Start with the PlayStation Network status page, then pause and resume the download. Test the PS5 connection at Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection, confirm that storage is available, and install any system-software update. For the most reliable improvement, connect the console to the router with Ethernet. If you must use Wi‑Fi, reduce distance and obstructions, restart the router, and enable internet access plus automatic downloads in Rest Mode. Persistent failures may require a cancel-and-redownload attempt or Safe Mode maintenance; DNS, static-IP and port changes are advanced error troubleshooting, not guaranteed speed upgrades.
Why a PS5 download can be slow
Download time is limited by more than the speed advertised by your internet provider. The PlayStation Network may be busy or undergoing maintenance, your home network may have wireless interference, the router may need a restart, or the PS5 may be short on free storage or running outdated system software. A game can also appear stuck when the transfer has paused or when the console is processing and installing data.
No universal Mbps target or percentage improvement is published in the first-party guidance reviewed for PS5 downloads. Treat every change below as a way to remove a likely bottleneck, not as a promised speed multiplier. A connection test is a snapshot, not a guarantee that the PlayStation Store will sustain the same rate throughout a large download.
Separate the symptoms before changing settings. A slow but steadily increasing percentage usually points to bandwidth, congestion, or service load. A percentage that never changes may be paused, waiting for installation space, or affected by a failed transfer. If several online services are unavailable at once, check for an outage before modifying the console.

Use this five-minute triage sequence first
1. Check PlayStation service status
Open the official PlayStation status page and look for an outage or scheduled maintenance affecting PlayStation Store, downloads, or gaming services. If there is an incident, changing DNS or buying networking hardware will not fix the service-side problem; wait for the status to clear and retry. Note the time of the check, because a later successful test may simply mean maintenance has ended.
2. Pause and resume the item
From the PS5 home screen, open Downloads/Uploads, highlight the game or update, and select Pause. Select it again and choose Resume. Sony’s support instruction is: “Select Pause and Resume to restart.” This is the least disruptive first action because it refreshes the transfer without deleting the data already received. Give the transfer a little time after resuming; the displayed rate can fluctuate while the console reconnects.
3. Cancel a failed item and download it again
If the transfer repeatedly errors, remains at the same percentage, or will not resume, select the item in Downloads/Uploads, choose Cancel and Delete, then open Game Library and start the download again. This removes the incomplete download, so use it after pause/resume rather than as the first step. Make sure you know your account credentials and have enough free space before starting over.

Large games may download in sections and then spend time unpacking, copying, or installing. Watch the status text and available storage before assuming the network has stopped. Leave the console powered on and avoid interrupting the process while it changes from downloading to installing. A quiet network during this phase will not necessarily make file processing faster.
Verify the PS5 before changing network settings
Run the built-in connection test
- Open Settings.
- Select Network.
- Open Connection Status.
- Choose Test Internet Connection.
Use the result to separate a console-to-router problem from a broader PlayStation service issue. A failed test means you should fix the local connection before repeatedly restarting the download. A successful test does not guarantee a fast Store transfer, but it confirms that the PS5 can reach the internet at the time of testing. Run the test again after each major change so you can tell which step altered the result.
Check free storage
Go to Settings > Storage and review the available space. Make room if the game, patch, or temporary installation data cannot fit. Delete or move content you no longer need, then retry the download. A full drive can cause an apparent stall or a failed installation even when the internet connection is working. Check free space again after deleting a game, because queued updates and temporary files can still require room.
Install current system software
Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Install an available update, restart if requested, and try the download again. Keeping the console current removes compatibility and system-feature issues that can otherwise look like a network failure. Do not interrupt a system update by removing power.

Ethernet is the best diagnostic and stability test
Sony recommends a wired connection where possible. Its PS5 Quick Start Guide states: “For a wired connection to the internet, use a LAN cable (not included).” Connect an Ethernet cable from the PS5’s LAN port directly to an available router port, then configure the connection under Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection. Select the wired connection and run Test Internet Connection again.
A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is a practical choice for a direct router connection; choose a length that reaches without tension or a trip hazard. The cable is primarily a way to test and maintain a stable wired link. It cannot increase the speed supplied by your internet plan or bypass a PlayStation service outage. Since Sony says the cable is not included, check that you have one before planning a wired test.
Compare the same download over wired and Wi‑Fi under similar conditions. If Ethernet is consistently steadier, the limiting factor is likely wireless coverage, interference, or router placement rather than the PS5’s storage or software. If both connections behave identically, investigate service status, internet-provider congestion, and other devices using the connection instead of assuming the Wi‑Fi radio is at fault.
Improve Wi‑Fi conditions without buying equipment
Reduce distance and obstructions
Move the PS5 closer to the router and remove objects that block or interfere with the wireless signal. Avoid enclosing the console in a cabinet or placing it behind dense furniture, metal surfaces, or other electronics that can add interference. Keep the console ventilated while repositioning it. Test from the same room first, then move it back only after you know whether distance changed the behavior.
Restart the router or modem correctly
Power off the router or modem, wait at least five minutes, then power it back on and allow it to reconnect fully before testing the PS5. This longer restart is the interval specified in PlayStation troubleshooting guidance. If your router offers a firmware update, install it according to the manufacturer’s instructions before repeating the connection test. Restarting clears a temporary fault; it does not raise the maximum speed of your service plan.
Check other traffic on the home network
Pause large uploads, cloud backups, video streams, and other game downloads on the same connection while testing. This does not change the PS5’s maximum line speed, but it prevents competing devices from consuming the available bandwidth during the test. If performance improves only when other devices are idle, schedule large transfers for different times or use your router’s traffic-management features if it supports them.
These steps address local wireless conditions; Sony does not publish a guaranteed Mbps increase for moving the console, restarting a router, or updating firmware. A router upgrade is not the first step when simple placement or congestion explains the slowdown.

