For most people who own a PS5 and want to play its games on a PC screen, PS Remote Play is the better practical choice. It is Sony’s documented PC workflow: the game continues running on your PS5 while the computer receives the video and sends back your controls.
PS5 emulation is a different proposition. Projects such as KytyPS5 are experimental, can boot some 2D games and a selection of 3D games, and remain limited by crashes, graphical glitches, and poor performance. Emulation is worth exploring if you are interested in testing software or following emulator development, but it is not currently a dependable replacement for a PS5 or Remote Play.
The short answer
Choose Remote Play when you already own a PS5 and want the simplest supported way to use a PC display. Choose emulation only when you specifically want to experiment with early software and accept that a particular game may fail to boot, render incorrectly, crash, or run too slowly.

| Factor | PS Remote Play | PS5 emulation |
|---|---|---|
| Where the game runs | Your PS5; the PC receives a stream. | The emulator attempts to execute PS5 software on the PC. |
| PS5 ownership | Required under Sony’s Remote Play guidance. | Not stated as a requirement by the KytyPS5 project, but you need legally obtained game files and system software. |
| Compatibility | Works with compatible PS5 games; games requiring VR or additional peripherals are excluded. | Limited and title-dependent. The project reports crashes, graphical glitches, and poor performance. |
| Internet | Broadband is required between the console and PC. | The game is not streamed from the PS5; local PC hardware and emulator compatibility determine the result. |
| Setup | Install Sony’s app, enable Remote Play, sign in with the same account, and connect a supported controller. | Install changing experimental builds and troubleshoot each title yourself. |
| Best fit | PS5 owners who want a practical way to play on a computer display. | Technically curious users testing a specific title or contributing to emulator development. |
How the two methods actually work
Remote Play is console streaming
Remote Play does not turn a PC into a standalone PlayStation 5. Sony’s application displays the PS5’s output on the computer and sends your controller input back to the console. The PS5 performs the game’s processing, so the PC is acting as a remote screen and control endpoint.

- Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
- Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
You need a PS5 console, a PlayStation account, broadband connectivity, and the PS Remote Play application for PC. Because the console is doing the work, a modest computer that meets Sony’s client requirements can be sufficient even though the PS5 game itself may be demanding.
Emulation is local execution
An emulator tries to reproduce enough of the PS5’s hardware and software environment for console code to run on a different architecture. The PC, rather than a PS5, must perform the emulation and game processing. That makes results highly dependent on the emulator build, the exact game, the operating system, and the computer’s hardware.
KytyPS5 describes itself as an open-source project for Windows and Linux with experimental macOS support. Its project information says it can boot 2D games and a selection of 3D games, but also warns that development is at an early stage and compatibility is limited. A title reaching a menu or displaying a scene is not evidence that it can be completed reliably.

What you need for PS Remote Play on a Windows PC
Console, account, and connection
- A PS5 console is required; Remote Play streams from that console rather than supplying games independently.
- A PlayStation account is required, and the PC application must be signed in with the same account associated with the console.
- The PS5 must be connected to broadband and available to the application. Sony documents settings that allow Remote Play to wake the console from rest mode when the relevant options are enabled.
- The game must be compatible with Remote Play. Sony excludes games that require PlayStation VR or other additional peripherals that Remote Play cannot provide.
Sony’s listed Windows client requirements
| Component | Sony’s stated requirement |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 |
| Processor | Seventh-generation Intel Core processor or later |
| Memory | At least 2 GB RAM |
| Storage | At least 100 MB available space |
| Display | At least 1,024 × 768 resolution |
| Other hardware | A sound card and a USB port |
| Controllers listed by Sony | DualSense, DualSense Edge, or DUALSHOCK 4 |
These are requirements for the Remote Play client, not a guarantee of a particular image quality or latency. A PC that meets the minimum specification can run the application, while the experience still depends on the network path and the console’s availability.
