Short answer: A PS5 normally needs an internet connection to download and install a system-software update. If the console cannot reach Sony’s update service, you can download the official PS5UPDATE.PUP file on an internet-connected PC or Mac and transfer it with a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive. Sony documents installing the current software and reinstalling it after a failure, but not a supported downgrade to an older firmware version.
After updating, offline play depends on whether Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled on the PS5 designated for your account. Eligible purchased games can work without a connection, while online multiplayer, the PlayStation Store, cloud synchronization and other account-connected services still require internet access.
What “PS5 needs internet to update” actually means
There are two supported update workflows, and they have different network requirements:

- Online update: the PS5 connects to the internet, checks Sony’s update service, downloads the system software and installs it from Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- USB update: the PS5 itself does not need to be online during the installation. An internet-connected PC or Mac is still required to download Sony’s official update file, and a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive is needed to move that file to the console.
Sony’s published support guidance does not set a minimum broadband speed or promise a particular download time. Actual duration depends on the update size, your connection and the service’s availability, so leave the console connected until the installation reports completion.

How to update PS5 firmware online
Use the online route when the console can reach PlayStation’s update service. It is the simplest method and keeps your installed games, saves and settings in place when the update is successful.
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select System.
- Open System Software.
- Choose System Software Update and Settings.
- Select the available update and follow the on-screen prompts. Do not turn off the console while the update is downloading or installing.
You can also allow the PS5 to download and install updates while it is in Rest Mode. The console must be configured to stay connected to the internet in Rest Mode; otherwise it cannot retrieve the file while sleeping. Automatic updating is convenient, but it does not change the recovery options if a download repeatedly fails.
How to update PS5 firmware with a USB drive
USB updating is Sony’s documented alternative when the PS5 cannot download the software itself. The console does not need a network connection for the Safe Mode installation, but the computer used to obtain the file does.

- Use a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Make approximately 1.1 GB of free space available for the update file.
- On the USB drive, create a folder named
PS5. Inside it, create a second folder namedUPDATE. - Download the official PS5 system-software file from Sony Interactive Entertainment on the PC or Mac.
- Save the file as
PS5UPDATE.PUPinsidePS5/UPDATE. Folder and file names must use the uppercase spelling shown here.
Sony’s warning is explicit: “Don’t download or install the update using data other than the official update file provided online by Sony Interactive Entertainment.” Do not rename an unofficial package or use a file from a third-party download site.
Install the update in Safe Mode
- Safely eject the USB drive from the computer and connect it to the PS5.
- Turn the PS5 completely off, not merely into Rest Mode.
- Press and hold the console’s power button. Release it after the second beep; this starts Safe Mode.
- Connect the DualSense controller with a USB cable if Safe Mode asks for a controller connection, then press the PS button.
- Select Update System Software.
- Choose Update from USB Storage Device, then select OK.
- Leave the console powered on until the installation finishes. Interrupting the process can damage the console.
If Safe Mode cannot find the file
Check the USB drive before trying another download. Confirm that its format is FAT32 or exFAT, that the path is exactly PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP, and that PS5, UPDATE and PS5UPDATE.PUP use uppercase letters. A file placed in the drive’s root, a folder with a different name or a renamed extension will not be recognized. Re-copy the official file if its download was interrupted or incomplete.
Can you roll back PS5 firmware?
Sony’s published procedures cover installing the current official update and using Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). They do not provide a supported user procedure for installing an older PS5 firmware version. The practical answer is therefore no supported rollback: do not treat an older firmware file, an unofficial downgrade package or an exploit-based method as a normal recovery option.

This is a statement about Sony’s documented support process, not a claim that no technical vulnerability has ever existed. Unofficial downgrade methods can leave the console unusable, expose account or device data and remove any reliable support path. If a new update causes a problem, use the current official software, Safe Mode recovery and PlayStation repair support rather than attempting to force an older version.
Reinstalling is not the same as downgrading
The Safe Mode option Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) installs official system software again; it does not provide a menu for selecting an earlier release. Sony describes this as a factory or hard reset and warns: “Reinstalling the system software on your PS5 console will delete all of the data on your PS5 console.” Treat it as a destructive last resort. Back up saves and other data where possible before choosing it.
Can you play PS5 games offline after an update?
Yes, provided the console is authorized for offline use. Sony says Console Sharing and Offline Play is automatically allowed on the first PS5 used to sign in to an account. When that setting is enabled on the account’s designated PS5, eligible purchased games and content can be used without an active internet connection.
Offline authorization does not turn network features into offline features. You still need internet access for:
- Online multiplayer and other live game services.
- PlayStation Store browsing, purchases and downloads.
- Cloud synchronization and cloud-save access.
- Account checks or other features that contact Sony’s services.
Disc-based games can have an additional requirement: Sony’s system-software notice says an inserted disc may prompt for a later system-software version. If that prompt appears, the game or its required features may not be available until the console is updated.
What to do when a PS5 update is stuck or fails
The download starts but does not finish
Restart the download from the system-software update screen. If the problem recurs, retry using a wired LAN connection where possible; Sony’s Safe Mode guidance specifically recommends a wired connection as a troubleshooting step. Keep the PS5 powered and connected while the retry runs.

The PS5 reaches Safe Mode
Use Update System Software in Safe Mode. If the console cannot obtain the update over its network connection, use Update from USB Storage Device with the folder structure and file name described above.
The USB drive is not recognized
Verify FAT32 or exFAT formatting, free space of about 1.1 GB, uppercase names and the exact PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP path. Re-download the official file on the computer if necessary and copy it again. A different USB drive can help isolate a storage-device fault, but it must still use one of the supported formats.
Every official update attempt fails
Back up data if the console still allows it. Reinstallation through Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) is the final software recovery step because it erases the console. If the installation continues to fail after a correctly prepared USB update, contact PlayStation repair support rather than repeatedly powering the console off during installation.

- Use the online Settings path for a normally connected console.
- For USB recovery, obtain the file on an internet-connected PC or Mac.
- Format the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT and keep about 1.1 GB free.
- Use the exact uppercase path

- Never switch off the PS5 while the update is installing.
- Do not expect Sony-supported installation of an older firmware version.

Will a USB update erase my games and saves?
Choosing Update System Software and then Update from USB Storage Device is the normal update path and preserves console data when it completes successfully. Do not confuse it with Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software), a separate Safe Mode option that deletes all data and should be reserved for last-resort recovery.

Can I downgrade or roll back to an older PS5 firmware version?
