For reliable access to supported PS5 games, play them on a PS5. As of October 13, 2026, PC-based PS5 emulation remains experimental, and compatibility and performance vary by game. Some project reports describe gameplay or completion; others report only startup, menus, or rendered scenes, sometimes with serious defects. There is no universal PC specification or controlled PS5-versus-emulator benchmark in the available evidence. A PC makes more sense if the game has an official PC release or if you want to experiment with evolving emulation software and can accept incomplete results.
What is the practical difference?
Playing a PS5 game on a PS5 means running the console release on its intended platform. Trying to play that game through PC emulation means relying on experimental software that attempts to reproduce the console’s behavior on different hardware. Those are not equivalent paths today: the console is the dependable choice for supported PS5 games, while an emulator’s status is specific to the title and may change as its development continues.
The distinction matters because “runs on PC” can describe very different outcomes. A game may start but stop at a menu, render a scene without usable gameplay, or allow some play while suffering from graphical, audio, performance, or stability problems. A project report that reaches one of those stages does not establish that the game can be played from beginning to end on a typical PC.

PC emulation and a PS5 compared
| Decision factor | PC-based PS5 emulation | Playing on a PS5 |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility | Experimental and title-specific. Reports can range from startup or menus to gameplay or completion; check the current status for the exact game. | Runs supported PS5 games on the console. Sony separately documents broad PS4 backward compatibility, with qualifications and exceptions. |
| Performance | Depends on the emulator build, game, host hardware, settings, scene, and whether graphics render correctly. Available observations do not establish a universal minimum PC specification or a fair cross-platform performance comparison. | Runs the console release in its intended platform environment. That is a practical reliability advantage, not proof that a PS5 beats every PC in every performance measure. |
| Setup and stability | Requires willingness to use experimental software and tolerate defects, incomplete support, or changes between builds. | Generally the simpler route for playing supported console games. |
| Controls | Input options depend on the emulator and game. Sony’s PC controller guidance is for supported official PlayStation PC games, and support varies by title. | DualSense is the PS5 controller. Sony says PS5 games on the console can only be played with DualSense wireless controllers. |
| Best fit | Technical experimentation, development interest, or an official PC version of the game. | Reliable play of supported PS5 games. |
The comparison is about the paths available to a player, not a benchmark ranking. The project reports are not controlled tests matching the same game, scene, settings, and measurement method on a PS5 and a PC. Do not compare an emulator’s isolated FPS figure with a console experience as though the two figures were measured under equivalent conditions.
Can a PC play all PS5 games?
No. The accurate answer is game by game, and even a positive report needs context. The project status page records a mixture of reported milestones: some entries describe games as playable or completable, while other entries remain at startup, menu, or scene-rendering stages. Some notes also identify graphical defects, weak performance, gameplay that has not been verified, or long-session stability that has not been tested.
Look for what the report actually establishes rather than relying on a single broad label. These stages are useful distinctions:

- Menus: The game reaches its menu. It may still fail when starting a level or loading a scene.
- Scene rendering: A scene appears, but rendering a scene does not prove that the player can control the game or progress.
- Gameplay: The report says that play was observed. Check whether it identifies what was actually verified and what remains defective or untested.
- Completion: A report says a playthrough was completed under its stated conditions. That is stronger evidence for that title and test setup, but it is not a guarantee for another PC, emulator build, game version, or future update.
These descriptions should not be collapsed into a binary “works/doesn’t work” verdict. A title might reach gameplay but still have errors that make it unsuitable for a reliable playthrough. Conversely, a particular successful report does not establish broad compatibility across the game catalog.

How to check a specific game
- Open the PS5PCEM project status page and search for the exact game title. Confirm that the entry is for that game rather than a different release or similarly named title.
- Read the reported stage carefully: startup, menu, scene rendering, gameplay, or completion. Treat the author’s wording and any qualification as more informative than a short status label.
- Check the notes for the emulator build, game version, host hardware, settings, output resolution, and test conditions. A result from a different configuration may not predict yours.
- Read the defect and testing notes. Look for rendering problems, low observed performance, audio issues, movement or control verification, and any explicit statement that a feature or long session was not tested.
- Recheck the entry before relying on it. The project is under active development, so a status can change; an older report should not be treated as a current guarantee.
This is a way to judge the available evidence, not a promise that every entry contains all those details or that the project provides a complete compatibility catalog. If the game you want is absent, or its report stops at an early stage, the evidence does not establish that it is playable on your PC.
What do the reported performance figures mean?
Emulator performance observations are tied to a particular game, scene, build, host PC, settings, and measurement method. An FPS figure without those details can be misleading; even with details, it is not automatically comparable to a PS5 result. Poor or incorrect rendering can also make a simple FPS number a weak description of the actual experience.
One example illustrates why the qualifications matter: the PS5PCEM project’s October 13, 2026 report for Goat Simulator 3 records a median of 1.8 FPS on an RTX 3070 Ti at 1080p output. The same entry notes inverted presentation and unresolved rendering defects. It says movement was verified, but reload, audio quality, multiplayer, and completion were not. This is a specific report for one host and test, not a representative PC benchmark, not a statement about all emulator titles, and not a matched comparison with the game on PS5. See the project status entry for the qualifications.