Controller connection
Sony’s Windows instructions say to connect the controller to the PC with a USB cable. The documented controller list includes DualSense, DualSense Edge, and DUALSHOCK 4. If you do not already have one, a compatible controller is an additional purchase; the Remote Play workflow itself does not replace the need for game controls.
How fast does your internet need to be?
Sony lists 5 Mbps upload and download as the baseline recommendation for Remote Play. For best performance, Sony recommends at least 15 Mbps upload and download. These are recommendations, not guarantees: congestion, instability, and the quality of the connection between the PS5 and PC can still affect picture quality, responsiveness, or the ability to connect.
Rank #3
- Ultra Customizable Controls
- Mappable Back Buttons
- DualSense Wireless Controller Features Built In
- Replaceable Stick Modules and Caps
The upload figure matters because the console has to send the game image to the PC, while the download and return path carry control input and session data. A speed test that briefly reaches the stated number does not prove that the connection will remain stable during a long session. Treat 5 Mbps as the minimum starting point and 15 Mbps as Sony’s target for a better margin, not as a promise of console-like latency.
Set up PS Remote Play step by step
- Prepare the PS5. Connect the console to broadband and enable Remote Play in the PS5’s system settings.
- Configure rest-mode access if you want wake-up. Enable the console options Sony identifies for allowing Remote Play to wake the PS5 from rest mode. Without those settings, the console may need to be turned on manually.
- Install the official PC application. Use Sony’s PS Remote Play application on a supported Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 computer.
- Sign in. Open the application and sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the PS5.
- Connect a controller. Attach a listed DualSense, DualSense Edge, or DUALSHOCK 4 controller to Windows with a USB cable.
- Start the console connection. Choose the PS5 in the application and let it establish the session. The game remains installed and running on the console; the PC displays the streamed output.
- Check the session before troubleshooting the game. If the picture is unstable or input feels delayed, verify the broadband connection and console availability before assuming the game itself is incompatible.
What PS5 emulation can and cannot do today
Current project status
KytyPS5 is the clearest example in the supplied evidence of a publicly available PS5 emulator project. It supports Windows and Linux, with macOS support described as experimental. Its own status description reports successful booting for 2D titles and a selection of 3D titles, while warning that compatibility is limited and the software is early in development.
That wording is important. Emulator compatibility is not a single yes-or-no property for the whole PS5 library. One game may boot while another fails during startup; a game may render its menus but break when a later scene, shader, save operation, or online service is used. The project’s warnings about crashes, graphical glitches, and poor performance should be treated as normal possibilities rather than unusual edge cases.

Game files and software legality
The cited project says it does not distribute games or copyrighted system software. You therefore need legally obtained game files and any required system software yourself. The project description does not establish PS5 ownership as a formal emulator requirement, but that does not make downloading copyrighted games or firmware from unofficial sources lawful. Follow the laws that apply where you live and use only files you are entitled to use.
Why a boot report is not a playability guarantee
A compatibility list or screenshot can show that a title launched under one build and configuration. It does not provide an independently audited completion rate, frame-rate result, latency measurement, or guarantee that your hardware will behave the same way. No independent compatibility percentages or controlled emulator benchmarks are established here, so claims that PS5 emulation is broadly playable would go beyond the available evidence.
Remote Play versus emulation: the practical trade-offs
| Question | Remote Play | Emulation |
|---|---|---|
| Do you need to own a PS5? | Yes. Sony’s service streams from your console. | The project description does not list ownership as a requirement, but legal game and system files are necessary. |
| What determines game support? | Whether the title is compatible with Sony’s Remote Play service and does not require excluded VR or peripheral hardware. | The exact game, emulator build, operating system, drivers, and PC hardware. |
| What can go wrong? | Connection failures, variable image quality, input delay, or an unsupported peripheral-dependent game. | Failure to boot, crashes, visual corruption, missing features, and poor performance. |
| Where does the workload happen? | On the PS5; the PC receives the stream. | On the PC through an experimental compatibility layer. |
| How predictable is setup? | Sony publishes a client, requirements, account instructions, and controller guidance. | Builds and compatibility change as development continues. |
| Who should choose it? | Anyone who owns a PS5 and wants to play from a PC display. | Users willing to test a specific title and troubleshoot unstable software. |
Which option fits your situation?
