Choose Performance when smoother motion and responsiveness matter most; choose Fidelity or Resolution when you prefer richer visuals. The exact frame-rate target, resolution, and ray-tracing effects depend on the game: PS5 mode names are not universal specifications.
What Performance and Fidelity modes mean
Sony describes the PS5’s Performance Mode preset as making game motion smoother, while Resolution Mode provides higher graphic quality. These presets apply only to games that offer the corresponding modes; each developer decides what the settings change.
In practice, a game may trade visual detail or rendering resolution for a higher frame-rate target, or prioritize image quality at a lower target. But “Performance,” “Fidelity,” “Quality,” and “Resolution” do not guarantee the same settings from one game to another. Check the game’s own graphics-menu descriptions and published notes.
How the modes compare in GTA V on PS5
GTA V provides a clear example of how one game can define several distinct choices. Rockstar’s March 4, 2022 PlayStation announcement gives these targets for its PS5 version:

These are Rockstar’s stated targets and descriptions for GTA V on PS5, not independently measured results or promises about other games. The example also shows why ray tracing does not automatically mean a 30 FPS target: GTA V’s Performance RT mode combines ray tracing with a 60 FPS target.
What ray tracing changes—and what it does not tell you
Ray tracing is a rendering technique used for visual effects such as more realistic reflections or lighting. Whether a mode includes it is only one part of the trade-off. A ray-tracing mode might prioritize image quality, combine the effect with a higher frame-rate target, or use a different mix of settings, depending on the game.

Look for the game’s stated frame-rate target, resolution or upscaling description, and which effects are enabled. Do not infer a target from a label such as “Fidelity” or “Performance RT” alone.
How to choose a mode
- Choose Performance if responsive controls and smoother motion are more important to you than the game’s highest available visual quality.
- Choose Fidelity or Resolution if you prefer the game’s visual-quality-focused option and are comfortable with its stated frame-rate target.
- Choose a hybrid such as Performance RT if you want a particular combination of effects and motion, after checking the game’s own description.
If the game offers more than one mode, try each in a scene you know. Your preference may depend on the game and the display you use; there is no single best preset for every player or title.

PS5 Pro and game-specific options
PS5 Pro games can add or change graphics options, so a mode list on one console version may not match another. Sony’s developer examples show that studios define their own combinations rather than following a single platform-wide formula. Check the particular game’s menu and official notes for the console version you are playing.

Display features are separate from a game’s graphics preset. Sony says Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) can synchronize a compatible display’s refresh rate with PS5 graphical output. It requires a compatible game and an HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible TV or monitor, and results vary by game and display. A 120 Hz output option also depends on compatible games and displays.

To inspect the console’s video-output settings, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. The PS5 detects TV capabilities and selects an available output resolution; a compatible display is required for 1440p output. Console output resolution and a game’s internal rendering resolution are different things: a game can render internally at one resolution and output an upscaled image.
ALLM is another optional display feature. On compatible TVs, it may appear as Game Mode in the television’s settings. None of these display features is a requirement for choosing Performance or Fidelity in a game.