Other entries on the project page report gameplay or completion for different titles, underscoring that results vary rather than establishing a typical level of performance. The available material does not provide a population study, an average FPS advantage, a reliable hardware multiplier, or a controlled console-versus-PC test. It therefore cannot answer “How much faster is a PC?” with a general number.

Does a GPU milestone mean games are ready?
No. A graphics-related implementation milestone can be technically meaningful without demonstrating consumer-ready compatibility. Tom’s Hardware reported on October 10, 2026 that AnyPS5 had achieved decoder recognition for 1,166 instructions in the AMD RDNA 1 and RDNA 2 tracked instruction set. In this context, “recognition” means the decoder identifies an instruction; it does not show that every instruction translates correctly, that every GPU feature works, or that games render properly. It is not a compatibility percentage or a count of games ready to play.
The milestone should be read at its stated scope: progress in one part of an emulator project, not evidence that all PS5 games run on PC. The October 10, 2026 Tom’s Hardware report itself cautions that native PC play for PS5 games remains far off. For a player deciding what to use, a game-specific status report is more relevant than an instruction-decoder count.
Playing PS4 games on a PS5 is a separate question
Sony says the PS5 is backward compatible with the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games. Select PS4 games may receive Game Boost, but Sony also notes that some PS4 functions may be unavailable and some titles may show errors or unexpected behavior. Its support page lists PS4-only exceptions and says that list can change. The statement concerns PS4 games on PS5; it does not demonstrate that PS5 games can be emulated on a PC.

Also distinguish PS4 emulation from PS5 emulation. shadPS4 is a PlayStation 4 emulator, not a PS5 emulator; its project repository directs users to a PS4 compatibility list and discusses firmware modules. Its progress cannot be used as evidence that PS5 games work on a PC. See the shadPS4 repository for its stated scope.
Official PC releases are not emulation
If the game you want has an official PC release, that is a different option from trying to emulate the PS5 version. An official PC edition is made available for PC through the relevant release channels; its own system requirements and support information are what matter. The Sony PC support page discusses official PlayStation games on PC and identifies retailers such as Steam and Epic Games. Availability depends on the specific title, so verify that the game you want has a PC release rather than assuming the console version can be transferred to a PC.
Sony lists DualSense, DualSense Edge, and DUALSHOCK 4 among controller options for supported PlayStation games on PC, while warning that controller support varies by game. That guidance is not a compatibility promise for every PC game or emulator, and it does not mean a controller resolves an emulation problem. On a PS5, Sony says PS5 games can only be played using DualSense wireless controllers. See Sony’s PlayStation gaming on PC support page for its PC-specific details.

Which option should you choose?
Choose a PS5 if you want dependable PS5 gameplay
If your priority is to play a supported PS5 game without investigating emulator builds, compatibility reports, and configuration-specific problems, the console is the straightforward choice. It is the intended platform for the console release, and the project evidence does not show that PC emulation is a reliable substitute across games.

Choose an official PC release if one exists and fits your needs
A PC release can be a practical PC route, but it is not the same as emulating the console version. Check the PC edition’s current availability, system requirements, and controller support for that particular title. Neither its performance nor its feature set should be inferred from emulator reports.
Try emulation if experimentation is the point
Emulation may interest technically curious users who want to follow an experimental project and accept that a specific title may not progress beyond an early stage. Before investing time, check that game’s current report and decide whether its documented limitations are acceptable. A report about another title—or a milestone in a graphics decoder—cannot substitute for that check.
What the evidence does not establish
There is no supported basis here for a “best PC for PS5 emulation” parts list, a minimum GPU or CPU that guarantees good results, a percentage of the PS5 library that works, or a universal frame-rate comparison against the console. Individual test-host reports can be useful clues, but they are not a hardware recommendation. Host hardware, software build, title, scene, settings, and correctness of rendering all matter, and the available examples are not matched measurements.
Compatibility also should not be inferred from a project’s overall progress. One game reaching gameplay does not establish that another will start; one title being completed does not make the emulator stable for all long sessions; and a technically specific milestone does not translate into a player-facing catalog percentage. Keep conclusions at the same scope as the report that supports them.
Legal and file-use considerations
PS5PCEM says it does not ship games, firmware, libraries, or keys and asks users to use content and system files they are legally entitled to use. That project statement is not a legal ruling for every person or jurisdiction. Rules can depend on where you live and the circumstances of how game copies and system files are obtained and used. Check applicable local law and the project’s current guidance rather than assuming that emulator availability settles the legal question.
Bottom line
As of October 13, 2026, PC PS5 emulation is an experimental, game-by-game undertaking, not a dependable way to play the whole PS5 library. Use a PS5 for supported PS5 games, an official PC edition when the specific game has one and that version suits you, and emulation only if you are comfortable checking title-specific evidence and accepting incomplete or defective results.