You own a PS5 and simply want to play on a PC monitor
Use Remote Play first. It matches Sony’s documented workflow, avoids the need to make a PC reproduce PS5 hardware, and gives you a clear support path when the application or connection has a problem. Confirm that the game does not depend on VR or another excluded peripheral.
Best Value
- Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions through haptic feedback
- Experience varying levels of force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
- Chat online through the built-in microphone and connect a headset directly through the 3.5mm jack
- Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button
- Play on more devices using the USB Type-C cable or Bluetooth to connect easily to Windows PC and Mac computers, Android and iOS mobile phones as well as your PlayStation 5
You own a PS5 but want the PC to run the game independently
Remote Play does not meet that specific goal because the console still performs the game’s processing. Emulation is the only option among these two that attempts local execution, but KytyPS5’s limited compatibility and instability mean you should treat it as an experiment rather than a dependable replacement.
You do not own a PS5
Remote Play cannot satisfy this use case because Sony requires a PS5 console for streaming. Experimental emulation may appear to offer another path, but the cited project does not provide a reliable general solution for a broad PS5 library. Check the project’s current status for the exact title and build, and expect that the result may not be playable.
You are interested in emulator development
Emulation may be worthwhile as a technical project. Testing a known title, recording reproducible failures, and comparing behavior across builds can help you understand the state of the software. Set expectations around experimentation, not a finished console replacement.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTroubleshooting the common failure points
Remote Play will not connect
- Confirm that the PS5 is powered on or configured for the rest-mode wake features Sony documents.
- Check that the PC application is signed in with the same PlayStation account as the console.
- Verify that the PS5 and PC have broadband access and that the connection meets Sony’s stated baseline recommendation.
- Try another compatible title if one game fails; a requirement for VR or an additional peripheral can make a game incompatible with Remote Play.
The picture is poor or controls feel delayed
- Check sustained upload and download performance rather than relying on a single momentary speed reading.
- Compare your connection with Sony’s 15 Mbps recommendation for best performance.
- Separate network symptoms from game compatibility symptoms: a poor stream across several titles points to the connection, while one excluded title points to the game’s requirements.
The controller is not responding on Windows
- Use one of the controller models Sony lists for Remote Play.
- Connect it to the PC with USB as Sony’s Windows instructions specify.
- Reconnect the cable and confirm that Windows recognizes the controller before starting the Remote Play session.
An emulated game crashes or displays broken graphics
- Check the KytyPS5 project’s current compatibility information for the exact game and emulator build.
- Do not treat a boot report as proof of stable play; crashes and graphical glitches are known limitations described by the project.
- Record the game version, operating system, emulator build, and failure point so you can determine whether a later build changes the result.
Can PS5 emulation replace Remote Play?
Not for the typical PS5 owner today. Remote Play has a defined purpose, published client requirements, account and controller instructions, and a console doing the heavy processing. Its weaknesses are mainly network dependence and the limits of compatible games.
Emulation removes the need to stream from a console, but it replaces that network dependency with unresolved compatibility and performance problems. Until an emulator can run the specific games you care about reliably, from launch through extended play, it is better understood as experimental software than as a general way to play PS5 games on PC.
Verdict
For a PS5 owner, install and use Remote Play. Meet Sony’s Windows and bandwidth recommendations, connect a supported controller by USB, and enable the console settings needed for rest-mode wake-up if you want that convenience. Follow emulation only for a particular technical reason or title, and verify current project compatibility before investing time in it. The evidence supports Remote Play as the practical choice and PS5 emulation as an evolving experiment.
