There is no source-backed universal winner between the PS5 home screen and the Xbox dashboard. The easier interface depends on how you organize information and which controls you reach most often. PS5 is a strong fit if you want a clear separation between games and media, game-specific hubs, and a customizable Control Center. Xbox is a strong fit if you prefer a Home screen built around shortcuts, pinned games, and user-defined groups.
Those are feature-based conclusions, not results from a controlled usability test. The official PlayStation and Xbox materials describe what each interface does, but they do not publish a head-to-head ease-of-use score.
What “easier to use” should mean here
Home-screen usability is not one measurement. A dashboard can be easy for launching a recently played game but less convenient for managing a large library, or simple for a new user while offering fewer ways to personalize the layout. For this comparison, evaluate five practical tasks:
- Reaching common destinations: games, media, the store, search, settings, friends, notifications and power controls.
- Organizing content: whether you prefer separate areas, game hubs, pinned items or custom groups.
- Making in-game changes: switching activities, adjusting audio or microphone controls, checking notifications and accessing other shortcuts without closing the game.
- Using accessibility tools: screen reading, text and display adjustments, captions, chat transcription, audio options, quick settings and controller remapping.
- Personalizing the layout: arranging widgets, backgrounds, shortcuts, pinned games or groups.
The “better” choice is therefore conditional. Someone who values a clean division between play and entertainment may find PS5 more understandable, while someone who wants a dashboard arranged around personally chosen collections may prefer Xbox.

How the PS5 home screen is organized
Games and Media are separate destinations
Sony’s PS5 quick-start guide divides the main Home experience into Games and Media. Games contains installed games, PlayStation Store and other game-related apps. Media contains music, video and other non-game apps. That split gives the interface a clear conceptual boundary: entertainment apps do not compete with games in the same top-level area.
This arrangement can reduce visual clutter for a household that uses the console for both play and streaming. It can also add a step when you regularly move between a game and a media app, because you must think in terms of which Home area contains the destination. Whether that is helpful or inconvenient depends on whether categorization or one-page access is your priority.
Game hubs collect information around a title
PS5 game hubs gather information associated with a game rather than treating the title as only an icon to launch. Sony describes activities and challenges that can be reached through the Control Center. For players who want contextual information about what to do next, this game-centered model keeps related details close to the title.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The trade-off is that a hub-oriented interface presents more layers than a simple grid. A player who only wants to start a game may see additional information that is irrelevant to that session, while a completion-focused player may appreciate having activities and challenges surfaced in the same ecosystem.
The Welcome hub emphasizes widgets and visual presets
Sony describes a customizable Welcome hub with widgets, presets and backgrounds. This provides a visual starting point that can be tailored instead of leaving every user with exactly the same arrangement. The available choices and appearance can change as Sony updates the system, so treat the documented feature as a capability rather than a guarantee of a particular widget set.

Control Center keeps common actions in-game
Pressing the PS button opens the PS5 Control Center without requiring you to leave the running game. Sony lists Home, Switcher, Notifications, Game Base, Music, Sound, Mic, Accessories, Profile and Power among the controls, although availability depends on context. Users can rearrange or hide some controls.
That design is useful when the task is temporary: check a notification, change microphone behavior, switch activities or reach a power option, then return to play. It separates quick actions from the full Home screen, so you do not have to navigate away simply to make a small adjustment.

Home starts with shortcuts to major destinations
Microsoft’s July 2023 Xbox Home announcement describes a top quick-access menu for Library, Microsoft Store, Game Pass, Search and Settings. It also lists personalized game content, community updates and media discovery. The intent is a consolidated Home screen where frequently used destinations remain visible rather than being hidden behind multiple menus.
For a new owner, these labels provide recognizable signposts. For an experienced player, the same row can become visual overhead if most of the destinations are rarely used. The practical advantage is direct access; the possible cost is a busier first screen.
Pinned games and groups support collection-based organization
Xbox Home supports pinned games and groups, including personalized game lists and system or curated groups. This suits users who think in collections: games to finish, multiplayer titles, family games or a queue for the weekend. Instead of relying only on recency, you can bring the categories you use most often to the front of Home.

April 2026 expanded group controls
Microsoft’s April 30, 2026 update says players can add up to ten groups to Home, customize a console color and disable Quick Resume on a per-game basis. The announcement says the expanded group feature was available to all players with that update. Because these options depend on system software, check that the console has the relevant update before treating ten groups or per-game Quick Resume controls as guaranteed on every device.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The Guide provides an in-game control layer
On Xbox, the Xbox button opens the Guide while a game or app is running. Microsoft documents Quick Settings in the Guide for toggling accessibility features without leaving the current activity. This creates a parallel to the PS5 Control Center: the dashboard remains available as an overlay instead of forcing a full return to Home.
Which interface is easier for common tasks?
Starting a recently played game
Both platforms are designed to keep games close to Home, but they express that goal differently. PS5 places games in its dedicated Games area and adds title-specific hubs. Xbox combines pinned games, personalized lists and groups with its broader Home. If you normally launch one or two recent titles, either model should be understandable; the deciding question is whether you want those titles surrounded by game information or arranged as part of a collection.
Finding a store, subscription area or search
Xbox’s documented Home design explicitly names Library, Microsoft Store, Game Pass, Search and Settings in a top quick-access menu. That is a straightforward map for users who frequently jump between those destinations. PS5 places PlayStation Store and other game-related apps in Games, while its Control Center exposes system functions during play. A PS5 user who prefers a category-based layout may find that structure predictable, but someone who wants all major destinations listed together may favor Xbox’s shortcut approach.
Moving between games and media
PS5’s Games/Media split makes the distinction obvious: games live in one area and music or video apps in another. Xbox’s Home combines game and media discovery in one overall experience. Choose PS5 if separating those activities helps you focus; choose Xbox if keeping them within one Home screen reduces the number of places you remember.

