Sometimes, upgrading a PS4 game to its PS5 version is free; sometimes it costs money, and some offers are available only for a limited period. There is no universal upgrade price or entitlement. PlayStation assigns the eligibility, price and duration to each game, so the reliable answer appears on that title’s game hub or PlayStation Store listing.
For the official rules, see PlayStation’s guide to upgrading an eligible PS4 game. A physical-disc upgrade produces a digital PS5 license but requires a PS5 with a disc drive and the original disc inserted whenever you play. An eligible digital PS4 purchase can be upgraded on either PS5 model.
What decides whether you pay
PlayStation describes three possible forms of a game-specific upgrade: no additional cost, a required purchase, or an offer available for a limited time. Its support wording is explicit: “Depending on the game, this upgrade may occur at no additional cost, may require a purchase, and may be available for a limited time.”
That means a publisher’s policy, edition and region matter more than the fact that you own a PS4 copy. Do not rely on a general PS5 upgrade list, an old launch announcement or another player’s price. Open the game hub while signed in to the account that owns the game and read the offer currently displayed there. The listing should identify whether the PS5 version is free or paid and whether any deadline applies.

Choose the path that matches your copy
| What you own | Where the upgrade is checked | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Physical PS4 disc | The game hub after inserting the disc | Requires a PS5 with a disc drive; the disc remains your play license |
| Digital PS4 purchase | PlayStation Store or Search, then the PS5 game hub | Works on either PS5 model when that title offers an upgrade |
| PS4 game claimed through PlayStation Plus | The title’s own terms and store page | Usually excluded unless the game specifically says otherwise |
| Both PS4 and PS5 versions already owned | Game Library options | Select the desired version before downloading or launching |
All four situations are governed by the individual title’s current offer. Ownership of a PS4 game alone does not guarantee a PS5 entitlement.
Upgrading a physical PS4 disc
Hardware and account requirements
- You need a PS5 model with a disc drive. A PS4 disc cannot be used on a PS5 Digital Edition.
- The disc must be from the same country or region as the PlayStation account used for the upgrade.
- An internet connection is required to claim and download the digital PS5 version.
- The title must show an eligible upgrade offer; not every PS4 disc qualifies.
The result is a digital PS5 version, not a conversion of the disc into a disc-based PS5 edition. Keep the PS4 disc available: the console checks it whenever you start the upgraded digital game.
Step-by-step procedure
- Sign in on the disc-drive PS5 with the account that will own the upgrade.
- Insert the PS4 game disc.
- Open the game’s hub from the home screen.
- Select the upgrade offer shown for the PS5 version.
- Read the displayed terms, including the price and any end date. Confirm only if the offer suits you.
- Choose the free claim or complete the purchase at the price shown, then download the PS5 version.
- Leave the PS4 disc inserted whenever you play the digital PS5 game.
If the disc is removed, the digital upgrade does not provide a separate right to launch the game. Lending, selling or changing the disc therefore removes the physical proof of ownership needed for play.

Upgrading a digital PS4 purchase
A qualifying digital PS4 purchase does not depend on a disc drive. The upgrade can be claimed on a PS5 with a drive or on a PS5 Digital Edition, provided the title’s store page offers one.
- Sign in to the PS5 account that bought the digital PS4 game.
- Use Search or open PlayStation Store and find the PS5 version of the exact game.
- Open its game hub and inspect the upgrade panel.
- Confirm whether the offer is free, paid or time-limited.
- Claim or purchase it, then download the PS5 version.
Check the edition name carefully. Deluxe, special, bundled and region-specific editions can have different entitlements, and an offer for one edition does not automatically establish an offer for another.
Why a PlayStation Plus claim may not qualify
PlayStation says PS4 games redeemed as a PlayStation Plus benefit are not eligible for an upgrade unless the game’s terms specifically indicate otherwise. A subscription claim is therefore different from buying the game outright.

- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, Disc Drive, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold separately
If you obtained the game through Plus, open that title’s current game hub and look for an explicit PS5 upgrade entitlement. Do not assume that a free upgrade available to purchasers also applies to a Plus claim. If no qualifying offer appears, the support rule gives you no automatic upgrade right.

Disc-drive PS5 versus Digital Edition
| PS5 hardware | Physical PS4 copy | Digital PS4 purchase |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 with disc drive | Eligible; insert the disc to claim and to play | Eligible when the game offers an upgrade |
| PS5 Digital Edition | Not supported because it cannot read the PS4 disc | Eligible when the game offers an upgrade |
The console choice matters only after you identify what you own. A digital owner can use either model, while a disc owner must have hardware capable of reading that disc. Buying or borrowing a PS4 disc does not create a usable upgrade path on a Digital Edition.
Selecting the correct version after upgrading
When both versions are associated with your account, the Game Library can show separate choices. Highlight the game, open its options and select the version you want to download or play.
- The PS4 version has a “PS4” label beside the title.
- The PS5 version displays the title without that label.
Use the label before starting a download, particularly when both versions appear in search results or occupy space on the console. Choosing the wrong entry does not change your entitlement; it simply installs or launches a different version.
How to interpret price and time limits
Free offers
A free upgrade means the store presents the PS5 entitlement at no additional charge for that game and qualifying ownership type. “Free” is not a platform-wide promise: another game, edition or ownership route can use different terms.
Paid upgrades
A paid upgrade requires the amount displayed in the current offer. Because prices can vary by title, edition, currency and region, quoting a single standard fee would be misleading. The game hub is the authoritative place to see the amount your account will pay.

Limited-time offers
A limited-time offer can disappear after its stated end date. If you intend to upgrade, read the deadline before postponing the claim. A historical free offer is not evidence that the same offer remains active.

In its November 2020 “PS5: The Ultimate FAQ,” PlayStation said more than 99% of 4,000-plus PS4 games were compatible with PS5. That was a launch-era statement, not a current compatibility census. It indicates broad backward compatibility but does not tell you whether a specific game has a PS5 upgrade, what it costs or how long the offer lasts.
The same 2020 FAQ cited the PS4 versions of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Sackboy: A Big Adventure as examples whose PS5 digital upgrades were available at no additional cost at that time. Those examples are historical. Check the live listing before treating either title—or any other game—as free today. The original FAQ is available on PlayStation.Blog.
Fixing the most common upgrade problems
No upgrade button appears
- Confirm that you opened the PS5 game hub, not only the PS4 product page.
- Check that the exact edition and account are correct.
- If the game came from PlayStation Plus, verify whether its terms exclude subscription claims.
- Look for a stated expiration date; a previous offer may no longer be live.
The disc is rejected or the game remains locked
- Make sure the PS5 actually has a disc drive.
- Check that the disc’s country or region matches the PlayStation account.
- Insert the disc before opening the game hub and keep it inserted after installation.
- Confirm that the console is online while claiming and downloading the upgrade.
The wrong version downloads
Open Game Library, highlight the title and use the options menu to choose the entry labeled “PS4” or the unlabeled PS5 entry. Verify the label again before launching.
The offer price differs from an old article or video
Treat the current game-hub price as authoritative. Upgrade terms can be title-specific and time-limited, while launch-era coverage records only what was offered at that earlier date.
A practical check before you spend
- Identify whether your copy is physical, digital or a PlayStation Plus claim.
- Confirm the PS5 hardware: disc-drive model for a physical disc, either model for an eligible digital purchase.
- Sign in to the account that owns or claimed the game.
- Open the exact PS5 game hub and read the offer, price and deadline.
- For a disc, verify the country or region match and keep the disc after upgrading.
- After claiming, select the correct PS5 entry in Game Library before downloading.
The answer to “Do I have to pay?” is therefore game-specific: inspect the live offer first, then apply the hardware and ownership rules above. A free, paid or time-limited upgrade is possible, but none should be assumed from the PS4 label alone.