Configure Rest Mode for unattended downloads
Rest Mode can download while you are away, but only when the required options are enabled. Sony’s guidance says: “To download games while in rest mode, set your console to stay connected to the internet.” Configure both internet connectivity and the automatic-download behavior:

- Open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Return to Settings and open Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates.
- Enable Auto-Download and, if you want updates applied without confirmation, Auto-Install in Rest Mode.
- Leave the PS5 in Rest Mode rather than fully powering it off when you want downloads to continue unattended.
Auto-Download lets the console fetch available content while preserving your choice about installation. Auto-Install in Rest Mode goes further by installing eligible updates automatically. Choose the latter only if you are comfortable with the console applying updates while you are away. Rest Mode changes when downloading can occur; it does not guarantee a higher transfer rate than an awake console on the same connection.
Choose the least disruptive fix that matches the symptom

Use the table from top to bottom when possible. Pause/resume affects only the transfer. Cancel-and-redownload consumes the transfer again. Safe Mode is a system-level step, so reserve it for persistent problems rather than a download that is merely slower than expected.
Use Safe Mode when ordinary retries do not work
For a download that remains stuck after service, storage, software, router, and connection checks, use the PS5 Safe Mode tools documented by PlayStation. First turn the console completely off. Press and hold the power button again and release it after the second beep, then connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button. Select Clear System Software Cache when available. This removes temporary system data without being a normal game deletion.
Rebuild Database is another documented option for system-feature or content-index problems. It can take time while the console reorganizes its content information, so do not interrupt power. Safe Mode menus can vary with system software; read each option on screen and avoid reset or initialization choices unless you have a separate backup and specifically intend to erase the console.

After the PS5 restarts, run the connection test, check storage, and retry the download. If only one title fails while other downloads work, cancel and redownload that title before treating the issue as a console-wide fault. If multiple titles fail and Safe Mode does not help, document the error code and contact PlayStation Support rather than repeatedly changing unrelated network settings.
DNS, static IP, and port changes: advanced troubleshooting only
PlayStation error guidance includes DNS changes, static IP configuration, and port-related settings for specific connection failures. These options can resolve a routing or address-assignment problem, but they are not guaranteed download-speed boosts. A different DNS resolver may affect how quickly a service address is found; it cannot create additional bandwidth once the transfer starts.

Before changing advanced settings, record the original values or take screenshots. Change one setting at a time, run Test Internet Connection, and retry the download. If the result worsens, restore the original automatic configuration. Port forwarding should be done only when a documented error or network requirement calls for it; opening unrelated ports adds complexity without proving a download benefit. Avoid copying settings from an unrelated console or game guide, because router menus and network requirements differ.
When a router or mesh upgrade is justified
Consider new networking hardware only after a wired test and basic Wi‑Fi troubleshooting establish that coverage or capacity is the home-network bottleneck. A replacement router or mesh system should be evaluated for:

- Placement options that keep a node or router close to the console without blocking ventilation.
- Ability to handle simultaneous streaming, uploads, and downloads in your household.
Router placement is the lower-cost, lower-effort experiment; replacing hardware is a larger commitment. If Ethernet performs normally but Wi‑Fi does not, improving coverage can be worthwhile. If Ethernet is also slow while PlayStation reports an outage or your internet service is congested, a new router will not solve that external limitation. Verify the bottleneck before purchasing equipment.

A successful connection test plus a stable wired link points away from the console’s Wi‑Fi radio and toward PlayStation service load, your internet provider, or competing household traffic. A failed connection test points to the router, modem, Wi‑Fi conditions, or account configuration. A download that fails only after reaching the installation stage points to storage or system software rather than raw internet speed. A single corrupt or incomplete title is best handled with Cancel and Delete followed by a fresh download.
Because first-party documentation provides no universal speed-improvement figure, judge each change by repeatable behavior: whether the connection test passes, whether the transfer continues without repeated pauses, and whether the same issue occurs on Ethernet and on another download. Keep notes of the test order and settings so you can undo an unsuccessful change.

Will changing DNS increase my PS5 download speed?