Managing a large library
Xbox’s groups and pinned content are the more explicit organization tools in the documented feature set. The 2026 limit of ten Home groups gives users a defined space for recurring categories, subject to the update being installed. PS5’s hubs and Welcome widgets emphasize information and presentation around games rather than a documented ten-group library system. A player with many self-defined categories should therefore examine Xbox first, while a player who wants richer context per title may prefer PS5’s hubs.
Changing something without closing a game
PS5’s Control Center lists a broad set of destinations, including Switcher, Notifications, Game Base, Music, Sound, Mic, Accessories, Profile and Power. Xbox’s Guide provides Quick Settings for accessibility and other in-game navigation. Both avoid a full exit to Home, but the controls each platform exposes are not identical. List the three actions you perform most often—such as microphone changes, party access or switching—and see which console places them in its overlay.
Accessibility: compare the path, not just the feature list
PS5 accessibility controls
Sony documents controller settings, display-area enlargement, text and display settings, a screen reader, captions, chat transcription and mono audio. The screen reader reads on-screen text and provides spoken operating guidance. Sony also says Accessibility can be added to the Control Center for quicker adjustments.
Screen-reader language support is limited and tied to the console language, and regional availability can vary. If spoken navigation is essential, confirm that your preferred language is supported before purchase or setup. Display enlargement, captions, chat transcription and mono audio address different needs, so evaluate each separately instead of treating “accessibility” as one switch.

Microsoft describes Quick Settings in the Guide as a way to toggle accessibility features without leaving a game or app. Microsoft’s March 2022 update also describes remapping Xbox Wireless Controller actions in the Xbox Accessories app, including remaps that can assist players with disabilities.

Quick access is valuable when a setting must change during play, while remapping matters when the default physical layout is difficult to use. The documented Xbox material does not establish that its accessibility tools are easier than PS5’s screen reader or display tools; the relevant question is which specific function you need and how often you adjust it.

PS5 personalization is presented through the Welcome hub’s widgets, presets and backgrounds, plus the ability to rearrange or hide some Control Center controls. This approach changes the visual starting point and the in-game shortcut layer.
Xbox personalization is organized around pinned games, groups and console color. The April 2026 update’s ten-group allowance is particularly relevant if your Home screen is a working index of collections. These models serve different mental habits: PS5 lets you shape a dashboard presentation, while Xbox lets you shape a catalog of destinations.
A practical orientation routine on each console
PS5
- From Home, identify the Games and Media areas so you know where game and non-game apps are grouped.
- Open a game and press the PS button to display Control Center.
- Locate the controls relevant to your routine, such as Switcher, Game Base, Music, Sound, Mic, Notifications and Power.
- Use the available customization options to rearrange or hide controls you do not use.
- Open the Accessibility settings and, if useful, add Accessibility to Control Center for faster changes.
- Review the Welcome hub’s widgets, presets and backgrounds and keep only the presentation elements that help you find content.
Xbox
- On Home, identify the top shortcuts for Library, Microsoft Store, Game Pass, Search and Settings.
- Pin the games you launch most often and create groups that match your actual categories.
- If the console is running the April 30, 2026 software described by Microsoft, arrange up to ten groups on Home and set a console color.
- Open a game and press the Xbox button to display the Guide.
- Use Guide Quick Settings when you need to change an accessibility option without leaving the game.
- For controller-layout needs, open the Xbox Accessories app and review the available action-remapping options.
- If a particular title behaves poorly with Quick Resume, use the documented per-game option to disable it, provided your system software includes that control.
Choose PS5 if these statements sound like you
- You want games and media clearly separated at the top level.
- You value information attached to each game, including activities and challenges.
- You prefer a dedicated in-game overlay with controls for switching, notifications, audio, microphone, accessories, profile and power.
- You need a screen reader, display adjustments, captions, chat transcription or mono audio and want Accessibility available from the Control Center.
- You enjoy changing widgets, presets and backgrounds more than maintaining a collection of manual groups.
Choose Xbox if these statements sound like you
- You want Library, Store, subscription content, Search and Settings represented as prominent Home shortcuts.
- You organize games into named collections and want pinned content to remain visible.
- You would use up to ten Home groups, console color customization or per-game Quick Resume controls on supported 2026 software.
- You want Guide Quick Settings for accessibility changes during a game.
- You need controller-action remapping through the Xbox Accessories app.
Important limits and version caveats
The PS5 Games/Media distinction comes from Sony’s quick-start guide, an early manual; current navigation can differ after system updates. Sony’s feature and accessibility descriptions also note that availability may depend on language, region or context.
The Xbox details combine Microsoft’s July 2023 Home announcement with its April 30, 2026 update. A feature described in an announcement may require a particular system version, and rollout status can change. Check the software version and the options shown on your own console before relying on an exact group limit, color control or Quick Resume setting.
Most importantly, neither manufacturer publishes a controlled PS5-versus-Xbox navigation study in these materials. The recommendation here is an evidence-based fit between documented interface structures and different user preferences, not a measured claim that one dashboard is universally faster or simpler.
