance says some applications or content may require an update and strongly recommends installing current updates for security and proper functioning. That official advice is aimed at normal PlayStation use, not at preserving homebrew compatibility.

Sony also warns that using nonofficial update data or methods, or installing system software on an altered or modified console, may prevent proper operation and may affect warranty and repair services. Reinstalling system software deletes console data. These consequences make a firmware decision a trade-off rather than a routine “update or do not update” recommendation.

  • If official games, current services and security are your priority: staying current follows Sony’s stated guidance.
  • If a documented homebrew route is your priority: first record the exact firmware and read the current route documentation; an update may remove the reported compatibility.
  • If the console is needed for dependable everyday use: account for tethered recovery after every reboot and for the possibility that a failed experiment requires restoring official software.

Platform terms, warranty and legal context

Sony’s US PS5 System Software License Agreement prohibits several forms of circumvention and unauthorized modification. It states: “You may not (i) use any unauthorized, illegal, counterfeit or modified hardware or software with System Software; (ii) use tools to bypass, disable or circumvent any PS5 system encryption, security or authentication mechanism; (iii) reinstall earlier versions of the System Software (‘downgrading’).” The agreement also addresses modifying or reverse engineering system software and using it to develop or distribute unauthorized software or hardware.

The license says its restrictions apply to the greatest extent permitted by the law in the user’s jurisdiction. That qualification matters: the contractual position is not a universal statement of what is lawful everywhere. Warranty, repair and account consequences can also depend on region and the facts of an individual case. This article cannot determine the legal position for a particular country.

For security researchers, Sony maintains vulnerability-disclosure programs, including the PlayStation Bug Bounty. Reporting a vulnerability through an official program is different from using a public exploit to circumvent consumer-console protections; one should not be presented as an endorsement of the other.

A practical compatibility checklist

  1. Read the exact firmware: use Settings > System > System Software > Console Information and record the full number.
  2. Compare the date of the compatibility information: the ranges above are a snapshot from October 13, 2026 and can become outdated.
  3. Match the entry point: determine whether the documented route needs a browser, the YouTube application or a Blu-ray drive and burned disc.
  4. Separate route access from payload goals: verify whether the documentation covers the specific homebrew application, kernel feature or operating-system experiment you want.
  5. Check hardware assumptions: Relapse is reported for original, Slim and Pro models, while Blu-ray routes additionally require a physical drive.
  6. Plan for reboot loss: treat the listed jailbreaks as tethered and expect to rerun the route after a restart or full power-off.
  7. Evaluate official-service consequences: read Sony’s current update guidance and license terms for your region before modifying or updating the console.

Common compatibility mistakes

Confusing a model number with firmware

The chassis name cannot answer the compatibility question by itself. Two identical-looking consoles can have different system software, and the newer firmware may fall outside a route’s range.

Treating an anecdote as a success rate

No robust published statistic establishes success by firmware, hardware revision or route. Individual reports can show that a setup worked for one person, but they are not a measured reliability rate.

Assuming a disc solves every problem

A burned Blu-ray is useful only for the documented Blu-ray entry points and only on a console with a drive. It cannot create an exploit for firmware 14.00 or replace a missing browser or application dependency.

Calling userland access a full jailbreak

UMTX’s documented read/write capability without code execution illustrates why access levels matter. A route name alone does not prove kernel patching, hooks, persistence or compatibility with every homebrew package.

Updating before checking

If a console is on a firmware covered by a reported route, installing a newer update can move it outside that range. Record the version and understand the consequences before accepting an update.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish

The strongest current conclusion is narrow: community documentation reports routes through firmware 13.60, a separate report describes Relapse through 13.6, and no public route was reported for 14.00 or newer in the October 2026 snapshot. The same documentation reports broad model coverage, including Slim and Pro, but does not provide controlled testing across every hardware revision.

Those facts support a firmware-first decision process, not a promise of successful installation or a universal homebrew feature list. Recheck the console’s version and the current route documentation immediately before making an update, hardware or warranty decision.
